Last year was a nice beginning to my being president. There were a few speed bumps along the way but nothing that we couldn t handle. Thank you to Joe Graziano, Agi Khoury, and Mary Kushner for their service to our club. Chip Ferradino is also leaving from our grounds crew. We wish them all well. We re adding a few new faces to our board this year. Debbie Kempers will be our Vice President of Personnel. Noelle Matiste is taking on the Treasurer position. Todd Henderson is coming onto our Aquatics team. You may have noticed that our landscape was transformed last year. A custom built swing set, shade area by the kiddie pool, and landscaping around the fence area were nice upgrades. We also purchased additional chairs and umbrellas for the grounds. We will continue to make additional improvements as needed. It s also going to be a lot brighter on the tennis courts this year! We invested in a new set of lights to assist in nighttime tennis play. It s going to be an exciting summer for us. If you haven t heard Poland is hosting this year s YSL Championship meet. This is a huge event for our club as it will be our primary fundraiser. That being said it s going to be all hands on deck! We re going to need plenty of help. More information will be coming out but mark your calendars for July 29th. We have some fun social events planned for the summer. Friday Night Lights, S mores Galore, Movie Night, and Camp Out will take place. We also plan to have a few adult only nights. Keep an eye out on the blasts with more info. We had a successful 2016 swim and tennis season. We encourage anyone who is interested to come out and sign up. Registration is in April. Hope to see you there! The swim club is happy to announce the sale of a parcel of land for $25,000. It puts us in better financial position to maintain our club for everyone's enjoyment. Let s all come together as a community to show how great our Poland Swim Club is. It is an asset to Poland to have such a nice place at such a great value. The YSL Championship will be our shining moment. We have very dedicated and active members that promise to continue this tradition of excellence. I ll see you all poolside soon! 2 Newsletter - April 2017 Pay Annual Dues By May 15 All annual dues payments are due by May 15. The 2017 Dues Statement was sent in the mail in April. If you did not receive it, you may complete the last page of this newsletter, or send your name, certificate number, mailing address and address along with your check payable to the Poland Swim Club to: Noelle Matiste, Treasurer, P.O. Box 5127, Poland, Ohio Please refer to the bylaws for information on consequences if annual dues, including any late fee assessments, are not paid by July 1st. Club Financial Statements Any member who wishes to receive electronic copies of the financial statements through March 31 should send an request to PSC Secretary (carrie_ogden@yahoo.com). These documents are intended for members use only. Membership Information Welcome to all the new members who have joined PSC since the close of the 2016 swim season! Our 2017 season begins Saturday May 27th and ends Labor Day Sept.4th. Operating hours are from 12 noon to 9pm daily. The Toddler Pool opens at 10am. New members can join for a $300 initiation fee, $800 stock fee, and annual dues. Help spread the word to your friends and family so we can fill our openings and fulfill our membership goals. We had a successful season last year with a significant increase in new members - let's do it again this year! For more information regarding membership, contact Kim Brant at or at KimBrant@me.com. Any member wishing to sell their membership will need to provide their stock certificate, signed and dated on the back. If you are unable to locate your original stock certificate, you will need to provide a notarized letter stating your intent to sell and including your full name(s) and membership number. This information should be mailed to Kim Brant, 6787 Boardwalk Drive, Poland, Ohio Please submit any stock certificates before May 15th (the deadline for annual dues). Please be aware that you have the option to sell your stock privately as opposed to through the swim club. Contact Kim Brant as listed above with any questions. House guest families of four or more can purchase a family guest ticket for $20 per week. Local grandchildren passes may be obtained. These allow each grandchild 14 visits per season with a charge of $5 per visit. Grandparents must accompany their grandchildren. Guests will not be admitted unless the member signing them in is at the pool. Party Pavilion Rentals Party Pavilion Rentals are $75 for members and $150 for non-members. All fees must be prepaid in order to reserve the pavilion. Swim Team April 24: Swim Suit & Tennis Uniform Try-On Monday, April 24 is the first of two opportunities to sign up for the Swim Team, but this day is the only opportunity to try on team suits for swim. We will be using a new suit this season. Swim Team Registration Dates Our registration procedure remains as last year with two in-person registration dates. Late registration (after May 15) is $50 (Maximum of $150 per family). Parents should indicate their preferred committee assignment on the registration form. As in the past, we will do our best to honor these requests. The fee in lieu of volunteering at meets is $100. Parents Meeting: June 4 Sunday June 4 is the date of the Swim Team and Tennis Team Parent Meetings. 5 Newsletter - April 2017 Tennis Ladies Tennis There will be ladies round-robin tennis every Tuesday starting May 30 at 7 p.m. for a fun, social, non-competitive evening. All ladies interested in the Penn-Ohio competitive league should contact Lisa Lasko at or Diana Edwards at Ladies Team Tennis practices are Monday and Wednesday at 11 a.m. starting May 31. Matches are Thursday mornings. There is a one-time fee of $5. Men s Tennis Men s night is Monday evenings at 6:30 p.m. starting June 5. This is a non-competitive, social evening of round-robin tennis. Mixed Doubles Tennis Mixed Doubles Tennis is a non-competitive evening where all levels are welcome. Matches take place Sunday evenings at 6pm. Get Your Beach Body HERE! Did you know you can burn 600 calories per hour with Cardio Tennis? Cardio Tennis is a fun, social, group tennisfitness program for people of all ages and abilities. It s more about getting a full body, highenergy workout than pure tennis technique. You don t have to be Serena or Rafael to enjoy an energizing workout of Cardio Tennis! Constant movement is the focus as your guide takes you through a series of fun and heart-pumping drills that cater to all abilities and fitness levels. No tennis experience is necessary. This program is designed for players of all levels, from total beginners to advanced players. If you like exercising in a group, then you will find Cardio Tennis the perfect motivator. Each year, our program continues to advance the level of play and enjoyment of the game of tennis. The staff sincerely enjoys working with our kids and adults as well! Youth Tennis Clinics (ages 8 and up) Learn tennis basics. One hour clinics will be every Monday and Thursday at 3pm beginning June 12. No sign-up needed, pay as you go, $7 per clinic. Tyro Tennis (5-7-year-old). is class uses special equipment designed for their developmental abilities. Tyro Tennis is a version of tennis designed for children that uses large, slow-moving foam balls, smaller racquets, lower nets and smaller courts. Each lesson will focus on agility, balance, coordination and speed. Racquets will be provided. Students will need to wear tennis shoes and bring a cold drink. Parents of 5 year olds are asked to stay nearby during the lesson. Six half-hour sessions will be Monday and Wednesday at 10:30 am, June 12 thru June 30. Class Fee: $30 Book reservations and pay fee before June 12. Team Tennis Few sports can compete with tennis in delivering overall physical, mental and emotional benefits. Teaching kids how to play tennis can also teach them to: develop a proper work ethic; be able to manage mistakes and failure; accept responsibility; manage adversity; handle; learn teamwork; and develop social skills. All these benefits make tennis the ideal sport for kids to learn early in life. Typically, lessons from a tennis instructor cost $40 per hour. The cost of learning on the PSC Tennis Team is less than you will see anywhere else. Don t miss this opportunity to learn this lifelong sport! Uniform Try-On and Registration April 24 We will have a uniform try-on Monday, April 24 at the Poland Presbyterian Church from 5 to 7 p.m. You ll find us in a room next door to the swim team try- on. You will be able to order and purchase your uniform at this time. The uniforms, which are optional, are the same as last year. You may also register for tennis at this time. Parents Meeting: June 4 The Parents Meeting with Linda Romeo Desotell is Sunday, June 4 at 5 p.m. in the tennis pavilion. We will go over the team rules and answer questions. One-Week Pre Season Practice There will be practice with beginning Tuesday, May 30 through Friday, June 2 and after school from 4-5pm for players 12 & under and from 5-6pm for players over age 12. Please try to attend when you can. We will begin team try -outs and challenge matches during the week of June 5th. Challenge Matches We will be working on Challenge Matches May 30 thru June 2. All players will play each other within their age and gender group. The final day for finishing Pre-Season Challenge Matches will be May 30. The weekly Challenge Matches will be held on Wednesdays this year with the first one on June 14.
