1 PINZGAUER & PINZ²YL GENOOTSKAP/SOCIETY Nuusbrief / Newsletter Volume 17 / Issue 17 Augustus / August 2016 OPPERSTE KAMPIOEN - JAKARANDA SKOU 2016 Pinzgauer koei Kerry Lee van die Grootboom Pinzgauer, is tydens die Jakaranda Interras Kampioenskappe eerstens gekroon as die Senior Vroulike Kampioen, Goue Beker Vroulike Kampioen en wen toe die Opperste Kampioen waar sy teen n Brahman Bul gestaan het. Hierdie toekenning beteken dat sy nie net die beste vroulike dier by die skou was nie, maar bo die manlike diere ook uitgestyg het. Wat n prestasie vir Vroue-maand! Kerry Lee het ook deelgeneem aan die groepklasse, Beste saamgestelde groep van 4 kampioene, 2 manlik en 2 vroulik, waar ons n 1ste plek verower het. Sy was ook deel van die saamgestelde groep van 10, waar ons ook n 1ste plek verower het. Die groepklasse was werklik n belewenis. Dit is n voorreg om soveel pragtige Pinzgauers gelyktydig in die ring te sien. Dit toon die kwaliteit en diepte van die ras. Kerry Lee het ook goed gevaar by Nampo Sy het die beste paar saam met Mr. Zorro van die Cappuccino Pinzgauer, gewen. Sy was ook aangewys as die NAMPO 2016 Vroulike Reserwe Kampioen. By die Royal Skou 2016, was Kerry Lee as die Vroulike Ras Kampioen aangewys. Zorro en Kerry Lee het 'n kalf genaamd Cobus en ons sien uit wat die toekoms inhou vir ons Kampioene se kalf. Kerry Lee het goeie moederseienskappe en is n voorbeeld van n Pinzgauer koei wat ons in ons kuddes wil hê, sy vertoon goeie kapasiteit, vroulikheid en goed ontwikkelde uier. Voorwaar n Pinzgauer om op trots te wees. Baie geluk Kerry Lee!

2 VISITORS / BESOEKERS On the 16 th August 2016 we had an educational visit from the University of Limpopo 4 th year Animal Production students, we always have time to teach and inspire the future farmers and we hope what they have learned will be useful to their studies and livelihoods. We wish them all the best in their final exams. On the 19 th August 2016 Grade 10 Agricultural Sciences learners from Vuxeni Senior Secondary School in Phalaborwa, Limpopo came to see our farming operations. As young as they are they had sound and interesting questions to ask and that impressed us, we see future Pinzgauer and PinZ²yl breeders. Thank you for your visit. On the 20 th August we had Dichechele Sebone from Mabjana Pinzgauer Stud; our breeder who stays in Ghana but always finds time to visit his herd, with him is his father in law. They are happy to see the weaner heifers and how their cattle are in good condition even amidst winter and the continuing drought. Dit is met groot trots dat die Pinzgauer en PinZ²yl Beestelersgenootskap sowel as ZZ2, die Jakaranda Jeugskou 2016 geborg het. - To all our breeders at the Jacaranda Show a very big thank you for the support! 3 JAKARANDA SHOW 2016 On the 15 th of June 2016 the council declared that this year, at the Jacaranda show, we must exhibit 150 head of cattle from different Pinzgauer and PinZ²yl breeders across South Africa; after hearing that declaration we had to hit the ground running, unlike other shows the Jacaranda Show classes are 3 month gaps, meaning 6-9; 9-12 and etc. That also put us on a hustle since we had to go search all those cattle and make sure they are distributed well in the different classes, this includes a more intensive selection as we must show cream de la cream of our breeds. After the selection we had to bring in costs involved in our selected number of cattle and also the feasibility thereof, then we had to do an opportunity cost, choosing only of what we need. Show preparations come with a lot of excitements and also strains. Training an animal from scratch involves a lot of sweat and patience, preparations of the selected animals to the halter so that they can walk calmly and confidently in the show ring. New halters, New nose rings, litres of shampoo, uniforms and servicing of the trucks; that is among others the hustles we go through before the show. According to Prof. Frikkie Neser University of Free State (UOFS) he states the economic and production environment under which beef farmers are supposed to produce are getting more and more difficult every day. The rise in production costs exceeds the rise in income, therefore breeders have to make alternative marketing strategies for their stud, and this is why we strongly believe every breeder must show their cattle as part of the bigger puzzle of stud marketing. Shows present a separate channel of marketing which can expose your stud to export markets where even higher prices are realized. With shows stud breeders can further increase their knowledge of quality animals and network with other breeders. As we were about to go to the Show we set standards and targets for the show. At the Jacaranda show we made a target of winning The Performance test awards with any of our two bulls Grootboom Schuster or Mathomo Two Hundred, we set targets of winning the Gold cup at the Interbreed; the best stall on show and the most important target we had was that of having more breeders in attendance. Driving from Mooketsi to Pretoria we couldn t wait to get there but then it was sad to see how drought has severely affected farmers and how the veld has deteriorated. We hope that with time the good Lord shall make it rain. We had our three pillars that were specialising and decorating the stalls, Tannie Sue, Sonja and Marlize, their impact was of great magnitude, they decorated all the stalls with passion, sophistication and creativity. We didn t spend a cent on the

4 decoration materials, thanks to their creative art. The stalls looked so beautiful and attractive; in fact, almost everyone wanted to take a picture of our stalls. During the show it was important for us to keep our stalls neat and clean, banners for each stud present with their contact details as well as promotional materials like business cards, flyers, caps and shirts. Every morning we had to wake up at around 4am to wash our cattle and clean the stalls. We are early birds to prevent portraying a bad image of our breed, meaning if we start late people will start coming in before we tidy up everything and we always uphold a principle of neatness and we pride ourselves with that. As breeders started coming in and seeing how well prepared their cattle stalls are; they couldn t stop being so thankful. We had breeders coming as far as Kwa-Zulu Natal and breeders as near as Pretoria. Washing all the cattle in the morning, preparing the stalls and the Show ground, at 8am we were all ready with all our men wearing clean ironed uniforms as usual looking like gentlemen. We first started with the Pinzgauers in the morning and we even did the exciting group classes. In the afternoon it was the National Show for the PinZ²yls and it was also exciting. Our shows always attract more spectators which is good for our society in general. In the evening we held a price giving ceremony accompanied by a well done spit braai,

5 thanks to Johan and Anton Toerien from Bakari PinZ²yl stud with their chef talents for preparing such a delicious meal for all of us. Every breeder who came received a token of appreciation in form of a branded Pinzgauer or PinZ²yl coffee mugs. Our best cattle handler Lucas Dinda and Client Moyo (Zero) won cell phones sponsored by Vodacom through Eugene Cilliers of Lucroy Stud. A big thank you to our judges Maruis Barkhuizen and Martin Seyfferdt with their great judging and fair comments, and also great thanks to Sonja Wasserman for always being there and doing everything with precision accompanied by a smiley face. Without her, a well organised and accurate show catalogue and all the prices well organised for each and every class, would not have been possible. On Friday 26 August 2016 it was the Phase C performance test awards where every breeders society nominates their best phase C bulls. Only bulls that achieved a gold or silver merit can participate, for The Pinzgauer we had Grootboom Schuster (B140017) and PinZ²yl we had Mathomo Two Hundred (PZ140200) and unfortunately we didn t win it, but that didn t demoralise us instead it says to us we must go back to the drawing board and add some more effort. Congratulations to the Black Angus bull that won. That Friday afternoon we had to soldier on and start preparing for the Interbreed and we had various breeders who participated and assisted in the selection of the interbreed entries. Saturday morning it was the Interbreed, which for it too we set targets and we were aiming at them. The Interbreed started at around 9am we were all set and ready and well it all went exceptionally great and the highlight of the day was us winning the Jacaranda Show 2016 Gold Cup with Kerry Lee (full results attached). All the members present from our Society where overwhelmed as this trophy and all the prices we won for the Interbreed was for the Pinzgauer and PinZ²yl Cattle Breeders Society. Abraham Lincoln said We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses that is why we continue to be indebted to all the breeders who make an effort to support the Society s activities. Unlike other shows we had time to pack well and neatly with everyone giving a helping hand. All our cattle were healthy our medicine box didn t have to be opened throughout the entire show. Finally, we had to come back, well Pretoria was a great host, even the Jacaranda Show personnel were so welcoming and corporative and we thank them. Also we thank the tireless efforts of Paul Bester and his ZZ2 team for their continued enthusiasm and unselfish diligence. It is truly a pleasure to be part of this team. We also thank the good Lord for the privilege He has bestowed upon us of working closely with His creation. Thank you to everyone who voluntarily publishes our cattle and Societies events on different media platforms. Now more than ever before we are looking forward to the 2017 Show program.

12 EDWARD MASINDI BAVENDA Edward Masindi Bavenda born 09 June 1967 in Venda started working at ZZ2 Livestock on the 3 rd of August 1999 as a cleaner; he is well known for his Christian devotion, a man who for 17 years never attended a disciplinary hearing or quarrelled with any staff member, an upright honest man. There are many different ways to define what a hero is. Many people believe that a hero is an individual who is very strong and has power. This isn't very realistic, since we all know that no human being can actually have divine powers. Others believe that a hero is one who has saved a life by putting his/her own life on the line. We view a hero as a person who is distinguished for a special achievement in a particular field. Bavenda s hard work, dedication, attitude and passion for his work thrilled us at the Jacaranda Show Bavenda would wake up at 4:30am to start helping the cook, at around 7:00am he would start doing his rounds of cleaning with his wheelbarrow which we gave names like Toyota, Isuzu and later Mahindra. At the award giving ceremony he was awarded a trophy of the most dedicated worker on show by the Pinzgauer and PinZ²yl Cattle Breeders Society. This award made him a proud man and he shared how he always felt scolded when people said he did nothing the whole day and now he is happy that his efforts are finally recognised, these are the kind of employees we need in our division, always going an extra mile. During the interbreed we won the best displayed stall and this was all because of the likes of Edward epitome of dedication. His capability to spend six days in succession doing his rounds of cleaning the stalls, being very positive in his abilities and his will to succeed by going an extra mile and always being there when we need him, has reminded us that indeed an old road has no thorns and he is a very humble man who never brag about his long service or thinking that he knows better. Bavenda opened our eyes and made us realise that making yourself useful for others while enjoying what you do is the only way to live. His dedication brought smiles to our faces and also encouraged us to also do our best. When someone has such an impact on our farm, the way a person leads their life and inspires someone to be someone, he is a hero. 13 Hoofstuk 10 Logix Logix staan vir Livestock Operational and Genetic Information Exchange n stelsel waardeur gebruikers elektroniese toegang verkry tot sekere data en inligting van diere wat aangeteken is. Die sukses van diereproduksie kan verhoog word indien telers toepaslike inligting kan aanwend om meer doeltreffende besluite te neem oor hul produksieprosesse. Logix is n stelsel wat telers en produsente direkte toegang bied tot die jongste inligting van hul kuddes. Die stelsel werk met n aanlyn basis; sodra n geboorte dus op die Logix-stelsel aangeteken is, word dit dadelik na verwerking in berekening gebring by die opstel van n nuwe verslag Doel Daar is reeds in 2002 begin om die Logix-fasiliteit te ontwikkel. Aanvanklik was dit n blote navraaghulpmiddel vir telersgenootskappe en hul personeel en beamptes van SA Stamboek, met die focus op navrae en verslae oor die registrasie- en produksiebesonderhede van diere. Logix het egter intussen ontwikkel tot n toegangspoort vir n wye reeks gebruikers, waarvan telers seker die belangrikste is en bied gevorderde verslae wat n groot hoeveelheid kritiese inligting vir telers bevat. Al wat benodig word om Logix te gebruik is n persoonlike rekenaar met internet toegang. Die verslae is in PDF-formaat wat gelees kan word met n program soos Acrobat Reader, wat gratis van die internet afgelaai kan word Fuksies Logix verskaf nie net bloot statistieke nie; dit gee toegang tot uitgebreide tersaaklike verslae wat telers kan ondersteun in hul pogings om hul kuddes meer produktief te maak. Vir telers van vleisbeeste, is daar bv., spesifieke verslae gebaseer op hulle kuddes produksie-, vrugbaarheid-, of teeltinligting waarmee hulle onmiddelik onproduktiwe diere kan identifiseer. Die meeste verlae wat telers aanvra, neem net n minuut of twee om saam te stel. Logix bied ook aan telers die geleentheid om geboortes elektronies aan te meld en om groeitoetsdata wat op die plaas gemeet word via die internet op die stelsel te plaas Kostes Buiten die ontrekking van data vir die voorbereiding van veilingskatalogusse, is die gebruik van Logix tans nog gratis. Indien gebruikersfooie wel in die toekoms ingestel word, sal dit gebaseer wees op heersende prysstrukture Gebruik Logix beskik oor n uitgebreide datasekerheidstelsel wat verseker dat elke gebruiker slegs toegang het tot die data van sy eie kudde, deur n individuele gebruikersnaam en wagwoord. Telers het egter toegang tot sekere rasgemiddeldes om met hul eie kuddes se gegewens te vergelyk. Beskikbare verslae en inligting sluit in. n teeltwaarde-spesifikasieverslag waardeur n teler die diere in n ras kan identifiseer wat voldoen aan sy bepaalde spesifikasies vir BLUP-teeltwaardes. 14 Kraalkaarte met ouderdomme met eerste kalwing (OEK) en tussenkalfperiodes (TKP s) vir vleisbeeste, nageslagopsommings van beide koeie en bulle; en uitvoersertifikate. n reek reproduksieverslae waarin meestal OEK- en TKP- data ontleed word, en wat onder meer oorskryding van reproduksienorme aandui. Embriospoelings word in ag geneem by die berekening van die TKP s en opgegradeerde- en ingevoerde diere met volledige data se OEK s en TKP s benadeel nie meer die ras- en kuddegemiddeldes nie. Deur Logix kan telers genootskappe nou self veilingskatalogusse opstel. Boonop is die minimum standaarde waaraan veilingsdiere moet voldoen in die Logix-stelsel ingebou vir sekere rasse.. 15 BREEDERS QUESTIONS / TELERS VRAE: 1. Kan die stoetbeeste wat ek gekoop het by n ander stoet teler se ID verander word na my stoet se voorvoegsel? Nee; die geregistreerde ID is permanent vir elke dier, jy kan slegs eienaarskap verander by SA Stamboek. 2. Before buying stud animals what documentation should I get from the seller? If the animal is pregnant, the seller should furnish registration details of the cow, and details of the bull that serviced the cow and a pregnancy certification by a Veterinarian. For Bulls the seller must issues a registration certificate, fertility test certificate and clearance certificate of TB & CA all these documents certified by a Veterinarian. Only inspected and registered animals can be sold for breeding purposes. 3. Why should my animals be inspected? The Breeders Society has a mandate and obligation of maintaining the minimum breed standards therefore it is important that all registered animals in the Calf Book be inspected when they are over 12 months in order to be eligible for registration so that you can later breed with them. Inspection of all animals, which are retained for breeding purposes, is compulsory. 4. How do I import or export livestock and breeding material? The exchange of animals and related genetic material should always be done responsibly. In RSA import and exports of animals and genetic material is governed by Animal Improvement Act. Application should be send to the Society in triplicate on forms available from the office of the Registrar, then the society will forward the two copies to the Registrar with recommendations and certify if the animals concerned do comply with the minimum breed standards, then the Registrars office shall process the application.
