1 ISSUE 125 March 2013 NEWSLETTER IS A NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION GREETINGS DON DIEGO MEMBER Mammoth #2 is over and done. I commented last month in the SKI CHAT- TER that trip # 1 was one of the best; however, I might have to back off and state the #2 was its equal. We had spring temps and winter snow. In fact we had new snow (~2 in) Sunday night, which made Monday sweet. The hill was groomed to a tee making the runs great from top to bottom. We again had great parties with more food than you could eat. Thanks to Noni, with help of Chris and others. The retrofit at the Sierra Nevada Lodge is just about finished and we are back in the Mountain room for our parties. We've been able to fill the buses this year, which is the criteria for having three trips. We've also have had great trip leaders able to pull together the lodging, bus, and food. The problem is that we are loosing the present trip leaders-- they need a break. There is no way to thank them for all their effort in making the trips great. We have a few names that showed interest in becoming next year trip leaders but we could use a few more, just for back up. If you are interested in becoming a trip leader, or an assistant trip leader (to support the trip leader) please let us know. We also need a trip director to coordinate and assist in the overall planning and trip organization. The trips for the next season will be on the basic side, providing lodging, transportation, and perhaps a meal (pizza night), and/or a pre-dinner get together. Of course the trip details will depend on the trip leader. It's time to volunteer, you will get all the support you need. I hate to bring up the old story, but the club is changing. The leadership has been in office for more than the standard time. We need new officers in order to perhaps invigorate the masses and bring in new ideas. Election time is approaching fast and we need names for all the positions. You will be asked at the meeting if you would be interested in filling one of the positions. Larry Pickering - DDSC President Upcoming Activities The next Don Diego Ski Club meeting, Thursday, March 7 at Casa Machado in Kearny Mesa, 3750 John J Montgomery Drive, starting at 5:30 PM. Sunday - Friday, Mar , Mammoth Midweek #3: 3rd DDSC ski trip for this season. See flier on page 6. Saturday, Sunday, Mar. 23, 24, SoCalcs races: SoCalcs Championship races (GS and slalom) at Mammoth. Saturday, Sunday, April 6, 7, FWSA Championships: FWSA Championship races (GS and slalom) at Alpine Meadows. Mammoth Midweek #2 - A Success!! Great snow conditions, great weather, and great people made for a wonderful midweek skiing experience. Thanks and congratulations to trip leader Noni Henning for making this possible. Below is a early morning shot of Mammoth Mountain as seen from our lodgings at the Sierra Nevada Lodge. Nonmembers are always welcome at club meetings. 2 Mammoth Midweek #2 testimonials from 2 new members : Hello Fellow Don Diego Ski Club February Trip participants, Just wanted to say thank you for the warm welcome you gave this new member. I can t remember when I ve met a more friendly and considerate group. In addition to finding me a ride with Chris to your pick- up spot, marvelous trip leader Noni kept me wellinformed on trip protocol. I really appreciated the many opportunities to meet you at cocktail parties and after dinner get-togethers. You all have mastered the art of making the newbie feel right at home both on the slopes and après ski. There was always someone to ski with at my level and good company for dinners out. Ski lessons provided by the delightful Bea were an unexpected bonus. I very much look forward to skiing with you next year. With warm regards and many thanks to you all, Jeannette Pease Page 2 TRIP NEWS The February Mammoth ski trip was excellent. It started with a comfortable bus ride to the Sierra Nevada Lodge where the trip leaders, Noni and Chris, provided abundant food and beverages for fun gatherings throughout the week. It was the easiest ski vacation I ve ever had because after the provided breakfasts we had Eddy driving the bus to and from the mountain every day for a week of great skiing conditions, no lines and lockers so you don t have to lug your gear around all week. I m new to the club and everyone was so friendly on and off the slopes. The members are easy going and enjoy skiing my kind of ski club! Thanks everyone! In addition to the Free Ski Shuttle, a number of ski resorts offer their own free ski shuttles, such as Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley, Homewood Mountain Resort, Northstar California and Diamond Peak. ZORB RIDE GOES VERY WRONG IN RUSSIA A Russian man died and another was injured on January 3, when an extreme attraction went wrong in the republic of Karachayevo- Cherkessiya. Denis Burakov, 27, and his friend Vladimir Shcherbov, 33, were set to roll from the top of Mussa-Achitaro Mountain in a zorb* made of transparent plastic. A zorb is a huge clear plastic ball that you enter and ride inside. For reasons unknown the zorb went off the trail and fell into a huge gorge with a degree slope. The ball flew for about a kilometer and stopped on the ice-covered Peacock's Eye Lake in the gorge. Rescuers had to use skis to get to the lake. Burakov was still alive, but died in an ambulance after being carried out of the gorge -- which took six hours. Shcherbov has been taken to a hospital with concussion and multiple minor injuries. One the guy s friends filmed the ride and uploaded it onto YouTube. See it at SEWAGE YELLOW SNOW CAUSED BY RUST? After a decade of legal battles, a ski resort in Northern Arizona recently became the first in the world to make artificial snow totally out of sewage effluent. On Dec. 24, Arizona Snowbowl fired up its snow guns for the first time, and to everyone s surprise, the snow that blasted onto the mountain was yellow According to Snowbowl s manager, the problem was caused by rusty residue in the new snow-making equipment that carries the wastewater directly from Flagstaff, sewage treatment plant. Environmentalists and Native American groups have long opposed the ski area s snow-making plan, arguing that the wastewater snow poses risks to public health and the ecology of a mountain considered sacred by 13 American Indian tribes and the state Department of Environmental Quality, said the agency was looking hard into complaints it had received claiming that the presence of the manufactured snow on the slopes violated state laws on the use of reclaimed water, which prohibit ingesting it. Sick, said Kaelan, who describes himself as a proficient skier.

C. Eastman (858) , m.c.eastman@att.net The Shrines I had the opportunity to ski Aspen in February with the Far West Ski Association. Many of you have been on Ski Trips to Aspen and many of you have skied with Far West. For me this February 2013 Trip added something new. Most of us know about the great skiing in Aspen and Snowmass. Not everyone knows about the mystical shrines hidden in the trees on all four of the Ski Mountains in Aspen. For about two decades, locals have been ducking into their favorite hiding spots on the mountain and nailing pictures, license plates, wind chimes and other paraphernalia to tree trunks in honor of their heroes. The trees and lodge pole pines hide sanctuaries dedicated to many. The shrines are to locals or persons with a local connection. The Golf Shrine on Snowmass is dedicated to deceased greats of the game of Golf. It was installed on February 5, 2007 and dedicates 17 decreased great golfers. The Golf Shrine includes photos of players, golf signs, a bucket of range balls, head covers, a pair of golf shoes, a golf bag, a few clubs and an empty bottle of Schnapps signed by PGA Tour pro Chris DiMarco. There are no maps showing shrine locations. The local custom and protocol is only to give general hints. The Golf Shrine contains a solar powered security camera as well. The next time you are in Aspen ya gotta go! And, smile for the security camera.

5 Page 5 (Trip News, Mammoth Midweek #3, continued from page 2) Please read the CST information below: Mammoth Midweek #3: Hi Everyone, We ve just returned from the February Mammoth trip, and this may have been one of our "top 10" ski trips. Blue sky every day, not enough wind to even mention, cool snow saving but not uncomfortable temperatures, great grooming, and great social activities. It was fabulous! And, mountain customer service has been improved by letting busses unload and load passengers right in front of the door to our lockers! No more lugging your stuff way across the parking lot, coming or going. And, the driver picks us up right there every afternoon! There is no reason to think the March trip won't be just as awesome as the just completed trip. Possibly better. So, re-think your schedule and plans, and get busy and sign up for the March trip. Carolyn has contracted for the rooms at the newly remodeled (and very nicely) Sierra Nevada Lodge based on current sign ups, so we will need to think in terms of room sharing as we consider additional rooms for any additional sign ups. But Carolyn can work something out if you want to join us. So, give it some thought. You don't want to miss out on our last ski trip of the season. Give Carolyn a call, or her today: or csblumenthal@san.rr.com CST REFERENCE NUMBER The paragraph below explains what CST (California Seller of Travel) means. You will see the number referenced on every flyer. Please read this paragraph thoroughly. It is a required for all club trips to make this statement available to you. CST California law requires certain sellers of travel to have a trust account or bond. This business has a trust account. All payments for transportation or travel service not provided to the passenger shall be promptly refunded, in accordance with the agreed-to-terms and conditions, unless the passenger otherwise instructs the seller of travel in writing. This business is a participant in the Travel Consumer Restitution Corporations (TCRC). You, the passenger, may request reimbursement from TCRC if you are owed a refund of more than $50 for transportation or travel services which was not refunded in a timely manner by a seller of travel who was registered and participating in the TCRC at the time of sale. The maximum amount which may be paid by the TCRC to any one passenger is the total amount paid on behalf of the passenger to the seller of travel, not to exceed $15,000. A claim must be submitted to the TCRC within six months after the scheduled completion date of the travel. A claim must include sufficient information and documentation to prove your claim and $35 processing fee. You must agree to waive your right to other civil remedies against a registered participating seller of travel for matters arising out of a sale for which you file a claim with the TCRC, if your were located in California at the time of the sale. You may request a claim form by writing to: Travel Consumer Restitution Corporation, P.O.
