ABOUT MELBOURNE VICENTRE SWIMMING CLUB Melbourne Vicentre Swimming Club (MVC) is one of the highest achieving and most successful swimming clubs in Australia. MVC was formed in 1988 following the amalgamation of Melbourne Aquatic and ACI Vicentre swimming clubs. It is affiliated with Swimming Victoria, the peak body for swimming in the state, and Metro District South. MVC amalgamated with Malvern Swimming Club Inc. in MVC has a strong culture of high performance. As illustrated by its Hall of Fame the Club has developed many swimming champions that have represented Australia at Olympics, World Championships and Commonwealth Games. The culture of high performance continues in 2017/18 with three current swimmers Mack Horton, Kotuku Ngawati and Daniel Cave achieving national representation for the upcoming World Championships. The Club enjoys a partnership with one of the world's foremost sporting facilities, the Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre, and also runs a junior program at Glen Iris. MVC employs a team of highly qualified and experienced coaches. The MVC squad program is comprehensive providing for competitive swimmers from eight years to elite international athletes and on to adult squads for swimmers enjoying a mix of competitive and social swimming. MVC operates Melbourne Aquatic Learn-to-Swim and Water Safety (MAQ) for beginners from age three to swimmers competent in all four strokes ready to progress to the MVC squad program. 4 Itoman Swim School Group For over 30 years MVC has had a sister-club association with the Itoman Swim School Group from Japan. Each year MVC hosts a representative Itoman team during the Victorian Championships, billeting 8-10 swimmers and supporting Itoman coaching staff throughout the Championships. In 2017 Itoman will host a team of MVC junior swimmers to attend the Itoman Invitational Age Championships. 3. MISSION & VISION Mission Statement Empowering swimmers to be champions in life Vision To lead the swimming community through successful partnerships, participation, growth and performance excellence. We aim to foster good citizenship and the capacity in every individual to reach their full potential in the sport of swimming and in life within a supportive environment for the swimmers and their families. 4. 5 5. MEMBER SUPPORT AND GOVERNANCE MVC aims to provide the best environment to support the development of swimmers to their full potential. The Club has a number of policies which aim to facilitate a supportive, caring and inclusive environment for all members. Such policies can be located on the website, or contact the Office. If any member has any concerns please let the Club know. All issues will be responded to quickly with respect and support. Grievance Process Member concerns should initially be directed to your Squad Coach. If the issue is not able to be resolved satisfactorily, or you would like further advice or support, please arrange a time to discuss with CEO Damien Arnold ceo@vicdentre.org.au or Head Coach Craig Jackson craigj@vicentre.org.au. Club policies and Frameworks Melbourne Vicentre is committed to ensuring the Club is fully compliant, well controlled and best practice in its operations. It fully supports the Swimming Australia and Swimming Victoria frameworks, particularly those involving child safe initiatives and inclusion. All policies are available on the website HERE. 6. ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE MVC is governed by a Board of Directors elected from the membership at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). 6 7. MEMBERSHIP & SQUAD FEES Membership is renewed annually on 1 July. All squad swimmers at MVC are required to join as members of the Club. A range of membership options are available. Membership includes registration with Swimming Victoria, enabling swimmers to participate in competition, and a compulsory insurance component. The Club requires at least one parent to also join where the swimmer is 15 years and under. Swimmers must be financial MVC members to participate in the MVC Squad Program. Squad Fees Squad fees are calculated as an annual amount and, generally, paid via monthly instalments. MVC accepts direct debit or standing credit card payments only. Squad fees: Payable in advance and due on the first of each month Annual discount - 5% where full annual fee is paid in advance Family discount - 5% for two or more squad members Include an allowance for prescribed squad breaks Include MSAC entry if applicable Prescribed Swimmers are required to take breaks totaling at least four weeks at specified times during the year. Complete information for each squad, including weekly timetables, squad breaks, training cycles and targeted meets can be found at Appendix A. DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY Melbourne Vicentre squad structure provides a comprehensive swimming program that will provide opportunities for all swimmers, from pre-development to elite international athletes, to the reach their full potential. This will be achieved through: an innovative structure utilising the benefits of a co-coaching/shared coaching model high quality, experienced and dynamic coaches a caring environment for all swimmers, their families and their individual needs flexibility to accommodate changing demands of swimmers, including study a club culture promoting friendship and embracing success at all levels MVC Handbook Page 6
7 Squad coaching In MVC s model of shared coaching, many squads will include some shared sessions with the squad above and below. For example, National Performance will share some sessions with Podium Performance and some with National Age. All squads will still have the majority of their sessions as standalone. Expectations of the shared coaching model will include consistency in coaching, shared training programs and interaction with squads. At times the squad may include varying sets that may mix up squads and lanes. Head coach, Craig Jackson, will lead & direct the coaching team. 9 10. COMMUNICATION Information about the club, including regular news updates, is available on the Melbourne Vicentre website and via Facebook. Regular MVC communication will be through the App Team App. All members are recommended to download Team App to your smart phone to ensure that they are kept up to date. Additional information is provided via: Member information nights, including new member nights Noticeboards on pool deck at MSAC and Glen Iris Parent representative group, to provide squad related information MVC website - Resources Communication is a key priority for the Club. Members will be notified of all such initiatives. Contact with your Coach Swimmers meet regularly with their coach to review progress, establish goals, identify areas of focus and discuss meets/events to enter. Parents are welcome to meet with the coaches to discuss their child s progress, or any swimming related matter. If you wish to discuss a matter with a coach please contact the coach to make an appointment. is the preferred method of initial contact with coaches. Regular updates from the coaches will be communicated through Team App. Parents are asked to not approach a coach during training and to remain off the pool deck area at all times. 11. CONDUCT MVC is an inclusive, supportive and caring Club. It expects all members to behave with respect to all, consistent with the values of the Club. Where inappropriate behaviour is identified MVC will respond with appropriate measures. In serious or willful misconduct the Club may terminate membership. 12. UNIFORM It is a condition of membership that swimmers wear uniform as directed. Uniform can be purchased from the office. A summary of compulsory and optional items is listed on the website HERE. 10 13. COMPETITION This handbook contains details of competitions that members of each squad are expected to enter. The competitions listed in your squad groups are a minimum level of meets. With consultation with your coach additional competitions may be added. Entries In most cases swimmers are responsible for their own entries and entry fees. Entry/payment is normally online, using the swimmer s individual user name and password (generated during membership registration). At relevant competitions Relay Only swimmers must enter themselves online by selecting the relay swimmer option from the event listing. MVC will lodge entries for relay teams at identified meets and covers the cost of these entries. Teams will be selected according to the MVC Relay Policy. Ancillary Services at Australian Championship Competition The provision of ancillary services (physiotherapist/massage therapist) ensures MVC athletes are in the best condition to perform at peak level during Australian Championship competition. A roster system ensures services are available to all athletes. At times preference will be given to athletes who are competing in finals or those managing injury. Team Managers During Competition, where MVC provides Team Managers, the Team Manager will be the liaison point between coaches and all other persons other than MVC athletes. Parents are asked to contact the Team Manager with any queries. Timekeeping at Swimming Victoria and Metro District South Competitions Swimming Victoria (SV) and Metro District South (MDS) conduct competitions throughout the year. It is a condition of MVC membership that swimmers, or their representative, will assist as timekeepers at SV and MDS meets entered by the swimmer. MVC Competitions MVC conducts a minimum of four swim meets each year which are a great opportunity to race and are also a major club fundraising activity. In 2017/18 the Club will be sharing a meet with Traralgon Swimming Club and one with Bendigo East Swimming Club. A critical component of running a swim meet is the sharing of tasks in preparation and on the day. Members will be asked to assist in tasks such as time keeping, marshalling and catering. Members will be asked to volunteer via on line functionality prior to the meet. All support is appreciated. MVC Handbook Page 10
11 General Competition Guidelines Swimmers should aim to arrive at the competition venue 90 minutes before their first event or at the beginning of warm up if swimming in early events. Swimmers should warm up 1 hour before their first race or according to coach instructions Swimmers should talk to their coach before and immediately after each race Parents wishing to talk to coaches should do so before or after the meet Parents and swimmers should ensure they treat all Coaches, Officials, Venue Staff, Club members, and competitors with courtesy and respect Drug Testing The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) is a government statutory authority whose mission is to protect Australia's sporting integrity through the elimination of doping. The ASADA website includes a checking tool to verify the status of substances/medications and a detailed explanation of the testing process. The Prohibited List is updated annually, coming into effect on 1 January of that year Athletes can be randomly selected for testing at any time and should familiarise themselves with the procedure Doping regulations do not allow ignorance about a medication as an excuse or justification Drugs, medications and substances listed on ASADA s website are brand-name products sold in Australia. Avoid using any overseas product ASADA cautions athletes about the use of sports supplements as the contents can vary from batch to batch and may contain prohibited substances. Athletes who take supplements are at risk of committing an inadvertent antidoping rule violation. Supplements Swimming Australia advises the following: Athletes should focus on a well-planned training program that develops good technique, skill and fitness, supported by adequate nutrition and recovery practices Focusing on sound nutrition and recovery practices will give swimmers a better platform for performance than supplements Swimmers aged under 18 years should not use supplements unless specifically recommended by a sports physician/doctor, sports dietitian or sports physiologist Parents and swimmers should familiarise themselves with the following websites: Swimming Australia, Swimming Victoria, ASADA, MVC Handbook Page 11

Physio s Helen Walker, Andrew Cameron & Anne-Marie Montgomery are our preferred Physiotherapy healthcare professionals. Morning Sessions at Glen Iris Swimmers arriving for the morning sessions at Glen Iris are asked to be mindful that Grandview Road is a residential street. Please keep noise to a minimum. If using the staff car park please ensure your car is moved to the street by 7:15am. Following morning training sessions swimmers should be picked up in Ranfurlie Crescent to avoid dangers associated with exiting through a car park when school staff are arriving.
