1 Up Hill & Down Vale NOVEMBER 2011 NEWSLETTER AIDA VALE ASTERS SWIMMING PRESIDENT S PROSE Looking back on October, the main outstanding thing for me has been the wonderful amount of rain we ve had so the Lake Leschenaultia should be full to overflowing! All we need now is for next week to be really hot. Everyone has been volunteering for assignments around the lake on the day which is great and takes the pressure of me, so please feel free to lend a hand. BUT, we also want you to swim in the event as well. For those new members who might not have done an open water swim, this one really is the best, an easy course around the shores of the lake, plenty of support kayaks and no biting creatures. The legends of the leeches really are legends. Bring a picnic or bbq lunch and have a great family day. We are chasing donations for our raffles which can be given to anyone on the committee or specifically Elaine Bourne. You can make a cash donation if you prefer and we will buy the items at the Lake on the 6 th be there!!! It was disappointing to have to cancel our 1500 mtr swim during the month but it would have been uneconomical and time wasting to hold an event for 5 visitors from other clubs plus a few pressed members. The rugby had nothing to do with it! On a social note our self-adopted member from Osborne Park club, Josh Hofer, rang to let me know he was one of a select few people to be presented to the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh on Thursday 27 th. This is to recognise his contribution to swimming for the disabled, plus he does have an Order of Australia. He hopes to come to our next Stubby Stakes to share his experience so we look forward to hearing from him. Even if you re not a Royalist, the Queen is pretty special and good luck to anyone sharing a snagger with her on the foreshore. On the travel front, welcome home to Lesley, who enjoyed a wonderful holiday in Bali, except for the earthquake which shook her up in more ways than one. The Borneo crew have returned, Kim reports having trained every day in the 10 lane 50mtr pool and he returned home fit enough to cycle from South Fremantle to Joondalup on Sunday to raise money for MS and Nulsen Haven. Well done! Lynne and Andrew Duncan are presently touring South America and are in the Andes at the fabled Macchu Piccu before heading to Argentina and Brazil bet Lynne s not doing any training! Whilst mentioning cycling, you will have received an about Scott Yaxley s latest epic bike ride from Esperance to Perth, again raising money for Teen Challenge check out for details. On the swimming scene, Ren lost his butterfly handicap championships last Monday night in a tightly fought event in which the judges were hard pressed to pick the winner, but Russel Fowler took out line honours for the event well done! The list of injuries and illnesses amongst members has thankfully eased, with the exception of Glad, who is waiting to recover from the dreaded lurgy so that she can have minor surgery. Good luck Glad, and we hope to see you at the Osborne Park BACC swim on the 27 th November! 3 2012 Membership Fees Masters Swimming will no longer accept club payments for the State or National components of the membership fee. From now on club members must pay these fees by credit or debit card on the Masters Website. The 12 month Membership Fee for 2012 remains unchanged at $90. Whilst Membership Fees should be paid by January 1st each year, the membership renewal facility is not available online until 1st December. Full instructions on how to access your record and pay the fees online are available on the club website at the address below You will need to obtain your username and password from the Masters website. Then you will be able to view the details held on record, and change your username and password if you wish to do so. The club website explains how to do it. If you are unable to use the internet for any reason to submit or renew your membership, please let me know and we can process the payment for you. Once you have paid the Clubs Online fees, you will need to pay the club component, $25, to the club in the usual way. As ever, our Life Members are not obliged to pay the club component. 4 LAKE LESCHENAULTIA 25 TH ANNIVERSARY SWIM It certainly doesn t feel like 25 years since we decided to run our own open water event at the beautiful Lake in Chidlow. Our very successful annual lake breakfast in March had been running for about 3 years. We would arrive around 9 am, set up camp on the far side of the lake and it was compulsory to have a swim across the lake before you could open your first champagne or beer of the day. Following the swim, bacon and eggs were cooked up on the bbq and we would settle in for a wonderful picnic day. We hired canoes and had challenges along the course of the lake and then it would be time for lunch! On a couple of occasions, when the weather was wonderful, we would stay for a bbq tea as well and the Ranger would let us lock the gate after we left! This required a supply run to the Chidlow store for extra food and drinks. Late in the afternoon of one of our breakfasts we talked about the open water events that some of us had competed in and thought it could be a great idea to hold our own swim at the lake. A small committee formed names escape me right now but I think Gary Bradley (now President of Claremont and on the board of Masters W.A) was involved along with our President at the time, Austin Caddy and the lake swim-around was born! Our first two years ran smoothly and were a great success, albeit with a small number of competitors (mainly club members). The committee decided to introduce our now famous T-shirts with the help of donations from a couple of sponsors. In return they had their details printed on the shirts. This exercise has continued successfully over the years with some sponsors helping out every year a gesture which is much appreciated by the club and provides the major part of our fundraising for the year. One year, a few families decided to camp overnight at the lake before the swim. We set up our tents in a howling gale on the Saturday afternoon. Di and Steve Cockman hadn t been camping together before and bought all their camping gear at K-Mart in Midland on the way up to the lake. They arrived with everything in boxes and proceeded to set up the purple passion tent around the campfire. It was such a good night that none of us wanted to get up in the morning and swim although sobering - was a definite low point of the weekend! There have been years when we have been worried about numbers leading up to the event, but every swim has been a success, thanks to all the helpful club members and visiting officials and the continuing support of competitors. The lure of a safe, fresh water swim and a family picnic has seen people from the flatlands head to the hills for something unique in WA open water events. Our swim-around has grown steadily over the past 24 years and is now one of the most popular small swims on the OWS calendar with an average of 100 swimmers competing each year. 5 "Sharing a Hills Christmas consists of churches, schools, businesses and shops who donate non perishable food and gifts which are packed and delivered by volunteers for people in the Shire of Kalamunda who are in need. Last year over 200 large parcels and 150 smaller ones were made up. All the local nursing homes are contacted and if they want to receive parcels these are made up specially for the people in the nursing homes who do not have anyone visiting. It is important that they know they are thought of. Referral letters are received through schools, churches, community agencies etc. and each form gives the number of people in a family, the ages of any children and their sex. These names and addresses are confidential. Packers only know that they are packing a parcel for say two adults (male or female) and how many children also ages and sex. Each parcel includes a present for each recipient receiving a parcel. All the work which involves sending out letters, collecting food, sorting the food and making sure there is enough of each item, sorting the presents and wrapping them and delivering the parcels is done by volunteers. Money donations are also welcome as there is always a shortage of some things and these can be purchased from the local stores. You will see donation boxes dotted around shops etc. in the Shire of Kalamunda. There will be a box at Maida Vale Pool for gifts and non perishable items. This year the dates for sorting, packing and delivering are Wed 14th, Thursday 15th and Friday 16th December. from 9 a.m. onwards. The Church of Christ, Miletti Road, Kalamunda is the premises being used as a great deal of space is needed for this If you are able to donate a few hours of your time on these dates you will be greeted with open arms. Outdoor Pool at Tuart College Cnr French and Hector Sts, Tuart Hill On Sunday 27 th November 2011 Warm up: 8.45 am for a 9.30 am Start Program of Events: m. Freestyle m. Individual Medley 3. 50m. Breaststroke 4. 50m. Freestyle 5. 50m. Backstroke 6. 25m. Butterfly 7. 4x50m. Mixed Medley Relay 8. 4x50m. Mixed Freestyle Relay The following clubs will be participating: Armadale, Belmont, Bold Park, Carine, Claremont, Gosnells Thornlie, Inglewood, Leisurepark, Maida Vale, Perth City, Riverton, Swan Hills and Whitford Swimmers may participate in three (3) events only and in the appropriate relays. Only one relay team per age group will count for points. All participating clubs please provide timekeepers and stopwatches. Entry Cost: $7.00 (payable at the gate) includes pool entry and lunch after the event As seating is limited, please bring a fold-up chair NB: Entries close on Sunday 20 th November, 2011 Please let Ren or Elaine know if you will be competing in this event And which events you will be swimming in! You have till the 20th November to make up your mind!
