On Saturday 6 th June 30 STARplex swimmers aged 12 and over competed in a range of events including both sprint and long distance swims, with the ultimate challenge being the 1500 metre freestyle. The meet was a great success for the home club with swimmers winning 59 medals, making 39 PBs and achieving 15 new times. Perpetual trophies for the fastest male and female 400 IM swimmer of the day went to Kate Giersch and Bradley Grimes, both of Playford Aquatic Club. One of the highlights of the day was Coach Alex, who lost a bet with his squad, fulfilling the debt by swimming the 100 & 200 fly, 800 and 1500 freestyle. Alex, who by his own admission has not raced anything longer than a 100 in over 5 years, completed all these mammoth swims in fine style and earning the applause of the spectators and swimmers alike. Thinking that nothing would top Coach Alex s swims, Head Coach Steve and Cooch Craig proceeded to challenge the swimmers to a medley relay race after the official meet had closed. Steve lead off in fine style with his backstroke (although the turn was a bit dodgy) followed by Coach Cam in breaststroke and Coach Alex in fly (ring-ins since they still both compete!) and Cooch Craig rounding out with freestyle (and Cam doing a fifth leg as freestyle to cover extra numbers in the swimmer relays). Congrats to the Coaches on their fine effort with Cam bringing it home to secure a win. I think that the swimmers were less disappointed with their loss than having to admit that Coach Steve did alright and Cooch Craig had a decent freestyle. There are videos of their swims on the STARplex You- Tube page. Day two of the carnival on Sunday 7 th June saw a chance for the 11&under swimmers to show their style. STARplex swimmers secured 21 medals, 18 PBs and 2 new times. It also provided a great opportunity for senior swimmers to assist in the running of a meet by taking on official duties, everything from marshalling to inspector of turns and judge of stroke (which was proclaimed by a certain swimmer to be the most boring job ever no future white shirt for you!). We also introduced Come and Try swims into the junior program which again were a great success attracting 20 swimmers to have a go. Come and Try s will again be featured in all of next year s carnivals and Club Championships. Many thanks to all the club families who assisted in amy way over the two days to make another fantastic June long weekend carnival. P A G E 2 Long Distance Time Trials The club hosted an inaugural joint club Long Distance Time Trial swim meet on Saturday 13 June between STARplex Swim Club and Norwood Swim Club.

The pool management agreed to opening the pool at 5am and the newly formed Swimmers Social Committee organized a BBQ cooked breakfast.

2 P A G E 2 Long Distance Time Trials The club hosted an inaugural joint club Long Distance Time Trial swim meet on Saturday 13 June between STARplex Swim Club and Norwood Swim Club. Coaches from both clubs came up with the idea, date and the events list, and the STARplex Swim Club Committee quickly took up the reins and organized it at very short notice. The pool management agreed to opening the pool at 5am and the newly formed Swimmers Social Committee organized a BBQ cooked breakfast. 21 swimmers from squads took up the challenge with a choice of only 4 grueling events 200 butterfly, 400 medley, 800 freestyle and 1500 freestyle. 60 swimmers travelled up in a bus from the Norwood club arriving at 5.15am for warm up before the swimming started at 6am. Due to great organization we were able to obtain approval from Swimming SA who sent a referee, Dr Phil Bowen, who ensured that the meet met the standards required to use the times as official qualifying times. As a result many swimmers swam these races for the first time and achieved times to qualify to swim at the State Championships being held in July. Norwood coach Sean Curtis said A big thankyou to STARplex and all the Norwood parents who got up very early to allow these trials to take place. It was very well organized and the swimmers had a lot of fun. STARplex Head Coach Steve Garner said It was great to see that we could pull this together so quickly and so well, and it bodes well for hosting similar events with other clubs in the future. It s a great opportunity for our swimmers to push past their comfort zones and try something different without the pressure of a competitive environment. We had a fantastic night at the Club prize giving celebrating the wonderful achievements of our club members, then followed by our own great Club Carnival where we had some awesome results especially with the coaches winning the relay!! And finally a hugely successful distance time trial combined with the Norwood Swimming Club. This event showed true sportsmanship between clubs as well as a lot of determination and courage by the swimmers, many of who were attempting events for the first time. Thank you to the swimmers, parents and committee for making all of these happen. For us Coaches, these events are vital in bringing the club together, and seeing each other succeed in different ways brings great club spirit and motivation. The STARplex Social Committee is also well and truly up and running. Anyone with fundraising or social event ideas please feel free to express them. All the best to the swimmers competing at the upcoming Div 1, Div 2 and JX competitions, I very much look forward to seeing some more amazing results. 3 V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 5 P A G E 3 Congrats to our JX and YPS recipients The Junior Excellence (JX) program recognizes, rewards and encourages junior swimmers, who, through their development of aquatic skills and fitness, achieve a high standard of swimming excellence. Under the program, swimmers aged from 9-13 years who accomplish times set by Swimming Australia, qualify at,, or Gold standard, depending on their performances during the season. Qualifiers have their name published on the Swimming Australia website, as well as receiving: 9-10 years: JX cap, Certificate of Achievement, motivational poster, McDonalds voucher and a letter of congratulations years: JX shirt, Certificate of Achievement, motivational poster, McDonalds voucher, DVD and a letter of congratulations. Congratulations to the following JX recipients for 2014/15: Isobella Gold Star Kate Daniel Riley D Hannah Rachel Jessi Tom Ellen Samuel Alex C Amani Marisha Kayla Gabrielle G Darcie Jade Aiden Kallum Gold Gold The Youth Performance Squad (YPS) is an initiative designed to reward swimmers aged for their performance in the pool. The YPS is an extension of the JX program and rewards swimmers for achieving particular time standards set by Swimming Australia. The bronze standard is equivalent to a National Age qualifying time. Swimmers had from 1 May 2014 to the end of the Australian Age Championships to register a qualifying time. YPS qualifiers receive recognition by way of a customized towel, poster, cap, DVD, backpack and their name published on the Swimming Australia website. Congratulations to the following YPS recipients for 2014/15: Clarise Esther Hayden Josh R Jesse Will Connie Blue Blue Achievements and other news Congratulations to the following STARplex swimmers that have made the State teams for the Pacific School Games to be held in Adelaide in November SAPSASA: Isobella and Kate SSSSA: Clarise, Hayden, Jesse and Josh R More frequent flyer miles for Jessi who travelled to Melbourne in June for her school s annual sporting exchange with Heathdale Christian College. While they lost the swimming, they won the week and retained the Dale Cup. STARplex is holding a book sale on Saturday 4 July in the café area. Bring along your friends and grab a bargain! All book donations to Nicki Jackson. After a successful 2014/15, STARplex is again running its Club Championship series for the coming year. The first meet is on Thursday 9 July. Info in the pockets on pool deck. If you know of anybody that would like to give swimming a go, we are again running Come and Try events on the night. Entry is $5 and includes a pasta and pizza dinner afterwards.

After months of investing all those early morning and seemingly impossible main sets, the opportunity to reap the benefits of all of your hard work is upon you. Here are 7 tips from SwimSwam.com for making sure that you maximize all of your invested efforts going into States: What? Face paint, tutus, capes, hats, feather boas, pom poms, basically anything that is blue and yellow. 1 Pack like a boss An extra suit, goggles and cap are obvious ones. Then there is all the non essential, yet essential stuff. For some it is music - make sure your ipod is charged before you head to the pool Having had a few meets under your belt this year you should already have a good idea of what you need, and what you don't, as well as what you will need for your pre race routine. 2 Manage that extra energy In the couple of weeks leading up to the meet, training volume will go down and with it, you will experience a level of superhuman energy that you forgot you were capable of. Managing that sudden influx of energy will be challenging, but be mindful of burning it off in ways that don t interfere with your taper. When? Sunday 19 July Where? SA Aquatic Centre 3 Keep your diet surprise free Although we like to think that we love variety in our diet, most of us have a surprisingly consistent set of meals. Will these be available to you at the meet? The last thing you want is your stomach doing a back flip while you are standing behind the blocks moments before your big race. There are times to try new things with your diet; in the days and hours leading up to your competition is not one of them. Why? So everybody knows that STARplex is in the building! 4 Have your pre race routine planned out Your pre race routine acts as a trigger, a cue to your body that its time to rock and roll. Have a plan for your warm up, how long you are going to stretch, what you re going to listen to, and so on. Having a pre race routine helps to keep things familiar and comfortable for you, even if you are at a pool halfway across the globe. Don t know how to build one? Think back to the last time you swam completely out of your mind, and emulate those same circumstances. 5 Have goals for the meet Duh, right? But you would be amazed how many swimmers don t bother to plan this out. No expectations, no chance of being disappointed, am I right? Wrong. Revisit your dream goals and see where the upcoming meet fits into the long term plan. Go into the meet with a clear outline of what you hope to accomplish, whether it is time, stroke rates, splits and so on. S T A R P L E X S W I M C L U B

A special shout out to Myles who competed in his first events for STARplex, swimming at Fleurieu at the end of May and on the Sunday of our own club meet. From what I hear he was very excited and swam very well. Congratulations also go to Josh R for making the final of the breaststroke skins at the Div 1 meet. This placed him in the top ten on the day over all age groups - no easy feat. Results to the right are medal winners from June club carnivals, as well as the Fleurieu meet held at the end of May.
