Word from the President Last week I was sent the following that I thought could apply to the LHTC. Roger Federer s 7 Rules of Success:- Have a structured goal plan Learn from your mistakes Chase your dreams Work on your strengths Question yourself Build a great team Be prepared Your Committee already have adopted some of the above they undertake planning - have a great team and work with their strengths. In fact they perform to most of Roger s Rules. One omission, well it might be there, but let us know what you think. Members well, tell your Committee what are your dreams. If it works for Roger it will work for us. Together lets Chase our Dreams John Donaghy President Chairman s Report The club has had another good year with senior membership staying steady, but another small drop in junior membership. All the social leagues continue to attract good participation. Thanks to Yadgar Irani (Wednesday night league); Martin Ryan (Monday night league); Tinie and Simon Jellie (Saturday league) and Jackie Clarke (mid-week club) for their efforts in organising and co-ordinating these club activities for club members. The junior club continues to be a major part of club activities. A lot of work goes into the organisation of the junior club with a separate junior subcommittee doing a great job running the junior club. Thanks to Anna Brownlie and her subcommittee for the time they put into this. More volunteers would be very welcome to join this subcommittee. On the competitive playing side, the club continued to be strongly represented in both junior and senior tournaments and competitions. Thanks to our interclub conveners Trevor Dine and Raewyn Roberts, who have both been in these roles for a number of years now. They contribute a lot of time in selection and over-seeing the summer interclub teams. Our programme to ensure we have the best possible facilities is continuing and the playing surface on courts three and four will be replaced with new astroturf before the new season begins. 8

Unfortunately our club maintenance man Graeme Josephson has decided to give up his role and will not continue on the committee. Graeme has served on the committee for many years and has made an enormous contribution to the current health of the club. The role he has performed keeps everything ticking over, and it would be great if somebody with a like skillset could fill his shoes. I look forward to seeing you all at the club over the coming season. Mark Cullen Chairman Midweek Report We were getting a regular number of 10 players attending Tuesday mornings in summer. Over winter this number has dropped a bit but there are still enough players to have plenty of tennis. We have welcomed two new members to the midweek club this year. We had four teams playing summer interclub - 2 in A & B grade. Teams and placings were:- A Grade Team 1 4th Barb, Sheryl, Deanna, Jackie A Grade Team 2 9th Judy H, Ros, Judy P, Lynne, Victoria, Sandra B Grade Team 1 4th Hayley, Tinie, Lillian, Tina B Grade Team 2 9th Steph, Jocelyn, Jan, Fiona Awards were given for the following players:- Highest Interclub Aggregate Deanna Puata (84%) Most Improved Player John Terris 9

The midweek club combined their AGM and prize giving with a Soup Day. Great to see so many players and ex-players come and enjoy the pumpkin and kumera, and pea and ham soups. We even had freshly baked baguettes this year. This year it was our turn to go to Khandallah where we had a fun tournament. Due to a fall in numbers it was decided that we would only have half a ham for our Christmas lunch. Our fabulous chef was a bit worried it might not taste as good but there was no need to worry another wonderful Christmas lunch of freshly baked ham, bread and salads were enjoyed. Jackie Clarke, Midweek Club Captain 10

Pre-Xmas competition Senior Men s Interclub 2015/16 Post-Xmas competition Team Result Team Result Premier 3 4th Premier 3 5th Premier 4 7th Division 1 1st Division 1 5th 6th Division 2 4th Division 2 1st 7th 4 th 8th 5 th 6 th It was another successful interclub season for the clubs senior men. Our top Division 1 team won the pre-xmas competition. Lower Hutt Tsonga won the Boys Premier A pre-xmas competition. On promotion to senior tennis they immediately won Division 2. Great achievement guys. It is great to see that the club has a growing number of teams in the lower grades. This should be a great sign for the future. Trevor Senior Interclub Convener Women s Weekend Interclub Review The season has been a successful one for the club. We have retained our place in each of the 3 Premier Grades in the Wellington region competition. Good sportsmanship was displayed by all players. Post-Xmas Results: Premier 1-4th (Pre-Xmas 3rd) (Amelia Harris, Julie Scott (c), Hanna Baxter, Jemima Jansen, Rachel Baxter, Carmel Sheehan) All team members contributed points to their team's total in this competition. We were unable to field our top team for all ties and this made achieving the top position difficult. Premier 2-6th (Pre-Xmas 6th) (Rebecca Clarke (c), Sarah Parish, Madeleine Williams, Katrin Scott, Nicola Wall. Manager - Jackie Clarke) 12

Every player experienced singles and doubles wins. There were many close matches, especially in doubles. A closed road on the Rimutaka Hill contributed to it being difficult for the team to finish higher in the Premier 2 competition. Possibly a bit more practise may have also benefitted team members, however this was a team that played with good spirit and it would be great to see all these players back next season. Premier 3-3rd (Pre-Xmas 2nd) (Claire Brownlie (c), Emily Dine, Laura Powlesland, Nicole Brown, Sophie Painter, Lulu Jansen. Manager Michelle Dolan) There were a lot of very good results for these young players. They played with commendable effort and went close to winning the grade. Hutt Valley Division 1-4th (Pre-Xmas 3rd) (Elise Hendry, Emma McEwan, Olivia Henderson, Lizzie Lee (c), Tessa Lee) This team experienced some tough matches but all players competed with good spirit and were very reliable team members. Thank you very much to the team managers and captains. Once again they have done a fantastic job throughout the season, ensuring their teams had full playing contingents each Saturday and that they had tennis balls, team sheets, etc. Their efforts were greatly appreciated. Raewyn Roberts Senior Interclub Convener Junior Committee Junior Report Thanks to our dedicated team of volunteers who put in a lot of time organizing the junior club, including interclub trials, ongoing management of tournaments and events and meeting/greeting new members. Anna Brownlie, Michelle Renton, Gary Naylor, Rochelle Forbes, Sanjay Bhawan, Tania Blucher and Sarah Painter. Thanks especially to those standing down this year: Anna Brownlie who has lead the committee for a number of years- not quite sure how we will do things without her Michelle Renton whom has entered all the interclub scores in for the junior teams for a number of years as well as assisting with events. We are now looking for some keen new supporters of our club to step up and help us to plan for the coming season and continue to improve our club. Sunday Morning Coaching Andrew Chuah ran 2 sessions rather than 3 due to the lower numbers attending. 13

Friday Night Coaching We continued to run with two sessions: 5pm-6.30pm for our lower Divisional interclub teams and 6.30pm-8pm for the remaining teams. Thanks to committee members who were rostered on each week to organize the running of supper for the early group and to the parents who supported this. The numbers have dwindled in attendance to these sessions particularly the later session. Thanks to coach Andrew Chuah who provided some good drills and games with some coaching and match play too. The new club shirts have been introduced with most junior players wearing them for interclub. They seem to be well received with the option of a polo, tee shirt or singlet. Junior Interclub The number of teams in both girls and boys dropped again from the previous year. We had only 6 boys and 6 girls teams. 7 teams less from the previous year. 2 of the teams from the previous year in the junior girls had been promoted to Hutt Valley Woman s and Premier Woman s division. As the results table below shows we had 6 grade wins and 5 grade runners up over the season. Numbers were even lower than the year before at 27 players for There wasn t enough interest in the mixed doubles to go ahead with this. Tournament Planner software was used to run the tournament which allowed players to check times and results online. Effort was made to accommodate conflicting sporting commitments. Thanks to those who organised and ran this event. 14

Parent and Child Tournament This was meant to be held on February the 19th, the aim was to try and encourage the younger players attending Sunday morning coaching to come along with their families. This was cancelled late as it didn't appear that enough people had signed up for it. Junior Prize Giving Friday 7th April 2017 Junior prize giving began with supper and with the ceremony beginning at 7.30pm. Andrew Chuah spoke briefly about the coaching season. 19 Coaches Report Having coached at one of the best clubs in Wellington for 2 years, it s a privilege again to deliver this report. It is certainly a pleasure to coach and watch the junior members develop and grow as players. This is not disregarding the senior members, as coaching is not just for the young! Thank you to the Junior Committee, led by Anna Brownlie, for investing their time and efforts into organising Friday Night and Sunday mornings. They have made it an enjoyable event for all. The Friday night was catered specifically for the interclub players and prepared them to play on Saturdays. Supper was a main feature for the first session and most players had a healthy appetite! Whilst Sunday mornings focused on the large group of beginners and non-interclub players. For the first time, we initiated a learning program that involved parents. Our objective was to teach and encourage players and parents to practice together outside of the Sunday sessions, with the aim to advance the child s development. The coaching crew was made up of Head Coach, Andrew Chuah, and his Assistant Coaches: Rorie French, Francis Pooke, Joshua Chuah and Jenifer Chuah. They all helped with facilitating the sessions in a cheerful and professional manner. As with any industry, furthering your knowledge and education is a must. This year we attended the Tennis Australia Open Coaches Conference with some big-name speakers, Judy Murray (Andy s mum), Thomas Hogstedt (Maria s ex-coach), Toni Nadal and more. Some great information and knowledge was received well and able to be absorbed in to our coaching programs. Squad training is also a mainstay of our coaching and is offered during the week. It was well received and allows junior players to practice tactical and technique in a good coach player ratio 1:8. Hutt Intermediate is one of our schools that we coach at and again will be providing coaching services to the students for Electives this year. All in all, it was a good year of tennis coaching and we have noticed a good growth of members who have used our services which ranges from Private Lessons, Hot Shots Squad Training, Junior Squad Training for Interclub Players, Cardio lessons and soon Tennis Xpress for adult beginners. Looking forward to a great season, Andrew and the Team There is no substitute for hard work but when you add fun, it makes it easier Saturday Afternoon League Saturday league has had a steady turnout over the summer months and standard of play has been excellent. Kathy Maguren and Zelma Foo won the B grade Women s Doubles and Hayley and Jamie Kruger won the B grade Mixed Doubles in the Senior Championship. A Pink and Blue Ribbon fundraiser was held and well supported despite the weather conditions being challenging on the day. Thank you to everyone for your support. Kerry Francis, one of our permanent players, has moved to Brisbane and we wish her well in her new career. The format of play is still 19

from 1 pm till 3 pm covering four courts and seems to be well received by everyone and therefore will be continued. Tinie Jellie Saturday League Organiser Monday Night League We've been lucky enough to have a few beautiful nights for tennis this winter, along with a few not so great nights. A handful of new members have signed up over the last term giving our numbers a bit of a boost and injecting some fresh blood into the competition, which is always welcome. We've upped the number of singles games which is providing some great exercise to ward off the winter chills. Singles are also now ranked separately from doubles. Yadgar Irani is our number 1 at the moment for doubles and Paul Harris for singles - though we usually get turnover at the top every other week. Martin Ryan Monday Night League Organiser Wednesday Night League Wednesday Night League sees interest from members with diverse skill range. The league tries to support skill development by ensuring draws with evenly matched players. The social and fun aspect is maintained by ensuring participants do not play against same players every week. Statistically, there have been a max of 32 and a min of 16 participants. The league has also provided a trial to 3 guests. One of whom has gone on to become a member! Yadgar Irani Wednesday Night League Organiser 20

INDEPENDENT ASSURANCE REPORT To the members of the Lower Hutt Tennis Club (Inc.): I have reviewed the financial statements on pages 21 to 23 of Lower Hutt Tennis Club Inc for the year ended 31 May 2017, in accordance with A1 Accounting Standards Framework issued by the External Reporting Board (XRB). These have been prepared in accordance with the financial reporting framework described in the Notes to the Financial Statements. The Club has elected to continue to use Differential Reporting under GAAP that, for reporting periods beginning 1 April 2015, would not differ from Tier 4 Not for Profit Public Benefit entity reporting requirements under XRB A1. An independent assurance review is performed under International Standards on Review Engagements (NZ) - (ISRE (NZ)) - specifically ISRE (NZ) 2400 and is limited primarily to enquiries of committee personnel and analytical review procedures applied to financial data and thus provides less assurance than an audit. I have not performed an audit or a review engagement and, accordingly, I do not express an audit opinion. As the Lower Hutt Tennis Club Inc has expenditures of less than $1 million per annum no audit is required. Based on my review, nothing has come to my attention that causes me to believe that the accompanying financial statements do not give a true and fair view.
