The Pioneers won handily by 170 points, giving Grinnell 14 titles in the last 16 years. After a building season in , they see the return of many point earners and the promise of a strong first-year class. This hard-fought battle to continue their hold on the conference title will fuel the motivation for the Pioneers and the 2018 campaign. During last year s championship, the Pioneer men captured one relay title (800-yard freestyle) and eight individual titles. The men set two school records, two conference and conference meet record, earned the Swimmer and Newcomer of the Year awards (Will Lindell 19 and Houfu Yan 20) and achieved two NCAA B qualifying times. After graduating an exceptionally talented senior class, the team will rely on its depth as well as key performances from former conference titlists Yan (100 back and 200 fly), Lindell (100 and 200 breaststroke and 400 IM), and Ben Grubb 19 (200 free). To achieve a third consecutive team title, it will take much more than individual titles. The Pioneers will need to expose the depth in the entire roster as they move through the three-day league meet. The addition of some talented newcomers will factor greatly for the conference title drive. Sprint Freestyle: With one returning point scorer (Joshua Tibatemwa 19, 13th), the Pioneers are looking for a transformed sprinting crew in the shortest distance contested. Returners Kahlil Epps 18, Grubb, and James Park 20 could all contend for points if the lineup runs in their favor. Newcomers Kevin Donahue 21, Elisha Tibatemwa 21, Justin Chen 21, and Mitch Sevier 21 could all see action to garner some points come February. After finishing runner-up in the 100 freestyle in 2017, Grubb will look for a position atop the podium in the 2018 race. He is joined by the only other returning point scorer, Ben Heller 20 (11th). They could be joined by Joshua Tibatemwa, Park, and Albert Ford 20, as well as first-years Sevier and Elisha Tibatemwa. This crew will be battling it out for top relay spots. In the 200, two returners placed in the final heat, with Grubb taking home the MWC title. Heller (sixth) will look to climb the podium, and the duo could be joined by returners Nick Roberson 18, Ford, Kai Vorhies 19, and Chris Sharpe 18 and firstyears Kyle Dixon-Anderson 21 and Paul Cover 21. Distance Freestyle: In the 500, the Pioneers showed incredible depth with Heller, Marty Toney 20, and Josh Cottle 18 finishing fourth, fifth, and ninth respectively. They will look to Vorhies, Grubb, Alex Johnson 20 and Alden Wahsono 20 and first-years Dixon-Anderson, Cover, and Haakon Larsen 21. In the longest distance, half of the one-two punch from 2017 returns with Cottle (second). He will be backed up by Toney (fifth), Chris Sharpe 18 (ninth), Vorhies, and Johnson. Looking to join the pack will be first-years Dixon-Anderson and Steven Sharpe 21. Backstroke: 2017 was a rebuilding year for the 100, and the Pioneers saw three of the top eight finishes. Yan, Roberson, and Jackson Thompson 20 finished first, fifth, and eighth. Park, Vorhies, and Epps will help build on that dominant performance this season. In the 200, Yan (second), Roberson (fifth), and Thompson (ninth) will look for some assistance from Epps, Vorhies, and Park to bring on some depth. Breaststroke: ln the 100, returning MWC champion Lindell and runner-up Brodie Mikuta 19 plan to be back to battle it out for the title in Lindell not only took home the title, but broke the conference meet and school records with his performance in Joshua Tibatemwa (ninth) will also plan to climb the rankings into the final heat this February, and first-year Elisha Tibatemwa, Donahue, and returner Chris Sharpe could add some depth. Rhett Lundy 18 returns after a year away and has extensive conference experience with a 2016 conference title in the 100. With all four returners in the longer event (Lindell and Mikuta, first and fifth, respectively), as well as Chris Sharpe and Joshua Tibatemwa (11th and 12th), the Pioneers hope to increase their 45-point total from They might be able to get some additional assistance from Elisha Tibatemwa and Steven Sharpe. Wahsono and August Peterson 21 also have breaststroke experience. Expect Lundy to push the crew with his return for his final season. Lindell will look to improve his NCAA B standard time for an invitation to the NCAA championship meet this season. Butterfly: One of the lightest events, Thompson (10th) is the sole returner from The Pioneers expect to fortify this event by adding some points from Epps, Yan, Toney, and Ford. The biggest addition could come from first-years Cover, Larsen, Donahue, Chen and Sevier. In the longer distance, 56 of the 72 points from the 2017 meet come from returners. Yan will seek the title for a second consecutive year and look for support from Toney (sixth), Roberson (seventh), and Ford (eighth). Adding to the depth of the longer distance, look for first-years Cover, Steven Sharpe, and Larsen. Individual Medley: All of 2017 scorers could return this season in the shorter individual medley with Grubb (third), Ford (fifth), and Mikuta (sixth). The goal is to meet or exceed the 60 points garnered in last year s league meet. To do that, the Pioneers could also get some help from Yan, Lindell, and Lundy and first-years Donahue, Sevier, and Elisha Tibatemwa. In the longer IM, Lindell returns to defend his title as well as all the Pioneers finalists in Cottle (third), Ford (fifth), and Chris Sharpe (sixth). Adding to this Pioneer haul could be returners Thompson, Grubb, Johnson, and newcomers Dixon-Anderson, Steven Sharpe, and Larsen. Diving: The Pioneers rebuilt last season and see three returning point-earners in the coming season. Charlie Paquette 19, Jonathan Rebelsky 20, and Michael Lee 18 finished third, fourth, and fifth respectively on the 1-meter board. On the 3-meter board, Lee finished third, Paquette was fourth, and Rebelsky placed fifth. They look to score even more points with the help of first-year Harper Smith 21. Third-year Grinnell dive coach Mike Retelsdorf will have the divers prepared to climb the ranks to improve on their 2017 performances.

This brings their total to 18 team conference titles since Last season was a dominating team performance, winning by just over 300 points in the league meet. Maria Venneri 18 returns as a double gold-medalist and individual school record holder. She was MWC Swimmer of the Year in 2016 and captured individual titles in two events and national qualifying standard in one. Joining her are individual title holders Becca Teske 19 and Summer White 18, taking home gold in the 200-yard individual medley and 3-meter diving, respectively. The Pioneers also see the return of many members of the victorious 200 free, 400 free, 800 free, 200 medley and 400 medley relay teams. Pioneer depth is a trademark for the program and instrumental in amassing the 300-point margin of victory. The women s team knows it will be another battle this year, needing to replace the losses of graduating specialists in the sprint freestyle, breaststroke and individual medley. Returners and newcomers know the work ahead. They understand it will take a complete team effort to continue the string of titles to six in a row in Sprint Freestyle: Thirty-one of the 48 points from 2017 will be returning in the 50. Taylor Hurney 18 (fourth), Haley O Neill 18 (eighth), and Gretchen Schreiner 20 (11th) all look to climb the ladder in Joining them will be first-years Madeline Peak 21, Olivia Konieczny 21, Kaia Clarke 21, and Sarah Weltz 21, as well as returners Hanna O Neill 20, Malena Maxwell 18, Ana Pulak 19, and Teske. In the 100, only 29 of the 81 points are returning this season, in Hurney (third) and Haley O Neill (sixth). Again, the team will look to the sprinting crew previously mentioned as well as Shannon Ellery 18 and Anna Billy 20 for added depth. In the longest sprint, returners Haley O Neill and Billy, sixth and 11th respectively, will look to Ellery, Annie Galloway 18, Zala Tomasic 18, Sierra Silverwood 18, and Schreiner as well as newcomer McKynley Larson 21 for additional points and relay depth. Distance Freestyle: Not quite as deep in the 500, the Pioneers will return only one finalist from Billy placed 10th overall. She could be helped by Galloway, Ellery, Tomasic, Hannah Davis 20, Eve Galen 19, Kate Irwin 20, and Andrea Running 20, along with newcomers Marguerite Devine-Mraz 21 and Larson. In the meet s ultimate distance event, the 1,650, the Pioneers return Galloway and Billy (fourth and seventh in 2017). Ellery s and Davis exhibition times in the prelims would have had been 14th and 15th place championships finishes, respectively. Add Larson and Irwin, and the Pioneers could fortify this event. Backstroke: record holder and MWC champion Venneri will return to seek a first-place finish after finishing runner-up in the 100 backstroke last season. Teske, Maxwell, Tomasic and first-years Peony Teo 21 and Larson could add to the mix and help back up Venneri. In the longer distance, Venneri will be striving for a repeat title to make it four in a row and another NCAA qualifying standard this season. With Venneri, the only returning point scorer in the 200, they could see help from Maxwell with conference point-scoring experience and newcomers Teo and Larson. Breaststroke: In the 100 breaststroke, two returning point-earners will be seeking podium spots once again. Running placed fourth overall, and Schreiner placed eighth. In the 200, three returners will help earn points at the conference meet. Running, Galloway, and Schreiner placed fourth, fifth, and ninth respectively. They will look for additional points in both distances from returner Natalie Niederman 20 and newcomers Clarke, Weltz, and Kaela Girod 21. Butterfly: Returning all 42 points from last year s 100-butterfly crew, Teske (second), Hurney (sixth), and Hanna O Neill (seventh) are eying their climb up the conference ranks in With the addition of Billy and Devine-Mraz, the Pioneers will look to repeat that dominant performance. The longer event for the Pioneers has MWC runner-up Teske and Hanna O Neill (eighth) as the returning point scorers for They will need some help from Devine-Mraz, Galloway, and Billy. Additionally, Helena Kleiner 18 has seen great improvement this season. This group could give a big push to the Pioneer flyers. Individual Medley: A formidable strength for the Pioneers in 2017 with a 52-point tally at the championships, the individual medleys should be no different in 2018 with 52 of those 59 points coming from returners. Teske (first), Maxwell (second), and Running (fourth) will look for support from Venneri, Niederman, and Galloway and newcomers Clarke and Weltz to maintain a hold on the shorter event. The 400 IM came with another strong finish for the Pioneers, with Venneri, Maxwell, and Galloway taking home first, third, and seventh respectively. The women also have possible support from Billy, Running, and Hanna O Neill. Diving: In 2017, Grinnell College was again the site for the NCAA Region 2 diving championships, marking the third time in four years that Grinnell and the Russell K. Osgood Natatorium have been chosen as host. Summer White returns with a wealth of experience after competing in the regional diving meet in 2017, placing 12th on 1 meter and seventh on 3 meter. Last season, she was third on 1 meter and a conference champion on 3 meter. She was also named the MWC Diver of the Year. White will be joined by returners Katie Parrish 18 (sixth on 1 meter and second on 3 meter) and Elaine Thut 20 (fourth on 1 meter and fifth on 3 meter). Newcomer Amelia Johnson-Post 21 will help build the diving program. Under the tutelage of third-year Pioneer diving coach Mike Retelsdorf, the Pioneer diving squad has a series of goals. This 2018 diving team will work toward developing the divers for competition, moving up on the conference podium, and sending more representatives to the NCAA regionals with an eye to moving on to the NCAA national championships.
