3 Page 3 ANZAC DAY AT HINDS 2017 The Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving for ANZAC Day 2017 was held at the Hinds Community Centre on Tuesday 25th April. Beginning at 10 am with the Receiving of Flags and a welcome address from Councillor Stuart Wilson this occasion saw a good number of people of all ages and from a wide range of organisations participating. It was a pleasure to have as the Service Leader Pastor Rob Davison whose family has had over many years an association with the Hinds and Lynnford districts. The New Zealand and Australian National Anthems were sung, prayers led by Pastor Rob, and Bible readings by Scout group members Amelia Chambers and Lilly Williams were followed by hymn singing. Three Hinds School pupils, Eva Kelly, Ashley Bryant and Syardhana Rajinikanth then contributed poetry readings these were followed by an interesting and sensitive address by Mr Tom Ward, of Hinds Lions, who with his son William visited Gallipoli for the ANZAC commemorations last year. The Laying of Wreaths was a time of solemnity and silence to remember the fallen whose names appear on the Rolls of Honour, this was followed by a piped Lament played by George Gray; and the playing of the Last Post and recitation of the Ode to the Fallen. Reveille, the Benediction, the Uplifting of the Flags and the departure of the people brought the Service to an end. The work of many organisations ensured the success of this ANZAC service. The Hinds school children had been busy decorating the hall walls with illustrations of soldiers and poppies along with large reproductions of newspaper pages depicting various theatres of war. We need to thank the The Hinds Community Centre committee for an excellent venue, the Hinds and Longbeach Scout and Guide Groups and their leaders who looked good in their uniform. As well, the Hinds Lions are to be congratulated on working hard to ensure an interesting and meaningful programme. Betty Wilson was the accompanist for the hymn singing while the Lions ladies and members of the Hinds Women s Institute provided in the Supper room, a bounty of tasty food to be enjoyed over a friendly chat. 4 Page 4 NEIGHBOURHOOD SUPPORT IN HINDS After local woman Judy Milne did such an awesome job of setting up Neighbourhood Support in the south-east part of the Hinds Township towards the end of 2015, sadly things appear to have ground to a halt. Judy single-handedly signed up 35 households (now 36) in Cracroft, Gray, Nugent and part of Peters Streets and Isleworth Road. Despite two people putting their hands up last year to canvass the north-east part and the west side of the township no progress has been made in extending Neighbourhood Support in Hinds. Wouldn t it be great to see all the streets and roads in the Hinds township with an active Neighbourhood Support group? Hinds could be the first town in the Ashburton District to do so! In my role with Ashburton District Neighbourhood Support I am able to help with advice and support in setting up groups, but I cannot do it all for you. Neighbourhood Support will provide resources, crime prevention information, sign-up forms, group lists, signage and refreshments for working bee s to erect Neighbourhood Support signs once groups are set up. If you know Judy Milne, talk to her about it. C mon Hinds, this is your community. I encourage you to take some ownership of it. Show you care about your community and its safety, security, wellbeing and connectedness. benefits are huge! I look forward to hearing from you. 5 Page 5 Hinds & District Women s Dinner Club We were fortunate to hold a production of Sons of a Bitch, sequel to The Bitches Box for our December gathering at the Hinds Community Centre. Country bumpkin Amelia Dunbar and city slicker Emma Newborn once again did not disappoint presenting their signature fast paced, multi-character, new show. The show featured a couple of Jack Russells, Jack and Russell, two country dogs who spend more time in the cab of the ute than chasing sheep! A new adventure a trip to town but unbeknown to them, included a visit to the vet. Their journey, townies they encounter, excruciating surgery and return to the solace of the country was superbly written and performed to the enjoyment of all ages. Many hankies and tissues were required to mop up the continuous tears of laughter. Again, we sold out of tickets and were extremely grateful to have the help and support of the Hinds Lions to run the event. If you are interested and would like to know more, please contact: Penny Thomas , Anthea Reith , Anne Fleming or Betty Wilson Dates for your diary:7 th June 2017 A BIT OF HINDS HISTORY Ashburton Guardian 21 November 1961 A splendid rain fell early on Sunday morning, and has freshened the country. On the whole, the district is looking well; the grass is abundant, and the crops give promise of good yields. The Coldstream Road Board has effected a great improvement to the road leading from the bridge to the township, by blinding (sic) it with clay. The Hinds schoolchildren have finished their bottle campaign, and have sent away forty-six cases, containing 1800 bottles. Shearing is now in full swing at the local shearing shed and on the farms. Ashburton Guardian 21 November 1961 Grain carting is now taking place, and the station yard is at times very full of teams. As usual there is a little difficulty in getting a supply of trucks, and some grain has had to be stacked in the goods shed. The local potato growers are now digging their crops, and judging from the number of full sacks in the paddocks the crop appears to be a very good one. Good progress is being made by the ballast train gang in filling up the Hinds Bridge before taking down the wooden structure.

12 Page 12 A Message from Councillor Stuart Wilson The District Council has been receiving quite a bit of publicity at the moment regarding the building and siting of a new Library and Museum. We are all of the opinion that the present buildings need replacing; it would not be economical to repair either building to bring them up to modern earthquake standards. To rebuild on which site, and to have the two facilities linked or on completely different sites is where we have a difference of opinion between Councillors at the moment. Where ever we do rebuild the cost difference between sites is very small, unless we do have separate sites which will increase the overall price. There are quite a number of policies that the Council want people to have their say on, from Elderly Persons Housing, Cemeteries Bylaw, and Extending Rating Boundaries to include areas covered by the new extended rubbish collection areas. If anyone wants to make a submission, pick up a form at the Council, or look on the Council website for the information. The condition of the Districts roads are of continuing concern, the recent spell of wet weather and heavy transport have played havoc with some of the sealed roads. We are doing our best to ensure Fulton Hogan keep up with their contract to keep our roads safe. We are meeting with NZTA during May, to put this districts case once more for funds to be allocated towards improving traffic flow through Ashburton, but we have a difficulty competing with the large urban cities such as Auckland Christchurch etc. It is a situation of just trying to keep pointing out the disruption for the travelling public getting past Ashburton especially over holiday weekends.
