2 Welcome to Ocean County s 2012 Guide to Accessible Beaches. This guide includes information about the County s accessible beaches, walkways, ramps, parking and surf chair availability. It also provides detailed information about 2012 beach fees, lifeguard hours and amenities. The information is organized alphabetically by town. Municipal phone numbers are provided so you may contact the towns directly for specific information. This guide is updated each year by the County s Office for Individuals with Disabilities which is part of the Ocean County Department of Human Services. The staff provides information, referral, advocacy for persons with disabilities and their families and serves as liaison to State and nonprofit agencies that provide assistance to residents who need access to services. Additionally, the staff works closely with both the County s Office of Senior Services and the Veterans Service Bureau, so please contact the staff if you are in need of these services or resources. Handicap Access: Ramps are placed at certain beaches in middle of June. Merivale, Kentford, Jeffries, Pelham, Liberty, Essex, Berkeley, Engleside and Taylor Aves., 5th, 12th, Pearl, and Centre Sts. A toddler beach is located on the bay at Taylor Avenue, a clear spot on the inland waterway optimal for family bathing. A part-time lifeguard is on duty, and the badge requirement is enforced. Here, visitors will find a new recreation park complete with playground (which includes a handicap swing) and basketball courts. The borough has four beach wheelchairs, and there is a handicap ramp on the Centre Street oceanfront deck. Dogs, alcoholic beverages and picnics are prohibited on the beach although a small sandwich is all right. Take a break at the Pearl and 5th street public pavillions. Public Restrooms: There are restrooms near the Centre St. oceanfront deck, by the bayfront on Dock Road, in Schooner's Wharf, the Bay Village area (Taylor Ave), Pearl St. and Bay Ave.(by the tennis courts) and Nelson Ave. playground. Beach Tag Purchase Location: Entrance fee taken at entrance gate Lifeguard Hours: 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Parking: 2 large lots (3.5 miles in) and 21 smaller lots throughout the park Guarded Bathing Beach: Approximately one mile of designated ocean bathing beach is located in the central portion of the park (about 3.5 miles in). During the period from mid-june through Labor Day, this bathing beach is staffed with lifeguards who are trained in ocean lifesaving and first aid techniques. Handicap Access: Beach Access Ramps are Located at both Bathing Beach Pavilions that serve the main swimming beach. Beach Wheel Chairs that can be used on the designated recreational beach and other wheelchairs that are specially fitted for surf fishing use are available at both Bathing Beach Pavilions during the summer season. They are available at the park office during other times of the year. Accessible restrooms are provided at the Visitor Contact Station (Main Gate), Ocean Swimming Areas (the recreational beach in the middle of Island Beach), the Park Office, Parking Area A-6, and the Interpretive Center. The Fisherman's Walkway at Parking Area A-7 is a wide, well maintained boardwalk trail that allows less mobile visitors to Island Beach State Park to traverse the entire island, from ocean to bay, and see all of the habitats associated with a barrier island.
