1 December Inside Edge Volume 182 December 2018 HELLO FELLOW CLUB MEMBERS: It was a bit breezy and overcast outside, and Veronica and I were cuddled up warm inside on the couch, relaxing and enjoying a little quiet time. She quietly put her arms around me and whispered those three little words in my ear that warm the cockles of my heart and make me feel so good: Winter Storm Warning! Yes! Snow on the way! Oh, come on, you thought I meant those other three little words? I Love You is ok, I guess, but with ski season getting under way, I ll take Winter Storm Warning any time! After all, snow is the best therapy I know. Cooped up in an office all day long with stale air? Tired of hearing the boss getting on your nerves, complaining, making inane demands? Rude customers making snide remarks? Kids fighting and testing your patience? Bored sitting around the house putting off fix-up projects? You need Dr. Ski Bums magic elixir. Take two feet of snow, apply liberally, and call in sick in the morning. TCT (Therapeutic Carve Turns) is just what the doctor ordered to maintain optimal mental health (if your doctor wears a Spyder Jacket and Bogner pants). What you need is a daily regimen of crisp clean psychotropic mountain air rushing past you while that fresh powder billows up around your knees. And best of all, the support group meets every afternoon after the last run at the lodge bar. After the hectic Thanksgiving weekend, Veronica and I decided to take the cure up at NorthStar with our friends, Ed & Pat Moody (refugees from Modesto now living in Truckee). We quite accidentally timed it perfectly, arriving at the Lodge just as the first big snow fall hit. Anxious to find out if our skis (and legs) still worked properly, we were first in line at the gondola to make our way up to the fresh snow. We covered the mountain, hitting up all the old familiar spots disguised with a new coat of undisturbed white. It was epic, and we were exhausted by 10:30, with the sore quads to prove it. We enjoyed Ed & Pat s hospitality, which made the day one of those special memorable ski days. What a great way to start the season. So, what are you waiting for? You don t have to have snow in your veins like some Olympic athlete to enjoy the mountains, you just need to go there. The lodge is waiting for you with open arms whispering those three little words: Come on in! Or maybe if you re real lucky, it will be Winter Storm Warning! Yours in skiing, Don Shaver, President theprez.modestoskiclub@gmail.com 1
2 MODESTO SKI CLUB LODGE NEWS Season s Greetings!! We finally have snow in Sierra s. I sure hope the storm systems keep coming to bless with rain and snow. The added bonus is Clean Air Day s. Wow, I never thought I would miss being able to spend time outside with the poor Air Quality from the Camp Fire. I would like to remind all YEAR KEY HOLDER S that if you have not sent in payment for your key, please SEND YOUR PAYMENT OF $ for the following year. I will have keys at the Christmas Party and can take payments by check for the renewal of your key if you are planning to attend the event. Otherwise please communicate with me how you are going to get your payment turned in for your Key. If you hold a key and did not exchange it after the locks have been changed you will need to also send the key from last year. The key will not work in the current locks. I have a couple of housekeeping issues to remind members and guests when they stay at the Lodge. Please check all cupboards and refrigerators for any food that could spoil!! Throw it out or take it home with you!! Be sure to dump all trash from all rooms and the trash compactor bag should be changed only paper is acceptable to be in the trash compactor when you leave for home. TURN LIGHTS OFF when you are not in that room or when leaving the lodge. PLEASE DO NOT USE THE VACCUUM CLEANER to clean the hearth or the fireplace. Please use a broom and dust pan. That soot has been found in all the vacuum cleaners. SO PLEASE ONLY USE A BROOM!! Please let me know if anything needs attention or if a supply is out. Best way to contact me is via or leave a message on my home phone machine. I will give priority to requests using this method of reserving a bed. mnighte@aol.com Home Phone Lodge Chairperson Michelle Nightengale 2
3 Season s Greetings Fellow members. Well, we have had our first storm of the season and it looks like there will be skiing for Christmas this year! Let s hope the trend continues with dumping three or four feet a storm so we get to the 100% open for all the resorts in the Truckee area and full reservoirs for next year. Besides dusting of the boots and tuning up the skis be sure to get out those dancing shoes and Christmas ties, as the annual MSC Christmas party will be here before you know it. This will be a great evening with food and friends to help get us all in the Holiday Spirit. Merry Christmas to all, see you at the Party, Happy Trails, Ed Ciszek 1st V P General Meeting at Fuzios- Tuesday December 11th Activities 2018 Hello Fellow Ski Bums: Looks like we are off to a good start this year looking at all the snow in the area!! 6 MSC Ski Race Season News Hi, Racers and Wannabe Racers, Our snow dances have been successful, so now it is time to tune and wax our skis, get our ski clothes out of the moth balls, clear the spiderwebs out of our boots and helmets get to the mountains. We held our race league meeting a few weeks ago. Due to the declining numbers of racers we have been losing some money the last few years. We hope with a good start of the ski season we will get some more people interested in racing again. Why are we so enthusiastic about racing? There are many reasons. It is a great way to meet people from all over the Bay Area, Sacramento, Tahoe and Reno. I am lucky to be able to ski a lot and I always run into people I know from our league. Racing also improve your skiing a lot. No matter what level skier (or boarder) you are, we have a class of racers of your ability. As racers, we get lift tickets at a real discount; most ski resorts in the dollars range. And, you get to hang out with teammates from the Modesto Ski Club! How many chances do you get to share the lodge with racers like Dick Shawkey, Chuck and Linda Hennings, Tim Hutton, etc., etc. And of course, our returning racer fresh from the College of Idaho race team, Emily Gahn. To sign up for our 2019 season, go to our website, olrc.org. and go to the registration page. The fee for adults is $125 and for Juniors $40. If you are a new racer you have to purchase a bib for $20. Please pay by check, made out to the Modesto Ski club and get it to me by January 10 th. All racers make sure you make reservations for the lodge by to Michelle Nightingale and confirm your reservation the week before the race. And when we use the lodge the same rules apply about leaving the lodge clean and ready for the next members. I hope many of you will decide to join us for the coming season. Your race director, Maarten Vandermeer mavdmeer@comcast.net P.O. Box1341 Lockeford, Ca
