We are returning to the picturesque Vail Cascade Resort and Spa for our 2013 ski meeting. We have assembled outstanding continuing education programs provided by a distinguished panel of clinicians, all experts in their respective specialties. Those of us who have attended this meeting over the years understand the value of the continuing education received not only from the scheduled speakers, but also from one another. Of course, most of this occurs on the ski slopes as you discuss each day s presentation or other topics with you colleagues. The Vail Valley is renowned for unparalleled ski terrain and other play in the snow winter activities. Vail is the largest resort in the United States with over 5200 acres of diverse and expansive skiing in the world and blessed with over 300 days of sunshine a year! Vail Mountain provides a world-class skiing/snowboarding experience but most
3 importantly, a world-class guest experience. The town of Vail is a cozy pedestrian village with cobblestone streets, fine dining, elegant shopping and everything in-between. Our base for the week of fun and education will be the Vail Cascade Resort and Spa. The Resort is a true mountain retreat where roaring fireplaces, stimulating meeting spaces and personalized service all come together to create unmatched comfort. Vail Cascade is a true reflection of its guests refined yet relaxed, sophisticated yet understated, upscale yet accessible. Thoughtfully appointed guest rooms and suites offer premier ski-in/ski-out accommodations with direct mountain access. Breakfast meetings for the registered doctors and staff will be Monday-Friday mornings from 7:00 to 9:00. An après-ski session will be held on Wednesday afternoon from 4:00-6:00. Our annual ski and snowboard races will be held on Thursday morning and our adults only Cocktail Party and Awards Banquet will be held that evening at 7:00. We begin the Continuing Education on Monday Morning with Dan Wicker from Cain Watters and Associates. He will be presenting on taxes, investments and financial freedom in these difficult economic times. Tuesday, Dr. Anthony Molina will update the group on implants, including the design, restoration and their use in the pediatric population. Dr. Suzi Seale, a longtime ski meeting attendee, will speak at both the morning and the après-ski sessions.you will not want to miss Dr. Seale s presentation on pulp therapy for immature permanent teeth. Thursday morning s session will feature Dr. James Kessler of The Pankey Institute. Dr. Kessler will give us an interesting and informative presentation on merging new technology with proven principals. Friday morning will give us two speakers. The first will be Dr. Bryan on medical emergencies in the dental office. Concluding our week of continuing education, AAPD President, Dr. Joel Berg, will present the State of The Academy. We look forward to spending the week with you. To our regulars, it will be great to see you again. To those attending for the first time, we welcome you but be advised----this meeting is habit-forming! Our 2014 meeting will be in Big Sky, Montana. I bet we will see you there as well! 9 What to Pack/How to Dress One of the keys to enjoying your time in our winter environment is to make sure that you are fully prepared. The following is a quick list of how we recommend dressing for our winter weather. 1. Be sure to dress in layers layering keeps you warmer and lets you adjust clothing as the temperatures rise or fall. The layer closest to your skin should be made of a wicking material so that it removes perspiration away from your skin. Two to three medium-weight layers are usually warmer than one bulky garment. 2. The outermost layer should be wind and water resistant. This includes your jacket, pants, and gloves. Clothes such as jeans and sweat pants are not suitable as they absorb water, which makes you cold and wet. 3. If you chose not to wear a helmet, be sure to wear a hat at all times as most of your body heat escapes out of your head. A neck gator is also an excellent piece of clothing that keeps cold air from getting on your neck, and is much less cumbersome than a scarf. 4. At our higher elevation, the sun s rays are less filtered. Sunlight also reflects off the surface of the snow, making the rays even more intense. To protect against sunburn and damage to your eyes, you should always wear sunglasses or goggles and sunscreen at all times. 5. It is important to carry goggles with you at all times goggles offer protection against the winter elements (snow, ice, and wind) and provide you with greater visibility while skiing and snowboarding during tough weather conditions. 6. Your feet are also a very important element when skiing and snowboarding. Cold or uncomfortable feet can ruin a day on the slopes. You will want to wear only one pair of ski or snowboard specific socks. Bulky wool socks are a thing of the past today you can get a wool-blend that is lightweight yet warm. 7. Your hands are also another important part of your body that is often overlooked. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Lightweight driving gloves will not be adequate. Wool or rag type mittens will get wet and should not be used. It is always a good idea to spend a few extra dollars on a good pair of waterproof gloves. 9 What to Pack/How to Dress
