1 ISSUE 133 February 2014 NEWSLETTER IS A NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION GREETINGS DON DIEGO MEMBERS Mammoth Lakes History (from the city concierge): Mining was the key that unlocked the treasure chest of the Eastern Sierra. Vast deserts on three sides and an immense mountain barrier on the other kept white men away from the native Paiute, Shoshone, and Washoe settlements until relatively late in California's History. But the discovery of the Comstock Lode silver ore in 1858, east of Lake Tahoe, changed that overnight. Prospectors from the gold fields on the west side flooded east across the Sierra to the Comstock. Rich gold and silver discoveries at Aurora and Bodie fueled the rumors and dreams of many and kept these prospectors searching for their lucky strike. Four prospectors hunting for the Lost Cement Mine organized the Lakes Mining District on Mineral Hill near Lake Mary in The following year, General George Dodge of Civil War and Union Pacific fame bought the group of claims and organized the Mammoth Mining Co. And here you thought that the name came from the animal. Upcoming Activities The next Don Diego Ski Club meeting, Thursday, February 6 at Boomerangs, 4577 Clairemont Drive, starting at 5:30 PM. Sunday - Friday, Feb Mammoth Midweek #2: 2nd DDSC ski trip for this season. See flier on page 6. Saturday Feb GS race at Mammoth: 3rd race of the season. Sunday - Friday, March 9-14 Mammoth Midweek #3: 3rd DDSC ski trip for this season. See flier on page 6. Membership Goals for 2013/14 Ski Season 95 member sign ups as of January 16, 2014 GOAL: 100 The first club trip this year to Mammoth was a success thanks Carolyn. I think everyone got their legs burnt in, even though they might not have been on their favorite run. The snow condition was marginal at best, but the runs that were open were ski-able. The snow report for the Sierras was reported at 20% at the time of measurement, and it hasn't snowed since. The weather prediction is that the weather pattern will change by the time this Ski Chatter is issued. Lets all get into a Zen mode and make it happen, not only for the snow level but if you want to take a bath. I hope to see you at the club meeting. Larry Pickering - DDSC President 5 memberships to go to reach our goal of 100 for the season. If you haven t yet renewed or joined, just download the membership (renewal) form from our new website at or pick up a form at the next meeting at Boomerangs, 4577 Clairemont Drive on Thursday, February 6th at 5:30 PM. 2 Page 2 TRAVEL NEWS by Noni Henning I wasn t on the January trip, so it s not an easy task to write a travel article this month. From all reports, though, our skiers enjoyed the accommodations at Best Western High Sierra Hotel and the hotel staff had only kind words about Don Diego Ski Club members. Karl, Carolyn and Connie Saindon took a lot of great photos of the trip. It appears that many of you found enough snow to put a smile on your face. If the snow didn t do it, the parties did. There may still be a spot left on the always popular February trip; just check with Heidrun Faulconer at Also, the March trip has plenty of room, so give Connie Saindon a call at to secure your spot on our favorite spring skiing adventure. Let it snow! Please read the CST information in the adjacent column: CST REFERENCE NUMBER The paragraph below explains what CST (California Seller of Travel) means. You will see the number referenced on every flyer. Please read this paragraph thoroughly. It is a required for all club trips to make this statement available to you. CST California law requires certain sellers of travel to have a trust account or bond. This business has a trust account. The maximum amount which may be paid by the TCRC to any one passenger is the total amount paid on behalf of the passenger to the seller of travel, not to exceed $15,000. A claim must be submitted to the TCRC within six months after the scheduled completion date of the travel. A claim must include sufficient information and documentation to prove your claim and $35 processing fee. You must agree to waive your right to other civil remedies against a registered participating seller of travel for matters arising out of a sale for which you file a claim with the TCRC, if your were located in California at the time of the sale. Now you might say, But California is in a drought. That s true, but Mammoth Mountain has magnificent snowmaking capability. Couple that with lack of crowds and nightly grooming, Mammoth s snow conditions were good in the morning and acceptable in the afternoon. Cornice Bowl was open and groomed daily and we had partly cloudy skies all week. After a cool Thursday, a sunny Friday morning seemed to provide the best snow. Mammoth was busy making large amounts of snow for the U.S. Olympic Team snowboard halfpipe and slopestyle tryouts. The U.S. snowboarding team was announced at Mammoth. by Pete Michael Carolyn threw a party on Monday with fresh pizza provided by Nik N Willie s, and on Wednesday we had a nice wine and cheese party sponsored by the hotel. Slocum s restaurant across the street was a popular destination as were the Rafters and Whiskey Creek. Our hotel also has an Indian theme restaurant. Our bus driver, Eddie, took us to the mountain each morning and made trips down the mountain at 2 and 4 PM. This allowed partyers time to meet at the Tusk after skiing. The January trip had guests from other clubs in San Diego and some new folks taking up skiing again. Win, Gail Boyle, Ed Offstein, Sarah, and Roy Michel were welcomed by the club. The pizza party hosted visiabout 31 club members enjoyed staying at the Best Western Plus tors Eileen, Martin and Carl who were up for the ski racing clinic High Sierra Hotel. It is nicely maintained, has a hot breakfast, an of the San Diego Alpine League. One day several members elevator (no dragging our bags up multiple steps), an indoor hot hiked near Lake Mary. tub, gym, indoor pool, and a spacious meeting room. High Sierra Hotel is located on the Red Line bus route across the street from The High Sierra Hotel looks forward to seeing us again on Footloose Sports and Rite Aid with nearby restaurants and shop- February 9th. Be sure to sign up for five days of skiing at Mamping within walking distance. It s next door to Kittredge Sports moth Mountain with Heidrun and Bea. and a convenience store. Our members were impressed with the service the hotel provided, and the hotel looks forward to seeing Our thanks go to Carolyn Blumenthal for leading the January trip us again. and for the club members who assisted.

Pete, Sue, Rose, and Sarah atop Mambo Any questions? Want answers? Want to join the race team? Can you race twice during the season? Need more information? Ask our Race Director, Carl Cobb, at the monthly meeting or call him at Racing/Skiing Report 25 racers from San Diego participated in the 2nd race (slalom on Fascination) of the season at Mammoth on Jan. 11. Don Diego provided 2 racers, Martin Wascher and Carl Cobb, and both had 1st place finishes in their class. The course was hard and icy and it was a challenge just to cross the finish line. A good number of racers fell into the DNF (Did-Not-Finish) category. San Diego generated 129 points and after 2 races is now leading the Rokka league standings by two points. Some Ski Industry News Heidrun, Gail, Bea, and Gordon by the top of chair 8 (reprinted from the NATIONAL SKI CLUB NEWSFLASH) BEAVER CREEK S NEW CHONDOLA Beaver Creek is replacing its primary express quad from the base area with a new chondola, a high-speed combination chairlift and gondola. It s expected to be in place for the ski season. The gondola cabins and chairlift will be served by two separate lines. The resort plans to begin installation in this summer and complete the project by the ski season. SQUAW VALLEY OFFERS FREE CHARGERS FOR ELECTRIC CARS Squaw Valley has installed four new electric car chargers at the resort, making it the first ski resort in California to install charging stations for electric cars. They installed two new CS-40 pedestal chargers from Clipper Creek, offering four 30 amp, 240 volt, J1772 charging stations. J1772 charging stations are a SAE standard for electrical connectors for electric vehicles, meaning the chargers will be compatible with most electric cars on the market today. The new charging stations are located at the western edge of the Far East Building at Squaw Valley, next to the Cornice Cantina. Guests are asked not to leave their cars at the charging stations for more than 10 hours at a time. DOLOMITE SUPERSKI OFFERS WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY ON FOUR GONDOLAS Dolomiti Superski has announced that four of the gondolas in its huge lift network have been retro-fitted with wireless connectivity so that you can whip off your ski mitts and get online as soon as you get in the cabin without needing to worry about roaming charges or slow connection speeds. The Alpen gondola at Kronplatz and the Danterceppies lifts at Val Gardena are among those now offering free wireless connectivity. CBMR SUBMITS NEW MASTER PLAN Crested Butte Mountain Resort has submitted a new Master Development Plan to the U.S. Forest Service, which incorporates previous approvals at the main mountain, as well as adjacent private land development projects, new proposals for terrain outside the resort s existing permit area on Crested Butte, and a reduced proposal for Snodgrass Mountain --the source of controversy in the past. The new plan proposes study for different levels and types of low-impact winter and summer activities on Snodgrass, such as backcountry skiing and riding or snowcat operations, but does not propose plans for lift service on Snodgrass Mountain, proposing instead, on expanding terrain and lift capacity on Crested Butte itself, including expanding the amount of intermediate terrain there. They propose to add 18 new trails on 133 acres of newly developed terrain. When fully implemented, Crested Butte would have 101 trails on 771 acres, for a 21 percent increase. The plan also adds more than 300 acres of undeveloped sidecountry-style intermediate and expert terrain, a 33 percent increase. CBMR is seeking a 440-acre expansion of the current Special Use Permit (SUP) boundary to accomplish this.
