1 Holmes Chapel CommunityNewsletter Newsletter Holmes Chapel Community Issue 8: April 2015 Issue 23: July Brought to you by Holmes Chapel Partnership Working for the whole community Fiona Bruce MP attended the consultation on the Holmes Chapel Neighbourhood Plan at Goostrey Scout Hut: Fiona Burce MP attended the public consultation on the Neighbourhood Plan for Holmes Chapel recently. Speaking after the event, Fiona Bruce said: Holmes Chapel is a vibrant local community, which over the past six years since I became the local MP, has become increasingly active and I am always impressed by the community. Therefore, I am very much looking forward to the Neighbourhood Plan. (Above) Fiona Bruce MP for Congleton Constituency at the consultation. Holmes Chapel Parish Council News: Stage 3 of the Tour of Britain cycle race is being held in Cheshire East. The race will come through Holmes Chapel on Tuesday 6 September and the new business group, J18, along with assistance from the parish council and the Partnership is hoping to make the most of the visit. Find us on Facebook Follow One of the proposed activities is a 'yarn bomb' of the village centre which will be organised by Molly Mumbles and their knitting group. They are hoping that the knitters in the village will help to decorate the street furniture and shop windows with knitting or crocheting. Please call into see Chris at Molly Mumbles or her on chris.pinion@route56.co.uk for more information.

Mother s Union Strawberry Supper : Each year St. Luke s MU holds a Strawberry Supper for the whole of Congleton Deanery to raise money for overseas funds. This year we raised money for the Big Summer Appeal. About 70 MU members bought tickets this year and were invited to do a table quiz whilst waiting for everyone to arrive. Everyone was provided with a plate of scones and cream with strawberries and as much cake as they could eat! Wine was served and afterwards cups of tea and coffee. There was a raffle, a bric-a -brac stall and a huge selection of books to buy. After the supper they were handed out Rod s Famous Quiz which Rod Pickles provides every year. This year most of the questions were quite manageable and two tables shared the prize having got 42 out of the 43 questions correct. A good night was had by all, and this time next year we will do it all over again! Many thanks to all the people who put in so much time and effort to help on the night... We made an amazing 440! Next month the evening group will be going to the theatre on Tuesday 12 th July for their last meeting of the year, and the afternoon group will be going for afternoon tea at Cobbles on Wednesday 20 th July at 2pm. If you would like to join us ring: Carole Elliott on , or Dorothy Wood on

4 Youth Facilities Working Group Skatepark Update: We are delighted to report that the Working Group has been successful with its grant application to Veolia Waste Management. We have been awarded just over 29,800, which means that the project fund currently stands at a little over 45,700 including the contributions from the Parish Council, the Community Safety Fund, the money raised by the young people (matched by the Partnership) and the Methodist Church! This means that we are in a position to make the skatepark happen! There is still a lot of work to do in terms of planning, seeking suppliers, and contracting for the work, but we are hopeful that the new facility will be up and running at the Community Centre by late Autumn (at this stage we can t be too precise on dates). Meanwhile the young people on the Working Group will be raising more funds at the Village Fair; look out for them on the Partnership stall, where there will also be a display telling you more about the project. We will keep everyone updated on progress through this Newsletter. Stuart Gammon, Chairman Picnic on the Mall and the Branch Queen s Tea Party: On Sunday the 12th June Glenda and Malcolm Coates were invited by The Royal British Legion to represent them at the Queen s Patron s Lunch on the Mall in London. Glenda reports, Though wet in the morning, it didn't spoil the day! The sun came out after lunch and it made it an even better day. The Royal Family came out, followed by the Queen & the Duke. We had a fantastic day we were given a food hamper -with other goodies in also! A week later, The Holmes Chapel Branch of The Royal British Legion held a tea party for the Queens 90th birthday, in the Garden of Glenda and Malcolm. A raffle included one of the hampers that they were given the previous week, along with a host of other prizes. A total of 160 was raised for the Poppy Appeal. Mrs Coates shared: 32 happy members attended the party it made for a snug fit in the back garden. 3
5 Queen s 90th Birthday Celebrations Street Party: All the neighbours of Coniston Drive and all the cul-de-sacs off were invited to a Street Party to celebrate our Queen's 90th Birthday on Saturday, 11th June. All the bunting was out and all the tables set but the clouds were building and building and unfortunately we were "rained off". Some families did eat their picnic under huge umbrellas as is shown in the picture. What a disappointment - but we did mark the occasion!! (Above: Party guests show their spirit is not dampened, despite the rain!) Stay alive - respect the water: As the weather heats up, you may be tempted to head out for a swim. However, cooling off in rivers, canals, ponds, quarries and lakes can have deadly consequences. Every 20 hours in the UK a life is lost to drowning and hundreds more lives are changed forever due to suffering devastating injuries through near drowning. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging people, particularly young children and teenagers, to respect the dangers of water. Lynsey McVay, Warrington Service Delivery Manager for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: We want people to enjoy swimming; however, we also want people to do it safely. Sadly, each year people die swimming in open water. Emergency services risk their own safety to rescue people who get into difficulties on our waterways. Our advice is to only ever swim outdoors as part of an organised open water swimming club. Don t let a cooling dip be the last thing you ever do. Key safety tips Don t swim anywhere other than purpose-built and supervised swimming pools, unless with an organised swimming group. Never let children (including older children) swim in unsupervised areas like quarries, canals or ponds. Never interfere with lifesaving equipment. Alcohol and swimming do not mix - stay out of the water if you have been drinking. Swimming anywhere other than at purpose built and supervised swimming pools is highly dangerous and is not recommended, unless as part of an organised club. Dangers of open water The water may look calm on the surface, but there can be strong undercurrents that could pull even a strong swimmer under the water. The water may feel warm on the surface, but just a few feet below the surface it can be icy cold. The cold water can affect stamina and strength of swimmers. Always join a club for open water swimming For anyone wishing to pursue open water swimming there are a number of clubs that offer supervised sessions. To find out more or to locate a club near to you visit: For key safety information visit our website and type in water safety.
