Directors Notes June 2013 Let's Look Out for One Another This Month As we enter the busiest month of our riding season, I urge all of you to use a whole lot of extra caution and please look out for one another when we ride. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at our 2013 Ride for Father Fred weekend, out on the roads looking for all those damn dams across the state and, at the end of the month, having fun at the MI H.O.G. rally in Alpena. With that in mind, we need to be extra aware when we ride of all the distracted newcomers visiting our beautiful area and all the idiots who continue to insist on using their cage as a phone booth. On our 2013 World Ride Sunday group ride, I came as close to being hit head-on by a distracted driver as I ever want to get. As LRC, I was in front of the group traveling northbound on M-131 when a southbound car without explanation crossed into my lane like right now. It happened so fast, literally all I could do was lean. I felt the heat from the car as it blew by. At the very moment we met, the car swerved sharply right, just nanoseconds before contact with my saddlebag and went spinning off the highway into the gravel. As a person of faith, I immediately began to give thanks. I realize that when your number is up, it's up but let me just say, I'm exceedingly grateful to still be here with all of you. When we we're riding, there will always be things we can't control. That's the risk we accept. There are, however, lots of things that are within our control that we can change and one of them is making sure we have the knowledge to survive. In 2012, there were 129 motorcycle fatalities in Michigan. 58% of those who died were not endorsed to operate a motorcycle! That's a sad statistic we can fix. As safe riders, we have an obligation to be more pro-active and make sure that everyone we ride with and everyone we meet along the way gets legal and has the proper education needed to reduce the odds of an accident. Let's make sure we look out for one another this month... Ride safe! Trent Page 2

Welcome Home Raymond A DeBusschere, son of Stephen & Joanna DeBusschere Thank you for your Service! Raymond A DeBusschere USA, Specialist (P) INFO: Specialist (E-4) Promotable (meaning he has met the requirements for Sergeant but needs to amass points (experience and training) and will get promoted when he makes the points that are posted every month) Raymond is a Parachute Rigger assigned to the U.S. Military Parachute training school at Fort Benning, GA. Raymond packed parachutes used for training members of all services (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and other Foreign Allied Forces) at the Jump School. He was attached to 7th Special Forces Group for their rotation and is currently attached to 3rd Special Forces Group. His primary function is to prepare air drop resupply (the stuff dropped by air to operators in the field) and to prepare equipment and supplies for aerial redeployment, keeping down the number of convoys on the road protecting Soldiers and equipment. Raymond is 2/3 of the way through his first deployment and has re-enlisted to continue his Army Career. His wife Ariel, son RJ (Raymond James) and their dog Bentley are enjoying some time with daddy and making the most of the events of the season. Thank you to all those that were able to come to the airport to welcome him home and to those of you that wanted to come. With only 6-hours notice, your support really means a lot. There was quite a showing from the community to welcome him home and he was overwhelmed at the display of support. Special thanks to John and Kim Lefler for taking time out on Kim s Birthday to spread the word and participate in Ray s welcome home. Page 3

Harley Davidson Plant Tours, York, PA Like to see how your Harley Davidson motorcycle was built? Well, I always wondered. That s why Suzanne and I recently traveled to York, Pennsylvania to tour HD s Vehicle Operations Assembly Plant. Here s how we did it, and how you can to! The York, Pennsylvania plant assembles the Touring, Softail, CVO and Trike HD models. They also perform a variety of manufacturing operations--making parts like frames, fuel tanks and fenders. The factory tours let you get right on the factory floor, where you get up close and personal with the people and equipment that is used to build our favorite motorcycles. There are actually two different tours available. One is a free one hour tour that offers a limited view of the assembly line and machining areas. The tour is offered on a first come-first served basis, and no reservations are available. Suzanne and I opted for the longer Steel Toe Tour, which let us walk right through the production facility and many employee-only areas. The Steel Toe Tour cost $35, and we purchased tickets on the HD Factory Tours website in advance, securing our spot for the tour. It was the best $35 I spent on the entire trip! We spent two hours on the factory floor in a group of only 8 folks. Our tour guide was very informative. Each of us was given eye protection, an HD yellow safety vest (which we got to keep!) and safety toe covers to wear during the tour. And as if that wasn t enough, there were some pretty cool gifts from HD at the end of the tour, including a coupon to use in the well-stocked gift shop. Either tour you take, you will be amazed at how high-tech the assembly process is. We witnessed bike after bike being born, right to the point of watching each one being ridden off the assembly line. If that doesn t get you in the mood for a new bike, nothing will! Pennsylvania is also a great area to ride. York is only an hour s ride from Lancaster, the heart of Amish county. The riding itself makes the trip very memorable. So, got a long weekend and looking for a place to go? Grab a couple of Northern Chapter members and head east to York, PA! It will be a great trip! --Paul Jarboe Page 6

Stephen DeBusschere, Head Road Captain th This is the summer we are waiting for I hope that everyone is ready for the 4 of July and all their celebrations. Please place safety first and foremost as we want to Ride and have Fun!!! It is the time of year that we have out of towners Fudgies come to visit with the National Cherry Festival coming and all the fun and activities these Fudgies will be driving while distracted or confused. I know that many of us will take time to ride our Harleys and have fun as we follow our charter and the reason we got these wonderful machines. This reminder is that we need to be every more vigilant during this time of year. Father Fred weekend coming fast as well I know we all volunteer at different time and different areas again we still want to participate in the events and the fun can be had our fun. I just want to remind everyone to stay hydrated not only during the event but during this warmer season. As we ride our Harleys we need to drink water as well. Heat injuries begin with confusion and slowed reflexes so hydration is a key while we are on and off the bikes. This month will be light on scheduled rides because of the number of events that we will participate in around our varied work schedules. Please if you are planning a ride to an event and you want to share the journey with others from the chapter please get an invitation to Lorri to get out to the other members so that we can enjoy the camaraderie of our chapter members. An example would be that there will be a bunch of us taking off Wednesday evening after work details will be forthcoming in a blast. P.S. UPDATE July 3, 2013 I have seen two and heard about two other accidents on US-31 between Chums Corners and Interlochen Corners on this day. The first one I drove by was pretty wicked and you could see that other vehicles were caught in these accidents as well. Steve Page 9

Group riding can be great fun when done safely. This topic has several different facets, including planning, executing and participating in a group ride. I will address each facet separately. Planning a Group Ride: Whether you re planning a short or a long ride, there are a number of things that you, as the coordinator, should consider. Plan a ride that will address the skill level of your riders. While choosing a route with curves and hills is good, choosing a route with hairpin curves and significant uphill right-hand turns can challenge even experienced riders. Try to plan your route so that it maximizes right turns and minimizes the number of intersections you need to go through. Plan to stop every hour or so in order to give riders a chance to eat, drink, stretch their legs and use restroom facilities. Be sure to plan a gas stop every miles. Try to keep your groups small enough that they can get through intersections with minimal problems. This will require you to have enough experienced riders to help at both the front and the back of each group. Executing a Group Ride: Communication is the key. Communicate with your riders by giving them maps of the planned route, times you will be at each location, planned gas stops and your phone number. Ask your riders to arrive with a full tank of gas and an empty bladder. Instruct your group on group riding hand signals and staggered riding. For an excellent group riding instructional paper (complete with hand signals) that can be handed out to riders and/or sent to them ahead of time, see the Motorcycle Safety Foundation s Guide to Group Riding. Designate someone as the group leader. Your group leader should be the person who gives pre-ride instructions. You should also have at least one person, but preferably two, assigned at the rear of the group, often called the sweep. Those at the rear should be familiar with the route and should carry tools for minor breakdown assistance, a cell phone to call for help if needed, and Accident Scene Management (ASMI) training and supplies in the event someone needs medical assistance. The reason that having two people at the back is better than one is so one person can help while the other continues with the group or, if something more serious is happening, one person can help while the other goes for help. If you have a chase vehicle, be sure to stock it with water, medical supplies and tools. Instruct the rider of the chase vehicle to maintain a safe distance from the back of the riders. This person may need to stop for more traffic signals than the rest of the group but will come upon anyone who has pulled over needing assistance. Inform riders that if they have a medical condition, they should let the sweep know. The sweep should be prepared to record the person s name, emergency contact, bike model, license plate number and medical condition. This can be done at registration to save time at the rendezvous site. CB communication can be very helpful between the front and back of the pack. Test your communication devices before you get out on the road. New riders often want to ride in the back and maintain an excessive distance between themselves and the person in front of them. While this creates an issue with traffic wanting to cut through or into the pack, pushing the new rider to ride beyond their comfort zone is not typically a good idea either, so be patient! Make sure the sweep is behind everyone and help this person have a good and a safe experience. Participating in a Group Ride - Hand signals and staggered riding are crucial.
