Swim Talk Volume 10 Issue 10 Friday 5th June Tel: From Your Chairperson Provide accountancy services free of charge to Littlehampton Swimming Club Hi all, On behalf of LSC I d like to send our condolences to the Cameron family on the loss of Margaret, Sue s mother-in-law. A very sad time for them all, and they should know that we are thinking of them. We are well on our way to appointing a new Head Coach, after many late night Committee Meetings we now have things in place to work towards someone stepping into Sue s (very large) shoes!! You will all be fully updated as soon as we have news for you. In the meantime I d like you all to continue as normal with Sue still very much the 'Boss'. My thanks go to all Coaches and helpers who have really stepped up to the mark to fill in for Sue when she's been unable to attend training. Thank you. Please pencil in our Presentation evening on Friday 4th Sep, which will be held after the fun sessions finishing approximately 8.45pm, in the Sports Dome at the back of the centre. A list will be in place a little nearer the time for those who are willing to provide snacks. We thought we'd start next season with a bang!! The Committee have decided to subsidise a day out to the New Forest at the Wibit Aqua Park, this will take place Saturday 5th September. The cost will be pp and a coach will be provided by the club leaving Littlehampton Swimming Centre at 9.30am and return 5pm (approximate times). The day is open to all our swimmers aged 6 years and above, and we hope to hire it exclusively for LSC for an hour (I ve been on one of these and believe me an hour is enough) Please visit their website to see what s in store From Friday 5th June a list will be at the Help Desk for names to be placed on it, if you wish to attend them please bring a cheque made payable to LSC and a seat will be secured for you on the Coach. More detailed information will follow. Fantastic swims at Regionals, I m sure Sue will go into detail in her report. Well done to all!! Thank you to Wendy Frost, Melanie Fleet and Oggs Wayman for Team Managing at the Vanessa Knight Meet hosted by Bognor SC, I also attended and must say all swimmers behaved superbly with great swims to boot!! That s all, Denise xx ANNUAL PRESENTATION EVENING FRIDAY 4th SEPTEMBER FUN SWIM FROM 7PM DETAILS TBC FOLLOWED BY THE ANNUAL AWARD PRESENTATIONS IN THE DOME
Head Coach Report Hi all, Firstly, a huge congratulation to 11 year old Archie Strowger who has been selected to attend this year s ASA South East Region Talent Camps. 12 year old Georgie Howell attended a lower class (S1-S6) day in May with British Para Swimming GB Development Coach Steve Fivash as part of her England Para Talent Programme. A very useful day, the swimmers had to focus on setting goals around three things: STOP / START / CONTINUE. So Georgie is going to STOP dropping her head in freestyle; START to take her land work more seriously and CONTINUE to work her kick hard. Why don t all of you think of three things too and tell your coach. Olympic Visit! Our lucky Monday swimmers were treated to a visit by former Olympian Ágnes Kovács 11th June, kindly arranged by Melissa Mantle through Chichester University. Now 33, Ágnes is an Olympic gold medallist and national record holding breaststroke swimmer from Hungary. She swam at the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympics. At the 2000 Olympics she won the Women's 200m Breaststroke, also setting Hungarian records in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke (1:07.79 and 2:24.03). These records still stand. She was named Hungarian Sportswoman of the Year four consecutive years, from , and was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Ágnes chatted to the swimmers about her experiences first and then showed us some breaststroke drills she used to do, which our swimmers practised. Several of our coaches came to watch too. A final 25m race against some of our swimmers proved exciting, with national swimmer Lewis Smart beating Agnes to the touch! Sussex League Round 1, 09/05/15 We had a great set of results and an excellent night's swimming at Worthing in our first Sussex League gala of the year! There were a large number of PBs, some rather big William Le Merle knocked over 8 seconds off his 100m IM; Will Redwood & Lewis Smart over 5 seconds off their 100m IM and Frankie over 4 seconds off her 100m breaststroke. Charlie Hodges was aiming for a county record from his 50m backstroke lead relay leg; he managed a PB but just missed out on the record - a tough one to get as it was his 6th race of the night. Akos Hausknecht did amazingly well to get PBs in all 3 of his individual races despite a very bruised and swollen toe having injured it earlier in the afternoon. Tyler Whitcombe went under 30 seconds in her 50m freestyle for the first time in the lead leg of the girls 15/U relay. 1st places came from: Anna Mantle (3), Lewis Smart (2), Archie Strowger (2), Jess Frayne, Will Jagger, Abby Smith, Ollie Hodges and Madi Walker. The 13/U girls (Madi Walker, Abby Smith, Emily Pryke & Anna Mantle) and the open men (Will Jagger, Sam Munro, Charlie Hodges, Lewis Smart & Will Condron) relay teams both did the double, winning their freestyle and medley relays. Page 2
Head Coach Report continued Final points were: 1st Brighton 423 2nd LITTLEHAMPTON 347 3rd Worthing 238 This places us 5 th out of 9 teams in the Division 1 table. Congratulations to all the swimmers on a fine performance! Thank you to all our lovely helpers: Mark Savill, Sarah Whitcombe, Helen Smith, Sally Hodges, Mark Brown, Donna Strowger, Phil Jagger, Denise Brown, Keith Hunter, Pip Redwood and Tina Le Merle. Our next Sussex League gala will be tough and is at Crawley on 6 th June. Where we finish in the table after this gala will decide on who we face in the final gala on 27th June. Puffin Trophy Gala, 16/05/15 For many of our swimmers this was their first experience of a team gala. I have heard good reports from the coaches, lead coach Sarah is away at the moment but I'm sure we will see her report in this newsletter. I was really impressed with the large number of PBs. Excellent! We always aim to put a development team in this gala (which those of you who were there probably noticed certain other clubs did not!). I know the children will all have gained from the experience. Thank you to all who helped Sarah: Oli Cox, Gareth Matthews, Jon Frost, Claire Stevens, Mel Green and senior swimmers Tyler Whitcombe and Jessie Brown. Also to Mark Savill who refereed again! Vanessa Knight Open Meet, 24/05/15 Well done to everyone who swam in the Vanessa Knight Open Meet. I have looked through the results and am really pleased with the large number of PBs. Ollie Harvey knocked over 12 seconds off his 100m IM and Zac Evans over 11 seconds off his. Faith Powell managed a huge 9 second PB on her 50m butterfly, whilst recently promoted Lauren Stevens knocked another 10 seconds off her 200m freestyle even though we have only recently swam time trials in this. Well done to Madi Walker who won the 12yr girls 100m IM and came 2nd in her other 3 events, and to Emily Pryke who came 2nd in the 13yr girls 50m butterfly. Unfortunately the results we have do not show the winners in each grade so you will have to tell me if you won a B or C grade medal! Thank you to our poolside helpers: Denise Hunter, Wendy Frost, Oggs Wayman and Melanie Fleet. Also to Keith Hunter who helped set up and run the gala for them! South East Regional Competitions, 16-31/05/15 The South East Regional competitions are always a highlight of any swimmers year, so we were all very sorry to hear that first time qualifier William Redwood dislocated his kneecap a few days before and is now in plaster unable to swim. We wish you a speedy recovery Will! Our swimmers have had a very successful regionals. Our age groupers Charlie Hodges, Ollie Hodges, Will Le Merle, Lewis Smart, Abby Smith and Archie Strowger swam on the first weekend. Archie did a stunning 200m butterfly with a huge 6 second PB in a new long course club record of 2: Charlie and Lewis both look like they will both be heading for the British Summer Championships and the ASA Nationals (we will know definitely on 10th June). Between them they made 7 finals and broke 8 club records! Lewis won silver in his 50m breaststroke and bronze in his 100m breaststroke, whilst Charlie won silver in his 100m freestyle. The second weekend saw the girls relay team of Jessie Brown, D Arcy Kosla-Rule, Ella Porter and Tyler Whitcombe in action. They improved on their seeding by two places in both the freestyle and medley relay. Unfortunately we had to with draw the boys team with William unable to swim. The long distance also took place on the second weekend, with Lewis swimming again in the 400m freestyle and 400m IM, setting a further two more new club records in both. Thank you to Sarah Whitcombe who was the team coach this weekend. One of the things we got the age group swimmers to do was to focus on their race skills. They had to set skills based objectives and then rate their performance on these. For example, how well they performed their underwater phase and break out. This is all part of getting swimmers to think more about the process and not just the outcome i.e. how they are going to achieve their goals. Page 3
Head Coach Report continued The final weekend saw our Youth and Multi-classification swimmers in action. Will Jagger, Sam Munro, Jess Frayne, Callum Strowger, Ryan Lamprell, Caleb Grace and Georgie Howell all attended. Sam s 100 backstroke was a superb long course PB, as were Callum s 50m freestyle and Ryan s 50m breast stroke, both on their regional debuts. Jess made her first regional final in the 50m freestyle, finishing 6th. Will shone this year in his butterfly events making the final in both the 100 and 200m butterfly, winning Bronze in both and making it look easy! There were more multi-classification swimmers this year. Awards are based on disability points, with all categories grouped as one multiclassification event and points being awarded for their time achieved in their class, irrespective of age. This meant both Georgie and Caleb were racing against swimmers older than them. It also meant that the winner was not necessarily the fastest swimmer. S14 swimmer Caleb achieved three bronze medals in his 50 m and 200 m freestyle events and his 100m backstroke. Georgie won Gold in her 100m breaststroke and Silver in the 200m individual medley. Both Georgie and Caleb have qualified for the ASA Nationals. Well done to all our Regional swimmers on some great results this year! Our senior swimmers have now started a new cycle of work as we start to prepare those who will be heading to Sheffield at the end of July. We will all be eagerly checking to see who will be where on the 10th June. Good luck to our Sussex League Team this weekend and to our Crawley Airtech Relay Gala Team on the 20th June. Please make sure if you have received an invite for the Airtech gala that you reply ASAP if you haven t already done so. It is very difficult and time consuming trying to find replacement swimmers at short notice, plus I can t work out who is swimming which events until I know who the final team members are! Thank you as always to our superb team of volunteer coaches! Happy swimming! 5 Squad Coach Chat Adlington Academy Hi Team, Good Luck to Lauren, Jess and Joe who have moved to Jackson Squad. The coaches are lovely but you will have to swim further so make sure you show them how good you are! Some of Adlington were chosen to swim in the Puffin Gala this month. This is a friendly Gala and it is a real honour to be chosen to swim for your club. The swimmers were Ollie, Sam, Issy and Aaron. Sam got a PB for his 25m Freestyle, Aaron swam a PB in his 25 Backstroke and Issy managed a PB in her 25m Backstroke. These were all individual events. They also took part in relays and Ollie was in the Breast-stroke Squadron and the freestyle relay. I m sorry I couldn t be there but I was at the Regional's with my daughter Abby (who is in Thorpe Squad). I hope that you all had fun, it s quite hectic at team galas but make sure you always see a coach at the end before you go home then we know that you are safe and you get a lolly too!! Huge thanks to all of our lane coaches on Adlington, we couldn t do it without you! Turner, Dan and Gareth. Keep trying your best all of the time. Helen xx Jackson Squad Hello, This month we had to say a sad good bye to Denise who has been with Jackson squad for some time, I know we will all miss having her around Jackson but wish her all the best. A thank you from me as well for making me feel welcome and helping me learn the ropes when I first started with Jackson you always made it fun and enjoyable, must say I do seem to have a lot more pens now you re gone though!!! x We would like to welcome Lauren, Tegan, Jess and Joe to Jackson squad they have been working very hard to move up a squad and all their hard work has paid off, keep it up guy s! This month we had the following selected to represent the club in the puffin team gala; Ella Thornburg, Amelie Gilford, Georgia Slade, Henry Watts, Joseph Jackson, Connor Boreham, Lauren Stevens, Ella Napier, Keeley Taylor, Josh Tomley This is a good development team gala that gives you a chance to work as a team and for some there first experience of racing in a competition. You all swam very well with a lot of pb s and did extremely well not to jump the start with the trouble they were having with the starting system! I will say this was a very loud and busy gala and I m pretty sure Littlehampton had the loudest chant!! For the future I d like to remind you that when you have finished your race to go and speak to the coach that is poolside with you for some feedback, this gives you some pointers of where you may be able to improve and what we can work on within training. Please also don t leave the team area without speaking to the coach first during the gala or after it has finished, this is the time your coach can run through the event and if you re lucky get a lolly to go home with! We have a club gala coming up very soon so we will be training extra hard to improve your technique, dives, turns, underwater faze for each stroke and most important your streamline! Please try to remember in training this is what we are working on and you need to remember the points you are given so we can improve on them the next time. You have all come on a lot with your dives after your session with your head coach Sue so you need to keep practicing the techniques you learnt every session so you can progress the next time. Please remember it is a training session not a race! You will improve your technique much more when you re not trying to race the person in front of you or rushing to the front of the lane and forgetting to listen to what you re meant to be doing! In order to succeed, your desire for success must be greater than your fear of losing Thank you to the all the Jackson coaches D Arcy, Tyler and Callum My for anything swimming related gmatt919@live.co.uk Train Hard! Gareth Page 5
Squad Coach Chat Foster Squad Hi Team, Welcome to Abigail & Becky who have joined us recently, we hope you have fun in Foster Squad and work very hard. It s the top squad in the early session so other lanes will be watching you. Make sure you always tumble turn and never stop in your lane, we want to set a good example! I d like to say a special welcome to Seb who has come to Foster Squad from Jackson. Seb used to swim with me at iswim and then in Adlington. He missed me so much he worked really hard and swam fast in Jackson so that he could get back to me again in Foster!!!!! This month we had the first round of the Sussex League. This was at Splashpoint pool and we were against Worthing and Brighton. Amber, Alivia, Jess, Joe, Daniel, Amelia, Alfie, Ellen were selected. They all swam well with PB s and great team spirit. Jess Blower had a good swim on her 50 free and knocked off 1.5 secs. Well done Jess, that hard work in training is paying off! We also had The Puffin Gala which is a friendly gala at Pavillions in the Park, Horsham. Marissa, Anna D, Amber, Nicola, Lawson, Alfie, Ollie I, Zak, Abigail, Beth, Ollie H and Seb were chosen this time. Between them they managed 9 PB s in individual events which is great. Overall we came 6/8 which was a good result as we played fairly by the rules (whereas not all of the other teams did! Being a friendly gala there should not have been any County or Regional swimmers there and some of the others clearly had some) Good work team. I m sorry I couldn t be there, I was at the Regionals with my daughter Abby but I was given some feedback and am very proud of you all. Zak s Fly race was great, Alfie had a good strong swim and Amber and Oliver H s underwater phases were lovely. Finally it was the Vanessa Knight Meet. This is a lovely gala held at Arun Leisure Centre in Bognor. Unfortunately the results only show the overall results, not the A, B and C results where some of you may have medalled. It is not on their website either. If you got a medal and me I can put it in next month s Swimtalk. Amelia PB d in her 200 free, Alfie PB d in his 50 back & 200 free, Oliver H had a huge 12 second PB in his 100IM, Ollie I PB d on 50 breast and 200 free, Zak did a PB in his 50 free, Ellen got a PB in her 50 back & 50 breast. Remember when you are at a Gala to stay still on the blocks after Take Your Marks has been announced! We need to always think carefully about our races. There were a few DQ s this month and if you practise properly in training then you should never get it wrong in a race. You are all fabulous swimmers and are in Foster Squad now so I should not have to keep telling you like I do Adlington!! ALWAYS touch with 2 hands for breast and fly, finish and push off on your back for backstroke and remember your underwater dolphin kicks in all strokes except breast. Do this and you will not only be legal in every race, you will improve and get faster which is what we all want! Thanks to all who give up their time for Foster Squad, we couldn t do it without you Mark, Ryan, Sally, Dan, Charlie Baker, Sarah & Sue. Good luck to everyone swimming at galas next month, particularly lane coach Ryan who has qualified for the Regionals. This is a Huge achievement and we wish him lots of luck and fast swimming! Great work team My address is helsandmark@btinternet.com if you have any questions. Keep up the good work. Helen x Thorpe Squad Hi guys, It s been quite a busy month for some of you, but I hope you all managed to have a lovely relaxing half-term. Straight into galas and I'm pleased to report that Archie swam 2 events at the Regionals, along with Will, Abby and Ollie, who each swam 1 event! Archie swam the 100m and 200m fly; Will and Ollie swam the 50m free and Abby swam the 50m breaststroke. It's a really tough competition and all four swam really well, with Archie getting a great 7s pb on his 200m fly to swim sub 3 minutes for the first time! Congratulations to all of you. Following on from his success at the Regionals, Archie has been selected to take part in the Regional Swimming Camp, where he will receive extra training and tuition. Well done Archie, have fun and learn lots of tips to bring back to the rest of us!! The first round of the Sussex League was very exciting and congratulations to Madi, Ollie, Abby and Archie (2) who all won an event. Also to the U/13 team of Madi, Abby, Emily and Anna who won both their Medley and Freestyle relays. Sue has already covered the gala in detail with results so I've kept this one brief. Page 6
Squad Coach Chat continued Thorpe Squad Cont. The next galas coming up are: the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the Sussex League, so well done to Archie, Ollie, Madi, Emily, Abby, Will, Zak and Akos who have all been selected; then the Crawley Relay gala, and well done to Ellie, Amelia, Amelie, Charlotte, Hannah, Abigail, Stephen, Luke and Zac who have been selected to swim at this; and lastly the Sussex County Development gala. I would expect to see most of you enter at least one or two events at this gala to gain experience and improve your times. It is an open gala where you will get to compete against other swimmers of like ability within the County. In Sue's , detailing the event, there were guidelines for what you should enter however, please check with me first if you are unsure. The more galas you can enter, the better you will get and they will become easier! Finally, last month some of you took part in a SWOLF test set, and this stands for swimming golf. The aim of this test is to improve your efficiency. You needed to think hard and change your swim to make yourself more efficient and so get a "better" score. This could be by swimming faster, lowering your stroke count or a combination of both; and you need to think about how you can achieve this. Again, this could include a better kick, a longer under water phase or a stronger pull, for instance. So, this month in training, I would like you to continue thinking about HOW you can improve your swimming. It's not enough to say swim faster...how will you swim faster?? Happy thinking!! If you need to get in touch with me for any reason at all, including to let me know what you have achieved, you can contact me on swhitcombe692@hotmail.co.uk Sarah xx iswim Chat This month we have a dedicated Swimathon report. Two of our iswimmers took part in the Mayor s Swimathon this year and both of them were amazing, swimming much further than any of us could have imagined! Here are some pictures of Ciara Humphries. She is only 4 and was starting to take her first strokes alone. Her furthest distance was 3 metres. On the day, with her family there supporting her and lots of cheering she swam a whole length! 25 metres!! Awesome! A very happy Ciara showing off her medal below and with her big sister Erin from Jackson Squad. Our other Queen of Swimathons is Emma Hill. Emma is in our top group at Oak Grove Pool and is an experienced swimmer. Last year in the Swimathon she swam 75 metres which is 3 lengths of the big pool. Mum, Dad and Brother James went along to watch again this year, expecting to be there for about half an hour. Three and a half hours later Emma had swum an incredible 3000 metres (YES! 3000 metres!!) 120 lengths! So as well as being super proud of such a mammoth swim, they were all very hungry as dinner was 3 hours late and they got to stay up late too!! Well done Emma, we re very proud of you!! I wonder how far you ll manage next year?!? Fantastic girls! Helen x Page 7
Club Captain Chat Hi guys, May has been a great month again! The regionals have been good so far with Lewis Smart, Will Le Merle, Archie Strowger, Abby Smith, Ollie Hodges and I all competed at the first weekend. Between us, we made 7 finals and picked up 3 medals. Lewis took Bronze in the 100m Breast and Silver in the 50m Breast and I got silver in the 100m free. We also got a few 4th and 5th places between us. Hopefully some of these swims will qualify us for the British summer championships and ASA Nationals. Archie swam in the 100m and 200m Butterfly and in the 200m he did over a 7 second LC pb! Lewis then competed last weekend in the 400m free and IM and he swam PB s in both events. Ella Porter, Tyler Whitcombe, Jessie Brown and Darcy Kosla-Rule also swam in the Medley and Freestyle relays and swam overall team PB s both times. We also competed in round one of Sussex league coming second overall. There were lots of good individual swims, PB s and first places. The Vanessa Knight meet was also a good success with many swimmers from Littlehampton competing with lots of PB s and medals. Good luck to everyone competing next weekend at the last weekend of regionals and in round 2 of Sussex League in June. Charlie Hi everyone, We have had the first Sussex League and everybody swam extremely well, placing us second behind Brighton and beating Worthing. The second one is really soon, we are against Crawley and Hastings, good luck to everyone swimming. Also this month lots of you swam in the Puffin Gala, and did really well, especially as it was the first team gala for some of you. Finally this month we had the regionals and this year we had more swimmers competing than ever before. There were some brilliant swims, including great PB s and medals. The swimmers got there by training hard and doing their pre water make sure you do the same! Tyler Hi, I hope you all enjoyed the half term break, training sometimes gets forgotten but I haven't noticed that in the pool, so well done guys! Special mention for all the swimmers taking their exams, thanks for putting in the extra efforts and good luck with your results. Great to see the times from Vanessa Knight and the regionals, some excellent performances and PB s, superb, on behalf of the entire club another huge thanks to Sue and all our coaches for helping us achieve these successes.
