2014/2015 ANNUAL PROFILE

MICK FANNING Aspiring surfers of Australia, both recreational and competitive, have amazing opportunities thanks to incredible development programs run by Surfing NSW. Through events run by Surfing NSW I discovered my passion for competitive surfing, at first in contests for small kids and later in state titles, boardriders club teams challenges, major pro juniors and at World Qualifying Series meets. So many of my rivals came through the same system and eventually went on to qualify for the World Championship Tour. As well as providing the ultimate pathway for a career as a professional surfer, the events were great places to make friends and learn about water safety. Since I graduated through the system Surfing NSW has initiated additional development pathways helping future talent achieve their goals and introducing people at all levels to this healthy and fulfilling lifestyle. 3 X ASP World Champion Mick Fanning. 2

INTRO INTRO 2014 marks ten years that Surfing NSW has been based at Maroubra Beach, which has given Surfing NSW the stability it required and has enabled us to grow across the board in all facets of our sport. Randwick City Council - from the General Manager, Mayor, elected Councillors and all staff - have embraced Surfing NSW during this time and have been an integral part of our growth. The Surfing NSW office is currently undergoing a refurbishment courtesy of the council that will only further strengthen this amazing partnership. After six years in Port Macquarie, the Australian Surf Festival has moved north to Coffs Harbour, which produced some great waves for all disciplines of surfing and has all competitors looking forward to the 2015 event. The NRMA has joined with Surfing NSW as our major sponsor. It is great to be involved with such an iconic NSW company who share in our ideals. You will be seeing the NRMA brand across a whole raft of Surfing NSW events, educational programs and Surfers Rescue 24/7 in coming months. The Australian Junior Titles this year will be in WA and the NRMA NSW Junior Team is looking forward to the travel and sampling some of WA s best surf conditions. Surfers Rescue 24/7 shows no signs of losing its momentum. It continues to gain popularity across the board and the number of rescues we are recording is impressive. We recently had a surfer report a rescue he had done on a boat trip where his mate had broken his leg on a remote reef. Using one of the techniques he had been shown at a Surfers Rescue 24/7 course, he was able to get his mate back safely to the boat and out of harms way. The surfing landscape continues to evolve and as the peak governing body for our sport we need to be able to monitor these changes and evolve with them which would not be possible without the ongoing support of all the Surfing NSW staff and a tireless board of directors. For anyone in the non-for-profit sporting sector, the past few years since the GFC has been uncertain. Companies are reassessing their marketing and sponsorship budgets, which ultimately impacts at the coalface of amateur sporting bodies who rely heavily on these dollars for financial stability. Surfing NSW are proud to announce the National Roads and Motorists Association as our major corporate sponsor. The NRMA - who this year celebrate 90 years - are a member based organisation with a strong community focus, which mirrors Surfing NSW core business pillars. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial partnership. Our event portfolio continues to grow and this year will include a new junior series with Subway that will further enhance the pathway for our young athletes, plus the Australian Open of Surfing will be back at Manly early in 2015 and sure to please the NSW surfing public with a week-long celebration of the Australian surfing lifestyle. Our surf education programs have grown exponentially. Surfers Rescue 24/7 continues to impress across the board and to date has had over 4000 surfers complete the course. Endorsed by the likes of Kelly Slater, Mark Richards, Laird Hamilton, Layne Beachley and Barton Lynch to name a few, it s little wonder it is winning awards. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Surfing NSW staff, who I believe do an amazing job, sometimes under the most difficult circumstances and my fellow board members for their ongoing support. David Gyngell Surfing NSW Chairman CEO Nine Network Australia The Australian Boardriders Battle is about to fire up again with the national final at Cronulla on Australia Day. This is proving to be a huge boost for club surfing in Australia, which will see the winning club end up with a healthy bank balance and bragging rights as Australia s best. I look forward to the year and challenges ahead and continuing to develop and promote Australia s number one lifestyle sport. Mark Windon SURFING NSW CEO 4 5

SURF SCHOOLS STATE With more accessible beaches than anywhere else in Australia the NSW coast is the perfect place to learn to surf. From the bustling city hubs of Bondi and Manly, to the uncrowded stretches of the north and south coast, there s a surf school suitable to all skill levels. Seeing 40 accredited surf schools across the Surfing NSW coastline, participation continues to rise exponentially with increasing interest in the joy of surfing. All surfers who qualify for the NRMA NSW Junior State Titles are determined by respective Surfing NSW regional title events; which are run across all nine NSW regions Central Coast, Far North Coast, Illawarra, Mid-North Coast, Newcastle, North Coast, Northern Beaches, South Coast and Southern Beaches. The NRMA NSW Junior State Titles sees approximately 350 junior surfers from all over New South Wales take part in the annual competition, which determines the qualifiers for the Australian Junior Surfing Titles. This year, the NRMA NSW Junior State Titles took place at Port Macquarie in July and saw some of the highest caliber of junior surfing ever seen across the state

AUSSIES WORLD QUALIFICATION SERIES win at the Australian Junior Titles is regarded as a major step in a surfer s competitive A career with the list of past winners featuring some of the greatest names in world surfing including ASP Men s World Champions Joel Parkinson and Mick Fanning, fellow Gold Coasters Dean Morrison and Bede Durbidge, plus former World Champions Mark Richards, Tom Carroll and Damian Hardman. Five-time ASP Women s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore, former World Champion Chelsea Hedges, and the current World No.2 and No.3 surfers Tyler Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons are also included on the prestigious honour roll. In 2013, NSW surfers claimed three of the six divisions at the Australian Junior Titles with the Under-18 Boys (Fraser Dovell), Under-14 Boys (Caleb Tancred) and Under-14 Girls (Macy Callaghan) titles all coming back to NSW. Short of winning a world title, qualifying for the ASP World Championship Tour through the ASP Qualification Series is considered to be the benchmark of competitive surfing. Currently NSW currently has six males and four females who are competing on the ASP World Championship Tour as well as countless others who are within striking distance of qualifying for the WCT. Current ASP Qualification Series surfer Matt Banting says: Surfing NSW were responsible for providing an awesome part of my childhood. The comps I entered as a grommet paved the way for the events I m currently competing in, whether it was me gaining experience or developing a competitive strategy. I think Surfing NSW events are the perfect stepping stone for any kid aspiring to be a professional surfer

COMPETITIVE SUCCESS NSW is without doubt the most successful and dominant surfing state in Australia. Underpinned by the beauty and energy of the ocean, NSW surfers form the majority of a lifestyle enjoyed, and revered, by millions of Australians. Included in these active participants are a bulk of the Australia s professional surfing World Champions and current ASP World Championship Tour competitors. Through high performance coaching and development programs, Surfing NSW is charged with maintaining this increasingly high standard of professional, amateur and junior surfing. Recognised as the grassroots level of surfing development, Surfing NSW has over 100 of the 209 Surfing Australia affiliated boardrider clubs, registered with the organisation. Surfing NSW would like to take the opportunity to congratulate three Surfing NSW affiliated clubs who are all celebrating their 50th birthdays this year. Maroubra (MSA) Merewether Narrabeen 16

EVENTS Over the course of 2013/2014 Surfing NSW continued to roll out an a-grade event calendar covering all disciplines of surfing in a range of idyllic locations. Surfing NSW is proud to be acknowledged by all surfing stakeholders as their premier surfing event management organisation in the state. The Carve Pro Junior and Ocean and Earth Teenage Rampage made their joint debut together, when the three-day competition kicked off at Maroubra Beach in January. The dual events saw over 120 competitors participate in the elite junior events, which gave away valuable ASP Australasia Pro Junior Qualifying Series points. Snapper Rocks Surfriders Club became the toast of Australian surfing with a convincing victory in the inaugural Be the Influence Australian Boardriders Battle National Final at Cronulla. Snapper Rocks took control of the event on final day to take the title ahead of Elouera Boardriders Club, Merewether Surfboard Club and Queenscliff Boardriders Club. Local Manly surfers turned up in droves to the Australian Open of Surfing at Manly in February to cheer on local wildcards Nick Butler, Richie Lovett and Dayyan Neve as they battled through the elite Men s ASP 6-Star event. However, it was Adriano De Souza and Carissa Moore who took out the ASP 6-Star QS divisions in front of solid crowd. The HIF NSW Open State Titles and Cadet Cup kicked off with the Cadets making light work of the tricky one-foot Soldiers Beach peaks and concluded with the Open divisions dominating chunky six-to-eight foot waves at Shelly Beach bommie. In the end, the blueribbon Open divisions were won by Philippa Anderson and Jared Hickel. World-renowned big-wave surfer and waterman Laird Hamilton paid a visit to this year s Port Stephens Country Club Southern Cross SUP Festival, which kicked off in May. The four-day festival encompassed a variety of different SUP divisions which included surfing, technical sprint and marathon components and decided the NRMA NSW SUP Team who would participate in the 2014 Toyota Australian SUP Titles on the Gold Coast. Near perfect waves graced the HIF NSW Surfmasters Titles presented by Moby s Beachside Retreat and the Australian Skin Cancer Clinics NSW Longboard Titles presented by HIF at Boomerang Beach in June. Over 250 surfers competed in the two events, which crowned an array of NSW State Champions and decided the qualifiers for the Australian Surf Festival. Some of NSW s most promising bodyboarders fought for the chance to represent NSW at the 2014 Australian Surf Festival, when the second round of the NSW Bodyboard State Titles kicked off in Harrington in July. Port Macquarie was inundated by grommets in July when the 2014 NRMA NSW Junior State Titles rolled into town. The seven-day event saw nearly 350 junior surfers from all over NSW hitting the wave-rich region as they battled to secure a position in the NRMA NSW Junior Team at the 2014 Australian Junior Surfing Titles in Yallingup, Western Australia. When the event wrapped up eight new NSW Junior Champions were crowned as well as the champions of NRMA NSW Junior School Surfing Titles. Almost 400 surfers from around Australia contested the two-week Australian Surfing Festival in August in Coffs Harbour with national titles decided in the Open Surf Masters, Single Fin, Longboard and Logger divisions. This year also saw the introduction of the inaugural Wahu Australian Bodyboard Titles. Punchy four-foot waves provided the perfect blank canvas for surfers in the Maxum ASP Women s Pro Junior and NRMA Women s Surf Classic at North Cronulla. The ASP Australasia Pro Junior Qualifying Series (JQS) event made its debut last year and will once again ran concurrently with the National Roads & Motorists Association (NRMA) Women s Surf Classic and formed a two-day celebration of women in surfing was the sixth year the NRMA Women s Surf Classic has run at Cronulla. Surfing NSW has also continued to focus on junior development throughout the year completing five Wahu Surfer Groms Comps events, a Rip Curl GromSearch and a handful of brand new Subway Summer Surf Series events, which are aimed to fill a competition void which exists at a crucial point in the development of Australia s leading junior surfers. The 2015 outlook for Surfing NSW events will concentrate on two key areas, event development and event creation. Surfing NSW are looking to develop existing events to ensure strategic growth and to look for new avenues to develop concepts for new events. Surfing NSW relish the opportunity to provide all event stakeholders the chance to experience our events, while, at the same time, ensuring the competitive success of NSW and Australian surfers. 18

The Surfing NSW ISP aimed to attract large numbers of young indigenous communities to beaches throughout the state. I started competitive surfing at a young age and whether it was regional or state titles or being chosen as a member of the NSW Team for nationals, Surfing NSW were always there to support me through this journey. It was always a pleasure to connect with such an organised hard working organisation. ASP World Championship Tour competitor Sally Fitzgibbons Our principle partners, the NSW Government - Office Of sport, Sport & Recreation and The Australian Government - Department of Regional Australia, Local Government, Arts and Sport, continue to support this initiative and are aware of the benefits this program has on indigenous health and activity. With participation increasing rapidly each year, Surfing NSW is excited about the continued growth and development of participants through the program
