1 Zach DeWitt (FRST) When I first set out on the coaching journey, I had neither ambitions of becoming a lifer and certainly not running for Coaches Representative. Like many of you, I fell in love with the whole of swimming: goals, chasing dreams, problem solving, and kids. My perspectives on many things have changed over those near 10 years, and I m confident that I could contribute to Indiana Swimming with my experiences. Some of my experiences include: 2 Indiana Zone Staffs in coaching capacities 1 Indiana Swimming Senior Elite Camp Charlotte, NC 1 Indiana Swimming Olympic Development Camp Colorado Springs, CO Head Coach of FRST 6 years o From 60 athletes to 115 athletes o From 3 staff members to 7 staff members Aside from the typical duties entrusted to a coach representative, such as COY voting, soliciting coaches for camps / zone / etc., I hope to collaborate with others on a mentorship / networking network for Indiana coaches. I, too often, felt the growing pains of a younger coach without the necessary cahones to ask our best and brightest for direction. I haven t made it and I certainly have growing to do, but through camps / staffs / etc., I ve had people such as Coach Pedersen, Kinel, Keller, Gibson help me along the way. It s important that we help ALL of our coaches, both young and experienced to network with one another. Our strength doesn t lie in our camps, our pools, or our athletes though all of these things tend to get the recognition. Our strengths will always lie within our coaches. It s on us to see this great tradition continue. Sincerely, Zach DeWitt Head Coach / Owner Franklin Regional Swim Team

6 Melanie Pulley s Biography Coach Melanie Pulley has been in the world of swimming since the age of five and she has been coaching swimming professionally for almost 15 years. She grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio where she fell in love with swimming. Melanie was a multi-year qualifier for the Lake Erie Zone Team as well as a member of the Ohio Quad Team (now Mid States). As a senior in high school Melanie moved to Pasadena, Maryland. During her senior year of high school, Melanie qualified for the Eastern Zones Championship, where she competed in the 1650 Freestyle, and 500 Freestyle. After high school she continued her education and swimming career at McDaniel College (Western Maryland College). During her college career Melanie qualified for NCAA Division III Nationals four years in row. During her sophomore year of college Melanie competed in the NCAA Division III Swimming Nationals in the 1650 Free, 500 Free, 400 IM and the 200 IM. Melanie graduated from McDaniel College in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Exercise Science/Physical Education with minors in Sports Coaching and Sports Management. Melanie still holds several swimming records at McDaniel College. After graduating from college in 2004, Melanie decided it was time to move to Indiana to be closer to her family. She began her coaching career as the Head Coach of Pendleton Swim Club and Pendleton Heights High School Men s Swimming Team. Melanie continued her coaching career with a few other teams in Indiana (SSC, HSE, GCAT, GC, WTSC, NC) before she started coaching for Lawrence Swim Team on the east side of Indianapolis. Melanie is currently a Head Group Coach for LST as well as the Business Manager. She enjoys coaching swimmers of all ages and abilities. In 2009, Melanie was appointed to the Indiana Swimming Board of Directors as the Team Indiana Manager. She was very excited to become the Team Indiana Manager since she had been a part of the Zone and Mid States Staff several times. Melanie continued to be the Team Indiana Manager until this past October when she stepped down. During her years as Team Indiana Manager Melanie was able to meet and work with Coaches from all over Indiana as well as watch athletes grow and develop into successful swimmers. Melanie gave lots of hours to help Team Indiana grow; her first few years as Team Indiana Manager the Zone Team and Mid States teams were less than 100 swimmer and prior to her moving on Team Indiana had reached teams of over 200 Swimmers for Zones and over 150 applicants for Mid States. Melanie has also enjoyed the opportunity to meet swimmers and families from all over the state. She was always encouraging and supportive of all Team Indiana athletes and Coaches. Melanie also helped the Indiana Swimming Office with the Multi-Cultural Camps and Multi-Cultural Meets as well as Open Water Zones and Indiana Select Camps. Melanie is currently an ASCA level 2 coach and is continuing her grow and development as a coach, which she hopes to share with fellow Indiana Swimming Coaches. Goals as Coaches Representative 1. Melanie believes it is important to grow and develop relationships between clubs and coaches. If we continue to work together, we can continue to grow and strengthen Indiana Swimming. Indiana is one of the largest LSC s in the USA and I believe we have a lot to offer to the Swimming World as well as our own community.

7 2. Melanie wants all Coaches to know that she is open to their ideas and suggestions and will present what is given to her to the Board. Every voice matters and every voice counts regardless of the size of the team. 3. Melanie would like to see more opportunities within our own state where coaches can attend clinics and swimming seminars. 4. Opportunities where coaches can work together and exchange ideas with each other. 5. She would like to develop a program where newer coaches can be mentored by experience coaches. 6. Continue to grow Team Indiana numbers for Mid States and Zones.
