1 ISSUE 146 September 2015 GREETINGS DON DIEGO MEMBERS Skiers, get ready for deeper snow in Scripps and the weather bureau say we are in for a significant El Nino winter which traditionally means heavier than normal precipitation for California. The Torrey Pines Ski Club is coming with us in January and March, so sign up now to reserve your seat. Our 2016 Don Diego trip leaders remain the same with Carolyn leading the January trip to Mammoth Mountain, California. Gunter and Christa are leading the 7-12 February trip and Ed and Ellen are leading the March trip. We had a great time last season with these folks. Beginner skiers and former skiers who may have given up the sport, come ski with us. Mammoth has the best ski school, and it s easy to rent equipment on the mountain. After your lesson you can practice with us during the afternoon on the easy slope at the main lodge. When you get your confidence back you can move up to longer runs, on your own schedule, of course. After skiing the club often adjourns to Tusks at the main lodge to discuss events of the day. We then take our coach for a ten minute ride down the mountain to clean up at our hotel and rest before dinner. During the week we usually have a pizza party and the hotel provides a wine and cheese party. Various groups form up to go to a movie or eat out such as at the Chart House for early dinner. Then after five days of skiing, on Friday all of us knock off early in the afternoon, assemble at the Yodler restaurant, and ride our comfortable big bus back to San Diego. It sure beats driving. I hope this winter you will come with the Don Diego Ski Club. Each of our trips provides an economical week on the slopes of one of the best ski mountains anywhere. And Don Diego has nice members who want you to succeed. Sign up now to assure your place on at least one trip. As we have all heard there should be record snow this coming year quite a change (hopefully) from the previous year. I would like to get an estimate of how many of you, and maybe some new friends of yours, are planning to ski in January and ride the Don Diego Ski Bus. Also please let me know if you have any suggestions of how the trip could be improved. All suggestions are welcome and will be considered. :-) Also I know that there was some problem with the pizza on the March trip as the owners of Nik N Willies changed. 3 Page 3 THE DON DIEGO SKI CLUB SAN DIEGO COUNCIL of SKI CLUBS REPORT by Eileen Weiner Our last meeting was July 1 where there was much discussion regarding our hosting the FWSA convention this year. Far West made about $30,000 from the silent auction. We had over 180 walk-ins for the event and everyone considered the convention a great success. I want to thank all of our volunteers who helped make our convention as successful as it was. Thanks to: Judy Porter, Pete Michael, Carl Cobb, Bonnie Fritts, Sara Lewis, Helen Harris, Ann Heye, Ed Offstein, Ellen Locke. If I have forgotten anyone, my apologies. Next June, the convention will be in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Viking Rhine Boat Trip is full and leaving August 21-29, 2015 The Aspen Trip is full, with a wait list, leaving December 10-16, 2015 SQUAW VALLEY AND ALPINE MEADOWS TO CON- NECT VIA GONDOLA Squaw Valley USA has reached an agreement with the owner of the land between Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows to create a base-to-base gondola between the two mountains to form a liftconnected area of 6,000 acres! For decades, skiers and riders have talked about connecting these two world-class resorts, said Andy Wirth, president and CEO of Squaw Valley Ski Holdings, LLC. Over the last four years, we ve made significant improvements to enhance the skier experience at both Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. The base-to-base gondola will offer our guests the ability to easily explore and experience the unique attributes of these two mountains via a brand new aerial connection, while simultaneously reducing vehicle traffic between them. Plans to connect the two mountains have commenced, and include the possibility of ta high-speed, detachable gondola that would operate between the base of Squaw Valley and the base of Alpine Meadows, traveling over the KT-22 Peak. There are no plans currently being contemplated to allow skiing or other non-skiing activities along the lift route or on the terrain located between the two resorts. The estimated completion date of the project will be subject to Placer County and U.S. Forest Service approvals once applications are submitted. The planned base-to-base gondola will be designed to minimize the overall footprint and potential visual impacts to the adjacent Granite Chief Wilderness, as well as maintain the scenic beauty of the area. NEW LIFTS IN NORTH AMERICA Jackson Hole plans to complete three years of expansion and construction in time for the start of its 50th season next winter. The Teton Lift is a new high-speed quad lift that will carry The Wonders of Ireland, Scotland & Octoberfest leaving for Ireland September 1-9 and the after trip to Scotland leaving September 9-15, and Octoberfest September 16-18, 2016 is taking reservations- see Eileen Sanford. Far West Ski Week is going to Telluride, Colorado leaving January 30 to February 6, 2016 contact Alan Godwin at alan@skiclubs.us if you are interested. There will not be a Council meeting in August as we are having our summer happy hour on August 5 at 57 Degrees from 5-7 PM. The bar is located at 1735 Hancock Street. Mark your calendars for the Council s Gala on November 7, 2015 location TBD I will be looking for volunteers for Snow Jam November 13-15, 2015 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Some Ski Industry News (reprinted from the NATIONAL SKI CLUB NEWSFLASH) skiers and riders 1,650 vertical feet (495m) to an area of around 200 acres, The Crags, half of which has previously only been accessible via hiking. The area will include three new runs along with gladed terrain. Squaw Valley to upgrade the Siberia Express chairlift from a high -speed quad to a six pak this summer. in addition, the lift has been designed in a way that will improve its ability to operate during inclement weather. The Siberia Express chairlift is one of the most popular lifts at Squaw Valley, and is used primarily by intermediate and advanced level skiers and riders to access terrain including Siberia Bowl, Mainline and the Mainline Terrain Park. Aspen Skiing Company will replace and realign the High Alpine lift on Snowmass, install snowmaking equipment on two existing trails, and implement additional trail and glade construction projects this summer after receiving approvals from the United States Forest Service today. The upgraded lift will be realigned, allowing the area, already one of America s largest, to add 63 acres more gladed terrain over the next five years. PURGATORY IS PURGATORY AGAIN The southern Colorado ski area of Purgatory which has spent the past decade or so named Durango Mountain Resort has a new owner who has decided to change the ski area s title back to its original name Purgatory. Local businessman James Coleman is the resort s new owner and he is investing in a new high speed quad chairlift to replace chair #8 for the coming ski season the resort s 50th season.

4 Page 4 THE DON DIEGO SKI CLUB Meet Our Members: Ellouise Morse A new resident to California, Ellouise moved here about three years ago and currently lives in Vista. In past years she has lived in Colorado, Texas, Iowa, and Washington State. Ellouise has skied for many years starting in Washington as a teen, however, living in Colorado for nearly ten years helped her to really hone her skills. Downhill skiing is just one of the athletic activities that Ellouise enjoys. A former Ironman Triathlete, running, cycling, and swimming are still a part of her daily activities. Since retirement from her nursing career, travel and spending time with family also occupy her time. Ellouise is looking forward to participating in the ski club activities and doing some skiing in the California powder. NEW MEMBERS Ellouise Morse Chris Wolfe Lorraine Camenzuli Wolfe WELCOME! Just a short note to let you know that the officers and members of the DON DIEGO SKI CLUB are delighted to see you as new members. We look forward to meeting you at the club meetings or one of the many other club activities. September Birthdays Fitness and Hiking It's time again to get fit for the upcoming ski season. An easy and fun way to get fit are our weekly Thursday morning hikes. September can still be on the hot side, so we will still be hiking on the beach or close to the beach. Later in the fall our hikes will be more inland and a bit more challenging. Remember that a walk in nature not only improves your fitness, it also soothes the mind, lowers your stress levels, and restores your happiness! In September we plan the following hikes: 9/3 Torrey pines Extension, from Del Mar 9/10 Beach hike, from Solana beach to Encinitas 9/17 San Elijo Lagoon 9/24 Lake Hodges, from the fruit stand on Del Dios, Santa Fe and Gorge trails Sabine, Your Hiking leader San Clemente Canyon hikers Ed Offstein 09/02 Bill Gallaher 09/03 Chris Houkom 09/05 Carol Hamm 09/07 Andre Chappaz 09/14 Millie Gallaher 09/20 Jacquelyn Burns 09/21 Ardith Fishel 09/22 Shannon Miller 09/25 Jim Roberts 09/25

5 Page 5 THE DON DIEGO SKI CLUB Some DDSC member events from this past summer Don Diego Day at the Del Mar Fair By Eileen Weiner On June 24, eight of us went to the fair and had a blast. We ate BBQ and fish tacos, ice cream and saw Carl Cobb s fossil exhibit, some farm animals and every gadget and gizmo known to man. I want to thank Pete, Judy, Carolyn, Verena, Russ, Hans and Marilea for joining me. Afterwards, some of us went for Thai food and celebrated Judy s birthday. It was a very relaxing day and evening. For those of you who missed the event, think next year. Russ providing Pete some rain protection Christine s Barbecue By Don Diego Miramar Flying Leathernecks Aviation Museum By Don Diego (aka Pete Michael) About 20 of us honored our Marines on July 18, the day of the big rain. We only experienced minor misty conditions as Pete Grumman Avenger and Jim Roberts described the planes beginning with a World War II torpedo plane which entered combat at the battle of Midway. We saw the Corsair and the Crusader, planes our own Helen Harris worked on as an aeronautical engineer at Vought before transferring to Convair. Pete concluded with the present-day Hornet and Harrier. Then Jim Hoffman described future planes, including drones pilotless planes. On July 23, twenty-two Don Diego members and guests came to Christine Kiffmann s in Encinitas for a pleasant backyard weenie roast. Christine provided fresh fruit and Win roasted the hot dogs. Yum. We laughed at Dan Henry s swimming-with-thesharks stories and Verena s bike crash story. Christine s home overlooks a nice canyon and some may have been making plans to hike it. We missed you, so come next time. Don Diego Had a Busy Spring and Summer By Don Diego Well folks, we had lots of parties after the ski season. Chris Houcomb and Win and Ann held backyard barbecues, Dan invited us to a Kiwanis presentation about disabled winter sports, Pete showed us airplanes at Miramar and how to duck out of the rain at the brewery, Carl Cobb held his tailgate BBQ at the stadium before the ballgame, Christine held a backyard barbecue in Encinitas, and Leslie and Carl roasted burgers and weenies at the club picnic. All of these events had strong turnouts. On Labor Day we will cheer Dan as he swims around Oceanside Pier and Ed and Ellen will hold a celebration barbecue in Oceanside afterward. Nice job, everyone. I look forward to hanging out in your back yard. Invite us and we ll come. We re easy. Don Diego Navy? By Don Diego Lecturer Pete before the rain Then the lightning and thunder began and half the group adjourned to the Ballast Point Miramar Brewery for lunch. With us safely inside, the rain came down in buckets. The restaurant can accommodate many diners inside and outside when the weather is warm and dry. Hans and Merrole sailed to our August picnic in style aboard their Malibu outrigger yacht with a big red sail. Hans beached the boat next to our picnic table, then took the ladies for rides around Mission Bay. Are there other Don Diego members with boats we can ride? We could have our own navy.
