4 Ría de Navia Asturias (ESP); 6 th of August General information about Navia Location Asturias-Oviedo (OVD) is the nearest airport (80 km on the motorway; trip time: 40 min.), with frequent daily links to Barcelona and Madrid airports and also some international flights Navia is a small town in northern Spain (Asturias region), on the Atlantic seaside. It is the economical centre of a flourishing area with a population of around The population pattern is geographically spread, thus the Navia urban core has inhabitants. During the working day, the size of the urban population swells to 12,000 with many people working in trade and leisure industries. The area is economically dynamic with activities based in the primary and secondary sectors which, in turn, imply a powerful local trade. In the primary sector, Navia is well known for its agricultural industry, corn, beans and milk production being important components. Navia s forestry se tor should also e e tio ed. In the secondary sector, there are very important factories: a cellulose pulp plant, a specialised shipyard, a ilk a d dairy fa tory, A general hospital which forms part of the Spanish National Health System is only at 2 km from Navia. It is a modern hospital, built in 1986 and recently refurbished. About the estuary The estuary is comprised of salt water which is always calm, not choppy and which filters two streams: 1) the river current, which flows continually to the sea; 2) the tide flows, coming from the sea in the rising part of the cycle and back to it when the tide goes down a global cycle of approx. 12 hours -6 going up and 6 down. The Leg will take place during the upcoming cycle, with the two streams mutually opposed. At the final part of the upcoming cycle (when the Leg has been programmed for) the resultant current is so weak that it comes almost to a standstill situation. During the race, the minimum depth along the course will be around 5 meters and the expected water temperature around 19/20 Celsius degrees.

5 Race info Please, check the diagrams in Annex I for the course plan, Annex II for the distances covered when passing the different buoys and Annex III for the competition and navigation lanes. Please note (see again the Annex I diagram) that the straight line from NW buoy to SW buoy leaves the MW reference buoy several meters away at the swimmers left side. Therefore the diagram in Annex II omits the indications of the covered distances when entering this sector (the corridor from NW buoy to SW buoy) of the circuit. CIRCUIT: As shown in Annex 1, the circuit is marked by four corners turning buoys (NE, NW, SW, SE), and two passing buoys (ME, MW). From the start line, swimmers should proceed to meet the circuit (blue line) and follow the ME NE NW MW SW SE route (a total of three laps) in a counter clockwise direction with all the buoys on his/her left side (yellow line). During the third lap, after turning around the SE buoy, the swimmer should swim into the inner harbour (red line). These six buoys define a rectangular zone (navigation lane; red area in Annex 3) with a width of 50 meters. Safety and control boats should always sail within the navigation lane. The main function of the paired buoys ME and MW is to guide the supporting boats to always keep themselves within the navigation lane. As for the swimmers, these are passing buoys that they have to leave also on his/her left side. There is also a feeding platform next to the SE buoy. START: A rope will be stretched in the dock (inner harbour) as marked in Annex 1. The start will be given with the swimmers in the water and holding to this rope. The water depth at this point is 5 meters. The start of the race will be signalled with a horn. After both starts e s a d wo e s, the rope will be removed. BUOYS: The buoys ME, NE, NW, MW, SW, SE will be yellow and cylindrical shaped in a vertical arrangement (height: 1,5m; width: 1,0m). The so called safety buoy (see it in Annex 1) is an auxiliary element to guide swimmers when, in the process of entering the circuit after the start, they pass next to the shipyard docked boats. FINISH CONTROL: All swimmers will have to touch the finish panel as shown on the picture (see right). The lane approaching the finish line will be delimited with two distinct lines. All swimmers will be provided with a transponder which should be fixed to their wrist. To register their finish, they must touch the panel with their wrist. Ría de Navia Asturias (ESP); 6 th of August SAFETY: Four safety boats will be moving up & down in the navigation lane serving men/women races. There will be a medical team on shore (organization logistic s center), staffed with doctors & nurses, and also an ambulance on site. Even then, we may not be able to guarantee your exact lodging choice. Thus bookings will be strictly dealt on a first come, first served basis. Palacio Arias is at walking distance (5/8 minutes) to/from the swimming pool. Training facilities At the swimming pool (a 25m x 12,5m pool, six lanes) Time schedule available to Delegations: 4 th of August: afternoon; 5 th of August: morning & afternoon; 6 th of August: from to am. At the estuary - Recommended time windows: August, 4 th : pm to pm (low tide: pm; high tide: pm) August, 5 th : pm to pm (low tide: pm; high tide: pm) For these periods, the organising committee will arrange the presence of safety boats at the training area.
