ON THE LAST PAGE The Last Chair Event was scheduled for the last weekend of skiing as listed on the Holiday Valley website. The Festivities were scheduled for Saturday April 7, 2018 to allow all SCOLers the opportunity to recover on Sunday as some members of our club need a recover day now and then. Three lifts, Mardi Gras, Yodeler and Morning Star all opened at 8:30 am on Saturday morning, Conditions were such as one might expect... if it were mid February, not spring time in the Valley! Coverage was excellent topped by a inch or so of fresh powder. Temperature was 17 degrees, Fahrenheit not Celsius, but bits of sun were poking thru the clouds. A large number of skiers were present throughout the day, but lift lines were less than a minute so it was easy to get your daily quota of vertical, and runs, in before the 1:00 pm start of the Picnic, for, at least, the early risers. The temperature slowly rose during the day and reached a balmy 28 degrees. Those who stood closest to the grill claimed it felt more like 32 degrees. So much for spring skiing! I had hoped to get the opportunity to ski in shorts and a tee shirt but was disappointed, as were the SCOL members whom expected to see... well, spring skiers... as there were no bikini runs! A casualty of the weather. In attendance were 32 SCOLers and 15 potential future members. All of the burgers were consumed as well as all but 5 hot dogs. The leftover beer from various activities during the year disappeared as well. (EDITORS NOTE: and you are surprised by this?) There were NO children present this year, so the adults had to man the grill... full time! A big thank you to the guys that helped with the grillin. When the clouds covered the sun it was so cold that ski pants were necessary during the cook out. I was concerned that with my ski clothes now smelling like burgers, a dog would chase me across the hill on Sunday but my fears were overblown. Thank you to all that attended and thank you for bringing snacks to share. A special thank you to Peggy for not bringing a tablecloth. Thus another successful ski season comes to a close on the slopes... but plenty of fun still to come this year! (see more photos pg. 4)

3 Well it s hard to believe it s over already. I know it s been said time and again but you the membership deserves a round of applause!!! The participation throughout the season by the members of SCOL was unbelievable! Kudos to all who tackled the crud in early in December, the sub-zero temps in January, the spring-like conditions in February and the truly fabulous winter conditions we had in March AND April! Our events this season were very successful. Thanks to all who pitched in to make these functions happen. Please tell your friends how much fun you had running these events and maybe we will have more proposals for next year. Message from the President Bill Fekete Hello SCOLers!! I hope everyone had fun and I am really glad that you all are still in one piece. We still have one major event left, being the Installation Dinner. Please sign up NOW so you can come help us recognize the hard work of the members of the board. Just to recap the season for the board. We started the season with increasing membership as our goal. We dedicated some time and money to promotions and recruitment. We increased the membership from 137 to 155 which exceeded our goal of 150! Great job! We also owe our treasurer Vito Sportelli a big thanks for putting together a very workable budget which allowed the Club to pull off all the events, trips and gatherings with additional subsidies over a year ago and still come in under budget. As this season comes to a close we are already working on next year. The board would like to change things up a bit. We would like to see proposals for next year s events by the end of summer. If anyone is interested in running one of our traditional events or adding a new please get in touch with someone on the Board and they will walk you through the process of putting a proposal together. We have approximately 20 people going so far, why not join us? Airline prices vary day to day, but so far cost for those who have reserved has been just under $2600. 5 HOLIDAY VALLEY, Saturday MARCH. 24. These pictures truly tell the story of SCOLer Joe Kubis s, Skimming debut. The only waterpick needed by this Tooth Fairy was to pick his eyeglasses up from the bottom of the pond!. Guess it s true. Whenever your skis are strapped on, even if it s to skim across a pond, It s always a good time when you re with SCOLers! LET S GO BOWLIN! WNY has produced some of the best Pro Bowlers on the PBA Tour. Some are so good, they even have a Bowling Ally named after them! Or they just have made enough money in their career to buy one, LOL! Not sure which the case is for Lockport native, Brad Angelo, but let s go find out! Once again SCOLer Vito Sportelli has made plans for us to GO BOWLING! Friday, May 11, 2018 Brad Angelo Lanes 6280 S. Transit Rd, Lockport The deal is $20 gets you 2-hours of open bowling, shoes, pizza & wings, and soda, and... includes the tip! Bowling starts 7:00 p.m. Goes till 9:00 p.m. So, if we can t ski, let s bowl! The runs are much shorter, footwear is laced not buckled, and the dress is less. But the beer is still near and it s certainly clear, there will be no lift line! 6 By Rusty & Linda Fogle Trip Chairmen KELOWNA, BC, Canada, Sun. March 25 - Sun. April 1 Thanks again to all those who participated in the SCOL 2018 Big White West Trip. A site has been set up on Shutterfly, by Derrick McGaughey, to share our West Trip photos. If you have not received an invite from Derrick to do so, please let us know. And please place your photos on the site soon. Eighteen inches of dry snow in seven days. 357 inches of snow for the season. The mountain trail design was group friendly. Great grooming and tree skiing with lots of winter powder conditions. Non-stop flight from Toronto to Kelowna was the best. Linda and I always set the bar high. A big thanks to Big White for helping us take it higher. The Staff and Restaurant owners were the friendliest, nicest people to work with. New this year: Three (3) Dinners, a Welcome Reception with food, pizza when you wanted it, Private Hot Tubs on Condo Balconies, Totally Ski-in Ski-out, Ski through the Village, Snow Ghosts & the Hip Replacements. Thanks to Ullr the snow God and the horseshoe that has showed up on all of the SCOL trips this year. 6

10 The Last Chair! The Last Issue! The Last Page! My Last Article! Oh my, it s all coming to end! SATURDAY - APRIL 14, Tonawanda, NY, From the Desk of Deb Darling Outgoing SCOL Communications Officer So, as I sit in front of a blank screen one last time, thinking of what to include in this month s Newsletter, of what seems to be a winter that just keeps on going, I feel a bit sad. Now don t get all excited. I haven t changed my mind and want to keep on going as well, it s because the season has come to an end, and there s still snow on them there hills! And, it s still flippin COLD out! But all kidding aside, I really have enjoyed bringing you the events & activities of SCOL each month. Every month. Since September! At almost the very same time each month! Did I say I enjoyed that? Oops! It was my hope that each and every one of you, couldn t wait to get that e-notice your Newsletter was attached! That it took you more than a minute, or two, to read about the news & events that the volunteers had planned for us. Or take a look see at those awesome Trips you may have missed out on. Or to inspire YOU to be one of those volunteers to run an activity! And that as you read, page, after page, after electronic page, you found something that made you chuckle, or at least made you smile. I thank all who contributed info, photos and suggestions on what to include in the Newsletters. It all helped make my job a bit easier, well actually sometimes it added a bit MORE to the job, (now I m chuckling) but it always filled my blank screen with memories of a great SCOL Season. This Club is only as good as the things we do, the places we go, the slopes we ski. Oh wait, that s not true. SCOL - It s always a good time! And that is largely due to the good people who belong to this Club! I wish the new Officers & Board a successful SCOL year, well mostly I wish Paula Bowers, your new Newsletter Editor, luck, (you know I ve got your back if you need) and look forward to new and exciting stuff-to-do! And you all know, YOU can be a part of the planning of that stuff! Below is a Things-to-do list. Pick one! No matter what the activity is, if you re with SCOLers, you can bet it will be great. And I m glad to have helped made it all LOOK great too! 10
