THE SKI LINK FALL /2013 SEASON Everyone at the Adaptive Ski Program (ASP) is excitedly gearing up for another great season of skiing and snowboarding. Rumors of an El Niño possibility are very enticing and we have already begun our snow chants, dances, and everything else we can do to bring this winter lots of snow. There are many changes on the horizon for this season and for the future of the ASP. Changes include: new staff at Sandia peak, the season calendar, the program s helmet policy, the cost of the wreaths going up, the first annual summit campaign, programming at Pajarito Mountain, the Snow Ball is moving and the expansion of the program to year round offerings. WHEW! That is a lot of NEW! There are many exciting changes taking place and they are explained in more detail in this newsletter. Please take a moment to read through it to learn about these important developments PAGE 2 New Helmet Policy PAGE 3 Satuday/Sunday Program Change PAGE 4 Training & New Sandia Assistant Coordinator PAGE 5 PRINTABLE SEASON SCHEDULE PAGE 6 Summer Programming PAGE 7 First annual Summit Campaign PAGE 8 WREATHS! WREATHS! WREATHS!
HELMETS REQUIRED All members of the Adaptive Ski Program (students, volunteers and staff) must wear a helmet during ASP skiing/snowboarding activities. PRE- SEASON MEETING FOR ALL VOLUNTEERS SANDIA PEAK Monday Nov. 5-6:30-8:30pm Good Samaritan Society (Manzano Del Sol) 5201 Roma Ave. NE SANTA FE Wednesday Nov. 7 6:00-7:30pm Santa Fe Community Foundation 501 Halona St. (off Paseo de Peralta) NEW VOLUNTEER INTRO The program has required student participants to wear a helmet d uring lessons sin the 2009/2010 season. Starting this season, all student participants, volunteer instructors and staff members of the ASP, will be required to wear a helmet when participating in any ASP ski/snowboard activity. The broadened requirement is mandated by Disabled Sports USA(DSUSA), the organization that administrates the group Commercial General Liability and Excess Liability insurance policies that the program holds through DSUSA. All chapters holding liability insurance through DSUSA are now responsible for requiring the use of helmets by all participants, volunteers and staff. Dozens of Adaptive Ski and Sport Programs across this country (with twelve in Colorado alone) are chapters of DSUSA. Under the new requirement, mandatory helmet use in the Adaptive Sports arena is becoming an industry standard. We understand that some individuals would prefer not to wear a helmet however, not wearing one will preclude you from participating in our program. If your child is not comfortable with helmet, practice h elmet use between now and the start of the season. The program has invested in helmets of all sizes if you prefer to borrow one rather than purchase your own. Thank you for your cooperation. SANDIA PEAK Monday Nov. 12-6:30-8:30pm Good Samaritan Society (Manzano del Sol) 5201 Roma Ave. NE SANTA FE Main Library - Downtown Community Room 145 Washington Ave. 2
Group skiing is the best! Changes to the Saturday / Sunday Program The Saturday and Sunday Program at Sandia Peak and Ski Santa Fe are changing from six lesson days to five lesson days. The Adaptive Ski Program along with the ski areas that we provide programming at, are committed to the safety and quality of services provided during every lesson. It is for this reason that we have historically skipped President s Weekend, as well as all other major holidays. With Spring Break for schools in New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma happening over two weeks in March, our program dates have run into Spring Break for the last few seasons. It is for this reason that the Saturday and Sunday programs at Ski Santa Fe and Sandia Peak will be held for five instead of six sessions. The ski areas historically do not offer discounted programs during these busy holiday times. Private lessons at the regular rate remain available throughout the season based on advanced reservations and availability. PRIAVATE LESSON RATES ARE AS FOLLOWS: HALF DAY Three Hours - - $100/lesson (Times are typically 10-1 or 1-3) FULL DAY Four Hours - - $125/lesson Lessons are from and 1-3 with a one hour lunch break. Lunch and child care during the one hour break are NOT provided by the Adaptive Ski Program. Private Lesson simply means that lessons are scheduled based on reservation requests as opposed to the multi- week session. Private lesson rates include, lift ticket, equipment rental and private instruction. If your schedule is flexible, we do encourage booking lesson during non- peak times. All lessons require a minimum of two weeks notice and are based on availability. To schedule private lessons, please call the main office at or visit 3

PAJARITO MOUNTAIN The Adaptive Ski Program is recruiting volunteers and students for the 2012/2013 for the program at Pajarito Mountain in Los Alamos ASP EXPANDS TO YEAR ROUND First Annual Wounded Warrior Water Sports Clinic In partnership with Adaptive Adventures, and with the help of many sponsors, donors and volunteers, the ASP held the WWWSCNM at Elephant Butte Lake from July Participants enjoyed water skiing, kayaking, paddle boarding, inner tubing, canoeing, scuba diving and a whole lot of swimming, while camping on the beach for two nights. Two seasons ago the program was asked to take over the existing program at Pajarito in Los Alamos. With several winters of bad snow and the fire that took out two chairlifts last summer, enrollment in lessons have been slow. For the 2012/2013 season, the ASP would like to grow the program at Pajarito and we need volunteers to do it. If you are interested in teaching at Pajarito, or if you are a returning volunteer and interested in training at Pajarito on January 5 th & 6 th, please contact ASP Program Director, Brett Maul, at adaptiveskibrett@gmail.com or call WHAT: The annual Snow Ball gala and auction. One of the best parties of the year! WHEN: Saturday March 9 th from 5pm 11pm WHERE: The Eldorado Hotel & Spa in Santa Fe TICKETS: $90/each three- course dinner including wine, fabulous auction offerings, dancing WHY: To celebrate the season and to support the ASP With this success of this event the program is planning to have it again next July while also adding two more lake events to the summer calendar. Planning for the summer events is in the works now and more information will be announced at the end of the ski program. Many congrats and thanks to ASP Program Director, Brett Maul for leading this effort. 6
SUMMIT CAMPAIGN 2012 The Adaptive Ski Program (ASP) has come a long way since its inception in Over the years, thousands of lessons have been given to individuals with a variety of disabilities. It has been our sincere pleasure to have the opportunity to expose these wonderful people to the benefits of snow sports in New Mexico. The ASP functions as a not- for- profit organization, and has managed to sustain itself over the years through various fund raising efforts. Like any organization, we too are faced with budget restraints and financial hurdles. The profound generosity of our donors over the years has been unwavering, and for that we thank you. With new seasons come new challenges, we would like to ensure the future success of this program by creating the 1 st Annual Summit Campaign. This campaign will be our annual financial climb to the summit (goal), and will include the assistance of a great number of us working together toward this philanthropic endeavor. As with any expedition, logistics will play an integral role in the success. We will need your help somewhere along the route to fulfill our mission. Please join and follow us on our inaugural fundraising quest for the summit. 8 HOLIDAY WREATH SALE Freshest wreaths in town arriving soon! The Adaptive Ski Program raises funds each season, in part, by selling 1800 Holiday Wreaths. The wreaths are made from noble fir and are accented with juniper berries, pinecones, and a decorative red bow. They arrive from the Pacific Northwest on November 24 th allowing for plenty of time to enjoy them. We could not possibly pull this off without our volunteers support. ONLY $25 each! These beauties make great gifts for family, friends, co- workers and holiday party hosts. We have had to raise the price of the wreaths from $20 to $25. They are still an incredible deal at this price and as always the sale of the wreaths supports the Adaptive Ski Program. Wreaths will be available for pickup in both Santa Fe and Albuquerque details below. Wreaths can be ordered by calling or ing director@adaptiveski.org.
