3 Powder Horn 2018 First Weekend - September 21-23, 2018 Second Weekend - October 5-7, 2018 Camp Durant - Carthage, NC The Powder Horn course is designed to help the troop, team, or crew by ex-posing Venturers, and adult leaders to safely conducted outdoor/ high-adventure activities of a fun and challenging natur The course pro an introduction to the resources needed to successfully lead youth through a program of outdoor adventure and is based upon giving participants an exposure to some outdoor/highadventure activities. The course presenters are expert consultants, from inside and outside of Scouting, in each outdoor high adventure activity. It is not a certification event for individual high adventure activities, but rather an overview of various disciplines. 4 3 Council Cuboree April 13-15, 2018 Registration Deadline: 3/30/18 Cub Shooting Sports Days November 11, 2017 March 10, 2018 September 8, 2018 November 10, 2018 Every Scout loves to spend a day on the range. This event is designed specifically for our Cub Scouts to experience the joys of shooting on the BB, Archery and Slingshot Ranges. Pick a time slot that is convenient for you, either 9-12 or 1-4. The ranges are run by trained BSA Shooting Sports instructors. Fees cover a patch and pin for each sport. Registration Fee: $15 per youth To register: Contact Alicia Embrey for more information at aliciam4@aol.com A fun weekend activity with an overnight camping experience provides the opportunity to spend some quality time with your son as he participates in a variety of activities including BB gun shooting, climbing wall, games and other activities in the outdoors. Bring your own camping equipment. Saturday lunch and dinner will be offered in the Grand Lodge for an extra fee. Registration Fee: $15 for Lions/Tiger/Wolf & Bear $ 25 for Webelos (this includes lunch) $ 10 for each Adult No Fees for Siblings To register: Opens 2/1/18 - Closes 3/30/18 For Questions - contact - Karen Goldstein - klgoldst@yahoo.com Occoneechee Council Outdoor Ethics Program Website: Facebook: Occoneechee Council Outdoor Ethics Outdoor Ethics Orientation Course This course introduces the concept of Outdoor Ethics to a group with little experience in outdoor ethics in a fun and engaging way. It should help youth and adults at all program levels understand the general principles behind Scouting s outdoor ethics program. This course is designed to get participants started on their adventures in Outdoor Ethics. Dates: Check the OC Outdoor Ethics website for dates/locations Outdoor Ethics Guide Course The Outdoor Ethics Guide is a junior leadership position which qualifies as a leadership position for Star, Life & Eagle rank advancement. While there is currently no required training for this position, this course is highly recommended as a basis of knowledge in order for the youth to better serve their unit. Dates: Check the OC Outdoor Ethics website for dates/locations Tread Trainer Course Tread Trainers have gone a step further and have decided they want to help others learn to be responsible stewards. They have taken a Tread Trainer course and can hold informational trainings and seminars for the BSA, general public or outdoor enthusiast groups. They can also represent Tread Lightly! At events like sportsmen s expos, OHV events and more. Dates: February 17, 2018 Leave No Trace Trainer Course The Leave No Trace Trainer course provides students an opportunity to develop a high level of understanding of the seven principals of Leave No Trace. Those who successfully complete the course will have the skills to conduct LNT educational programing to their own classes. Dates: April 6-8, 2018 and October 5-7,

5 Occoneechee Council s 15th Annual University of Scouting November 3, 2018 Wake Technical Community College Raleigh, NC If you are looking for some new ideas or need training for your Scouting position this is the event for you. The University of Scouting is a fun filled, hands-on training event and an opportunity to network with other Scouters. This one day training event is designed for ALL Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Sea Scout and Venture Leaders. In addition we have training opportunities for Venture youth and Boy Scouts 14 years and older in the Venture Youth College and the Sea Scout College. Colleges Offered - Cub Scout College Boy Scout College General Studies College Venture Youth College Sea Scout College Outdoor Ethics College For more information: Cub/Webelos Resident July 22-25, 2018 Registration Deadline: 7/1/2018 This is a multi-night summer camping experience filled with fun and adventure for Cub Scouts of all ages. Located at Occoneechee Scout Reservation on 2400 acres of majestic forest in Moore County. There s an unlimited supply of opportunities to make your stay an experience of a Activities include swimming, shooting sports, boating, knot & knife skills, arts & crafts, rock wall climbing, nature, camp games, hiking, outdoor skills, first aid and so much more. Registration F $100 per youth / $50 per adult To register: Webelos/OA Weekend March 16-18, 2018 Registration Deadline: 3/1/2018 This overnight camping opportunity allows our Webelos and Arrow of Light Scouts to experience what the Order of the Arrow is all about, service. The younger Scouts will get to experience Indian Dancing/Singing, crafts and even a POW WOW. Limited to 115 Webelos Registration Fee: $15 19 To Register: 4

7 Camp Durant Summer Camp Staff Join a dedicated family of over a hundred Scouts and Scouters in making Camp Durant home to Scouts from across the state for the summer. We re always looking for members to fill our positions for next summer and we hope you ll apply. Application Process - The application process is quick & easy. First, download and fill out the application. You must be 15 before the start of summer Camp. Mail the application to the address on the application. You will then need to attend one of our interview dates wearing a Class-A Uniform at the Raleigh Council Office. No appointment needed & interviews take 15 minutes. January 20, :00 AM to 1:00 PM February 3, :00 AM to 1:00 PM 17 Application Available at - campdurant.com/summer-camp/ Important Dates - Being part of our staff involves working for part of the summer. Morning & Afternoon sessions will be offered. If required, Reeves Ranges will be opened based on the number of participants registered for this event. All Firearms, ammunition & targets will be provided DO NOT BRING PERSONAL FIREARMS OR AMMUNITION! 8 National Youth Leadership June 30-July 8, 2018 Camp Reeves, Carthage, NC National Youth Leader Training (NYLT) is a co-ed program developed BSA for all youth in Ventur and Sea Scouts. It is designed to help Scouting s youth develop the confidence & knowledge to conduct the unit program, provide a clear understanding of team and personal development, and learn how they relate to leadership. Qualifications: 13 years of age or older First Class rank for Boy Scouts (or equivalent) Recommendation by Unit Leader Currently serving or likely to serve in a unit-level position of responsibility Minimum 2 previous long-term camping experiences Full knowledge of basic cooking, knots and lashings Prior completion of Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops or Crews is strongly recommended. Hope, West Virginia VenturingFest 2018 is a special Scouting event at the Summit Bechtel Reserve open to registered Venturers, Venturing-age Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts, Explorers and adult leaders. This six day high-adventure experience invites participants to explore the best that the Summit has to offer. As if the adrenaline pumping activities weren t enough, VenturingFest attendees will also get to jam out to concerts and meet new friends. Activities: Aquatics, Cope & Climbing, Outdoor Skills, Sustainability & Ecology, Shooting Sports, Wheeled Sports, Training Opportunities, Celebrations & Special Events What does it cost? 9 Venture Vortex Wood Badge May 4-6, 2018 Registration Deadline: 3/30/18 Spring Course Venture Vortex is a gathering of Crews and Ships in the Occoneechee Council and the Area to participate in high adventure activities, interact with other Crews and enjoy fellowship. While the theme of Vortex changes from year-to-year, youth come together to participate in various events designed around that year s theme. Registration Fee: $15.00 To register: Contact Ann Meyer for more information at: ameyer7@nc.rr.com 1st Weekend - April, nd Weekend - April, 27-29, 2018 Fall Course 1st Weekend - September 7-9, nd Weekend - September 28-30, 2018 Wood Badge is a hands-on leadership skills experience offered to adult volunteers of the Boy Scouts of America. Encompassing two three-day weekends, the course allows Scouters of all backgrounds to come together at camp to extend their understanding of the youth they lead, the adults they work with and to go to new levels of personal growth & learning. Many describe this course as their mountaintop experience in Scouting...the most fun they ve ever had as an adult Scouter! 10 Boy Scout Resident Camp Durant - Carthage Summer camp at Camp Durant is filled with fun and exciting adventure for Scouts of all ages. Some of the programs available while at Camp Durant for your new and veteran Scouts include: shooting sports, rock climbing and rappelling, canoeing, row boating, kayaking, swimming, life saving and lifeguard training, outdoor skills, hiking, nature, field sports and handicraft. We also offer over 55 merit badges and our Trailblazer program for first year A large variety of evening activities include Staff vs Camper Dodgeball and Staff vs Scoutmaster Softball. Your veteran Scouts may want to try one of our specialty programs like BSA Lifeguard, ATV or Climbing programs for a different experience while at summer camp. DON T MISS OUT! The 1st Annual Camp Durant Winter Blast is a great opportunity to work on merit badges and have fun. A total of 28 merit badge classes will be offered. All meals and cracker barrels will be provided Saturday through Monday. Registration Fee: $90 Scout / $50 Adult Registration Opens : October 2nd, 2017 Register at select Winter Camp Merit Badges offered: Archery, Nuclear Science, Chess, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the World, Climbing, Cooking, Electricity, Environmental Science, Emergency Preparation, First Aid, Finger Printing, Leather Work, Pioneering, Photography, Rifle Shooting, Safety, Shotgun, Soil & Water, Wilderness Survival, Wood Carving, Astronomy, Geocaching, Weather, Nature, Geology, Bird Study, Salesmanship. Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) will also be offered. Class is limited to 25 Adults. The cost is $50 and includes meals and a cabin assignment. 11 May 12th, 2018 Do a Good Turn Introduce Scouting to your Community in our First Annual Day of Service Youth across the state are teaming up to lead their communities in service by rolling up their sleeves and joining in a carefully orchestrated Day of Service. On May 12th, 2018 central North Carolina youth members of the Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of the USA, 4-H, FFA and the YMCA of the Triangle are teaming up to serve their communities in a first-of-it s-kind cooperative Day of Service in central North Carolina. Members of the organizations across the state have signed up to meet the event s goal of over 100,000 hours of community service. Summit Trek Weeks 1-5 of Summer Camp James C. Justice Summit Bechtel Reserve Beckley, West Virginia Registration Deadline: June 1, 2018 This program allows Scouts, Venture & Sea Scouts to spend the week at the newest BSA High Adventure Base, The Summit. Occoneechee Council is one of 4 Council s who has partnered with The Summit to bring your Scout a week of Summer Camp. They will experience canopy tours, white water rafting, shooting sports, BMX biking and so much more. Our partnership makes us able to bring you this option for Summer Camp at a greatly reduced rate. Take advantage and let your Scout have a once in a lifetime experience at The Summit. Registration Fee: $550 To register & for more information: Planning for this event began in May 2017, and since then individual units and chapters of each organization have been working to identify projects and secure the volunteer power necessary to see their plans succeed. By working together to plan and execute this event, members of each organization are proving passion for service and love for communities can cross all barriers and help develop stronger bonds in the communities in which they live, work, grow & play.
