2 LOCAL AREA ST IVES St Ives is known for its surf beaches and its art scene. Wander through the maze of narrow cobbled streets, independent shops and fisherman s cottages in the heart of St Ives or surf at the blue flagrated Porthmeor beach and feel the soft sand between your toes, or set off on an inspiring walk along the coastal path towards Land s End. TRAVEL INFORMATION The journey time from London Paddington is approximately 6 hours. Or the overnight riviera sleeper service operated by First Great Western which takes 9 hours. Alight at St Erth and join the scenic branch line through Lelant Saltings, Carbis Bay before finally arriving at St Ives. PETROL STATION The nearest petrol station is at St Erth Services or there is a Morrisons petrol station in Penzance, roughly seven miles from St Ives. HOSPITAL There is a small hospital located in St Ives called Edward Hain Hospital and for anything more urgent the closest hospital is in Truro, the Royal Cornwall Hospital, about 25 miles from St Ives. SUPERMARKETS The closest shop is Norway Stores located on Back Road, a two minute walk away. There are also two Co-ops in St Ives but they are on the smaller side. There is a large Tesco Carbis Bay and Asda LOCAL PUB - THE SLOOP INN One of Cornwall s oldest and most famous pubs, The Sloop Inn, is a great local pub located on the wharf. On The Beach, Watergate Bay, Newquay TR8 4AA KOTA Kota, meaning shellfish in Maori, is set in a 300 year old building, right on the harbour front of the historic village of Porthleven. Harbour Head, Porthleven, Helston, TR13 9JA NUMBER 6 Owned by Paul Ainsworth, Number 6 is a lovely Georgian townhouse restaurant with a refined Modern British menu based on local ingredients. 6 Middle St, Padstow, PL28 8AP THE TINNERS ARMS A fabulous, traditional pub in a superb setting. Often a mix of friendly regulars, visitors, families and walkers (often with a well-natured dog or two in tow) in the cosy bar or the light and airy dining room. 9 USEFUL INFORMATION Things To Do In St Ives BEACHES For a town of its size, St Ives is blessed with a great set of beaches! The four main ones are within walking distance of the town, each with its own character. Porthmeor is perhaps the best known, facing into the Atlantic and backing on to the Tate Gallery. Porthminster is the second biggest and is conveniently located next to the train and bus stations. The Harbour beach is right in the centre of town and makes a fantastic family option. Porthgwidden is tucked away around the corner from all the hustle and bustle with beach huts available. There is a dog friendly beach all year round which is situated next to Porthgwidden. It is called Bamaluz Beach. TATE ST IVES The St Ives branch of the Tate Gallery opened its doors in At the time the building was as much of a talking point as the gallery itself. Overlooking Porthmeor beach this makes a striking visual statement with its iconic circular entrance vestibule. Head to the gallery to discover its collection of contemporary art with an emphasis on the St Ives School and legendary Cornish artists such as Alfred Wallis. In 2017, Tate St Ives was renovated and named Museum of the Year in BARBARA HEPWORTH MUSEUM AND GARDEN There is little doubt Barbara Hepworth was one of St Ives most influential artists with works featured in prestigious locations around the world. She is probably best known for her geometric abstract sculptures in bronze, many of which have a hole, a concept she is credited with. The museum and gardens are where Hepworth worked from 1949 until 1975 when she was tragically killed in a fire. Her studios and gardens were opened to the public the following year with much left as it was. The gardens include many examples of her sculptures displayed alongside beautiful subtropical plants. We recommend you schedule in to join one of the daily tours. SURFING IN ST IVES Positioned where it is, jutting out into St Ives Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, St Ives is a very popular surfing destination. During the winter Porthmeor often provides some of the only surfable waves in West Cornwall with the Boiler being a highly rated and challenging wave. But surfing in St Ives doesn t end at Porthmeor, there are a few secret spots that produce great waves on the right day. In summer, everything changes and beginners can take advantage of Porthmeor s sheltered aspect to learn to surf. There are plenty of places to hire the gear and lessons are available right on the beach.

10 USEFUL INFORMATION Things To Do ST IVES BOAT TRIP TO SEAL ISLAND Seal Island is located around 3.5 miles west of St Ives and as the name suggests it is home to a colony of grey seals. Boat trips are run on a daily basis from the harbour. The trip along the coast provides great views of Porthmeor Beach and the rugged Cornish coast. On arriving at Seal Island visitors can get close to the seals and soak up the scenery. And if you re lucky, you could catch a glimpse of all the other wildlife to be spotted on this sea safari! LO KIE FISHING ADVENTURES Lo Kie Adventures is a charter fishing boat based in Penzance, Cornwall, offering a range of fishing trips. They specialise in Shark Fishing, Species Fishing and Deep Sea Wreck and Reef Fishing.
