Their goal was to make sure we keep the game of pickleball fun for everyone in our state. A few of the topics discussed were, referee training, scheduling tournaments so they do not fall on the same weekends, Medical ID cards, certification of instructors and development of leagues. Plans are being made for a second meeting some time in early If you have any questions about the USAPA Ambassador program please contact Bill Hess at b3779@hotmail.com. From the Kitchen Playing tournaments is not for everyone. You may be one of the many pickleball players that are happy to just get out two or three times a week for social play. However you may enjoy becoming a spectator at one of the many great tournaments that we have here in Georgia. Check out the event calendar and plan on spending a morning, afternoon or even the whole day watching some very competitive play. You will not only be entertained you can pick up some great tips to better your own game. You may also enjoy browsing the many vendor booths featuring paddles, pickleball clothing and accessories that are usually set up around the tournament site. b THE GPB The GPB is produced for all our Georgia pickleball players to enjoy hearing about tournaments, tidbits, photos and fellow players throughout the state. 2 Make the Right Call 2 ThePlay: Team A hits the ball to team B. Ball hits top of net and rolls over top of net. On the way down ball hits horizontal net brace on team B's side of the net, and than hits floor. Team B calls it a let and asks for a play over. Answer: If team B cannot return ball before second bounce team A wins the rally. Rule: 12.J.5 When net systems have a horizontal bar that may include a center base: If the ball hits the horizontal bar or the center base before going over the net, it is a fault. If the ball goes over the net and then hits the horizontal bar, the ball is still in play. If the ball goes over the net and then hits the center base or the ball gets caught between the net and the horizontal bar before touching the court, it is a let and must be replayed. (added April 1, 2011) Learning the Game Referee Training Georgia Mountain Pickleball in Hiawassee had the pleasure of hosting Ms. Inga Carr from Hendersonville, NC last month for a pickleball refereeing class. Inga is a USAPA certified referee as well as an IPTPA teaching professional. We had 19 players in attendance and Inga put on an extremely interesting and comprehensive session. The three hour class went by very quickly and the last segment was a demonstration game whereby the students got some real hands-on refereeing. Inga has the blessing of the USAPA to conduct these classes in the NC, SC, and GA area and she does so at her own expense all she asks is you treat her to lunch which we gladly did. If you re considering asking Inga to come to your area to teach, I would highly recommend you do so. She s not only extremely knowledgeable, but, conveys all her vast knowledge in an easily understood and interesting fashion. She s a great teacher and a great player, too, by the way. We re looking forward to having her back soon for Pickleball Refereeing 102!

5 Pickleball R x Eye Injuries 5 Eye Injuries from Pickleball Every year over 600,000 recreational and sports related eye injuries occur. Of these close to 14,000 result in a permanent loss of sight. Racket sports rank 4th among activities causing eye injuries. About 90% of these could be avoided with the use of protective eyewear made of poly- carbonate lenses. Polycarbonate lenses are highly impact rvesistant and are available in prescription and non-prescription lenses, and they offer UV protection. A change or loss of vision causes a significant lifestyle change, and has a social and financial impact. Pickleball is classified as a high risk activity because it involves a ball and a paddle, both of which can potentially cause eye trauma. Eye injuries are classified into three different types Blunt Trauma; This is when an object strikes your eye, and is the most common injury. This can result in orbital fractures, a ruptured globe (broken eyeball), a vitreous hemorrhage, or a detached retina. The retina is the posterior part of the eye sensitive to light and creates a visual image, similar to the film in a camera. Penetrating Injuries; This is when something cuts your eye, it is very rarely seen in racket sports, unless eyeglasses are broken. Radiation Injuries; This is caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation from sunlight. Excessive exposure to UV light can cause eye damage, including cataracts, macular degeneration and temporary vision loss. The closer you are to the equator and the higher the elevation, the greater the UV exposure. From 10:00 a.m. to 2 p.m, UV exposure is greatest and certain medications such as tetracycline, sulfa drugs, oral contraceptives, diuretics and tranquilizers increase exposure. A pickleball can travel at one third the velocity of a tennis ball, which means it can travel at about 40 MPH. With two players at the no volley line it takes milliseconds, or less than half a second for the ball to travel from one paddle to the other. In other words you do not have time to avoid being hit in the eye with a ball. You can test your reaction time at this website. In addition to injuries from being hit by a ball, serious damage can occur from being hit in the eye with a paddle. If you do suffer eye trauma playing Pickleball, see an Opthomolgist immediately if the injury results in a loss or change in vision, significant pain, bruising or bleeding. See the ball even better with these eye-saving glasses. The lenses are made of a shatterproof polycarbonate, And they offer UV protection.
