1 CB NEWS VOL 2.04 More and more of us are escaping the miserable weather up north and we send our best wishes to those who can t come down to our little slice of paradise yet. We hope to see you all soon and will keep a spot on the beach for you. Welcome to volume two, issue 4 of the Coral Beach newsletter for owners and guests. BUILDING & GROUNDS The building renovation will resume after the New Year on building one and two. The complex looks great with the new banana trees bearing lots of fruit. They should be left to ripen and will be harvested when they are ready. Tanya passed along the wish from all the office staff for everyone to have a fun filled Christmas and a prosperous New Year! And we in turn want to take this opportunity to thank all the staff (office, grounds and building maintenance, security) a very Merry Christmas and a joyous 2012.

2 The webcam is back in operation, at least on some browsers! In Safari, you get the full picture but you still have to scroll through a smaller window using Firefox and Google Chrome. Apparently there are also some issues with Internet Explorer but we re definitely making great progress! Check out the picture at GOING BANANAS The many bananas on our trees should not be picked, mainly because they would be inedible and wasted. Bananas do not ripen on the tree. They must be cut down when ready (as determined by our Master Gardener, Miguel) and allowed to ripen in a dark place for several days before they can be edible. Then they willl available free to all at the front desk. NOTE: When allowed to properly ripen our Bahamian Bananas are a variety that are sweeter than those in the local stores.

3 WHAT S NEW All the Thanksgiving turkey has been eaten (at the Coral Reef, it was another sold-out meal!) and the Christmas feast featured ham as well. Stanley and Sheneka continue to delight our taste buds, producing full meals in our tiny beach kitchen. NOTICE Jim Neill wishes to advise that the drink cards available to owners (for Happy Hour prices ($3) at all times) can only be used to purchase Sands, Sands Light and rail drinks. He has been allowing owners to purchase wine but with prices increasing he can no longer continue to offer this.

4 ANNUAL POTLUCK DINNER On Christmas Eve, the Board hosted the annual Potluck Dinner in the lobby. As usual, it was very well attended and thanks to everyone who attended and brought along delicious food.

7 UPCOMING EVENTS The 44 th Annual General Meeting will be held at the Coral Beach Conference room on Saturday January 21, Owners who cannot attend can vote for the Board of Directors by proxy. Forms will be made available in the near future as well as the front desk. The highlight of the New Years events will be the return to Freeport of Steve Davies. He s coming back for a one night stand at our own Coral Reef Beach Bar. New Year s Eve locally will be a busy evening with local venues competing for the party crowd. This year, the newest place is Roosters, out at the shipyards. It is built from cargo containers and boasts a huge stage for live entertainment.

8 JUNKANOO NEWS Another upcoming event will be the annual Junkanoo Parade in downtown Freeport. This year the parade will be on January 2 nd with Junior Junkanoo on January 14 th, both starting at 6 pm. Tickets are available locally if you wish to sit in the stands to enjoy the colourful marchers, bands and floats. SALAD GREENS AVAILABLE Many of you are familiar with Tamee Ferguson, who is a property manager at Coral Beach. You may be interested to know Tamee is also a source of salad greens through her company Sweet Life. She can be reached at to place an order which will be delivered to your unit.

9 LIFE NOTICE It s with regret that we mark the passing of Frank T. Gargiulo, unit Frank died peacefully at home in New Jersey. Squirrel is survived by his wife of 57 years, Maria, his five children: Nicholas, Maria, Annette, Ralph and Frank Jr. as well as ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many others. Our condolences go out to his family and friends. GENEROUS DONATION TO CORAL BEACH Any of the owners who have been around long enough to remember Jerry & Vivian Illerbrun will remember the delicious roast beef and steak barbeques they and their crew put on for us down by the pool. Jerry & Vivian have moved on and now reside in Texas but they had raised some money which they left at Coral Beach to be used for a project to benefit the owners. You will see the new benches around the Shuffleboard Court which will be well used by players and spectators as the teams battle it out in friendly competition. 10 DEPARTING FRIENDS After many years at Coral Beach, Jacques and Yolanda Delorme have decided to relocate to Fort Lauderdale. We ll miss them a lot, and want to take this opportunity to thank both Jacques, whose volunteer work here included years on the Board, and Yolanda, who contributed her decorating skills to several of our elevator lobbies. So of course we had a party to celebrate Jacques birthday and to wish them well in their new life on the mainland. AROUND CB The U.S. Center for Disease Control reports an outbreak of dengue fever in The Bahamas, with over 1,000 cases reported by August 9. According to the CDC, Travelers can reduce their risk of infection with dengue by protecting themselves from mosquito bites. The mosquitoes that spread dengue bite mostly at dusk and dawn but may bite at any time during the day, especially indoors, in shady areas, or when the weather is cloudy.

11 Symptoms of dengue include: fever headache pain behind the eyes joint and muscle pain rash nausea/vomiting mild bleeding, such as nose or gum bleeding or easy bruising Usually dengue is a mild illness, but it can lead to severe dengue, which can be fatal if not treated. Although dengue fever is not something you can be immunized against, it is recommended that you ensure your vaccinations are up to date. You should see your health-care provider at least 4-6 weeks before your trip to allow the vaccines to take effect ( MAILBAG We are looking forward to hearing from you!
