1 March Inside Edge Volume 185 March 2019 HELLO FELLOW CLUB MEMBERS: It looks like Mother Nature is continuing her all-out assault on Northern California. We have had SNOW, SNOW, and more SNOW- so much snow that you can t even get up there to enjoy the snow, what with I-80 being closed for 4 days in a row. Snow pack is at 150% of normal and Squaw had a record 25 feet of snow- just in February! This will certainly be a winter that goes down in the record books and spawns a litany of old-age stories, all starting with When I was your age, the snow was so deep With all the fresh new snow, you would think that the powder skiers would be in Pow heaven, but there is a dark side to having so much untracked snow at your disposal. No responsible powder skier ever wants to waste a freshie, so there is incredible pressure on them to make sure all the untracked powder stashes get appropriately used up before the next snow comes along to create new ones. When new storms are arriving on a daily basis, this pressure to make sure no snow goes untracked can be overwhelming. Unfortunately, some skiers have been known to turn to alcohol to manage the stress. You ve probably seen them- they are one with the fanny packs full of airline miniatures, or the ones standing at the bar in the ski lodge at 10:30 in the morning pretending that their Irish/Kahlúa coffee is really a regular latte. Or perhaps you ve seen the ultimate embarrassment: a skier pulled over by ski patrol for a SkiUI (pronounced Ski-you-eye). Pull over, Sir. I stopped you because you were weaving back there But, sir, thats how I always ski! Save it for the judge. I need to have you do some sobriety tests. Just in case you ever find yourself in this embarrassing situation, as a public service, I am giving you hints on passing the tests here so that you can practice them next time you are on the snow, and hopefully save yourself from be taken away for a SkiUI. Keep in mind that the officer will not let you take off your skis to do these tests- you must do all of them with your skis on. Position of Attention/Nose Touch: Stand straight up with your skis pointed directly downhill. Tilt your head back and close your eyes. Touch your nose alternately with your right index finger first, then your left index finger. Be sure not to use the finger next to your index finger during the test, as this may be interpreted by the officer as evidence of a bad attitude. If you start sliding down the hill uncontrollably, make sure to keep your eyes closed for the required 30 seconds. Hint: It is always best to make sure there are no large trees in front of you before you start this one. Walk the Line: Imagine a straight line in front of you in the snow. Place your left ski on the line, then place your right ski in front of it directly on the line, with the tail touching the tip of the left ski. Hint: Always ask the officer if you can do a couple warm up yoga positions before starting this test. Shorter skis are better- this is somewhat more difficult in Nordic jumping skis. Finger Count: Without taking off your gloves, touch the tip of each finger in order to the thumb while reciting the alphabet backwards. You must complete this in 10 seconds. I want to THANK all the members that have been helping remove snow off the front deck. The pictures that have been sent to me are amazing.

Please contact me to make a reservation for either weekend.

One of the trustees will confirm if your help is actually needed for that weekend. The actual cleaning work weekend will be limited to 18-20 people.

2 MODESTO SKI CLUB LODGE NEWS Greetings! Well the snow has started falling and has not stopped. We have so much snow it s been a challenge to get to the Lodge on the weekends due to all the storms. I want to THANK all the members that have been helping remove snow off the front deck. The pictures that have been sent to me are amazing. We have two different weekends set up in the Spring to do some maintenance and the work weekend for cleaning. Please contact me to make a reservation for either weekend. I will be letting the Trustee s know who signs up for the maintenance weekend as they are in charge of all the projects. One of the trustees will confirm if your help is actually needed for that weekend. The actual cleaning work weekend will be limited to people. The cleaning work weekend includes 4 meals as well. I will NOT be at the maintenance weekend. Maintenance Weekend: April 26-28, 2019 Work Weekend: May 5-7, 2019 Be sure to do your part in cleaning the Lodge when you stay. 3 Greetings MSC members. Last month when I wrote in the newsletter we were doing the snow dance Well IT WORKED!!!! so don t dance on the week-ends or you may not get to the Lodge to enjoy it! On the other hand it also looks like we could be skiing until the end of April (which is only 51 days but who s counting?). We had a great outing up at Bear Valley last month. Over 20 members showed up and braved the wind and blowing snow to have a GREAT time skiing and sharing lunch together. The Sun was out but the temp held the snow for the whole day. Powder hounds got their fair share of fresh snow and the small crowds let the you get all the runs you could want. As Bill Silveira would say Best day ever. MSC elections are coming up fast and the 1st VP slot is still available. I would like any member to come forward and let me know if you would like to be placed on the ballot for this year s 1 st VP. Please see me at the meeting next week, send me a text or or call me on my cell. The MSC needs a 1 st VP. Happy Trails, Ed Ciszek 1 st VP General Meeting at Fuzios- March 12 th General Announcement: The Modesto Ski Club will need a new Treasurer as well as a new 1 st VP for the season- beginning May 1. Elections will be taking place April 9 th at the General Meeting. Debra Clover will be training the new treasurer after elections. 3

4 MSC Activities 2019 Hello Fellow Ski Bums: Gosh, do you think we have enough snow this year?! I ve heard from some of the members the Lodge is full, the snow is fresh, and they are ready for some fun on the home front. March 2 Snow Fest at Dodge Ridge hosted by Kim Moss. This will include personal fundraising pages so each person and team can fundraise independently and conveniently. Each participant is asked to raise a minimum of $150. Participants receive lunch; enjoy live entertainment, beer tasting, games, raffles and more! They will also need some volunteers to help them with the event and it is a lot of fun even for non-skiers. Far West Ski Association & Bay Area Council The BAC will have 94 spots for the FWSA ski week to Big Sky Montana from Jan 25 to Feb 1st They will be sending out BAC registration information for signup in mid March. The 2020 FWSA mini ski week will be to Big White resort in Canada from March 29-April 3rd, It s the home to the best snow in BC with the longest season so its a great choice for late season skiing. Our BAC mini ski week to four Utah resorts has been moved to Feb 19th to the 23rd, Skiing in both Big & Little cottonwood canyon with access to Alta, Snowbird, Solitude & Brighten will give you a variety & fun ski adventure! All the resorts are the IKON pass with easy shuttles drop off in front of the resorts. Look for flyers & information in mid-march. The mammoth trip was delayed because of uncertain weather.
