1 December Volume 170 December HELLO FELLOW CLUB MEMBERS: Well, here it is, December already, Christmas right around the corner, stores full of busy shoppers (with big elbows), COSTCO a war zone, and the mall is pandemonium unleashed. This prompts the proverbial question raised each year at this time: Why haven t you been up to the lodge yet? If you have been since the snow fell, you can skip to the last paragraph, but if you haven t, you need to get up there. Consider for a moment how tremendously fortunate we are to have this valuable asset. Tahoe is a destination resort for the entire US and many other countries. People from all over pay hundreds and even thousands of dollars to travel to Tahoe, and ski and stay at the resorts. Consider that we only need to drive a couple hours and don t have to pay an arm and a leg or take out a 2nd mortgage on the house to spend a week at a beautiful and conveniently located lodge. You can legitimately tell your friends in your most nonchalant manner (self assured smile included) that We are going up to the Lake this week to stay at our lodge we own there. You are not required to mention to them that there happen to be about 150 other owners of that lodge too. What they don t know won t hurt them. In fact, it is so important that you appreciate how truly blessed we are to have this opportunity that the Board has decided that anyone who is a member of Modesto Ski Club and has never been to the lodge (never defined as the last 2 ski seasons), will henceforth be required to wear a scarlet L on their sweater. You will be required to endure the scorn and ridicule heaped upon you by your fellow club members for your failure to avail yourself and your family of this golden opportunity. You can only redeem yourself by spending 72 continuous hours at the Lodge, part of which must include the Bar of America, memorizing the names of all the restaurants in Truckee, and having breakfast on Sunday morning at the Squeeze Inn. If you don t ski or snowboard, there are still plenty of other things to do there. The Donner Lake film festival will be starting soon. The Northstar theater will be showing that classic film with Steve Martin and Queen Latifah, Suicide on Skis, and the theater in Squaw Valley Village is showing the ever popular movie, Ski Wars, the quintessential battle of good (skiers) versus evil (snowboarders). Fans never tire of watching Luke Snowalker battle his nemesis, Board Vader, waiting for the classic line Luke, I am not your father, I AM YOUR SON, DUDE! Speaking of great movies, I hope you did not miss the latest Warren Miller movie at the State Theater recently. This has become an annual tradition, and is not only the perfect way to get your blood flowing for the coming ski season, its a major fund raiser for the Society for Disabilities. Warren made his first ski movie in 1949, and has made one every year since. His younger associates now do most of the hard work in making the movie, but Warren does have a cameo appearance at the beginning of this one, in which he appears in his wheel chair, looks right into the camera, and says What time does Bingo start? before he is hurriedly rushed off camera. Hope to see all of your up at the Lodge soon! Yours in skiing, Don Shaver, President theprez.modestoskiclub@gmail.com

2 MODESTO SKI CLUB LODGE NEWS Hello! We made it through the Thanksgiving Holiday. Christmas is coming and hopefully some more snow. The Lodge has had a pretty busy November. December is starting out light with reservations due to lack of snowfall. Hope Mother Nature turns on the rain & snow. Some housekeeping reminders when at the Lodge. Please be sure to always SIGN IN and SIGN OUT with dates. Even if you stop to visit the Lodge and are not staying the night you should always sign in and out, regardless. At the Lodge work weekend I was looking at the book and noticed not all the guests and members from previous stays have signed in and or signed out. I would know this since I produce the bed list for the Lodge. So be sure to sign in and sign out!!! Make sure to turn lights off when not in the room or are heading home or out for the evening. Clean up after yourself in every aspect of the Lodge. Do not leave any perishable food in the refrigerator. If you leave a condiment or perhaps ice cream, write the date on the item so the next person knows it s safe to eat and its fair game if left in the freezer or refrigerator. Please use my address to book reservations, not the Club Website Link because sometimes those s go into my spam folder. If you don t get a response within a few hours send me another and don t use the Club Website link. Not sure why it puts those s into my spam folder. I am unable to see any spam on the smart phone. I get to the computer maybe 1-2 times a week to clean out the spam folder. mnighte@aol.com is my . You can also leave a message on my home phone for Lodge inquiry s Thanks! Michelle Nightengale, Lodge Chairperson

4 MSC ACTIVITIES 2017 Greetings Fellow MSC Members and Friends The holiday season has arrived and with it, all the trials, tribulations, and panic attacks of party planning, gift buying, sending cards, decorating, etc. Thankfully there is one festive moment that is approaching, and that is the Annual MSC Xmas Party on Wednesday, December 13. There are 77 people to date who will be dressing up, jumping in their sleighs to converge at the Vintage Gardens in Modesto to wine, dine, and dance the night away. This year we will be entertained with the lovely voice and guitar accompaniment by Susan Lukito before dinner and then Clarence and Kathy Teem will be hosting the dancing music with a romantic and festive selection. Last but not least, each attendee will be given a free ticket for a special drawing and a chance to participate in this years "Lets Make A Deal ". On Friday January 26th, Garth and Kathy Joliff will be hosting : "MSC SKI DAY AT DODGE RIDGE", with a Bar B Que. For more details or to sign up, contact Jim Sylvia, , also, there will be a signup sheet at the next meeting. In February, the weekend of 23rd-25th, Clarence and Kathy Teem will be hosting a : "Shrimp, and Wine Dinner" on Saturday 24, 2018, 5:30pm at the MSC Lodge in Truckee. Also, contact me or signups will be available at the January/February meeting at Fuzios. As this year draws to a close, One cannot help but to look back and remember all of the great moments we ve shared. Whether it was in San Francisco attending the performance of Beach Blanket Babylon; hiking up to Cleo s Bath at Pinecrest; Waging on your favorite thoroughbred at Golden Gate Fields; a romantic Moonlight Kayak ride in the Stockton Delta, Cioppino and Wine Feast; Family Bowling Night. This was definitely a year to remember I would like to recognize the support from Cheryl and Pat Kelly, Natalie Frisk, Bill and Judy Hamre, Marsha and Bill Silveira, Ed Ciszek, Garth and Kathy Joliff, Rob Orr, Debra Budding, Rachel Sparks, Ardyth Little, Greg DeBree, and Pat and Allan Ramsey. I would also like to acknowledge two special members, Randy and Denise Cook who hosted two of the most popular events this year: The Membership Mixer and the Chili CookOff. These events were held at the incredible MAN CAVE, where not only did Randy and Denise do much of the setup and organizing, but they cheerfully volunteered when they were in the middle of a complete moving and remodeling project!!! On behalf of the Modesto Ski Club and myself, TO ALL OF YOU who helped on these activities and effortlessly worked on 2018's calendar of events, THANK YOU!!! So with that said, to all of my fellow MSC members, MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A JOYOUS NEW YEAR! Jim Sylvia 2nd V.P. drjamesj80@charter.net

12 MSC Ski / Race Season News It is that time of the year again. Halloween is behind us, so we are looking to the sky for clouds to roll in. That might just happen next weekend. All major resorts started making snow, so the ski season is near. We are getting ready to put our race team together. The last few years our team lost a lot of members. A few due to injuries but several racers decided to give up racing. So, what are the benefits of joining the race team? Well, there are many. The first, and I think the most important one, is the camaraderie at our Lodge on race day and on the race course. We meet skiers from all over the Bay and the Reno Lake Tahoe area and end up skiing with new friends all the time. The second benefit is your improved skiing ability. By forcing yourself to follow the gates you will become a better overall skier. Then we get to go to ski major resorts for a discounted ticket price. Last year most tickets were in the $50 to $60-dollar range, and we went to Mammoth for the finals last year. Great mountain with great snow. I hope you will give it a try this year. We have levels for every ability, so you always compete with racers in your own class. On race day we have three groups; Upper Course, Intermediate Course, and Lower Course. We normally start the first group at 10AM, second at 11:30AM and the third group around 1PM so there is plenty of time to free-ski. The sign-ups start November first Go to and click on the racer registration link. Download the liability release form, sign it and turn it in with a check payable to the MSC and mail it to me: P.O. Box 1341 Lockeford, CA The fees are: $125 for adults and $40 for Juniors. If you just want to try it, we welcome drop-ins for $30 per race. For more information contact me at: mavdmeer@comcast.net or at I am not available for a few races, but Tim Hutton has agreed to help this year. Tim is one of the people who always assists the league with sign-ups on race day, so I am grateful for his help. Your Race Director, Maarten Vandermeer
