NEWS LETTER DECEMBER 2016 GROWING TOGETHER! Executive Director Administration The Adaptive Sports Foundation has experienced tremendous growth recently, both in the number of activities it offers as well in the number of participants. When I was appointed Executive Director, I was a firm believer in the Foundation and its mission. This conviction has only strengthened over time. In order to meet our demand, a new organizational structure was needed to further grow. As such, we recently appointed key individuals to meet the Foundation s various needs. The members of the board and I all agree that this new structure is the best way to ensure optimal growth for the Foundation. Needless to say, I will continue to serve as Executive D i r e c t o r, e n s u r i n g s o u n d m a n a g e m e n t a n d participating in philanthropic development, including relationships with our donors. I am honoured to be part of the large ASF family! Logistics & Equipment Events & Marketing
Newsletter WINTER PROGRAM Take on winter with adaptive skiing! Despite last winter s mixed weather, the 22nd season of our adaptive ski program at Owl s Head was a huge success! Our classes filled up within a week of opening registration something we ve never seen before! We also welcomed more than 50 participants and a dozen soldiers to our Injured Soldiers Sports Camp. NEW! In light of the overwhelming success of our winter program, the ASF is hoping to introduce a mobile unit for adaptive skiing. The ASF will be making two daytrips with this pilot project in 2017 to test out the concept at different ski resorts. The new Hoc2 Glide Bi-Ski turned out to be a great purchase. It s an extremely flexible and versatile bi-ski, and its adjustable seat makes it easy for students of all levels and needs to experience the thrill of hitting the slopes. This program would not be the success it is without our expert volunteers, who are trained as instructors, assistant instructors, snowmobile operators and administrative support staff. Thanks to these great folks, the ASF is able to offer such a high-quality program. Thank you! HAPPINESS SELF ESTEEM COURAGE Volunteers Needed! The Adaptive Sports Foundation wishes to acknowledge the outstanding and exceptional efforts of its volunteers. Your expertise, hard work and dedication, and above all love for the cause are what make our ASF programs possible. Thanks to you, we are able to offer so many wonderful activities to so many participants. With the huge success of ASF winter program, we are ACTIVELY LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS to help with the winter program! Please contact us at
Newsletter SUMMER PROGRAM Summer vacation with the ASF! The Adaptive Sports Foundation held its second summer water sports program at Brome Lake s Camping Domaine des Érables and at Parc du Centre-de-Plein-Air-Ronald- Beauregard located in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu. More than 180 participants and 90 volunteers took part in our 2016 summer outings, which included a number of introductory and highlevel adaptive water sports: water skiing, kayaking, canoeing, tubing and pontooning. A great time was had by all! And check this out! The ASF set a new record in adaptive water skiing this year. Eight skiers travelled a combined 2 km on the Richelieu River despite Mother Nature being in a downright foul mood.. Congratulations to everyone on such a successful event! And remember, our summer program is a great way to: -Get out and make new friends! -Give families and friends a chance to pratice an activity together! -Have some fun! -Participants often tell us it s their favourite day of the entire summer!
Newsletter ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT Our second golf tournament for the ASF was held this past September 16 at the Hermitage Golf Club in Magog. Over 60 players and volunteers took part in this wonderful day by the shores of Lake Memphremagog. We would like to applaud the exceptional participation of Soldier On. Twelve soldiers played the tournament and helped with the activities on the course. You are an inspiration to us all! The day s proceeds will go toward improving our winter program and purchasing two new sit-skis called Hocs for ski lessons. Our thanks also go out to Mrs. Barbara Cartmel, the mastermind behind this wonderful annual event, and to all of the volunteers, participants, sponsors and donors who support ASF. A unique weelchair!
Newsletter ASF, a big hit at the Ultra Bromont 2016! Thanks to our Dahü, our 45 runners and participants were able to tackle the magnificent trails of the Ultra Bromont on October 9th. The event started in the middle of the night and ended 70 km away at 5pm the following day! The Dahü is a wheelchair specially designed for mountainous terrain, and once again this year, it attracted a lot of attention. The goal behind using the Dahü is to promote team building. Team members have to communicate effectively and work together as a team while testing their physical limits. Through sheer perseverance and determination, our participants did a fantastic job of safely guiding their team to the finish line. Kudos to everyone! The funds raised during the Ultra Bromont 2016 will help us to expand the ASF s programs. Our thanks to the organizers of the Ultra Bromont, Gilles, Marc and François. You have an extremely dedicated, hard-working and caring team! It was a pleasure to be associated with your event. See you next year! -
Newsletter WELCOME TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MRS. BARBARA CARTMEL The ASF would like to welcome Mrs. Barbara Cartmel to our Board of Directors. Mrs. Cartmel owns and manages Bolton Tech Inc. and Les Entreprises SNB Energie 2010 Inc. We thank Mrs. Cartmel for her many years of dedication and involvement with the Foundation. Mrs. Cartmel never misses an event with ASF, she is a role model for us all. We are very priviledge to have you as part of the team! INJURED SOLDIERS SPORTS CAMP In order to meet Injured Soldiers specific needs, ASF has created summer and winter Sports Camps. These camps give disabled soldiers and those suffering from post-traumatic stress a chance to break out of their isolation and make important strides in their rehabilitation through outdoor sports. This summer, ASF offered two fun-filled days of water sports to more than 30 wounded soldiers and families in the idyllic setting of Grand-remous. It was also the first year that our friends from Wounded Warriors and their families took part in our two days camp at Brome Lake. Whether it s through our various camps for injured soldiers, our outings on Brome Lake or our annual golf tournament, the ASF has been able to develop close ties with the Canadian Armed Forces. For the coming year, our Executive Director, Steve Charbonneau, hopes to increase the ASF s involvement and support for injured soldiers. Several projects are currently under discussion, so stay tuned... Mr. Marty Humphrey Leaves His Mark... On July 17, Mrs. Sheila Sim organized a very special day with a silent auction in honour of her late husband, Marty Humphrey. Among the items up for grabs were several gorgeous works of art by Mr. Humphrey himself, along with other valuable items. Mr. Humphrey was heavily involved in the Adaptive Sports Foundation; he volunteered at our winter and summer program for several years and also sat on the board of directors. We want to warmly thank Mrs. Sim for her extraordinary generosity; thanks to the auction, the ASF was fortunate to receive an amount of $4,500. It s with gifts like these that the ASF can make a real difference in people s lives. Plus it s also what made Marty happy!
