I believe that somehow Woodbury Ski Area did some kind of a snow dance and claimed to have opened in late October. Rumor? Today I saw snow from top to bottom on Okemo, which just opened on November 13 th. It s no rumor that another fabulous work weekend has been completed. 14 dedicated members gave up raking leaves and countless other tasks to prepare the house for this winter season. Runs were made to the transfer station, the house was wiped down from top to bottom, carpets cleaned, rooms organized. A hearty thanks to all. The CSC snowball took place on Nov 16 th and was a smashing success. We shared a suite with the Sterling Ski Club and a record number of MSC members attended. Our December meeting/holiday party is Dec 2 nd at the Manchester Community Baptist Church. Come and kickoff the season, pick up tickets, membership cards and enjoy a meal and a raffle during the evening. We have received the formal report back from the Vermont Fire Marshall s office regarding an inspection that was performed on Aug 29 th. Lou Gaedt is our liaison with them and the BOD is forming a going forward plan. There are a number of items that need to be addressed. More info will be shared at a later date. Good News! Gas prices continue to drop. As of 11/9, the best prices were found at the Gulf in 3.34 gal so come up early, do some holiday shopping in Vermont ( see further info on Wassail Weekend) and some early skiing. 2 PAGE 2 MANCHESTER SKI CLUB VOLUME 3, ISSUE 6 MSC Has a New Lodge Manager!! Some of you may have known that Hank decided to stay in Hawaii this ski season. As a result we have found a new lodge manager for the season Michael Waterhouse. Mike has been working at Okemo for the last three years in the accounting department and will be starting as our lodge manager before months end. He will reside year round (but not a permanent address at the lodge). He is a skier as well. Please give him a warm welcome when you see him! Also, this year the lodge reservations responsibilities will be shared by Bill Jones and Jon Orzolek. December Meeting Update Get ready for our next MSC social event! Our December Holiday Meeting/Party will take place on Monday, December 2nd at the Community Baptist Church at 585 East Center Street, Manchester, CT Membership cards, Okemo tickets and raffle tickets will be distributed at the meeting. Festivities start at 6:30 p.m. (Helpers arrive at 5:00 5:30 p.m.) Dinner 6:30 7:30 p.m. Brief Business Meeting 7:30 8:00 p.m. What to bring: A - H Entrée of beef, chicken, fish or meatballs for 8-10 I - N Salad, vegetable, potato, other starches for 8-10 O Z Desserts or hors d oeuvres for 8-10 Please bring serving utensils: there is an oven and refrigerator on premises. Contact Carol Mitchell at for offers to help. No Smoking or alcohol allowed. Committee/work task sign-up sheet will be available. Pick your favorite! Stay tuned for further details on raffles, presentations and guest speaker information. Okemo Has Opened!! Thanks to the talented snowmaking crew and teamwork, Okemo will have 12 trails open, totaling 5.3 miles of terrain that is 94.3 acres of skiable and ride-able snow! There are four routes from the summit and park features on Sapphire and Countdown. General Manager Bruce Schmidt said this is the best early season terrain Okemo has ever seen! There are currently four lifts operating. Please take notice, there is no beginner terrain

Okemo Food Drive Day 12/7/2013 When skiers and snowboarders donate at least five non-perishable food items (or 100 packs of ramen), a new child's toy, or a new clothing item, they receive a coupon for a $39 lift ticket good that day. Waldorf Winter Fair 10am-3pm 12/7/2013 at Upper Valley Waldorf School, Quechee VT. 2 dollar tickets. Join in for a magical celebration of the season for children of all ages. Purchase tickets to make beeswax candles, or explore lighted caves and forests where children can choose handmade, surprise gifts for their families. Older children can tinker a copper ornament and all ages can build a nature house or attend a free puppet show. Wassail Weekend December 13th-15th in Woodstock VT. The 30th annual running of this famous event. The term has its roots in medieval England referring to the Norse, "ves heill" meaning "to drink to the health". Ale brewed with spiced apples and sugar was the warm drink given to the singers who went door to door during the Solstice. Christmas became interwoven with celebrations during the darkest time of the year. Okemo Demo Day December 14th. Test out the latest in skis and snowboards The best part? It's free to demo*! Registration will take place from 8am-1pm on the day of the event. Snowboarders- please note that you will be required to provide your own bindings. *A credit card imprint is required for security. Mountain Dew Vertical Challenge 12/21/2013 A fun, all-day event for the entire family! From a dual giant slalom race to prizes, giveaways, and an après-ski awards party, this is a family party open to all that you won't want to miss. Race Registration opens at 8 a.m. at the Clock tower Base Lodge. The Mountain Dew Vertical Challenge Race starts at 11 a.m. Final Work Weekend Update The early November work weekend started on Friday afternoon and continued until Sunday afternoon...we had so much to do that we were not able to go on the planned hike. We had 14 people working very hard trying to accomplish all of the following tasks. Completed the painting in the dining room Installed a mirror in the men's bath room Repaired the door to the men's bath room Finished the ceiling in the kitchen Cleaned up the rec room Installed a water hammer arrest-tor to reduce the noise. Assembled and installed the dining room shutter curtains. Vacuumed all the rooms Cleaned all the windows and blinds Steam cleaned all the rugs Cleaned and washed the kitchen shelves, pots and pans and stoves Took to the dump over 3000 lbs. of wood and junk including metal and the old refrigerator. Took most of the junk out of the basement in an effort to satisfy the fire requirements. The following people worked so very hard, so when you see them please be sure to give them your thanks. Please insure that dishes and utensils are washed, dried and put away after use. If you are feeling ill do not come up and endanger the health of other members. Please be respectful of the posted quiet hours. You can have two outstanding reservations at one time. It is suggested that you book one ahead for busy holidays and or race weekends. To allow for additional revenue and solidifying confirmations/reservations for guests, please make your reservations by Tuesday of the upcoming weekend. Members who make reservations after Tuesday 8:00 PM will not be able to bump guests who confirmed their reservations by the specified date and time. Also, reservations after Tuesday are first come first served for members and guests. Please note that through the secured side of the website (where you need to log in with your ID and password) a calendar is available to show you who is staying at the lodge.
