4 A Master Plan: The Bilbao Effect More than 300 years were to pass before Bilbao became an industrial city with the construction of the first blast furnace in 1850, signalling the arrival of the industrial revolution and shifting economic activity almost exclusively to the iron and steel industry and ship building. This lack of diversification resulted in dire consequences for Bilbao during the industrial crisis of 1975 arriving the city to a DO or DIE SITUATION. Institutions, companies, citizens and urban planners put all resources, efforts and heart to save the city. The Guggenheim Museum was the master piece and just the beginning of BILBAO s TRANSFORMATION PROJECT. The result: a new Bilbao focused on services and the cultural industry was born and stands today in the international limelight as an amazing metamorphosis and study case of URBAN DESIGN. 9 Jumping from Biscay Hanging Bridge Just 20 transfer from Bilbao city center we reach The Hanging bridge, the most remarkable monument in Biscay after the Guggenheim Museum. This unique construction declared Cultural Heritage by UNESCO - is the oldest transporter bridge in the world and offers amazing views over the estuary from 45 m high and the possibility to make your group produce a huge amount of ADRENALINE heading down towards the river. 10 Bilbao Active Rowing Challenge We have the morning hours to show guests the best of Bilbao in a nice, appealing and competitive way. Or just call it Bilbao- FUN Program. We walk with the group to the river where an instructor will give them an introduction about one of the favourite Basque sports: the so called TRAINERAS or rowing boats. Afterwards guests, divided in teams will row their boats to win a small regatta activity. The frame for this activity? The most beautiful architectural masterpieces in Bilbao. Afterwards, we leave the water to take the bikes and follow the river towards Zorrozaurre: THE NEXT URBAN PROJECT and cultural melting point, where guests will have the chance to meet local artists and musicians at their working place. 10

11 Basque Sports: Power and Natural Skills We could organise Olympic Games with our traditional sports herri kirolak : originally born in the two main historical men occupations in the Basque rural Society: the baserritarra (farmer) and arrantzalea (fisher). Stone lifting, wood chopping and weight dropping are some of them. The Basque Pelota Game Jai Alai is undoubtedly the most international of all Basque sports and the FASTEST ball game worldwide.
