8 WINTER TRAINING TRIP Each winter break, Northwestern takes a training trip. This year, the Wildcats visited Phoenix, Ariz. In 2014, Northwestern traveled to Phoenix, Ariz., to enjoy sand, sun and seriously intense training in preparation for the second half of the year. In between two-a-day workouts and fun team-building contests, the Wildcats caught some rays and even spent the extended time to bond as a team away from campus. NU also dove headlong into area community service opportunities, volunteering throughout the area. Check out Northwestern s experiences with pictures of the trip all over this page.

9 BREASTSTROKE4BREASTCANCER Northwestern s women s swimming and diving put together one of the most impressive student-athlete community initiatives in Northwestern history in October of 2013, holding the second annual Breaststroke4BreastCancer that raised over five figures in donations for local cancer research. Spearheaded by seniors Megan Goss and Jackie Powell and her teammates, the Wildcats signed up over 150 swimmers to compete in relay teams for one hour of swimming. The squads were comprised of fellow students, student-athletes, NU faculty and staff, swimming alumni and local community members. With lively music, fun and games, the hour long Breaststroke event was such a smashing success that NU more than doubled its fundraising goal heading into the day. ONE SPECIFIC BREASTSTROKE STORY Northwestern senior Becca Soderholm invited one of her professors, Joan Zielinski, to speak at the event. Prof. Zielinski was a breast cancer survivor who gave an impassioned speech about the importance of regular check ups and awareness. Sadly, Prof. Zielinski passed away unexpectedly at her home on Dec. 13, 2012, just two months after attending the event. A marketing professor in the Kellogg School of Management, Zielinski had previously led a very successful fundraising effort for the March of Dimes in 2005.

10 NORRIS AQUATICS CENTER The Dellora A. and Lester J. Norris Aquatics Center includes a 750,000-gallon, 50-meter-by-25-yard pool with movable walls that run on a track system, enabling the pool to be custom-fitted. The complex, which includes an innovative heat recycling system, also features an electronic scoreboard and seating for 800 spectators. The facility also includes the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion and the Ivan Combe Tennis Center, located adjacent to the Norris Aquatics Center. The sports pavilion features a jogging track, three basketball courts, four racquetball and three squash courts, a weight room and lounge areas. The tennis center features six indoor tennis courts. Large windows on the running track provide a view of picturesque Lake Michigan. Large windows also overlook the pool from a workout room and a treadmill area in the main Sports Pavilion area. The facility also features an outdoor patio and sundeck that overlook the beach and Lake Michigan. The aquatics center has been the site of numerous competitions, including the United States Swimming Elite National training camp and 1999 s Swim Meet of Champions featuring the USA National Team against the Big Ten All-Stars. The facility also is the home of NASA Wildcat Aquatics, an age-group swimming club with youth members all the way up to Masters competitors.
