NC811 Presents Safety Community Service Award to Graham Walston Cub Scout Fun Starts Here! What Are Our Cub Scout Packs Doing? Tell us about your ceremonies, AOL, camping, community service, special activities, field trips, etc. Send us an article with pictures. Share your STORY GREENSBORO, NC (June 28, 2016) NC811 recognizes young adults from organizations such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H, FFA, etc. for considering safe digging practices when they conduct a community service project. The award can be earned by completing a project where digging will take place and a call is made to 811 to have the underground utilities located. Once the project is completed, an application is submitted for consideration along with a copy of the locate ticket from calling 811. Striking a utility line while digging can lead to injury, penalties, repair costs, and inconvenient outages. Every six minutes an underground utility line is damaged because someone decided to dig without first calling 811. Graham Walston is a freshman at North Johnston High School and a member of BSA Troop-381 located in Wilson, NC. At the beginning of this year, Graham began his plan to develop, and provide leadership to a Occoneechee Scout Sign August 2016 Vol 12 #08 6

service project in hopes of reaching his goal of Eagle Scout. After months of preparation that included raising funds for the project, calling 811 to locate underground utilities, coordinating the installation of a flag pole and surrounding landscaping, the project has been completed. Graham installed the flagpole and landscaping at Corinth Holder High School soccer field where his dad coaches and teaches. He hopes to complete all his requirements of obtaining the Eagle Scout Award within the next month. Byron Kilpatrick, Scoutmaster stated, "Graham serves as a Senior Patrol Leader. He leads scout meetings, provides guidance to the troop and is involved with their training. He is a fine young man and will go far in his future aspirations." Rushing-NC811 Education Manager. To be considered for a Safety Community Service Award, visit About NC811 Since 1978 North Carolina 811 has provided you a fast and easy communications link with your local utility providers. You give us information about your excavation, we transmit the information to the utilities and then they send out locators to mark your underground lines for FREE. So remember, call 811 or three working days before you plan on digging. Ns&feature=youtu.be On Tuesday, June 21, 2016, NC811 presented a safety community service award package that included a service award ribbon for his roop, service award patches to those that volunteered and a service award marker to be placed at the project location to highlight their commitment to damage prevention. "The goal of the NC811 Safety Community Service Award is to distinguish dedicated young men and women for their diligence in safely completing community projects by digging safely. This is truly the type of Excavator that NC811 is looking for: The commitment to making the Call to 811, Waiting the required time, Respecting the Marks, and Digging Safely, stated Ann Troop 500: A Tribute to Scoutmaster Bob Kibbe A tribute to Bob Kibbe, Scoutmaster of Troop 500 in Wake Forest, North Carolina was held June 20, Bob Kibbe was the Scoutmaster at Troop 500 from 2005 till 2016 when he decided to turn over the duty of Scoutmaster to Dan Gorski. Bob has been an inspiration to many couts and leaders in his tenure as Scoutmaster at Troop 500. Bob first came to Troop 500 in 1999 and shortly after that the Scoutmaster of Troop 500, Blair Bost asked Bob to start a new Troop, Troop 588 in Youngsville. Bob Kibbe was the Scoutmaster at 588 for 5 years, but the Troop did not grow and so Bob returned to Troop 500 and became the Scoutmaster in Occoneechee Scout Sign August 2016 Vol 12 #08 7

Bob Kibbe on the left, Jim Crawford, Troop Committee Chair, center and Dan Gorski, New Scoutmaster present Bob a picture signed by all Scouts and friends of Bob attending his tribute. What can you say about Bob Kibbe, a man who epitomizes what Scouting is about? Bob lives his life according to the Scout oath and law and sets the example of what a Scoutmaster is. Troop 500 is truly a boy led Troop thanks to Bob. He has guided and helped Scouts become better citizens who can go out into the world and make an impact on their community and nation. There are 57 Eagle Scouts to Bob s credit and probably the best accomplishment is Bob s two sons, Jared and Chad achieving their Eagle. Bob has inspired many Scouts to become dedicated citizens to our country and has shown these Scouts the road to manhood. There is a statue at Philmont called the Road to Manhood- a figure of a Boy Scout standing dressed in a traditional Scouting uniform of a shirt, tied handkerchief, shorts, and tassel high socks and shoes. He wears a wide brimmed hat and carries a knapsack on his back. He holds a walking stick out to his side with the proper right hand and hold onto the knapsack s strap with the proper left hand. His proper left foot is placed upon a rock in front of him-this is Bob Kibbe! Jim Crawford presenting Bob Kibbe with Statue of Road to Manhood Bob Kibbe has been an inspiration for guiding young people becoming successful men and so Troop 500 presented Bob with a statue of Road to Manhood for his wonderful dedication to all those who knew Bob. Bob will now take the time to ride on his Harley and spend time with his wonderful wife, Trude and three children. Occoneechee Scout Sign August 2016 Vol 12 #08 8

OA NEWS 3 rd Annual Occoneechee Lodge Trade-O-Ree August 26 27, 2016 Save the Date This summer people from all over North Carolina will descend on our Camp Durant for a Trade-O-Ree in the Grand Lodge! What s a Trade-O-Ree you ask? Well unlike the National Jamboree, NOAC and Conclave, where it is a Trade Only event, a Trade-O-Ree is a fun time where Scouts and Scouters are buying, selling, and trading patches. So you say I have never been to a Trade-O-Ree and what should I expect? The best way to explain it is that people from all around the State and some out of state folks will rent tables to display their patches for sell and trade. You can walk around and visit with each table renter to see if they have anything that you need for your patch collection or just a cool patch that you want. If you are in need of a certain Council or Lodge patch you are almost guaranteed to find it at this Trade- O-Ree and if not, the fellowship at these events is awesome! If you have patches that you would like to sell, tables are available for rent in two ways. A full 12 table is $20 and if you only need a half table (6 ) the fee is $13. Need a cabin to rest your weary head for the night? Cabins are available for $25 for the night!! We ve tried to make registration for tables and cabins easy by allowing you to pay online at: trade-o-ree Paper registration is also available utilizing the Trade-O-Ree.pdf registration form. And what would a Trade-O-Ree be without food? There will be 3 meals available, Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast and Saturday lunch all prepared by our wonderful Lodge 104 Cook Crew. We ve made this easy so that you never have to leave camp! Purchase meals individually or buy a complete meal ticket.

Snacks will be available too for those inbetween meal hunger pains. Admission to the event is FREE! You do not have to rent a table just to stroll around, look and trade with the vendors. Bring your stuff down and trade with the vendors for that patch you ve been looking for! Need an event for the Troop, Pack or Crew? This is the perfect place to see lots of happy smiles! Occoneechee Lodge will also have the Trading Post open in case you need to buy additional memorabilia to trade or just take some home. Got questions? You may contact: Greg Grimes, Trade-O-Ree Adviser: ggrimes104@embarqmail.com or Jackson Woody, Trade-O-Ree Chair: jackson.woody10@gmail.com So save that August th date!! 18 S Wood Badge is a hands-on leadership skills experience offered to adult volunteers of the Boy Scouts of America. Encompassing two three-day weekends, the course allows Scouters of all backgrounds to come together at camp to extend their understanding of the youth they lead, the adults they work with, and to go to new levels of personal growth and learning. Many describe this course as their mountaintop experience in Scouting the most fun they ve ever had as an adult Scouter. What past attendees have said about Wood Badge: At last a training that teaches skills I can use immediately in my troop and even at work -Scoutmaster, Baden Powell District I thought Wood Badge was for Scoutmasters. Little did I know how much I could learn, or how much I could grow as a person and as a female leader, through Wood Badge. There are so many ways I can help in Scouting, and now I feel empowered to do it! -Pack Training Chair, Crosswinds District Great Boy Scouts earn their Eagle. Great Boy Scout leaders earn their Wood Badge beads. -Troop Committee Member, Three Rivers District I felt like I was a scout, learning and having fun at camp. What an awesome experience. -Assistant Scoutmaster, Cape Fear District If you can handle a crew of Scouts in the woods, you can handle Wood Badge. It's the best self-challenge experience there is. -Crew Advisor, Tuocs District S Occoneechee Scout Sign August 2016 Vol 12 #08 18
