1 SUMMER 2007 REGION DIRECTOR S NOTE Thom Rabaglia Hello boys, I'm baaaaaack!" Thank you to all who took the time to participate in the Region election. Although I ran unopposed, the fact that this Region remains one patroller one vote is important. Thank you to Deb Hunt for running the election. Deb has many hats and does a great job. She is our SWEEP publisher/editor, Region elections and now the new Alpine Valley PD/PR. We are welcoming a couple new members to the Region team. Tony Ortega is our new ARD and will oversee on hill proficiency. Eric Gesteland is stepping down as ARD, but I'm sure he will help out in many ways. Many thanks to Eric. Keith Rosenbaum is stepping up from his assistant role to be our Toboggan Advisor. Jason Erdmann is now our OEC advisor and reports to Jay Kristola who remains our other ARD. After many years of dedicated service Bill Hunley is stepping down as Avalanche Advisor. As of the date of this note, we have not selected Bill's replacement. Thank you Bill and I know we can count on your support in the future. Several years ago our Region Board reduced our dues from $5 to $3. This was because we had a significantly large savings account. Financial advisors say that nonprofit organizations should have about a year and a half of our operating budget in reserve. South Central Region has now reduced to that amount. Over the past two years, with transportation prices increasing, may advisors, IT's and testers have been requesting reimbursement for their travel expenses. These justifiable costs were not always requested in the past and in most cases not budgeted. Good news, the Region will not raise our dues this year. Because of similar issues the Division will be raising dues by $3. The other good news is that the National Board voted not to raise dues this year. We should all see the writing on the wall, I am sure that the National dues will increase in the coming years. Having said that, in order to provide training, review refreshers and conduct senior events the Region dues will also increase sometime in the future. Your Region staff will do our best to be fiscally responsible. Mike Husar and a team from our Region have been working hard in preparation for the 2008 Fall Division Meeting that South Central Region will be hosting in Milwaukee. If you can help with the purchasing of advertising space, if you have an in with donating merchandise for the raffle and for gifts to attendees, if you have a connection with refreshments, or if you just want to meet patrollers from all over the Central Division, please, please contact Mike. I hope all yall had a good summer and as in past years, I hope to C U at your OEC refreshers. "Hello boys, I'm back!" were the last words of Russell Casse (Randy Quaid) in the movie Independence Day. 2 Passing the torch in OEC I wanted to take this chance to introduce myself to you as the new Region OEC Advisor. Gretchen Kristola has retired from the position, and I was asked to take over for her. I have been an instructor for both OEC and toboggan for five years, and an OEC IT for three. This year will be my fourth year as Instructor of Record for a combined basic OEC class that covers four patrols. In 2006 I received the Region Outstanding OEC Instructor award. I am very excited to now take on the duties of Region OEC Advisor, and look forward to the challenge. Now, on to business! OEC instructors, are you due for recertification this year? If so, that means three things. One is that you must be observed by an IT teaching at your refresher or basic OEC class. Secondly, you must attend a continuing education class (CEIC). And last you will need to return a signed form to me indicating that you have completed both. I will that form out to everyone that I have on record as needing to recertify this year soon. There will be four total CEICs held this year, two on the west side and two on the east. Here's the information that I have as of the Sweep deadline: Thursday October 4, west side - 6:00pm at the Grumpy Troll 105 S. Second St. Mt. Horeb, WI Instructor: Thom Rabaglia (thomas.rabaglia@dot.state.wi.us) Monday October 22, west side - 6:00pm at the Black Bear Inn 320 W. Cottage Grove Rd. Cottage Grove, WI Instructor: Joe Riley (jjriley76@earthlink.net) The east side CEIC's have not been scheduled yet, but we do have our lead instructors for them, so if you'd like to attend one of their classes, contact them directly for information. One will be taught by Jay Kristola (mikbunz@charter.net), and the other will be taught by Don Whitaker (drwcp4u@aol.com) and David Long (dclong@scj.com). I will also try to send out information to anyone who will need to take a CEIC and is in a patrol on the east side as soon as I have information on them. Refreshers are coming up in the not too distant future. Are you ready for yours? Take a few minutes to look over your butt pack before you go. How's your stock of cravats and bandages? Do you have 4x4's that are turning brown with age? Is your roll of medical tape mashed into an oval with a lot of things stuck to the side of it that you aren't sure that you can identify? It might be time to restock or replace items in there, and this is a good time to do it. Also, as you're going through your refresher, look around at what everybody else has! You can pick up some great ideas for items to add to your pack from each other. I've seen paint sticks (as a splint or can use to shove cravats under patients lying in the snow), turkey basters (suction), safety pins, dog harnesses (quick traction splint hitch), and duck tape around a ski pole to name a few great ideas that I've seen personally. 2 Think snow! -Jason Erdmann Senior Emergency Management Jason Erdmann, OEC Advisor Senior Emergency Management (SEM) is one of the major required components on the path towards Senior or Senior Auxiliary status. The goal of SEM is to get patrollers to challenge themselves and to improve on/demonstrate their ability to manage scenes, demonstrate leadership, and use your OEC skills. Before we get into the details of the upcoming year's SEM, a belated congratulation is owed to Andrea Kay of Cascade, who achieved her senior status when she passed her SEM evaluation last year! The dates for the clinic and evaluation are a little different this year than they have been in the past. Over the course of the last year I have heard many patrollers who are also educators or students in their other lives talk about how much they'd like to be involved with this program, but the evaluation is always scheduled during spring break and the chance at a vacation wins out. So to try and help more people get involved, we've moved things up a bit this year. The clinic will be held on Saturday January 5, At the time of the deadline for Sweep, the location is not set, although we should have it confirmed very soon. The clinic will be run in the same format and style as the evaluation to give the candidates the full experience of what the SEM evaluation will be like. It will also provide the senior candidates with valuable feedback that will help develop their skills and prepare them for the evaluation. The evaluation will be on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at Cascade. Again, this will run the same way that the clinic is. I won't say that there will be no surprises, since we try to come up with challenging, creative, yet realistic scenarios, and try to make them look and feel as realistic as possible but you won't be surprised by the testing format at least! In order to participate in the SEM program, you must be able to attend both the clinic and the evaluation. There is an application form that will also need to be filled out prior to participation in SEM. It is important for us to receive this form from each senior candidate so that we can organize the events properly and efficiently. The form will also need to be signed by your Patrol Representative. We strive to provide a challenging program, and want to make sure that the candidate has the best opportunity for success. By signing off on your application, the Patrol Representative is indicating that the candidate has shown that they have the leadership, OEC, and scene management skills that will make them well prepared for this program. If you would like to participate in this program, please contact me by either (erdmann@wisc.edu) or phone ( ) by December 14, Then you will need to bring your completed application form to the SEM clinic on January 5. The application form can be downloaded from the Region website, under the Library section. If you are unable to download the form, please contact me and I can you a copy of it. Again, here are your important dates: December 14, deadline to notify me that you are participating January 5, SEM clinic and applications due February 16, SEM evaluation

3 Assistant Region Director Report by Tony Ortega Senior Alpine Hello there, familiar name, new job. So, how did I make the transition from Toboggan Advisor to Assistant Region Director (ARD)? During the off-season (with no snow on the ground), I got a call from Thom, and he informed me that the current Assistant Region Director (ARD), Eric Gesteland, was stepping down from his position as ARD for South Central Region, and Thom really wanted me to take the ARD position. I though it over, said yes, and here I am. So what does that mean? First of all, I really need to thank Eric for all the work he did as the ARD, especially for helping me with the Region Toboggan Advisor position that I held for the past 2 years. He has been a wonderful mentor and a great instructor. Second, I am no longer the Toboggan advisor. The new toboggan advisor is Keith Rosembaum, who was the assistant Region Toboggan Advisor last year.you may know him by his nick-name "Toboggan Boy," but this year, due to his promotion to Region Toboggan Advisor, he will be known as: (drum roll ) "Toboggan MAN!!!" Third, coming from a background of little to no region involvement, to ARD in 2 years, I would like to give some advise: SIGN UP FOR A REGION CLINIC!!! They are excellent!!! The purpose for the clinics are to help you improve your skills in just about all aspects of your patrol duties. There is a ski enhancement seminar (help with skiing skills), snowboard enhancement seminar (help with your snowboarding skills), mountain travel and rescue (winter camping and search and rescue), toboggan enhancement seminar (help with toboggan handling skills), just to name a few. Check the Sweep here for the latest list. The advisors do a wonderful job of making each clinic a beneficial and rewarding experience. Sign up information for each are posted on the region website Lastly, winter will be here before you know it, so now would be a good time to get your gear in order so that you are prepared when your hill opens. Have a good fall (autumn). Just a few more months baby! Hope to see you at next year's on-hill Senior events. Peggy, Jim & Steve Insurance Advisor- As I well know from calls we get all the time, I am sure some of you "shop" your insurance quite a bit. That may be OK in some scenarios. But, unless your agent doesn't know more than you do, you should trust in his/her efforts. It would make sense to revisit your insurance coverage with him/her. That will give him/her the occasion to make certain your insurance company is the best one for your circumstances. You can use that opportunity to find out for yourself that your Home/Renters Insurance will defend you and pay a claim should you be sued for rendering first aid on the slopes, regardless of the Good Samaritan statutorial protections. It should go without saying that your policy would cover if you bumped someone while skiing/snowboarding and they sued. Say! What about all the value in your "butt pack" or vest? That would be covered, as well as your skis/board (not for "mysterious disappearance" unless scheduled), under your home contents cover. But, it would be subject to your deductible (again, unless scheduled). Here, too, talk with your agent about this. Refresh well this fall. You never know if/when someone like me goes down with a heart attack. Jim Stein 3

7 Mountain Travel and Rescue Tim Troutt MTR Advisor The following is the MTR schedule and class description for the upcoming season. I know it seems early but the way the summer is going it will be here before you know it. Mark the courses you want to take on your calendar and sign up early. Fundamentals of Avalanche/Mountaineering - Classroom - West Side November 27, 29, Dec 4, 2007 MTR 1 and 2 - Classroom - West Side - January 5, 2008 Fundamentals of Avalanche/Mountaineering - Field - Blue Mound State Park January 12, 2008 MTR 1 Field Exercise - Blue Mound State Park February 2, 3, 2008 MTR 2 Field Exercise Copper Falls State Park - March 7, 8, 9, 2008 We will schedule Low Angle Ropes courses on an individual Patrol basis. If your Patrol is interested in this class, contact me for scheduling. We will bring the Instructors and equipment to your hill for training on your terrain. The course is 5-6 hours and is half class and half field.. The Low Angle Ropes Rescue (15-40 degrees) course is designed to teach Patrollers the basics of rope rescue, which includes the equipment that is needed, a basic understanding of mechanical advantage, on hill experience setting up and working a rescue. This would be used in an area that is too difficult to carry out a patient and they need to be brought up the hill or lowered down. Fundamentals of MTR is an entry level course that promotes a sense of confidence and comfort while traveling in a wide variety of mountain terrain and conditions. It consists of classroom and a 1 day in the field exercise. (no prerequisites) Mountain Travel and Rescue 1 (MTR 1) provides the knowledge??? Address Changes??? and skills necessary to travel, work, and assist in a Search and Rescue. It consists of 8 hours of classroom and a 1 day and 1 night field exercise. LAR is included as well as, land navigation, constructing emergency shelters, snow shelters, emergency toboggans, gourmet cooking with backpack stoves, overnight in a tent, and a night search and rescue. You will be very busy during the whole outing and this will be the second best time you will have in Ski Patrol. (no prerequisites) Mountain Travel and Rescue 2 (MTR 2) takes all of MTR 1 to the next level. As an MTR 2 student you will help teach the MTR 1 classroom and attend the 3 day, 2 night field trip. We normally head in at 10am on Friday morning. The students will, navigate themselves to the campsite, which is approx 4 miles through the wilderness using skis or snow shoes, set up camp, start the snow shelters, and a gourmet cooking contest. On Saturday we finish the snow shelters, build emergency shelters that are used later, have a land navigation exercise and have about a 5 hour search and rescue which will include LAR and land travel. This course will expand your comfort level and knowledge base of winter travel and search and rescue, not to mention the very best time you will have in Ski Patrol. (MTR 1 is a prerequisite for this course) If you are a Patroller the cost for a single course is $15.00, for two courses in the same year $ If you are NOT a Patroller the cost for a single course is $30.00 and for two it is $ To register send me an at timtroutt@hotmail.com with the courses you are interested in and your name, address, phone, , and Patrol. Mail the check to Tim Troutt 1465 Pleasant Valley Rd. West Bend WI 53095, (phone is or ), made out to South Central Region for the appropriate amount. Have a good summer and we hope to see you in a Mountaineering course. Snowboarding News Hi, I hope your summer is going well. This winter we're planning to have the snowboard enhancement seminar on January 19th. Tentative location is Alpine Valley. This is one of the simplest and quickest ways to make you a better rider. Mark your calendar now and plan to attend. Please submit any change in your address, telephone number or to NSP. If you are on the Sweep Roster, also submit them to Debbie Hunt writedsign@pensys.com The NSP keeps all the databases for the South Central Region Patrols. Mailings will now be done from the NSP. So, if you want to receive Region information, please keep the NSP updated with your current address and phone number, etc. New this year, we're thinking of trying a 'Snowboarder 101' class for novice riders, crossover skiers, or members who don't feel confident enough of their skills to take the normal enhancement seminar. This class would mimic items covered in a beginner to lower intermediate lesson in the morning. In the afternoon, basic tobogganing skills on mid level terrain would be covered. The class will likely be in mid-february at either Tyrol Basin or Devils Head. As this class is still in the concept stage, if you have any interest in this class, please drop me a short note so that we can firm up whether to have it and the logistics for conducting it. See you soon! Mark Harring??? Address Changes??? 7
