6 1.3. THE HISTORY OF THE SKI SCHOOL ST. MORITZ 1929 Foundation of the Ski School St. Moritz by Giovanni Testa on behalf of the Kur- und Verkehrsverein (tourist board) and of the Skiclub Alpina. The goal of the ski school was the organization of the ski instructor profession Publication of the textbook «Natürliches Skilaufen die Methode der einfachsten Fahrweise» (Natural skiing the method of the easiest way of skiing) by Giovanni Testa. Unfortunately the innovative developments of the St. Moritz skiing technique don t really appeal to the representatives of the powerful «Unified Swiss Technique». In order to be heard, the racing team «Guardia Grischa» is founded for PR reasons. The outstanding success with the St. Moritz technique helped to get glory, honour and coaching jobs all over the world The «Star races» were launched. Depending on the ranking first the ski instructors and later also the guests won badges with one to four stars. A badge with four stars becomes a status symbol. This is why the stars are in our logo! 1939 Despite World War II the ski school continues its daily business. During the time of war the guests are first composed by US soldiers and later also by soldiers from Great Britain. Because many soldiers turned back injured from their St. Moritz stay, the training sessions were changed from the steep slopes at Salastrains to Kulm Park The wealthy guest Mr. Niarchos flies for the first time to Corvatsch by helicopter together with ski instructors of the Swiss Ski School heliskiing was born! 1961 The «Testa skiing technique» is acknowledged by Interverband (inter association) and by the Skischulverband (ski school association). Giovanni Testa is Galilei of ski sport «Sunshine courses» where skiing is sold as a common group experience are booming! Up to 3000 ski fans come already to the first courses Guest structure is more and more changing and children start to ski earlier and earlier. Introduction of the ski kindergarten at Salastrains with pick up and bring back service A «hen-coop» served as first ski school shack at Salastrains. In this year it is replaced by an old military barrack until a first chalet construction is finished and serves as ski school centre. 6 THEREDRULES
