1 July Inside Edge Volume 177 July 2018 HELLO FELLOW CLUB MEMBERS: Another July, another triple digit day! How hot was it, you ask? Well it was so hot that chickens were laying omelettes, birds were dipping their worms in Nestea, and your bread is already toasted when you get home from the store. It was so hot, you can wash and dry your clothes at the same time. You don t have to cook your lobsters on the stove, you can just throw them in the pool. Funeral possessions are going through the drive-thru at Dairy Queen, and McDonald s is having a special: if you order a Big Mac, they will fry it on your hood. But seriously now, when the weather gets this hot, the only thing we can do is remember the words of that great philosopher and poet, Sly Stone, of Sly and the Family Stone, and look for Hot Fun in the Summertime, and we do have some of that hiding in the pages of this newsletter. It s T minus 21 days and counting to the All New & Improved Modesto Ski Club LUAU on July 21! Rob is fattening up the sacrificial pig and preparing a giant hole in Ron and Pam s yard for the roasting pit, so breakout the grass skirts. Rob also promises a poi tasting bar with a variety of exotics poi samples, such Whiskey Jack, French Vanilla, and Pina Colada poi (maybe). Speaking of fun, Bill and Judy Hamre have come up with another great idea for a real adventure. We will be camping at Huntington Lake just outside China Peak August It s a tranquil mountain lake full of fish just begging to be caught, or you can just can sit and relax, on the water or the shore, and enjoy a good book. Then there is our all new line up of summer Bar B Q potlucks, starting with our new 2nd VP Sharon Wolinski and Bernie Fairfield this coming July 10, followed by our treasurer Deb Clover on August 14, and finally the Dutch treat Bar B Q at Maarten and Camille Vandermeers on September 11. Or maybe you would rather have some hot fun AND do something good for our community at the same time! As you probably know, we are one of many organizations that support the Society for Disabilities. They are looking for volunteers to assist in their Adaptive Bike Camp which they host every year coming up July 9 through 15, from 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM each day, and for their annual adaptive water ski program, Waterskiing Unlimited coming up July 14 & 28, August 11 & 25, and September 8. The Bike Camp uses specially designed equipment and teaching methods that allow children and adults to learn to ride a two-wheeler within the one week camp. The Water Skiing Unlimited program provides access to the sport of water skiing for many blind, deaf, paraplegic, quadriplegic and developmentally disabled individuals who would otherwise be denied the opportunity to share in this exhilarating activity. You need to be a strong swimmer in all levels of water ski ability, and be able to give at least one Saturday from 8:30 to 3:00 pm. Or if you are not so athletically inclined, you can work at their thrift store, speakers bureau, office, or Loan Closet. For more details, you can access their website off of the Modesto Ski Club home page, talk to Marci Boucher, or call directly at Or you can just do like me and contribute to the community by saving energy (see picture)! It s your choice, so pick one and you can t go wrong! Yours in skiing, Don Shaver, President theprez.modestoskiclub@gmail.com. 1

9 Bike Camp is July 9-13, 2018 Society for disabilities is hosting their annual Bike Camp on July 9-13th, The purpose of the day camp is to provide an "immersion" experience in bicycling for individuals with diverse abilities. The bikes used have specially designed equipment that allow individuals who have had difficulty learning to ride a two-wheeled bike to learn to do just that in a one-week camp. Camp sessions are one hour long and during this time individuals are encouraged to spend as much time as possible riding their bicycle. Adapted Bike Camp July 9-13, 2018 Sessions start at 8:15AM, 9:30AM & 10:45AM Cardozo Middle School Do you want to help someone learn how to ride a bike? Become a volunteer NOW and see all the happy, smiling faces of those you help. We are always in need of volunteers! June 23 & 30 July 14 & 28 August 11 & 25 September 8 Water Skiing Unlimited is a water ski program for children and adults with diverse abilities. This program provides access to the sport of water skiing for many blind, deaf, paraplegic, quadriplegic and developmentally delayed individuals who would otherwise be denied the opportunity to share in these exhilarating activities. With the help of the trained volunteers and adaptive equipment, there are very few disabilities that would prevent participation in the sport of water skiing. The minimum age to participate is 7 years old. Volunteers are needed in the water and on the shore (base camp). Minimum age to volunteer is 14. Excellent swimmers are encouraged to help, but it s not a requirement. For any questions or concerns, please contact our office at (209) or channa@societyfordisabilities.org 9
