Sweep Newsletter Fall 2017 ion g e R l a Cenitvrsion h t u o S tral D Cen southcentral.org/ I will be submitting this article to our Editor, prior to attending the MSAA meeting at Devils Head and the Division Meeting in Northern Michigan. I will give an update for these meetings in the Winter edition. Steve Paladini Region Director Region Update: By the time you receive this issue of the SWEEP, you should have successfully completed your annual OEC Refresher by participating in either the traditional or the hybrid version or be scheduled to attend one. After 11 years, on June 30, 2017, Paul Fuchs stepped down as the Section Chief, Section I. Erik Hudson of Alpine Valley has agreed to be the Section Chief, Section I for the remainder of the term. Also, remember to keep your CPR card current! As the season begins, each patroller must also participate in the On Hill Refresher along with performing Chair Evacuation as required by area management. Tom Merritt also stepped down as the Region s Toboggan Adviser. Stepping into his position is Jeremy McPherson of the Cascade Mountain Ski Patrol. Awards Introduction It s hard to believe that a little more than a year has gone by since I stepped into this position. Truth be told, it takes an immense amount of organization and time commitment: nights at home on the computer and phone, attending activities at the patrol level, throughout the Region and Division. It s been enjoyable, rewarding, and quite the educational experience. I have a better understanding of NSP and feel I m a better patroller for accepting the position. But, I haven t done it alone. I cannot thank the Region Staff and Program Advisors enough, for their help, dedication and hard work. By the time you receive this issue of the SWEEP, I will have started to visit most of the 15 patrols at approximately 11 refreshers held in the Region. I plan to visit most, if not all the Region s activities during the upcoming season. Last season, I enjoyed meeting many patrollers and I look forward to meeting with as many of you as possible this season and listening to your feedback and suggestions. Refreshers If you happen to see any of these individuals during the season, please thank them for their service to the Region. Region Staff Openings The Region has three open positions. The Avalanche Advisor under ARD Randy Witt along with the Leadership Advisor and Safety Advisor under ARD Brad Bailey. If you are interested in any of these positions or would like more information, please contact the appropriate ARD Division Meeting South Central Division is hosting the 2018 Division Meeting in Wisconsin Dells, showcasing our Region! Planning meetings are taking place. The next one is in November and is on the Region calendar. If you wish to help, please join us. What a great opportunity to represent your home location and demonstrate your leadership skills to the NSP organization! As I travel to this year s refreshers and scheduled events, I will continue to talk about submitting for the 12 outstanding awards for your fellow patrollers. I m sure each of you know an exceptional instructor, patrol director, young adult patroller, etc. that deserves special recognition. Last year I was pleased when the Region received seven nominations for the 12 outstanding awards and this year I challenge you again, the South Central Region members, to submit nominations for these 12 awards! The Awards Committee meets three times during the season, but please remember to start early! Dates for the Awards meetings can be found on the Region calendar. If you have any questions or would like to consider a nomination, please start with contacting your Section Chief. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Patrol Director Kevin Ketter and the Little Switzerland Ski Patrol, for being the first runner up for the Division s Outstanding Large Patrol. Also, Jim Hubing for being first runner up for Division s Outstanding Patrol Director.

Upcoming Region Election This season both Section Chiefs for Section I and IV are up for re election. Please see John Davis s article for more information regarding procedures and dates. Additional Information In this issue of the SWEEP, you will find the current Organization Chart, the Staff Directory as well as the Region Calendar for your reference. Please notice, per a couple of requests, I have added the Patrol Directors contact information, as shown on the web site, to the Staff Directory. Please take a look at the calendar and consider signing up for a class or program to enhance your NSP career. These items can also be found on the Region s web site. Finally I would like to share the following article I wrote in 2014 for the Nordic Mountain, Butt Pack News. At the time, I was traveling the Region as an OEC IT. If it inspires only a few, it has accomplished what I hoped it would, then and now. Break Out of Your Routine By: Steve Paladini (2014) During the months of September and October, not only did I attend the Instructor and Full Refresher for Nordic Mountain, but also did the same with the Mt. LaCrosse, Whitetail Ridge, Christmas Mountain and Ausblick Ski Patrols. I had the opportunity to observe, participate, demonstrate and speak with a lot of patrollers. In my observations, Ski Patrollers seem to be stuck in a routine. A lot of patrollers, have done, or will do, their entire career at the same hill. Each year we attend our respective refreshers, greet one another as old friends, with handshakes and hugs and catch up on the spring and summer months. When the snow is finally on the ground, we attend our On Hill Refreshers and take to the slopes, covering our shifts. For the most part, the majority of our calls are routine. Once in a Patroller 101 while, we respond to something more challenging and together as a team, the problem gets solved. At the end of the season we part ways, again with handshakes and hugs. Time passes, the leaves begin to change color and again, the routine starts over. Recently, you received the Sweep Newsletter from the South Central Region. If you took the time to read through it, there are plenty of ways to break out of your routine. The Region is holding seminars, classes and clinic/evaluations, for all disciplines. If you happened to throw the newsletter away, you can find the same information on the Region web site. Some of what is offered only requires a day, others a weekend, while some require a much larger time commitment that can extend into seasons. Breaking out of any routine is hard. In this case, depending on what you choose: you may be away from your family on numerous weekends there could be hotel, gas and food bills, along with the occasional new part for your vehicle. Weeknight study groups may be organized. Along with hours of driving on snow covered roads and hours of waiting with an upset stomach. Disappointment may also be a part of it. I asked a fellow patroller, why have you put yourself through this? Here is part of the answer: by getting involved in some of what is offered, you can expand and improve your OEC and or ski skills, as it relates to handling complex situations involving decision making, problem management and leadership. These attributes can parallel directly to your job. Who doesn't want to make better decisions, resolve problems, and demonstrate leadership? After all, that is how you get a promotion, get more pay, and be viewed as a more valuable team member. I ask that you take a look at the schedule and take some time to break out of your routine to improve both your volunteer and professional endeavors. If you re not sure you want to make a commitment, volunteer to help at one and see what it will take. Have a safe season and I ll see you on the slopes! Steve As I am composing this piece for Patroller 101 it is Monday August 21st around 1:30 in the afternoon. I am sitting on the deck of a house in Driggs ID facing Grand Targhee and the Teton Mts. I went to Driggs to see the total eclipse for a couple of reasons. Driggs was in the line of totality, the weather is usually very very clear and with very few city lights the night time/eclipse darkened ski the stars really show up. The event today did not disappoint. How does my eclipse experience tie to P101? Hopefully you will get your candidates in line with NSP history and procedures. You will use P101 to make ropes and belays, risk management and toboggan handling clear to your candidates, clear as the Idaho sky, crystal clear. Hopefully you will also bring them out of the darkness into the light of the Patrollers roll in safety, scene management, and relations with our customers that IS guest services. Thom Rabaglia As I have said before, if you need assistance in presenting P101 the documents can be found in the Central Division web or you can contact me. Hopefully this has all been clear. CRYSTAL!

ARD Proficiency Toboggan instructors should be aware that the only course that satisfies this requirement is a Region or Division level Toboggan Trainer's Workshop (TTW). And because each participant is required to register on the NSP website for each course in which they plan to participate, we have no ability at the local or Region level to make exceptions. If your instructor certification is due to expire December 31, 2017, the NSP database will automatically drop your instructor status on that date if you have notcompleted a toboggan continuing education course within the last three years. See JMac's article for more information regarding Region TTW's this season. Eric Gesteland PD's: Make sure Your Refreshers are Properly Registered! It s always hard to shift from summer mode to ski season mode while we are still in water skiing saeson, but here it goes. Feet under the hips, stand tall, dorsiflex the ankles. Oh, and ABCDE s, DCAP BTLS, OPQRST aaaaand 1 and 2 and 3 and And for my next trick I will attempt to juggle these 3 chainsaws, blindfolded, while chewing gum and riding a unicycle in a swarm of bees. Thank you very much. I ll be here all season. Anyway, here we go We have now had a couple of years to get used to the new procedures for our OEC refreshers. Toboggan refreshers began using the same format last season. That means you need to register and conduct both an instructor refresher for your toboggan instructors and a refresher for your full patrol. An IT from a patrol other than your own must be chosen for both courses. The Region Toboggan Advisor will assign an IT for your patrol. The IT must attend at least one of your toboggan refresher sessions, ideally the instructor refresher. Please attend the PD s meeting in September for more information and guidance. Thank you Tom Merritt! Tom has chosen to step down as the Region Toboggan Advisor. We thank him for his many years of service and leadership. It has been a pleasure working with him. Don't expect him to disappear in to the sunset as he still plans to help with Region events. Welcome Aboard Jeremy McPherson... After lurking in the shadows the last couple of seasons as the Assistant Region Toboggan Advisor, Jeremy or JMac to his friends has graciously accepted the role as Region Toboggan Advisor. JMac brings some strong skills and experience that should help us keep moving our toboggan programs in a positive direction. Don't Let Your Instructor Status Lapse There are only three things you need to do to keep your instructor status current: 1. Instruct. You have to be active as an instructor every year. 2. Keep an Instructor Activity Log. Fortunately the new database has made this easier. If an IOR lists you as an instructor for a course there is now a record of it at National. Yay! 3. Attend a qualifying discipline specific continuing education course once every three years. Attending one course to satisfy this requirement for multiple disciplines is no longer an option. You have to attend one for each discipline in which you are an instructor. Awards Tom Wright As I wrote in the last Sweep, we had a very successful Awards program last season. We need to keep working on our submissions and continue to recognize deserving Patrollers. As we start to gather at refreshers and other activities, look around and talk to others about who might be candidates for certain awards. You can also talk to your Patrol Representative as to who might be deserving of an award. You can also help your Patrol Representative by gathering information on your nominee. Most important is to start as soon as possible! Sometime this Fall, probably in November, I will be holding Award Information meetings. I will be looking for meeting locations, one on the East side and one on the West side of the Region. If you or your Patrol are willing to host a session, please contact me so we can organize a session. I will also be bringing this up at the Patrol Representatives Meeting at the end of the month. One important item that will affect everyone is that all Award forms have been revised for 2017 and can be found at the NSP Web site. Awards submitted with old forms will not be accepted. Should you have any questions feel free to contact me. Until we see each other at refreshers and other training activities have a fun and enjoyable Fall.

Toboggan Program Outdoor Emergency Care Greetings South Central Region! My Name is Jeremy McPherson, but my patrol friends call me JMac. I am honored and excited to be your new Region Toboggan Advisor. First, please join me in thanking Tom Merritt for his work with this program. Tom has implemented a number of programmatic changes directed by both National and the Division. He left a solid foundation from which I hope to build. I'd like to personally thank Tom for the assistance he has provided so far during the transition. I hope to keep him involved with the region toboggan program I m going to have a lot of questions. Now a little about me. I m a Senior patroller starting my tenth year at Cascade Mountain. Some of you may know me from my involvement in the Madison Area OEC class or from various Senior events and clinics. I m looking forward to getting to know more of you at upcoming Toboggan Enhancement Seminars or Toboggan Trainers Workshops. Are you a toboggan handler that would like to learn new skills or enhance your existing skills? Are you contemplating making a run at Senior certification and need to polish up your toboggan skills? If you answered yes to any of these questions, a Toboggan Enhancement Seminar (TES) might be for you and you re in luck. We are holding a TES at Cascade on Sunday, January 21st. The fee for this seminar is $20. While we make every effort to keep your fee small, we need to help defray the travel expenses for instructors who travel to these events and offset the cost of maintaining Region equipment. Calling all Toboggan Instructors and Senior Evaluators. We will be holding two Toboggan Trainers Workshops (TTWs) this year. All Toboggan Instructors must participate in a continuing education event at least once every three years. Additionally, all Senior Toboggan Evaluators must be recalibrated at least once every three years. The only way to satisfy this requirement is to attend a region TTW or a Division Clinic. Attendance at Division Clinics has been limited to invitation only, so plan on attending one of the TTWs if you are due for continuing education this year. The first event will be held on Wednesday, January 10th at Alpine Valley. The second event will be held on Sunday, January 21st at Cascade Mountain. The Cascade event will be held in conjunction with the TES. Because continuing education is a National requirement, there will be no fee for attending a scheduled Region TTW. Enjoy the fall, and I hope to see you on the hill. David Kleinschmidt Hard to believe we are already thinking about refreshers and getting geared up for the coming season. Didn t seem that long ago we were just ending the season and attending the banquet. Hope you all had an enjoyable summer and spent some great quality time with your families. Refreshers are getting underway with several hills having theirs earlier this year. If you are unable to attend your own, please make sure to look at the region calendar and find one you can attend. Don t wait until the last minute and get into a bind. It seems more hills have adopted the hybrid approach so make sure to read your refresher guides on how to access the online portion of the refreshers. That must be completed along with your workbooks prior to coming to the hands on portion. The IOR for the refresher should be checking these when people register the day of their events. It is very important as well to make sure guest patrollers have their sign off sheets filled out so they can return that potion to their hill for verification. IOR s please make sure all guests as well as your patrollers are registered for your events. That will be the only way they get credit for attending. National office will not be doing and special updates for those that don t. This will save you extra work when it comes time to close out your course. Outdoor Emergency Care courses have been underway as well with one hill in our region already testing out. IOR s please make sure you have all your candidates registered for your course and your assigned IT listed on your course tab on the national site. This is how the testing materials are distributed and national will only send the number of tests for candidates registered. This is a must. Please let me know if you have questions in regards to the process or need help with registering. The senior module of the OEC program will be hosted by Alpine Valley this year and Anne is working on firming up the dates. Please read her article for dates and times. Looking for help again with the program because it takes quite a group to put this event together. Please let me know if you would like to help out with the clinic and test dates. Finally, I would like to welcome three new OEC ITs to our group. Leanna Olson Taunt, Katrina Moser, and Mike Hare have completed their mentoring process and will join us to help QA many of the events we have throughout the season. Welcome aboard and thanks for your extra time and effort. Enjoy the rest of summer all and look forward to seeing each of you this season.

Proficiency/Senior On Hill Update Timothy Weinand South Central NSP C ski school advisor It s time to turn our attention to the ski season! The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting cooler, OEC classes have started and refreshers are being planned. Planning for the Senior on hill program started at the end of last season. The on hill clinic this year will be held on January 6th and 7th at Tyrol Basin ski area with the exam on February 25th, also at Tyrol. The Senior program consists of Senior Emergency Management, Senior On Hill and three electives. For the Senior On Hill Program last season, we had an excellent turnout. We had 11 South Central members involved as candidates. Not all were completely successful but all certainly improved their skiing/riding and toboggan skills. It seems the demands on our time keep going up. The amount of time and training involved to become a ski patroller is not insignificant. The time involved to go for Senior is not insignificant either. However, if you re not working on improving your skills, your proficiency will likely decline. Yes, Senior is challenging but it s also rewarding. If you are interested, please contact Anne Blaedow, Senior Coordinator for South Central region. In addition to the Senior activities, there will be a region wide ski/snowboard enhancement seminar scheduled for January 28th, 2018, at Heiliger Huegel ski area. The goal of the SES is to improve skiing/riding in a more relaxed atmosphere than the Senior exam format. Like in the Senior program video analysis will be used if a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth ten thousand. If you have a desire for continuous improvement, come on out to an SES Senior Program is looking for Candidates! Are you in?? Anne Blaedow The senior program is all about LEARNING and GROWING as a patroller. Come to the program willing to learn, make mistakes and grow! I hope you will see that we are working hard to constantly improve our program and keep it focussed on building successful patrollers. Senior Program Informational Meeting and first OEC practice session at Meadowbrook Elementary School in Waukesha on Saturday, December 2nd (10am 3pm) 3130 Rolling Ridge Dr Waukesha. We will review the program modules, requirements, answer questions and begin to work on the skill check off list. As the Program Administrator, My role is to work with Tim Weinand (Proficiency Advisor), Jeremy McPherson (Toboggan Advisor) and David Kleinschmidt (Region OEC Admin) to produce a quality Senior Program for you all. I will be your central point of contact, but you can feel free to contact any of them with any pertinent questions. We are a team that is here to help you!! To complete the program, Candidates must earn 3 electives and pass the evaluations of the 3 on the snow modules: Skiing/Riding, Toboggan and OEC. The dates for the clinics and evaluation days are on the application form. Certified Paul S. Fuchs #569 Attention Seniors! Snowboard Enhancement Seminar Mark Harring Join us Sunday Jan 28th at Heiliger Huegel for a snowboard enhancement seminar. Learn some new things and sharpen your riding skills. Registration is 8 9 am. End around 4pm. Registration forms are in this Sweep or online at nsp southcentral.org. Contact me with any questions at mharring@charter.net Looking for a new challenge for the 2017/18 season? If so, Look at the Certified Program. The Mission Statement for the Certified Program is: Certified is a national skills development and verification program that provides a readily identifiable resource of highly motivated, skilled, and knowledgeable patrollers to better serve NSP, ski area management and the outdoor recreation community. If you are looking for a new challenge, please contact me and we can discuss your path to becoming a Certified Patroller. Call me at

ARD Programs Young Adult Patroller Randy Witt Mike Hare Hi, everyone! Camaraderie I hope your summer is wrapping up well and you are looking forward to autumn. Some things to think about while we wait for snow ski passes are on sale, new gear is on the shelves and there are chilly evenings and crisp colorful mornings. The first frost is the signal for things to come I'm looking at my skis thinking the summer storage wax needs to come off, and the early winter wax needs to be coated on and the edges sharpened. My mind keeps saying NO not yet, but refreshers are partially over and it is time. The programs are shaping up, Dani is putting plans for the women's clinic in place, Dave is planning to show us how to rescue folks when they fall into a ravine. Thom and Mike are making preparations for getting more young people involved in the patrol. Thom is ready to explain what new patrollers need to know as they begin their career with NSP. Rick has worked all summer and has made plans to bring in new instructors as well as new patroller I have a great team of dedicated folks ready to help each patrol and every patroller Take a minute to review their articles, and if you want to help, give them a call Women's Program Dani McPherson With the cooler temperatures approaching and the leaves changing, fall is well on its way. The countdown now begins to ski season, and we are hustling to plan this year s events! We are very excited to have the women s seminar at Mt. Lacrosse this year. Many, many thanks to Leanna Olson Taunt and Darcie Breidel, for helping to put this all together. Mt. Lacrosse will provide this year s women s seminar attendees with some very challenging terrain. If you haven t skied Mt. LaCrosse, be prepared to enjoy some fabulous skiing and riding with some great ladies. It will be a great hill to work on conquering steeps, controlling speed, or handling toboggans. If you want to work on your steeps skiing or riding skills, this is the year to do it! The date will be finalized soon, so stay tuned. Watch the Region FaceBook page, South Central Region Central Division NSP, for the announcement of the date. Camaraderie defined is mutual trust and friendship among people who spend a lot of time together. Earlier this month, as I began to think about this article, I remembered my last day on snow last season. Not all that long th ago, March , it was an NSP course with somewhere around 20 in attendance. It was a toboggan course so we were in the handles, on the tail rope, and we even spent some time in the moguls with the toboggans. It was a good course with plenty of feedback provided. But then, at the end, the course is over, we re all just a bit tired and most of us are looking at a long drive home someone says Who wants to ski the bumps? And off we went, we must have made 10 laps nothing but smiling and laughing with soft corn snow flying everywhere. It was a great way to end the day and my season. I m going to remember that day and those runs for quite a long time. As a member of the Nation Ski Patrol, I ve had the opportunity to meet so many outstanding people. People that share the same desire to have it be a little bit steeper and a little bit deeper. People I trust, admire, and who I call friends. And back when I started out I thought I was just getting a lift ticket so if you re a Young Adult in the NSP, I have a challenge for you. Make it more than a lift ticket find a class and take it. Not only will your skills improve but you ll also meet some of your colleagues from other ski areas, from the region, or from the division. Start developing some camaraderie of your own! If you re going to try a class, why not make it a jamboree. The North Central Region will be hosting a Young Adult Jamboree on January 27 28, 2018 at Pine Mountain Golf & Ski Resort in Iron Mountain, MI. I will be sharing updates as more details become available. As for now, Save the Date! Not long now, soon we ll be sliding on the white stuff once again. Whitetail Ridge Waiting for Snow

Instructor Development Rick Wayne I hate paperwork. This is not exactly a shocker for anyone who deals with me. (Completely random example: my Sweep column is late again hi Tim!). Ironic, then, that sometimes I have to require paperwork from my fellow patrollers. To become an NSP instructor, you re going to come up against the Instructor Application and Mentoring Completion forms (goo.gl/wnfr75 feel free to follow along). Most folks first reaction is WTF!, and I doubt they mean Wow That s Fantastic. So yeah, they re complicated looking forms. Although they actually represent a pretty simple process no, really, trust me on this! I get questions about it all the time, so here s the scoop. All NSP instruction, no matter what discipline, is built around common principles. Learning those is fundamental, so the Instructor Development class that teaches them comes first. Then you need a recommendation from well, basically anybody involved with instruction. Next comes mentoring. Here, an experienced hand helps you during some practice teaching. There s a free NSP guide for this, and it s a pretty good read. Once you ve found a mentor Mountain Travel and Rescue News Dave Zoromski Several MTR courses are being planned for the season. An MTR 1 Course will be held at Mount La Crosse November 11 and 12, The Region fee for the course is $20 plus manual and camping fees if applicable. Register on the NSP Website. The NSP course number is C Mountain Travel and Rescue 1 (MTR 1). This course provides hands on practice in wilderness navigation, mountain travel, and survival, including emergency shelters, the Incident Command System, and SAR. MTR 1 includes a mandatory (approved by your PD/PR, an Instructor/Trainer, or a Region Advisor), you sit down and chat with them about the process, your experience, and put together some kind of plan. Decades of NSP teaching experience, just adding a new discipline? Probably a pretty simple plan. Never taught before? Maybe a bit more to it. If your mentor thinks you would benefit, you and they watch an experienced instructor teach a lesson. Then it s time for you to strut your stuff for your mentor the Mentor Observation of Trainee part of the form. You teach at least two lessons in front of your mentor, with audience and material decided by them. Another confab decides if you need more mentoring, or if you re done and ready for your final exam. If so, an Instructor/Trainer evaluates you teaching a full scale lesson in front of real candidates. It shouldn t be just content presentation, but should encompass planning, logistics, presentation, evaluation, the whole shebang. (Just a an OEC Technician should be ready to treat patients as they walk out of their final, you should be technically capable of acting as Instructor of Record right after your evaluation). The I/T will confer with you and your mentor afterwards for feedback, suggestions, and hopefully approval and a flurry of signatures on your forms. The forms go up the chain to Region, and onward to National. Welcome aboard! Want to get started? Contact me about setting up an Instructor Development class. We ll put one on anywhere in the Region where we can scrape up a few interested students. overnight field session. Students must also complete two free National Incident Management System courses in the Incident Command System: IS 100.b and IS 700.a. The Mountain Travel and Rescue manual is available in paperback or PDF from the NSP website. It also has been available on Amazon in the past. Go to the FEMA website to register and take the two free courses. Register at FEMA.gov under FEMA training as Other participant. Additional information is available on the NSP website. One additional MTR 1 class is being planned for the east side of the region, likely at Nordic Mountain in February or March. Watch for specific information in the Winter Sweep. One or two Rope Rescue MTR Enhancement courses are also being planned at ski areas. Watch the South Central Region Facebook page and Region calendar for locations and dates. If your patrol would like a rope rescue course presented, please contact me at dwzoromski@wisc.edu or

Section 2 Section 4 Stephanie Lent Leanna Olson Taunt So here it is, nearly the end of summer already. It seems like just yesterday I was putting the finishing touches on my last issue's article. Don't know about the rest of you, but this summer seems to have flown by incredibly quickly. It's time to pull out the OEC refresher workbook, get your hill's refresher date on the calendar, and make sure the butt pack is stocked properly. But you know all that just maybe want to hold onto the last few days of summer, right? Still a little early to dust off the skis, but maybe you have decided to upgrade and are looking for some pro deals. Or perhaps you are planning your get into shape for ski season fitness routine. I just contacted a few of my fellow patrollers who get together annually to go over the OEC Workbook and that will be done by the time you are reading this issue. We have been doing this for many years, and I highly recommend it we get it done in an afternoon, we all get to hear different perspectives on the questions and scenarios, and we get to socialize! It feels like snow is on its way today but the calendar says, not quite yet. As we gear up for the winter, check the calendar for upcoming events. OEC refresher dates are set. If you want to go west for your OEC refresher, Mt. La Crosse will have theirs on October 15 and Whitetail Ridge/Fort McCoy is on November 11. November 11 and 12 there is a MTR1 at Mt. La Crosse. We hope to have the Women s Seminar at Mt. La Crosse also this year so I hope you will make the drive our way. I would remind you to take a look at our region's calendar at the end of this issue. There will be many opportunities to hone your skiing, toboggan and first aid skills, or learn something new this year (low angle rescue/avalanche/mountaineering anyone??). Remember that a lot of these programs have an enrollment limit, so if you are interested, save the date and get signed up. How would you like to patrol at one of the Midwest s premier ski destinations? Cascade Mountain Ski Patrol has two options for secondary patrollers. Last season we added a new option that requires only 35 hours per season. The only catch is that those 35 hours must be done during shifts in high need. Typically, those shifts are Monday Sunday day time hours, Saturday night, Sunday night, or holiday s. The benefits include a guest pass that you can use every time you are patrolling, along with a meal voucher for weekday shifts. Of course, we still have our original secondary option which requires one shift per week with full benefits. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a secondary patroller at Cascade Mountain, call or Lynn Thornton at or Lynn.Thornton@CascadeMountainSkiPatrol.com. Hope your summer was filled with good memories, and that you are coming back refreshed and ready to hit the slopes when the snow flies. Let me know how I can be of service to you. My contact information: sjlent@wisc.edu, and phone: The Board of Governors is already planning for the 2018 Central Division Patroller Conference. Do you know of a company who would like to donate services or items for our silent auction? This is a great opportunity to reach skiers/boarders who are active in other sports and activities in the off season. Just let your Section Chief know. Stay tuned for information on Senior events, ski/board classes and other events! The cold and snow will be here before you know it! Leanna Olson Taunt Would you like to try some new runs? Lynn Thornton Would you like to meet some new people? Insurance Jim Stein Region Members, Old, New, Wanna Be As I ve said before, you OId s have read what I have to say for years. New er one, only once, twice, maybe. You Wanna Be s have to ask the Old s because I am taking a different tack/track in this article. I m sure more than a few of you shop your insurance a time or two every so often. Beware, companies have matrices that include longevity with a company. They give better rates for those who stay with a company for more than a year or two or three. There are other factors you would never think about. BUT, do you ever ask about the coverage you re getting for your money? Obviously, you want to be sure what you do on the slopes is covered. What else? Each of your situations are different. Patrolling is the common thread. What else is? Think about it. Thanks, whoever you are reading this.
