Women's Center of Wake County 112 Cox Avenue Raleigh, NC Scouting for Food Service Hours Needed Across Occoneechee Council Recently in the news, a story came across: With empty shelves, Salvation Army suspends food pantry. Did you know that many of the emergency food banks are not able to keep up with the demand? Your units can help across the Council by keeping a schedule of Scouting for Food every year. Some units have a continual Scouting for Food event encouraging Scouts to bring a can of food to their meetings or holding annual Scouting for Food Drives. Food drives help the community feed those who are less fortunate and ensures donations actually go towards feeding needy people. Please plan to hold a Scouting For Food Drive soon! Food from your food drive can be donated to a Food Bank/Pantry of your choice Mark your calendars NOW! Save this important date! Summer plans are being finalized, Blue and Gold Banquets, camporees, and Courts of Honor are wrapping up. A much-deserved leader rest is upon us. But what are you going to do when September rolls around and you need to fire up the volunteer engine for another nine months of Scouting? All those young faces looking to you for enthusiasm, guidance, and fun from where will you draw the energy to take your unit program to the next level? Two words: Wood Badge! Send us your Venturing/Sea Scout News and Photos Check out the latest issue of at You are just in time to sign up for Wood Badge S , which will be held September and October 1-3, 2015 at Camp Durant. The cost is only $225 and it includes all your meals, t-shirts, scarves, and a hat - plus education and friendships that will last a lifetime. Hurry and submit your application. The mailing of invitation letters will begin shortly, and letters are sent in waves as we work to create a diverse Wood Badge course that accommodates Scouters across all Scouting programs and Districts. 5 Send us your Troop News and Photos Troop 820 Service Project Scouts from Troop 820 in Chapel Hill assisted the Recreational Therapy Department of Murdoch Developmental Center in Butner, North Carolina by silk screening hundreds of t-shirts for the Murdoch Center's Annual Arts Festival. Murdoch Center is one of North Carolina's three regional centers and provides residential services for over 500 individuals with disabilities. This was the eleventh year that Troop 820 has assisted with this project. The Scouts were each given one of the t-shirts they made. Info on pages Occoneechee Scout Sign May 2015 Vol 11 #5 5

6 OA NEWS Special thanks to David Crowley, Jim Saunders, Randall Goodman, Kevin Blackwood and Ranger John for their hard work in getting this cabin started. Several workdays are still available for anyone to help with interior finishes, painting and landscaping. If you are interested OA Service Project Responding to the ever-increasing demand for summer camp staff housing, volunteers from the Order of the Arrow raise the walls on another staff cabin near the entrance to Camp Durant. The summer camp attendance continues to grow every year and in 2015 the camp staff will increase by another 4 members as well. To provide the best possible experience for our staff members, another 4 person cabin will take it s place in Lady Land, near the climbing tower. Modeled after the proven design in the rest of the staff village, the cabin will feature 2 bunks, a private deck and entrance, thermal pane windows and air conditioning. 7 Occoneechee Lodge Names Centurions Please take the time to recognize and congratulate these individuals for their contributions and achievement in Scouting. The Centurion Award aims to highlight Hometown Heroes, or Arrowmen who have meaningfully contributed to the forming, maturing, and ongoing operational excellence of their local Council s lodge and who, in doing so, inspired others to follow in their footsteps. The Occoneechee Lodge accepted nominations for this award through January 31st 2015 and a selection committee made up of youth and adult members of the Lodge made recommendations to the National Committee. Recipients were nominated for their contributions when they were a Youth or Adult. These individuals will have the opportunity to be recognized at a special dinner during the National Order of the Arrow Conference in August of this year. We are pleased to announce the approval and selection as the Occoneechee Lodge Centurions! Wood Badge is the premier advanced hands-on leadership skills experience offered to adult volunteers of the Boy Scouts of America. Started by Sir Robert S. Baden Powell, Wood Badge's primary purpose is to strengthen Scouting in our units, districts, and local council. Encompassing two three-day weekends, the course allows Scouters of all backgrounds to come together at camp to extend their understanding of the youth they lead, the adults they work with, and to go to new levels of personal growth and learning. Many describe this course as their mountaintop experience in Scouting the most fun they ve ever had as an adult Scouter. Wood Badge is open to all registered adult Scouters who have completed the basic training requirements for their primary Scouting position. There is no minimum years of experience you must complete in order to attend Wood Badge. In fact, the earlier in your Scouting career that you attend Wood Badge, the sooner you can put those leadership skills to work in delivering the best Scouting program to the youth you serve. The course size is limited to only 48 participants and spaces fill up quickly. Join us in 2015 at Wood Badge S ! 13 Qualifications Be a registered adult in the Boy Scouts of America Have not previously completed 21 st Century Wood Badge Completed the training requirements for your Scouting position, including any applicable outdoor skills training (A) Be capable of functioning safely in an outdoor environment Have a current Annual BSA Health & Medical Record, Parts A, B & C ( Safety/ahmr.aspx) Be invited to attend Wood Badge S Submit all fees, medical forms and paperwork by July 17, (A) Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills is a required prerequisite course for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters, Varsity Coaches and Assistants, and Venturing Advisors and Co-Advisors of crews with an outdoor program. All other participants are encouraged to complete the Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills training before attending a Wood Badge course, but it is not required. (B) The BSA National Office requires that Wood Badge courses be structured by invitation only so as to ensure that the courses reflect as wide an array of diversity as possible, including program diversity (Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Venturing) and geographic diversity (all of the districts our council serves). Fees The all-inclusive fee for this course is $225, if paid in full by July 17, The fee is $250 if paid after July 17, NO REFUNDS AFTER August 14, If you are seeking financial assistance, consider contacting these resources: Your unit's budget for leadership development Your employer's continuing education policies Leaders of community, civic, or religious organizations to which you belong Your district training chairman Time Commitment Six days in two 3-day segments from Friday (7:00 AM) through late Sunday afternoon, and a patrol meeting between the two weekends, at a time and location of your patrol's choice. Full attendance at all aspects of the course is mandatory. This is a National requirement that cannot be waived. What are the learning objectives of Wood Badge? As a result of attending you will be able to: View Scouting globally, as a family of interrelated value based programs that provide age-appropriate activities for youth Recognize today's leadership concepts utilized in corporate America that are relevant to our values-based movement Apply the skills you learn as a member of a successful working team Revitalize your commitment by sharing in an inspirational experience! What is a Wood Badge Ticket? The Wood Badge ticket represents your commitment to complete a set of five significant goals, which relate to your primary Scouting position, that can be attained within 18 months. These goals, which you develop during the course, give you the opportunity to practice and demonstrate a working knowledge of the leadership skills presented during the course. Other important information On the first weekend, you will live in cabins with bunks. On the second weekend, you will enjoy a back country experience for which a tent, sleeping bag and backpack are needed; don t buy them borrow!
