4 SURFING AUSTRALIA REPORT. Surfing Australia is very excited about the progress at Surfing Tasmania over the past year, being the final year of a three year re-development of the organisation. The appointment of the first paid administrator, Shayne Clark, has proved successful and a critical step in ensuring that the organisation grows sustainably into the future. Shayne and the Surfing Tasmania Board have played an active role in networking with the Tasmanian business community to develop potential long term corporate relationships and sponsorships and sourcing project funding through a range of community organisations and Sport and Recreation Tasmania. The boardriders club system has been bolstered this year, with the successful establishment of strong, active, multi discipline clubs in all three regions of Tasmania; North West, North East and South. In rgards to the learn to surf network, North West Tasmania has been identified as a potential area in which to increase surf school operations. We are very excited to continue the Original Source Australian Boardriders Battle, including a Tasmania State Qualification event that will qualify one lucky Tasmanian Club for the national final being held on the Australia Day weekend 2015 in Cronulla. We were also excited to announce a brand new event in Tasmania for U16 and U18 Boys and Girls as part of the new national 13 event Subway Summer Surf Series. Another key junior event in the sport development pathway, the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps, continues to run in Tasmania and is the perfect event to offer junior surfers an introductory experience in a fun competitive environment. We are very excited about the growth of Surfing Tasmania in the past year and very much look forward to working with the Surfing Tasmania Board and Shayne to ensure their ongoing success as they move into a new strategic plan in Andrew Stark Chief Executive Officer Surfing Australia 4

6 EXECUTIVE OFFICERS REPORT Years of Surfing Tasmania and still growing! We owe a huge debt of thanks to the many Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers and Committee over all those years who helped keep the organization afloat, sometimes against the odds, but always with the belief and passion we still need today. Only surfers know the feeling! What a great season of surfing and activities for Surfing Tasmania! A huge thanks to all the Board, Rep. Committee, club officials, STAS members, comp. directors, coaches, judges, Surf School operators, parents and our valued sponsors; ANPHA-Be the Influence, HIF and the Tasmanian Government. I would like to thank SAUS staff and Surfing Victoria for their guidance and assistance over the year. Our 9 event State Championship Series including SUPs and Bodyboards were a terrific example of what team dedication can achieve; from Bruny Is., Marrawah, Scamander, Clifton Beach and Tasman Peninsula our popular annual events again drew strong support. A new format for Bodyboard Titles did not work as hoped but planning is in place for a combined STBC and STAS series next season. The Easter Malfunction at Falmouth was the beginning of a resurgence of stand-alone longboards events with hopes for a bigger event in /14 saw 2 national events in Tasmania; the Australian Boardrider Battle (ABB) and WAHU Surfer Groms further increasing our profile as a genuine sport around the island. 2014/15 will see another event, SUBWAY SUMMER SERIES for U/16/18s, Importantly, Surfing Tasmania now has well- structured pathways from our Surf School affiliates to our regional clubs, Development Squads, High Performance Squad and ultimately state team representation. The state Junior Teams great performances at Kiama in NSW were a huge boost for Tasmania. Knocking off South Australia for 5 th place was outstanding and a great target for Western Australia in See the Team Report for details. Our Open State Team to Coffs Harbour enjoyed a great event in a new location for the Surf Festival which offered a large range of surf options for organisers. See Open Teams report for details. President Ben Stockwin enjoyed some fun in the sun as our sole rep at the SUP Championships at beautiful Currumbin. Hopefully we can field a bigger team in Our Surf School operators enjoyed a strong season with Learn to Surf and Vegemite Surf Grom Programs. Surfing Tasmania Educational Courses were well subscribed. A Level 2 Coaches Course is a priority for early next season to create the coaching pool essential to our competitive development. The big news this year has been the wonderful growth of our 5 boardrider clubs, especially in membership numbers (313), with coaching and competition activities for all formats, some including SUPs and bodyboards. Sport and Recreation funding was allocated to clubs for coaching programs for the first time. Financially, Surfing Tasmania has major challenges ahead to retain a developing program, running a part time office and sourcing major corporate sponsorships especially with the loss of the Be the Influence national sponsorship. Come January Surfing Tasmania must find the funds from sponsors, Sport and Recreation Grants and its own sources to fund an Executive Officer for at least 2 days per week. We cannot afford to fail in this task.the future has too many opportunities ahead! Sport and Recreation again supported Surfing Tasmania granting $6000 in funding towards our state participation/coaching and club coaching activities. Shayne Clark - Executive Officer. 6

9 STATE TEAMS REPORTS STATE OPEN TEAM AUGUST 2014 Coffs Harbour, NSW. MANAGER: Shayne Clark, JUDGE: Ben Richardson. TEAM: Open Men - Luke Bugg, Kyle Cooper, Open Women - Brooke Mason, O/45s - Scott Weinreich, O/50/55s - Nigel Wallace, O/55 Longboard - Chris Fullston, O/ 65 Longboard - Roy Forbes The small but enthusiastic Tasmanian Team of 7 escaped the winter chill at home and enjoyed the warm weather and 20 degree water over the two weeks of the Surfing Australia Surf Festival around Coffs Harbour from August 1 to 18. The first week opened with the Short Board Divisions and Single fin followed into week two with Longboards, Loggers and culminating with Bodyboards. Unfortunately, Tassie did not have entrants in the Single Fin, Logers or Bodyboards sections and is an issue STAS needs to work on for 2015 Locations varied daily as a small/medium 1 to 2 metre swell provided fairly consistent beach break waves at McCauley s Beach, Emerald Beach and Arrawarra over the two weeks. Roy and Chris had solid reputations at stake and were hoping for finals berths. Roy s plans were cut short by very painful kidney stones and surgery in the lead up week. Despite this he dragged himself out to surf two rounds before running out of energy. Chris surfed strongly through to the semis and was looking strong until a lack of a final wave/score derailed his dreams. In the Open Divisions Luke had high hopes and produced some great high scoring results in early rounds only to get starved for a final score/wave in his semi. Kyle Cooper also surfed strongly in his first year in Open Mens early rounds. Brooke, also in her first Aussies, was charged for a good performance and got off to a solid start in Open Womens Division. Both Kyle and Brooke gained valuable experience and are keen to build on their efforts next year. Former National Team Rep. Scott Weinreich produced consistent solid surfing in early rounds and looked set for a finals appearance until a wave drought left him stranded in his semi. Evergreen Nigel Wallace fronted two divisions in the O/50/55s and surfed well through to the second round but was unable to progress further. Brooke, Luke, Ollie Bowe and Scott discuss tactics. Team Judge Ben Richo working on a shift. 9
