1 Chapter 12 (Equipment and Trophies): Page 1 of 6 CHAPTER 12 EQUIPMENT AND TROPHIES 1. Floating trophies 1.1. Photos Middle Barnetson trophy. Awarded to the most improved swimmer. Colin Cable trophy. Awarded to the swimmer at nationals who is 60 years and over, swam 6 events, and scored the most points, with the events being scored on a scale of endurance. Joe Hillstrom trophy. Awarded to the club with the most new members attending nationals for the first time. Best performance male. Awarded to the male swimmer closest to a world record (%) Best performance female. Awarded to the female swimmer closest to a world record (%) Middle Victor ludorum award. Awarded to the male swimmer scoring the most points for a Club. If more than one swimmer qualifies, then that swimmer closest to a world record receives the award. Victrix ludorum award. As above but to a female swimmer Peter Pirow award Awarded to the swimmer with the best 400m IM result.

Awarded to the region/club promoting the spirit of masters swimming. Dr. Heyman Belfort memorial shield. Awarded to the winning region. SAMS trophy. Awarded to the winning club. Charles Buck memorial trophy. Awarded to the person(s) who best epitomizes the true spirit of masters swimming. Lilian Parrington trophy. Awarded to the oldest swimmer A register containing a record of trophy recipients has been initiated by Carola. The register should be updated by each successive SAMS hosting region. Thus while taking into account the wishes of trophy donors the guidelines for awarding trophies remain SAMS prerogative Guidelines for awarding trophies should take into account the relative complexity of determining trophy winners with due consideration to the rule in in which foreign swimmers are excluded from point scoring. It follows that foreign swimmers and clubs should not be eligible for winning SAMS floating trophies since many of the latter are based on points scored While SAMS constitution (see 3-6.4) indicates that SAMS should insure the trophies, the cost for this has been given as being in the region of R1000pa. Given that the floating trophies are normally dispersed in a number of different homes, the likelihood of losing a number of trophies simultaneously is small. As a consequence, any loss due to theft or damage will be covered by SAMS if this cannot be recovered from the recipient. 2. Ten and twenty year attendance awards 2.1. SAMS will provide 10 and 20 year awards for presentation at nationals (see ). The awards shall be in the form of a wooden trophy or other appropriate commemorative offering and with an inscription which includes the SAMS logo and the wording Ten Year or Twenty Year as applicable. 3. Colours awards 3.1. SAMS will provide badges, either metal or cloth, for first time colours winners. Those earning colours more than once will receive a metal scroll for each subsequent achievement. Presentations will be made at nationals during the dinner/dance banquet. 4. Honorary life membership award 4.1. As per , SAMS is entitled to award honorary life membership to an individual in order to recognize meritorious service to SAMS The above would normally embrace the recipient being presented with a commemorative award such as a plaque with suitable engraving together with enjoying lifelong, free SAMS membership. 5. SAMS banner and club flags 5.1. Club flags were purchased, on behalf of clubs who requested them, by Allen SAMS ensures that the banner and the club flags are displayed at each nationals 6. Computer and software 6.1. SAMS purchased, in May 2005, a PC notebook, software and printer for use by SAMS secretary. The total cost amounted to just over R10,000. The PC has since been scrapped. 7. President s Baton 7.1. The President s baton is a new award first presented in March 2013 at the Awards Banquet in Port Elizabeth. The baton is handed over by the outgoing SAMS President to the incoming President. The handing over ceremony is an opportunity for members to express their appreciation to both committees for the hard work done and to be done by the

4 Chapter 12 (Equipment and Trophies): Page 4 of 6 old and new committees respectively The baton is an attractive ornamental piece suitable for mounting engraving plates of past and future presidents.. 8. Short course trophy 8.1. Guateng SAMS introduced, in 2007, a trophy for the winning club of the SC champs. The winner being calculated from a formula which takes into account per club the number of participants, points/event/participant and the number of registered members as at 30 September. The trophy was only awarded once (to East Coast) and then forgotten about Subsequent to above the trophy is now awarded to the SC winning club based entirely on total points scored regardless of club size. Pont scoring is the same as that for the LC champs. 9. Open water swim trophy 9.1. A magnificent trophy for the winning club in the SAMS open water swim champs was donated by Anton. Two events are swum - a 1km and 3km. Point scoring for the 1Km event is the same as that for LC nationals. Points for the 3km event which is the standard event at World Masters champs, is double that of the 1km As the event is swum on the Sunday after the pool events, the trophy is only awarded to the winning club at the subsequent Nationals. The trophy was awarded for the first time at the 2014 Bloemfontein Nationals (for the open water event at the Marina, Jefferies Bay held in 2013). Coelacanths was the winning club for the PE, Bloemfontein, and Johannesburg nationals. 10. Projector and screen In 2014 SAMS purchased an Acer projector and screen for use during meetings and the AGM. The man of action may be content with a system that works.
