We are returning to the slope side Summit at Big Sky for our 2014 Ski Meeting. We have assembled outstanding continuing education programs provided by a distinguished panel of clinicians, all experts in their respective specialties. Those of us who have attended this meeting over the years, understand the value of the continuing education received not only from the scheduled speakers, but also from one another. Of course, most of this occurs on the ski slopes as you discuss each day s presentation or other topics with you colleagues. With a year round population of 1,400 residents, the small community of Big Sky, Montana is a big time destination, both in summer and in winter. Big Sky has over 25 restaurants and eateries for visitors to enjoy, over 40 shops selling everything from groceries to books and art, a diverse music environment with outdoor summer concerts and a variety of other seasonal shows and events. Big Sky, Montana is surrounded by the Gallatin National Forest and the Spanish Peaks Area. Big Sky s largest attraction is Lone Mountain, at 11,166 feet, which is famous for its dry powder (400 annual snowfall), awesome Big Sky skiing and low crowds.
3 Our base for the week of fun and education will be the Summit at Big Sky. The Summit is one of the finest slope side properties in the Rockies with primary highcapacity lifts only 100 yards away. It features eight residential levels, two public levels with reception, concierge, and the Talus and Summit Board Room for meetings. Guests enjoy a fitness center with outdoor heated soaking pool, Peaks restaurant, Carabiner lounge, Provisions resort wear and gift shop, espresso cart, and on-mountain ski storage. The Summit combines luxury appointments with a prime location in the heart of the Mountain Village Center. The Summit at Big Sky will provide you and your family an effortless ski vacation while you take advantage of stimulating continuing education. The meeting will begin on Sunday evening with a Welcome Reception sponsored by Cain-Watters and Associates for Jeffrey Jaynes all registered guests from 6:00-9:00. Breakfast meetings for the registered doctors and staff will be Monday-Friday mornings from 7:00 to 9:00. An après-ski session will be held on Wednesday afternoon from 4:00-6:00. Our annual ski and snowboard races will be held on Thursday morning and our adults only Cocktail Party and Awards Banquet will be held that evening at 7:30. We begin the Continuing Education on Monday Morning with former AAPD President, Dr. Keith Morley. He will be presenting on the changes and challenges that he feels our profession will be dealing with in the very near future. If your pediatric dental practice has not already embraced social media, you are behind the times. On Tuesday, Brodie Tyler, an expert in social media and search-engine optimization, will give us insight in how to get new patients from these new and evolving sources. Dr. Cavan Brunsden, a longtime ski meeting attendee, will speak at the morning and special après-ski afternoon session on treating and managing the difficult child. Treating a terminally ill child is always a challenge for us both emotionally and clinically. Dr. Carrie Neuhardt, a Pediatric Hematologist-Oncologist will speak at Thursday morning s session on the blood disorders and cancers we may encounter in our patient population. Friday morning will give us two speakers. The first will be Dr. Bruce Weiner. Bruce, a former ski meeting coordinator, will share his tips and wisdom on continuing to enjoy being a pediatric dentist! Concluding our week of continuing education, AAPD President, Dr. Warren Brill, will present the State of The Academy. We look forward to spending the week with you. To our regulars, it will be great to see you again. To those attending for the first time, we welcome you but be advised----this meeting is habit-forming. Our 2015 meeting will be in Snowmass, Colorado. I bet we will see you there as well! Kind regards, Jeffrey Jaynes, Conference Chairman 3 Invitation

9 What to Pack/How to Dress One of the keys to enjoying your time in our winter environment is to make sure that you are fully prepared. The following is a quick list of how we recommend dressing for our winter weather. 1. Be sure to dress in layers layering keeps you warmer and lets you adjust clothing as the temperatures rise or fall. The layer closest to your skin should be made of a wicking material so that it removes perspiration away from your skin. Two to three medium-weight layers are usually warmer than one bulky garment. 2. The outermost layer should be wind and water resistant. This includes your jacket, pants, and gloves. Clothes such as jeans and sweat pants are not suitable as they absorb water, which makes you cold and wet. 3. If you choose not to wear a helmet, be sure to wear a hat at all times as most of your body heat escapes out of your head. A neck gator is also an excellent piece of clothing that keeps cold air from getting on your neck, and is much less cumbersome than a scarf. 4. At our higher elevation, the sun s rays are less filtered. Sunlight also reflects off the surface of the snow, making the rays even more intense. To protect against sunburn and damage to your eyes, you should always wear sunglasses or goggles and sunscreen at all times. 5. It is important to carry goggles with you at all times goggles offer protection against the winter elements (snow, ice, and wind) and provide you with greater visibility while skiing and snowboarding during tough weather conditions. 6. Your feet are also very important elements when skiing and snowboarding. Cold or uncomfortable feet can ruin a day on the slopes. You will want to wear only one pair of ski or snowboard-specific socks. Bulky wool socks are a thing of the past today you can get a wool-blend that is lightweight yet warm. 7. Your hands are also another important part of your body that is often overlooked. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Lightweight driving gloves will not be adequate. Wool or rag type mittens will get wet and should not be used. It is always a good idea to spend a few extra dollars on a good pair of waterproof gloves. 9 What to Pack/How to Dress
