3 February 2018 S K I P E N N SYLVA N I A ~ S K I N O R T H E A S T 3 U.S. Ski and Snowboard, Olympic Selection Update Laurenne Ross (Bend, Ore.) confirmed her Olympic spot after the final event Sunday in Cortina d Ampezzo, Italy. Jan. 21, On the final day of Olympic selection for most sports, several new spots were clinched based on objective criteria. Just 10 months after a significant knee injury, Laurenne Ross (Bend, Ore.) confirmed her Olympic spot after the final event Sunday in Cortina d Ampezzo, Italy. Ross scored a top-10 finish in Lake Louise in December that held up to put her on the team. Also qualifying in super-g were Lindsey Vonn (Vail, Colo.) and Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle- Vail, Colo.). After the final men s slalom, David Chodounsky (Crested Butte, Colo.) and Nolan Kasper (Warren, Vt.) qualified based on World Cup ranking in slalom. Kasper returned to the World Cup after nearly three years battling injuries earlier this week to earn his spot in his first World Cup back. All of the objective qualifiers from snowboarding halfpipe and slopestyle/big air plus freeski halfpipe were honored Saturday night at Mammoth Mountain during the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix. Team announcements are scheduled for this coming week and will be sequenced whenever final team sizes are known. Jan. 20, Lindsey Vonn (Vail, Colo.) earned a shot at repeating her 2010 Olympic downhill gold as she clinched an Olympic Team spot with a win in the final downhill at Cortina d'ampezzo, Italy. Jackie Wiles (Bend, Ore.) was third to make her second Olympic Team. Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, Colo.) also qualified with her two downhill podiums this season. A fourth downhill position may be added this week. In Kitzbuehel, Jared Goldberg (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Bryce Bennett (Squaw Valley, Calif.) sealed their downhill spots on the Olympic Team. Jonathan Cheever (Saugus, Mass.) claimed his Olympic spot when no other athletes were able to unseat him in selection events. Cheever scored a podium in the season opener last summer. At Mammoth Mountain, the day kicked off with the final slopestyle snowboarding contest of the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix. Hailey Langland (San Clemente, Calif.) and Julia Marino (Winchester, Mass.). Kyle Mack (West Bloomfield, Mich.) took the men's win to claim the final remaining objective criteria spot. Closing out the evening, Kelly Clark (Mt. Snow, Vt.) and Maddie Mastro (Wrightwood, Calif.) claimed halfpipe snowboarding nominations. Jan. 19, In a hotly contested Toyota U.S. Grand Prix halfpipe skiing finale, final objective spots for the Olympic Team were claimed. Brita Sigourney (Carmel, Calif.) sealed a return Olympic berth with a win. Devin Logan (W. Dover, Vt.) also sealed a return, but this time in halfpipe. Logan is still in contention for a slopestyle spot. In the men's halfpipe, Alex Ferreira (Aspen, Colo.), who narrowly missed in 2014, earned a spot finishing second. Torin Yater-Wallace (Aspen, Colo.) claimed a return spot. Defending gold medalists David Wise (Reno, Nev.) and Maddie Bowman (S. Lake Tahoe, Calif.) had already clinched spots. Additional fourth spots for men and women may be named next week. In the final men's super-g of the selection period, Tommy Biesemeyer (Lake Placid, Jonathan Cheever (Saugus, Mass.) claimed his Olympic spot N.Y.) and Andrew Weibrecht (Lake Placid, N.Y.) claimed Olympic spots based on World Cup rankings. Weibrecht has medaled in super-g the last two Olympics. Jan. 14, Olympic selection continued on Sunday, but there were no new athletes achieving objective criteria for selection. In men's slopestyle skiing Sunday in the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix at Aspen-Snowmass, Gus Kenworthy (Telluride, Colo.) took the men's win over Nick Goepper (Lawrenceburg, Ind.). It was Kenworthy's first podium of the selection period, second for Goepper. But it was not enough for either to mathematically clinch one of the three objective criteria spots. It will now come down to the final two slopestyle contests at Mammoth Mountain. Jan. 13, Shaun White (Carlsbad, Calif.) led three Americans to PyeongChang Saturday at the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix in Aspen-Snowmass with all three clinching Olympic berths. White will make his fourth Olympic team, first for Ben Ferguson (Bend, Ore.) and Jake Pates (Eagle, Colo.), who won Youth Olympic Games gold two years ago. Earlier in the day at Aspen, Maggie Voisin (Whitefish, Mont.) nailed a repeat spot in slopestyle skiing. Cross country ended its World Cup selection with a freestyle sprint in Dresden, Germany. New team qualifiers with a top 50 World Cup sprint ranking included Ida Sargent (Orleans, Vt.), Simi Hamilton (Aspen, Colo.) and Andy Newell (Shaftsbury, Vt.). Jan. 12, Teen Red Gerard (Silverthorne, Colo.) rocketed to his second Olympic qualifying win at the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix in Aspen-Snowmass Friday to claim a slopestyle snowboarding spot in PyeongChang. Olympic champions David Wise (Reno, Nev.) and Maddie Bowman (S. Lake Tahoe, Calif.) claimed their halfpipe skiing spots and will defend their Sochi titles. At the Visa Freestyle International in Deer Valley, aerials skier Kiley McKinnon (Madison, Conn.) sealed her first Olympic Team spot. Jan. 11, Jaelin Kauf (Alta, Wyo.) and Morgan Schild (Rochester, N.Y.) clinched Olympic berths with their finishes in the Visa Freestyle International World Cup moguls events in Deer Valley. With just one event remaining in the Olympic selection period, both have achieved two top three World Cup finishes and have mathematically sealed a spot. Jan. 9, Resi Stiegler (Jackson, Wyo.) clinched her spot on a third Olympic team after the final slalom of the selection period. Stiegler qualified based on her World Cup ranking behind slalom leader Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, Colo.). Dec. 31, Bryan Fletcher (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) earned a spot on his second Olympic Team with a win in nordic combined. Mike Glasder (Cary, Ill.) clinched his first Olympic berth with a ski jumping victory while Sarah Hendrickson (Park City, Utah) claimed a return trip with her women's ski jumping win. Olympic selection continues in most sports through next weekend.

5 February 2018 S K I P E N N SYLVA N I A ~ S K I N O R T H E A S T 5 In Her Captain America Suit, Lindsey Vonn Finally Ready to Attack Lindsey Vonn Ready to Attack at 100% Photo by Getty Images CORTINA D AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) The Olympic downhill is little more than a month away, and Lindsey Vonn is finally ready to start attacking at 100 percent again. Forget that unusual image of the 78-time World Cup winner skiing cautiously amid difficult weather conditions in Austria last weekend. Back on one of her favorite courses she holds a record 11 wins in Cortina Vonn is not planning to hold anything back entering a set of three speed races this weekend: downhills Friday and Saturday and then a super-g on Sunday (full broadcast schedule). This snow is perfect. This hill is perfect. I have a lot of confidence here, Vonn said Thursday after dominating downhill training for the second consecutive day. It s a place where I can definitely push myself and ski more like my 100 percent self. I don t need to be careful. I don t need to worry about the risks. I m just skiing like normal and I m back to normal. This is how I ski when I am skiing well. It s not like I m not skiing well. In both training runs, Vonn s advantage was nearly a full second an eternity in ski racing. It was a vast improvement from the ninth and 27th places that Vonn recorded in Bad Kleinkirchheim in a super-g and downhill, respectively, last weekend. Everything is good. I love racing here, and it s always fun for me to be here. It s beautiful. It s hard not to be happy, said Vonn, who is wearing a Captain America themed racing suit this weekend with a big white star on her chest. Aiming to save her best for the Feb. 21 downhill in PyeongChang, Vonn has had only one win this season a super-g in Val d Isere, France, more than a month ago. She had a difficult start to the season with two crashes in Lake Louise, Alberta, then jarred her back in St. Moritz, Switzerland. A day after her win in Val d Isere, Vonn sat out another super-g because she didn t feel comfortable with the conditions. Then she took four weeks off before returning in Bad Klein. The two training runs in Cortina have shown that Vonn is still capable of taking risks when she wants to. My whole career I ve never had a problem going to 100 percent, Vonn said. It s being smart and controlling myself that has always been a problem. I feel U.S. s Mikaela Shiffrin speeds down the course during alpine ski, women s World Cup giant slalom, in San Vigilio di Marebbe, Italy, (AP Photo/MarcoTrovati) like I ve finally learned my lesson, and I ve been taking it easy to make sure that I can make it to the Olympics. Flipping the switch is something that comes very naturally to me. But how will she cope if the conditions in PyeongChang are difficult? That s what I m working on with my equipment right now. I ve been testing some things and trying to get a setup that I m more comfortable with, Vonn said. I definitely was not comfortable and not comfortable risking anything. So I think that once I find a setup that s a little bit better for icier conditions just in case then I ll be ready for any condition in PyeongChang. With the Olympics in mind, Vonn set aside a pair of skis that she tested on icy conditions in PyeongChang last season. I feel like I need a little bit more testing, but in general I m ready for any condition, she said. With the women s technical events being held before the speed races in PyeongChang the opposite from recent Olympics, Vonn will be able to ease her way into the Games. She won t race slalom but may enter the giant slalom to get a taste of the competition before going for gold in the super-g, downhill and super combined. Three, maybe four (events), Vonn said. It just depends on how I feel. Also this weekend, overall World Cup leader Mikaela Shiffrin is entering the Cortina downhill for the first time, having finished fourth in the super-g on her first visit to Cortina last season. Showing rapid improvement, Shiffrin moved up from 13th in the opening training run to fifth Thursday. I m getting more and more comfortable, and from here on out it s just about the timing and hitting my switches in the right spot, said Shiffrin, who claimed the first downhill victory of her career in Lake Louise in November. Like Vonn, Shiffrin is using this weekend as a dry run for the Olympics. It s important to be able to learn a track really well, Shiffrin said. I haven t skied the Olympic track as well. So it s sort of the same kind of thing where I m trying to figure it out inspect it, visualize it, ski it the way that I want to. And if I can execute that then I ll feel more comfortable doing the speed at the Olympics.

9 February 2018 S K I P E N N SYLVA N I A ~ S K I N O R T H E A S T 9 Kelly Clark Qualifies for Olympics, As Does Rider Half Her Age Kelly Clark qualified for a record fifth Olympics On the night Kelly Clark qualified for a record fifth Olympics, a woman half her age made her first team. Clark, the most decorated female halfpipe rider with three Olympic medals and more than 70 career wins, notched another victory in the fourth and final qualifier Saturday night. Maddie Mastro, who was born after Clark made her X Games debut in 2000, finished third in Mammoth Mountain, Calif. They join the previously qualified Olympic favorite Chloe Kim (also born in 2000) as the three U.S. women to grab automatic berths for PyeongChang. The three automatic men s qualifiers were decided last week, headlined by Shaun White. A fourth rider is expected to be added for each gender, selected by a committee next week. The fourth man should be Chase Josey, who won Saturday night. That fourth woman will likely be Sochi Olympian Arielle Gold. If that s the case, 2006 Olympic champion Hannah Teter will miss the Olympics. As would reigning X Games champion Elena Hight, a testament to the depth of U.S. women s snowboarding. The U.S. has a shot to sweep the Olympic halfpipe podium, with the top rivals coming from China and Spain. Clark s fifth and perhaps final Olympics (most for a female snowboarder) could bookend an incredible career. In 2002, she became the youngest Olympic snowboarding champion at age 18. Next month, she can become the oldest Olympic snowboarding medalist. In between, she also took bronze in 2010 and 2014 and won 10 X Games medals, including five golds. Clark accomplished something new in this Olympic cycle returning from her first major injury. The Vermont native tore her left hamstring and hip labrum in February 2016, underrotating a 1080 in practice. After surgery, her feet were bound together for a month. The Three Automatic men s qualifiers were decided last week, headlined by Shaun White Clark found it to be the biggest obstacle of her career. It overtook her fourthplace finish at the 2006 Winter Olympics, the only time she has missed the podium at a Winter Games. She got Iris, a golden retriever puppy. Iris faithfully stayed at Clark s side for endless hours of physical therapy. In her first contest back last February, Clark won the U.S. Grand Prix at Mammoth, which is now her home mountain. It was the same day her New England Patriots won the Super Bowl with their own comeback. Mastro, a 17-year-old from Southern California, could be called the most improved U.S. female halfpipe rider in the last year. She finished seventh at X Games in 2016 and 2017, but then was third at the U.S. Open in March. This season, she placed second, fourth and third at the first three Olympic qualifiers to move into position to clinch Saturday night. U.S. Olympic Qualifying Standings Snowboard Halfpipe (through three of four events) Three riders auto qualify per gender; one possible discretionary spot 1. Shaun White 1,800* (QUALIFIED) 1.
