1 President Keith Trace Club Meets Tuesdays at 6.30pm for 7pm at the Villa Noosa Hotel, Mary Street, Noosaville. President: Keith Trace Secretary: Tony Oxley/Brian Worth/Ross Carey Vice President: Ross Carey Treasurer: Jim Atkinson Bulletin #6-6th August, 2013 Presidents Report Our speaker tonight is Mick Cullen, an expert on the use of social media, who will show us how we can use the social media to promote Rotary. I hope that he will help us explore ways in which our club can more effectively publicise its activities to the local community. In accordance with our agreement with the Sunshine Coast Council and the Noosa-Tewantin Lions Club we will take responsibility for Noosa Local Legends ceremony and will also be involved with the community celebrations associated with Australia Day. We will of course be offering our customary Big Breakfast. Recently, Carl Beck was approached to help with the entertainment side of Australia Day and I am very pleased to announce that he has agreed to come on board and bring his expertise and friends along as well. We have asked for volunteers from other Rotary clubs in our cluster to help us on the day. Ernie Benn has had a meeting with the organizers of the Noosa Classic Car Show and is confident that we will provide catering for that event. Please keep Sunday 6 October free. As usual we will be hosting a dinner for Rotary Exchange Students participating in this year s Sunshine Coast Safari at the Apollonian Hotel on Tuesday 10 December. 4 Welcome to our monthly enewsletter for ShelterBox Australia. This month sees us in recruitment mode. As the new financial year begins, we are looking for new Shelterbox Ambassadors and ShelterBox Response Team members. Both are essential components of the global ShelterBox family. Our Ambassadors are the public face of ShelterBox Australia, delivering presentations, organising events and raising much-needed funds. Prospective Ambassadors should click the "Be Involved" tab on the website. ShelterBox Response Team member are charged with the responsiblity of making sure our aid gets to the most vulnerable, as soon as possible, following a disaster. You need to be able to work as part of a team, keep calm under pressure, be self-reliant, have great people skills and be availble to deploy for at least 2 weeks a year, preferably more. Visit the Academy website: for more information. Of course, SRT memebers are expected to act as Ambassadors too. Do you have the desire and time to help? This month's quote comes from Mahatma Ghandi, The future depends on what we do in the present." Thanks for your support. Mike Mike Greenslade SRT Director/Communications Officer ShelterBox Australia
5 Gerald's story Yesterday I rode my motor bike to do some charity errands to the Noosa police station. On the way home the battery collapsed in the bike and I came to a stop on a busy round a bout on the highway. I risked life and limb by pushing the 350kg bike off the round a bout. I took the battery out and sat in the scrub trying to ring Kathleen, 6 times all to no avail. Hundreds of cars flew past until an old battered ute pulled up and young migrant asked if he could help. I rather embarrassingly said I needed a new battery. He said hop in we will go and get one. When we got to the store I remembered that I had no money. The migrant said no problems. He pulled out his credit card and bought the battery for me at $ We went back and he helped me fit the battery and made sure it started before leaving his address with me and driving off. I did not know this man from a bar of soap. I learned that we are only too willing to judge people who come to our stolen country, as those who want to take and give nothing back, how wrong we are! I learned that there is still trust and good will amongst all beings of all nations which is contrary to the rubbish we see and are fed on the media. I also learned that the adage give and you will receive is true. Kind Regards Gerald Victor Now that I'm older here's what I've discovered: Kids in the back seat cause accidents. Accidents in the back seat cause kids. It's hard to make a comeback when you haven't been anywhere. The world only beats a path to your door when you're in the bathroom. If God wanted me to touch my toes, he'd have put them on my knees. When I'm finally holding all the right cards, everyone wants to play chess. It's not hard to meet expenses... they're everywhere. The only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth. These days, I spend a lot of time thinking about the hereafter...i go somewhere to get something, and then wonder what I'm "here after". Funny, I don't remember being absent-minded.
6 Recited by a Kiwi Visitor THE SUN WAS HOT ALREADY - IT WAS ONLY 8 O'CLOCK THE COCKY TOOK OFF IN HIS UTE, TO GO AND CHECK HIS STOCK. HE DROVE AROUND THE PADDOCKS CHECKING WETHERS, EWES AND LAMBS,THE FLOAT VALVES IN THE WATER TROUGHS, THE WINDMILLS ON THE DAMS HE STOPPED AND TURNED A WINDMILL ON TO FILL A WATER TANK AND SAW A EWE DOWN IN THE DAM, A FEW YARDS FROM THE BANK. TYPICAL BLOODY SHEEP," HE THOUGHT, "THEY'VE GOT NO COMMON SENSE,"THEY WON'T GO THROUGH A GATEWAY BUT THEY'LL JUMP A BLOODY FENCE." THE EWE WAS STUCK DOWN IN THE MUD, HE KNEW WITHOUT A DOUBT,SHE'D STAY THERE 'TIL SHE CARKED IT IF HE DIDN'T GET HER OUT. BUT WHEN HE REACHED THE WATER'S EDGE, THE STARTLED EWE BROKE FREE AND IN HER HASTE TO GET AWAY, BEGAN A SWIMMING SPREE. HE RECKONED ONCE HER FLEECE WAS WET, THE WEIGHT WOULD DRAG HER DOWNIF HE DIDN'T RESCUE HER, THE STUPID SOD WOULD DROWN. HER STYLE WAS UNIMPRESSIVE, HER SURVIVAL CHANCES SLIMHE SAW NO OTHER OPTION, HE WOULD HAVE TO TAKE A SWIM. HE PEELED HIS SHIRT AND SINGLET OFF, HIS TROUSERS, BOOTS AND SOCKS AND AS HE COULDN'T STAND WET CLOTHES, HE ALSO SHED HIS JOCKS. HE JUMPED INTO THE WATER AND AWAY THAT COCKY SWAMHE CAUGHT UP WITH HER, SOMEWHERE NEAR THE MIDDLE OF THE DAM HE JUMPED INTO THE WATER AND AWAY THAT COCKY SWAMHE CAUGHT UP WITH HER, SOMEWHERE NEAR THE MIDDLE OF THE DAM THE EWE WAS QUITE EVASIVE, SHE KEPT GIVING HIM THE SLIP HE TRIED TO GRAB HER SODDEN FLEECE BUT COULDN'T GET A GRIP. AT LAST HE GOT HER TO THE BANK AND STOPPED TO CATCH HIS BREATH SHE SHOWED HIM LITTLE GRATITUDE FOR SAVING HER FROM DEATH. SHE TOOK OFF LIKE A BONDI TRAM AROUND THE OTHER SIDE HE SWORE NEXT TIME HE CAUGHT THAT EWE HE'D HANG HER BLOODY HIDE. THEN ROUND AND ROUND THE DAM THEY RAN, ALTHOUGH HE FELT QUITE PUFFED HE STILL THOUGHT HE COULD RUN HER DOWN, SHE MUST BE NEARLY STUFFED. THE LOCAL STOCK REP CAME ALONG, TO PAY A CALL THAT DAY. HE KNEW THIS BLOKE WAS ON HIS OWN, HIS WIFE HAD GONE AWAY, HE DIDN'T REALLY THINK HE'D GET FRESH SCONES FOR MORNING TEA BUT NEITHER WAS HE READY FOR WHAT HE WAS SOON TO SEE. HE RUBBED HIS EYES IN DISBELIEF AT WHAT CAME INTO VIEWFOR RUNNING DOWN THE CATCHMENT CAME THIS FRANTIC-LOOKING EWE. AND ON HER HEELS IN HOT PURSUIT AND WEARING NOT A STITCH THE FARMER YELLING WILDLY "COME BACK HERE, YOU LOUSY BITCH!" THE STOCK REP DIDN'T HANG AROUND, HE TOOK OFF IN HIS CAR THE COCKY'S REPUTATION HAS BEEN DAMAGED NEAR AND FAR SO BEAR IN MIND THE WORK SAFE RULE WHEN NEXT YOU CHECK YOUR FLOCKS SPOT THE HAZARD, ASSESS THE RISK, AND ALWAYS WEAR YOUR JOCKS!
7 Oxley's on holiday Landing at Puerto Jiminez was a laugh, the local cemetery being right next to the runway! And flying back to San Jose was a bit bumpy with a strong cross wind. Made it and "notso-speedy Gonzales" drove us to our next destination. 2 years ago when we visited Tiera Del Fuego, at the very bottom of South America, we saw the start of the Pan American Highway. Since then we have travelled along parts of it - in Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and Costa Rica. Hopefully we will see the end when we are in Alaska (one day must travel along the North American part!) Three days in the mountains of Costa Rica was interesting, but being the start of the rainy season, probably not the best time to visit. We did take advantage on the first afternoon of fine weather and tried the cascading hot pools at the Hotel. Each pool slightly warmer as we ascended the hill. The top one was really quite hot. We did cancel a Volcano trek, as it had rained all night and morning, and as the company did not provide wellingtons, we didn't fancy getting muddy feet. From Arenal we transferred to Monteverde, first on a good road to the Lake, then a ferry to the other side and a rickety old Mini bus on a truly terrible road - 40 Kms took two hours. The tourist bus in front of us got stuck in the mud and had to reverse to gun it through. Great fun!!! There's an awful lot of coffee In Costa Rica which they pick by hand, which must be a nightmare as the plantations are so incredibly steep. They import Nicaraguan labour for this arduous task, as their country is much poorer. The fence posts are amazing, the farmers cut off a bit of tree, plant them in the ground and hey presto they sprout, making great scenic avenues. Only one night in Monteverde, but we packed a lot in. Firstly an amusing guided tour of a Butterfly Garden, by a young American Biology undergraduate. She explained that the large Blue Morph Butterflies lived on rotting bananas and spent the whole of their life of three weeks, permanently in a drunken state looking to mate. A bit like being at Uni, she said! We also held a giant 20 cm Triantula, a Beetle with a 10 cm horn and a huge "Owl" moth We did a night walk, tramping around in the pouring rain, thunder and lightning, with dimlylit torches looking for wildlife. The guides are really excellent and ours worked hard to find interesting things, like bugs of all types, a poisonous snake, sleeping birds, a honey bear (Kinkajou), and couple of scruffy looking Sloths, but nothing worthy of a photo. We got soaking wet, and our clothes went in the drier back at the Hotel.
