9 Club Update Aberdeen Ski Club was formed in 1956 and for six decades has been one of the leading clubs in Scotland. In 2010 the club re-invented itself as Aberdeen Snowsports Club and embraced all forms of Snowsports. Since then the club has gone from strength to strength and is the leading club in Scotland. 10 The coming Season marks the 6oth anniversary of the Aberdeen Snowsports Club. We're proud of what our members have achieved in that time. Being Scotlands largest Snowsports club comes with a lot of responsibility. We aim to be a change agent, a disruptive element and a catalyst for growth. Our landmark year led us to spend some time examining who we are, what we do and what the clubs purpose is. This has fired us with a new sense of mission which now drives our work. We've shaken up the club structure and delegated a lot of authority to new task specific groups. These include skills development, competitions, fundraising, communications and many others. This allows groups to go much deeper and actually get more done. Our new "Mat to Mountain" philosophy guides our Freestyle, Freeride and Alpine coaching programs. It's also led to a new Resort Leader qualification to broaden the support offered to members on the mountain. It's not all about the competitions. But we are competitive and our Freestyle and Alpine team make us proud on a regular basis. We host national and local competitions and our SSBX ( Scottish Ski and Boarder cross Champs ) draws competitors from across the UK. At 60 years - We're just getting warmed up.

15 industry update Slovakian Airbag Training Scottish Athletes experience new reduced risk environment Ben Kinnear, Snowsport Scotland Park & Pipe Pathway Coach Dan Breen, Snowsport Scotland Park & Pipe Pathway Coach Harris Booth, Pre-season training in Slovakia This month, a number of Scottish Park and Pipe athletes travelled to Austria for the GB Park and Pipe autumn training camp based in Hintertux. However, an exciting bonus awaited their arrival the chance to travel to Bratislava, Slovakia, to ride on the newly opened Line36 Airbag Training facility. A concept first seen in Japan, Line36 opened up this summer offering a reduced risk training facility unlike any others in Europe. Ciaran Tucker, Jordan Rose, Lewis McWilliam, Harris Booth, Cal Sandieson, Kyle Jenkins, Chris McCormick, Jamie Trinder and Matt McCormick were all there to test it out.
16 industry update Airbags certainly are not new in Park and Pipe training. The more traditional square shape is a common sight around European resorts and in the UK, adding a very valuable training option that allows riders to practice different tricks, normally with an emphasis on flips owing to the hugely decreased risk having a soft landing ensures. What makes the Line36 facility different to the average airbag is the ability for athletes to land on a normal landing gradient, ensuring a much more realistic experience. Instead of a flat airbag landing, the whole jump is designed to emulate the angles and distances as regularly found in snowparks. The run in and take-off angles are as often found on well shaped jumps, meaning for a smooth and progressive take-off that allows the rider to set up their trick best. The airbag tabletop and landing is again very realistic and the width of the landing also makes it very safe. The 3 jumps on offer make for a progressive set up and the largest jump allows enough airtime for a large array of tricks including double-corks and larger rotations, whilst offering something for everyone with the smaller jumps too. Many of the riders were impressed with how they could not only practice take-offs but also visualise and practice landings as well. Matt McCormick explained: I was able to see the knuckle of the jump which allowed me to practice feeling how the trick would feel on snow, and time when to start preparing to land This then adds a new level of realism to reduced risk training, allowing riders to feel and experience the same air time they would on a similar snow jump, and therefore execute very precise practice. Lewis McWilliam added, I was able to practice something that I ve never tried before, many times, until it felt comfortable and ready to take to snow. There is no doubting the high level of consequence at the elite level of Park and Pipe. However, despite occasional public perception of park and pipe athletes being simply brave, these athletes work exceptionally hard to earn new tricks, building up the basics and working on all aspects of a trick before it is ultimately tried for the first time on snow. This trick preparation can take many forms and encompass on and off-snow training, with riders sometimes building up to bigger tricks over many months. Facilities such as Line36 however add another very useful tool in this process. Being able to refine many aspects of a trick in a greatly reduced risk environment undoubtedly can speed up the learning process and help a huge number of riders unlock goals a lot quicker. With a very productive 3 days spent in Bratislava the team van convoy made it s way back over to the Zillertal Valley. Even with this as a micro-scale test, it was very quickly apparent that many individual s trick learning processes had accelerated! Perhaps the most exciting aspect of this trip was the very real potential that Scotland will have a very similar facility in the not-to-distant-future. Certainly in our experience this can only bode very well for all Park and Pipe riders in the country. Harris Booth ed me after the trip and summed it up pretty well; I can t believe how basic it is, but it works so well Often simple is best.
17 Event Crew Development Courses Get Involved Register on an ECD course for FREE...
