President s Message 2015 / 2016 Welcome to all our new and existing members for the 2015 / 2016 swimming season. I am looking forward to this new season with all the wonderful families that we have in our Yeronga Park community. Shelly and the professional and fun coaching team we have at Yeronga have so much passion and commitment for swimming that our kids could not ask for better support to reach their individual goals. Rick, Rob, Wade, Alberto, Clay, Teagan, Kate, Gary and Reed on pool deck for the High Performance, National, State and mini squads teamed up with the wonderful Learn to Swim teachers getting the kids ready for all the various squads, the swimmers are the ones who will shine even more in the pool. Not to forget Shelly s gym at the TAFE which swimmers can utilize. Your committee works tirelessly behind the scenes to make the club a success all year round, and again I would like to personally thank every one of them in advance because without you the club would not function successfully. We are always looking for ways to help the kids and improve our club and at present have a wish list in place to try to improve our club facilities and a committee working on trying to make the wish list a reality. It is also very exciting that we are now able to run our 3 meets with the Short Course, A Grade and Hazel O Brien meet and look forward to seeing the same success for all that we have had with last years. Once again we have the great honour of having foundation members Mrs. Hazel O Brien and Mr. Russell Henry as our Patrons and Shelly Douyere (Life Member & Lessee) supporting our club in ways no one else could, which along with our wonderful coaches gives us a solid foundation for a very successful and fun season of swimming. Our swimmers are our most important asset and obviously the reason we are all in the club and we all endeavour to ensure that they will all have a wonderful, rewarding and most importantly, a fun time this season. There is nothing better than to see a smile on your child s face at the end of a race! Hard work but fun success will come from hard work but we also want to make sure everyone has a year packed with wonderful memories, fun times, great friendships and success in the pool. Don t forget to get those club clothes to make you feel like you are part of this wonderful team. We want all parents to feel a part of the family and the best way to do this is to lend a hand on club night. It is a great way to get to know the rest of the Yeronga Park families. Whether it be timekeeping, (which is a really fun way to spend the night and the kids just love it when Mum, Dad, Nan or Pop are on their lane), helping on the BBQ, or just making sure the kids are having fun, every little bit helps. Join in the Fun. Ted Curtis and Alan Waite kindly come along every club night and are more than happy to share their wealth of knowledge and assistance with anyone who is interested to learn more about officiating. Each year I say that I really want club members to feel they have a say in what happens to their club. I would again like to get suggestions from both swimmers and parents as to what they would like to see happen within the club. Please come and have a chat with me or any of the other committee members. We are only too happy to discuss anything with you. We are there to help!! Looking forward to this season and seeing you all on pool deck. Swim, hard, fast and strong but most importantly have fun doing it! Craig Rogers President 2

Coach s Report The busy 2015/16 season is about to begin and plans are in place to maintain Yeronga Park s reputation as a high profile club. We are a club that other club s set their benchmarks by. Yeronga Park Swimming Club competes is in the prestigious Premier Division of the Brisbane Swimming Association and competes in local club meets right through to International competitions. Swimmers from the club have competed successfully locally, nationally and internationally in the last season. Our newest recruit Lorna Tonks made it through to the semi-finals at the recently completed World Championships in Russia and Ryan Pini (life member) came out of retirement to dominate at the Pacific Championships in his home town of Port Moresby in August. At a National level we as a club took teams to the Australian Open Championships in Sydney, the Australian Age Championships in Sydney, the Australian Open Water Championships in Perth and the Australian Short Course in Adelaide. Not only can we boast about our elite swimmers but about the great structure we have in place to develop and nurture the younger swimmers in our area. During the last season we had great success with our junior programs. This is due to the dedication and commitment shown by our coaches Rob Van Der Zant, Wade Brennan, Teagan Rogers, Clay Douyere-Pate, Reed Douyere-Pate, Kate Irvine and Alberto Lantieri. We have a great bunch of young swimmers training and with a little encouragement we should see our junior numbers in the club increase. Our strength and conditioning program run by Paul Heffernan has also seen excellent results and with this great team of enthusiastic and knowledgeable coaches we can all look forward to a successful season. Thank you to Craig Rogers who again takes on the role of leading our club as President. Rob Melin again takes on the job of Treasurer looking after our financial affairs this season. Together with Shelly Douyere (Vice President), Dennis Drummond (Secretary), Jean Davison (Assistant Secretary), Ange Wall/ Dennis Drummond club night recording, Mandy Fordham (Registrar), Howard Friend (Meet Coordinator) and Sandy Rogers (Race Secretary) our committee will steer the club into the new season. We are pleased to have Life Members Russell Henry and Hazel O Brien as our Patrons again this year. Parental support is ever so vital in the successful running of a club. We do have an excellent and enthusiastic band of parents in our club and now it s up to them to work closely with the coaches and the committee for the benefit of our greatest asset - our swimmers. So I urge every family in our club to go out and speak to a new family about the benefits and enjoyment about being in our swim club. This season we will be running our 18th Annual Meet (Hazel O'Brien Novice) on the 24 October. This meet is vital to the development of our younger swimmers. Again this season we will target meets for our seniors and juniors. Toowoomba and the Yeronga Park A grade Meets are two interclub competitions where we will be out in force. The Queensland Championships will again be held in December this year. There will be lead up meets from the QSA and BSA that we will attend as preparation for the major meets. The Australian Open Championships will be held in Adelaide in April 2016 which are the Olympic Trials for our swimmers for both the able body and para teams. The Australian Age & multiclass Championships (13-18yrs) will be held in Adelaide a couple of days before the Olympic Trials. This is the meet many of our age swimmers will be targeting. I would like to welcome new members to the squads and club and encourage all families to support the functions, and particularly our club nights during the season. We are regarded in high esteem 3

nationally and internationally for what we do as a swimming club and that is to promote swimming from the developmental or teaching stage through to local, State, National and International levels. Our coaches are fully accredited with the Australian Coaches Association. Our number one priority to all club members, no matter what level of competition they are part of, is to enjoy and love what they are doing and to promote swimming at all times as a happy healthy sport to participate in. Rick Van Der Zant Head Coach Joining the Club Joining the club is done on-line via the Swimming Queensland website. Simply go to and click on the JOIN NOW! Button. You can use the on-line method to join the club provided you have never been registered with another club that is affiliated Swimming Queensland. However if you belong to another club simply contact Mandy Fordham, our club s Registrar, and give her your membership number which you can obtain from your current club or Swimming Queensland. Mandy can then request the transfer to Yeronga Park. If you have any questions about how to join the swimming club Mandy can be contacted at registrar@yerongaparkswimclub.org.au Club Nights Swim club nights are on a fortnightly basis conducted on Wednesday evenings in either the 50m pool or 25m pool depending on the events on offer. These nights are the most important function the club performs. This is where we provide races for all our swimmers from novice through to State and National level. It also provides swimmers with an opportunity to show their parents and coaches, newly learnt skills in a racing situation. All races are swum in a friendly non-threatening environment. We endeavour to organise races according to each swimmer s level. Boys and girls swim together for points, according to their times. Points are awarded for swimming and improvement of personal best times (P.B s). *Nominations for club nights are required to be in by 6:45pm. Late nominations will not be accepted. You need to complete a nomination slip to be able to swim and this must be in before 6:45pm so we can start at 7:00pm sharp. To even help more with nominations if swimmers, especially the ones involved in training on the afternoon of a club night, could have their nominations submitted before training. The nomination slips are at the Yeronga Park Swimming Club nomination desk located at the deep end of the 50m pool just outside of the clubhouse. There is normally a committee member close by to help if you need it. Before progressing to longer distances swimmers must be able to swim their current distance under a specific times, the promotion times are in this booklet. On club night we need help with timekeeping and other official duties. Our pool deck organisers will be more than happy to teach you how to timekeep etc. All assistance is greatly appreciated and it allows you, as parents to become involved in your child s sport and it is a fantastic way to get to know everyone. 4

BBQ Dinner Each club night we have a barbeque that has been a major fundraiser for a number of seasons. This season there will be a roster for volunteers. We invite club members to come along and assist with our BBQ. If everyone can help at just one or two club nights during the season the burden will be shared. Food and drinks will be available from around 5.30pm pm each club night. So parents will still see their children swim. Amanda Van Der Zant and Kylie Sheehan will be organising the BBQ this year. We will have the roster on hand at club night for volunteers to sign up. No experience needed, we will train you on the job. If you have a query please Amanda at bbq@yerongaparkswimclub.org.au Points On each club night swimmers gain points for each of the swims they complete. Points are scored for swimming and for the times swum against club night personal bests for each swimmer. These points are used to determine the winners of Points Trophies and NOT for the swimmers individual Championship Trophies. 50m Promotion Times Once swimmers have attained the following qualifying times over 25m they are encouraged to swim 50m. This year the goal will be for more swimmers qualifying and the aim is for a higher placing. National Open, Age & Multi Class Nationals are being held in Adelaide in April Queensland Meets Open Water/Long Course/State Titles/State Sprints What most of our training revolves around is peaking at our Queensland Championships in December. From this meet, swimmers are selected for Achievers Development Squad, State Age and State Open Teams to contest National Championships. The Queensland Sprints in February is not a bad meet to compete over the 50 metre events. Targeted Club Meets As a swimming club we will "target" certain swim meets during the year which is where we like as many swimmers to participate as possible. These meets are always a lot of fun because of the great participation. The swimmers get the chance to support their team mates and the parents also get the time to sit and chat with other parents. When we swim at Chandler for Brisbane Swimming meets swimmers can gain premiership points for our club. These "targeted" meets are listed later in this booklet and posted on our noticeboard on the brick 8

wall near the club room (deep end of the pool). We also send out notifications to remind club members when nominations are due. Nominations are then either done on-line or done through our Race Secretary. The on-line nominations are only available when the club running the meet has elected to do so. To nominate for targeted meets: 1. Sandy Rogers at listing the Event Numbers, best time, if you have swum the event before. (e.g. Event 5 50m Free 48.15). 2. Deposit nomination fee into the club bank account. All swim meets held by other clubs are listed on the "Happening Calendar" which can be found on the Swimming Queensland website. If you wish to swim at a meet that is not "targeted" then you need to: 1. the relevant club requesting the TM file and flyer 2 weeks before closing date (TM is the software clubs use). 3. this file and flyer to our race secretary at race.secretary@yerongaparkswimclub.org.au with the Event Numbers, best time if you have swum before. (e.g. Event 5 50m Free 48.15). 2. Deposit nomination fee into club bank account Any questions can be directed to Sandy at the race.secretary@yerongaparkswimclub.org.au address. 12 Expectations For Parents The following are a list of points or expectations, which I believe all parents, should spend some time reading. During a swim season emotions run high and refocussing on what we all aim for needs to be reassessed. Kids aren t perfect they are constantly developing. Parents need to appreciate their developments, not the final product. Kids will swim well at times and not so well at other times. Kids need appreciation and encouragement for themselves, not the swim. Kids need to set their own goals with their coach s guidance. They cannot commit themselves to swim your goals. The kids do the work, they commit themselves to what they want and to what they think they can do. To help new swim parents to gain a positive perspective on the sport. Parents role is to comfort and applaud and my role is to offer constructive criticism. You realise that every child can be a winner, even the opposition (If you know that winning is doing your best). To not offer swimming advice to your kids. To remember that swimming is not the only thing that kids do. Let the kids tell you about training or swim meets, rather than asking them what they did at training. Developing, encouraging, commit, fun, positive, comfort, winner, swimming and training are the key words and each of these aspects intermingle to being successful! Rick Van Der Zant Head Coach Swimming Lingo made simple Bands B/K CP Set Descending Form Stroke FOW F/S IM Long Course Negative Split PA Rubber band used around ankles so swimmer uses their arms only to pull through the water. Backstroke Critical Pace training session, aim to swim at maximum speed with heaps of rest between swim. Swim each distance faster within a given set as the set progresses, usually on the same time interval (i.e. Des 1-3). Any stroke other than Freestyle (i.e. Breaststroke, Butterfly or Backstroke). Place feet on wall when finishing. Freestyle Individual Medley A 50m long pool (LC). For any given distance, the second half is faster (in time) than the first half. Paddles 11

PB Pull Seasonal Best Short Course Taper Personal Best Time Using a Pull Buoy. The fastest time swum during a particular swimming season (e.g. July 2015 to June 2016.) A 25m long pool (SC). A pattern of reduced, but high intensity, leading up to an important meet. Warm Up / Warm Down The beginning (warm-up) or ending (warm-down) section of practice where the effort is not on speed or distance but rather to gently familiarize the body to exercise. Club Committee Meetings Club Committee meetings are held at 6.00pm once a month during summer (usually 3rd Tuesday in the Month). Keep an eye on the newsletter for meeting dates. All members are most welcome to attend these meetings. If you would like to help out with the running of the club you can join the club committee officially at the AGM but we are always looking for help during the season so see any of our committee members. If you have any issues or would like to make suggestions about the running of your club please our president, Craig Rogers who is more than happy to answer any questions and will look into any issues that arise and can be contacted at president@yerongaparkswimclub.org.au. Swimming Australia s "Go Swim" handbook is a good general info book for parents and can be found via this link Parents/GOSWIM%20Parent%20Handbboo k2015%20print.pdf Swim Meets As a club we are well represented at all the Brisbane and Queensland Swim Meets. Most club members also participate in meets held by other clubs during the season. Information on all targeted swim meets, as they come through, is put up on the notice boards. For the past couple of seasons, our team has competed in force at the Toowoomba Flyers Swim Meet in October. Targeted meets are the swim meets that coaching staff target, they include most of the BSA/QSA Meets. A question I am asked frequently is What should I go in? It is my belief to nominate in all four strokes unless I have particularly advised swimmers to miss out on an event for a particular purpose. This is rarely the case. We train to compete in all four strokes and I think it s also a waste of time sitting out an event at a meet just because it s not your preferred stroke. This is particularly important for all our 13yrs & under swimmers who should target all strokes. The QSA and BSA calendar have many meets scheduled and our major focus will be on the Senior Metropolitan Championships 30 th October to 1 st November, the State Championships from the 12 th to 18 th December 2015 and the Brisbane Junior Metropolitan Championships 12 th to 13 th February Check out the swim dates listed in this booklet. 14 Club Run Swim Meets The Hazel O Brien Novice Swim Meet 24 October 2015 We will be conducting our 18th Annual Yeronga Park Annual Swim Meet this year. The meet is named in honour of Hazel O Brien our Club Patroness who was a founding member of the swimming club in We are asking for your support once again for this wonderful meet. This meet allows younger and less experienced swimmers to compete in a swim meet environment. We also have our older and elite swimmers helping out on the day as well as officials, volunteers and presenters. Last year we had over 215 swimmers compete from 14 different clubs in the Brisbane Metropolitan area and surrounding districts. The meet is a fun day with many young swimmers competing for the very first time at a swim meet other than their club night competitions. We aim for a relaxed and easy going day where the atmosphere is exactly what first time and novice swimmers and parents need so they can enjoy both the swimming and out of the water components of a swim meet. Yeronga Park A Grade Long Couse Qualifying Meet 7 / 8 November 2015 The club will be running its second long course A Grade Qualifying meet on the 7/8 November. This swim meet will give not only our swimmers but also other swimmers from other BSA affiliated swim clubs the opportunity to qualify for the upcoming Brisbane Metropolitan and Queensland Championships. Last year we had over 275 competitors from 27 Clubs competing. We are asking for all club members to again support this meet and with the 25 metre pool as a great warm down pool we will get the opportunity to show swimmers from other clubs the wonderful surrounds in which we train and compete in at our club nights. Sponsorship Once again we have the continued support / sponsorship from Shelly our Pool Lessee. This year we again have Alan and Ange Wall from Accelerate Automotive as our major sponsor for all YP Swim Meets. The club will be conducting the Hazel O Brien Novice Swim Meet named after our Patroness Hazel O Brien for her continued support of the club over the last 50 years. Volunteers at our swim meets are given T-Shirts with the Yeronga Park Swimming Complex logo on the front and the logo s of other sponsors on the back. We have a number of different size sponsorship spaces available at different costs. There is a limited number of sponsorship spaces available for each level of sponsorship. A tax invoice will be issued for all sponsorship. The available sponsorship logo sizes, costs and number available are: 2 x 12cm x 6cm spaces for $500 4 x 10cm x 5cm spaces for $250 8 x 8cm x 4cm spaces for $125 Jodie Milner is our sponsorship coordinator this year and she can be contacted at sponsorship@yerongaparkswimclub.org.au So if you would like to sponsor the club, or know someone who would like to sponsor the club please let Jodie know. Club Clothing / Uniform The club keeps on hand a stock of club T Shirts and swimming caps and then during the year, when there is enough demand, orders are done for shorts, hoodies etc. We do like our swimmers to wear the club T Shirt when representing the club, but when representing the club the club swimming cap should / must be worn. The Green and Gold of our uniform looks fantastic in the stands at a swim meet. Sue Nagle is our clothing coordinator, she can be contacted at clothing@yerongaparkswimclub.org.au or you can catch her at the pool on club nights. 13
