5 Camp Programs T = Troop Sign up. If there is a cap on the number per block it will be designated net to the T. O = Open activity blocks will be offered during the week. * = This activity will take more than one afternoon block. Aquatics Open Swim - O Come on down and swim with the aquatics staff! K2 T(30)/O Climb the challenging floating mountain known as K2 here at Storer! Once you climb up you get the fun of sliding down! Because this is in such high demand we ask that units of 15 or less try and pair up with other units to block this off. All participants must be swimmers. Watermelon Tussle T(20) Come and play the tough game of watermelon tussle at Adams waterfront! Two patrols or two troops will face off and try and slip and slide a watermelon to their side of the water. *Watermelons not included, watermelon tickets can be purchased at the trading post. Open Boating T/O Head over to goose waterfront and take out some sailboats, kayaks, rowboats or canoes! Troops can also sign up to do canoe or kayak trips with our staff around goose pond! Canoes Swimmers may pair- up to take canoes out on Goose Pond. Kayaks Swimmers can cruise around Goose Pond at their leisure. Rowboats Beginners may use rowboats if accompanied by a swimmer. In and Out Canoe Race T In this wacky relay race, troops can race against each other or other troops. Whenever the whistle is blown the scouts need to get out or back into the canoe depending on their current position. Polar Bear Swim O Wake up early and come down to Adams Waterfront to go swimming! The polar bear swim is offered Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 6:30 AM, but you have to go all three mornings in order to get the Polar Bear Award! Tubing T(8) Swimmers can take a ride on a tube around Goose Pond while trying not to fall off! Mile Swim O This national awards if given to scouts and scouters who complete an incremental training program and swim a full mile. The prequalification training will take place during the 3 rd afternoon block. After completing the award, the mile swim patch is available for sale in the Trading Post. 5
6 BSA Lifeguard This is a week- long course for anyone aged fifteen or older interested in becoming a lifeguard. The BSA Lifeguard certification is equivalent to that received from the YMCA or Red Cross. Current CPR and First Aid Certification is required before arrival at camp. A CPR trainer may not be available for each week of camp so it is strongly recommended that anyone interested in this program come with prior certification. After completion of the program, the BSA Lifeguard patch will be available for purchase at the Trading Post. C.O.P.E. Project COPE Individual Sign Ups * The classic COPE program where Scouts get to eperience the full dose of COPE. They ll be challenged to develop leadership and problem solving skills through the Low Course while working together as a team, then take those skills and confidence onto the High Course. This program will take the first two afternoon blocks Monday through Thursday. Scouts who sign up for this program should be at least 13 years of age. Patrol COPE - T Perfect for Troops and Patrols who want to be pushed into that net step of teamwork and leadership. Or Troops and Patrols who want to come down and have tons of fun. This program is personalized to best suit the needs and goals of the group. Handicraft Survival Bracelet Making T/O Learn how to make the nifty and useful survival bracelets that will give you up to 10 feet of cord that will be useful in troubling situation! Ice Cube Candle Making T Come to Handicraft to make some cool looking candles using ICE CUBES! What s that all about!?!? Leather Slide Making T Make a memorable neckerchief slide out of leather and stamp and design it anyway you want! So you can finally have a neckerchief slide for when you are looking for one just before a meeting or court of honor! Graffiti Wall O Over in Handicraft we will have a wall of canvas to come paint, sign, and just epress your artwork on a big scale! Merit Badge Sewing T/O Still have that art merit badge in your pocket instead of on your sash? Still wearing your Second Class patch even though you are a Star Scout now?! Come to handicraft and learn how to sew on those badges! Patrol Flag Making T/O Show your patrol pride and come to handicraft and have your patrol make a flag together! Troop Sign Making T/O Show your troop sign and come to handicraft and make a troop sign to be hung in the Dining Hall so years from now you can remember your time at Storer! 6
7 Nature Swamp Romp - T This is messy muddy fun while still teaching the scouts about how naturalists survey bodies of water to determine if they are healthy. Rubber boots are highly recommended because otherwise shoes can and will be lost in the swamp! A nature staff member would lead a group of scouts (its best with no more than 10 scouts per team per iteration) through the swamp with a fine mesh net attached to doll rods as they skim the water and see what they find while getting pretty dirty. Then they eamine their nets and count up what they find. Worksheets will be provided with a way to figure out if the water is healthy or not. Scouts should have enough time budgeted for showers afterwards. Glacier Ice-cream of Doom - T It s essentially an ice- cream social where you take a few tubs of ice cream, oreo, m&m and other toppings (like worms) and spread them out on a cookie sheet. Then you release a large chunk of ice cream off a slope (tilt the cookie sheet) While the ice cream moves down the sheet staff can eplain Glacier Erratic to the scouts and possibly other things related to glaciers and geology. The bug hike T Scouts first take a hike down a short nature trail and observe different things quietly for self-reflection. Then they repeat the same trail only this time scouts are spaced out more and are told to take the same path they did before but this time they have to crawl on all fours or commando crawl on their belly. The change in height gives scouts a different perspective on the hike they take and then as a group are led through a guided discussion on what they saw and how it changed. Nature Games Zombie Tag T/O Blob tag T/O The bat and the bug T/O Scouts are put into a circle and someone volunteers to be a bat. They are then blindfolded and put into the center of the circle. Then scouts pass around a film canister (or something similar) with rocks, beans, rice, or anything else that would make a shaker sound. They each take turns shaking it while the bat try s to find them only using his ears and intuition. After the bat finds the shaker that person becomes the bat. Do this three or more times and then a nature staff member will guide a discussion on echolocation and how different animals adapt to their surroundings. Camouflage T/O A modified version of hide and seek. The seeker cannot move and loudly calls out Camouflage! which signals the other scouts to hide the seeker counts to ten for the first round, five the second round, and three the third round. The hiders must still be able to see the seeker (to prevent scouts from going too far away). When the seeker finishes counting he says Animals, sing me a song! the hiding scouts must make the loudest most obnoious animal sounds they can think of until a few scouts are found then the net round begins. After the game concludes a staff member would talk about what was easy for the seeker/hard for them and likewise for the hiding animals. Usually we talk about different clothing colors and how this relates to different pelts in the wild for camouflage. 7
8 The Golden Acorn Challenge - O A list of clues will be given to scouts where they must find the correct location and staff member that the clue leads them to. This year each clue will be attached to a staff member who will be given golden acorns in advance to give to scouts who properly complete the clues. Scouts may get the clues either Sunday night or Monday (until after dinner) and have the entire week to complete the challenge. A prize and (possibly?) camp wide game points will be awarded to the troop who complete the most clues by the end of the Games. A prize to the highest score will be given to a troop at closing ceremony. Scout Craft Catapult Building/ Storm the Castle T/O* For this the activity Scoutcraft will have a castle built and it will be the scouts mission during the program to take the castle down via catapult. Etreme Cooking Challenge T/O* Scout Craft will challenge a unit to create a meal or desert with the ingredients and utensils they provide. A troop can have two patrols challenge each other or two different troops can challenge each other! Realistic First Aid T/O* There will be victims that your troop will need to assess their injuries and then properly treat them before time runs out! SCOUTCRAFT s Paul Bunyan Award T/O* This is different from the Boy Scouts Paul Bunyan award. In this course you learn proper outdoorsman skills such as chopping wood, how to make flapjacks and proper beard maintenance. Realistic Search and Rescue O* In this scenario there could be one or more people lost or stranded in the woods and it will in the job the group of scouts to find them, indentify any problems, and then bring them back to main camp. Shooting Sports Archery Shoot T(32)/O Troops will be able to come and practice their archery skills Rifle Shoot T(16)/O Troops will find out who is the real sharp shooter is among them! Shotgun Shoot T(8)/O Scouts must be at least 13 to shoot shotgun. 8
