I am 24 years old, born and raised in Upper Hutt and now residing in Wellington. Tennis has always been a passion of mine; I first picked up a racquet at 8 years old and instantly loved it. I played out a junior career which included representing the Hutt Valley, representing Central and eventually had me traveling overseas to compete in ITF s. Recently my playing career has had me playing for Tawa in Premier 1, winning back to back titles in 2015/16 & 2016/17 and reach a high of s2 on the configure ranking list. This season you will see me wearing a Lower Hutt shirt competing for the top men s team at the club. At 17 years old I started my coaching career at the Upper Hutt Tennis Club and am now leaving my role as head coach at Khandallah to coach at Lower Hutt. Since 2014, I have held the ITF Level 1 Qualification and have been on the waitlist for the ITF Level 2 Qualification for over a year. I have had experience coaching all ages; coaching players as young as three and as experienced as 76. I have coached performance players who have represented Wellington and have a lot of experience coaching complete beginners; whatever your tennis goal is, I can help you achieve it! I will be at the club over the Love Tennis Weekend on the 8/9 September. I m looking forward to meeting everyone over the weekend and having a hit with you all on court! CLUB COACH APPOINTMENT The club has just appointed a new club coach for a 2 year term. Meet Michael McGlinchey Michael McGlinchey Tennis Coach or mcglincheycoaching@gmail.com

SanjayLHTC@gmail.com WOMEN S WEEKEND INTERCLUB Wellington Premier interclub commences on 13th October with Hutt Valley interclub commencing 27 th October. Our club will be holding 2 squad practises for anyone thinking of playing senior interclub. These practises are lowkey and provide an opportunity to meet other interclub players and to also have a hit against players of similar ability. Hutt Valley Interclub starts 27th October. We expect our team entitlement will be 1x Premier 3, 2x Division 1 and as many Division 2 as we want. We need players that will try to be available every week, but we also need reserves who can fill in for the occasional Saturday. Get together a few mates. Trials will be held about 3 weeks before the competition commences. Please contact me if you are interested or have a question. Trevor Dine Men s Interclub Selector or trevor.dine@slingshot.co.nz MIDWEEK The midweek club meets on Tuesday mornings from 9.30 for casual games of doubles. All are welcome to come and join us. 4 SUNDAY MORNING PRESIDENT S GRADE TENNIS President s interclub is played fortnightly at Mitchell Park on Sunday mornings throughout the Summer season (October through to April, but not in January). This is for women and men over the age of 35 only. There are four players per team, two male and two female. Players play one men s/women s doubles and two mixed doubles per match. To play in this competition there is an additional $60 interclub fee. Contact me if you are interested or would like more information. Mandy Stewart Liaison for President s Grade or suchfunx@gmail.com MONDAY NIGHT LEAGUE Late summer through early winter provided great weather for Monday night tennis but it hasn t been great for us over the last few months; far too many cancellations. It's great that we've had some new players show interest over the last year providing more competition which is always welcome. I haven't been running the ranking system and intend to bring that back soon. On current form, I think that the best player is Paul Harris, though James Lord was heading for the top until injury got in his way. Steve Hector, Yadgar Irani and Peter Prichard all win their top matches regularly. On Monday nights we operate a mix of some singles matches and mostly doubles. You don't have to be available for singles either - you can play all doubles if you want. Send me a message if you are keen and get on the Monday Night League list, even if you only want to play occasionally. Ken Barnett - Monday Night League Organiser or kenneth_barnett@outlook.com Here s Graeme Josephson with the Mark Hardy Wednesday Night Cup. SATURDAY AFTERNOON TENNIS Saturday Afternoon League had a good turnout over the summer months, with the sunny weather being very accommodating. The main core of attendees have remained steady through the winter, and apart from the occasional injury, everyone has enjoyed a good level of play. Although numbers tend to go down in winter, most still enjoy a good day s winter tennis, weather permitting of course. Format of play is predominantly doubles games (sometimes members choose to play singles if numbers suit), and from 1pm till 3pm, covering four courts. This is well-received by everyone and therefore will be continued. Thank you to everyone for supporting Saturday Afternoon League tennis. New players are most welcome. Tinie and Simon Jellie - Saturday League Organisers tinie.jellie@outlook.com TUESDAY NIGHT LEAGUE Tuesday Night Tennis is singles tennis, open to all members who are looking for that fast paced run around that only singles play can provide. Players are ranked according to results and will usually play others of roughly the same ability. The format is one match per night which is the best of three sets, starting at 7:30pm. For further details send me an . Martin Ryan - Tuesday Night League Organiser martin.w.ryan@gmail.com WEDNESDAY NIGHT LEAGUE The Wednesday Night League is a social league, played all year round. Starting at 7pm, it is primarily doubles and mixed play. Teams are made up weekly providing players with matches of similar ability. All players most welcome... To be added to the list please send me an . Mandy Stewart - Wednesday Night League Organiser or wnltennis@gmail.com

5 MAINTENANCE We have a light out on court 3, so I ordered the bulb, organised the cherry picker and the electrician only to find that the bulb was wrong!! Another bulb has been ordered so it won t be long before we are up and running. We did take advantage of the cherry picker and along with help from Alan Reece we adjusted 8 lamps downwards - this was to stop glare. A big thanks to Alan, it was certainly a 2 person job and I appreciated his technical skills especially with the cherry picker operation!! We are looking ahead and checking out LED lamps, but from my initial enquiries they aren t cheap. Thanks to our good neighbour, Ron, who tells me that we lost a tree down by the swing, the club and grounds are looking good despite the wet winter, roll on summer. If there are things around the courts that need to be fixed, please let Graeme know. If we don t know about something, we can t fix it! Graeme Josephson Property and Maintenance gnjeaj@gmail.com Over the year, contributions by way of grants and sponsorship, supported junior coaching, tennis balls, affiliation fees, fencing and resurfacing of courts 3 and 4. FACILITIES Please remember that if you are socialising after your game of tennis it is your responsibility to clean up after yourself e.g. bottles in the recycling bin, glasses brought inside and placed in the dishwasher. If the dishwasher is full please wash your own dishes. If you are using the BBQ or heater please remember to turn off the gas bottle. When you are playing at the club you need to leave the clubhouse and the grounds tidy. A reminder that we are not allowed to use the lights on Sunday nights due to the resource consent. If you are chewing gum please remember to put it in the bin and not on the roof of the clubhouse or courts. Dog owners make sure you pick up after your dog. The net winders for courts 1 and 2 and 9 & 10 are stored in the cupboard beside the rubbish bin. Please do not use the court sweepers on the AstroTurf these are only to be used on the plexipave. WEBSITE If you do not wish for your photo to be published on the website, Facebook page or newsletter please Stephanie Fuller at stephfuller@outlook.co.nz LIKE US The purpose of our Facebook page is to put us out there in the ever-growing social media to make our presence in the community known and for messaging. Click and Like to follow your club! COURT USAGE At this time of the year the courts can start getting pretty busy at peak times from 5pm on weekdays and 1pm 4pm on weekends. SPONSORS CORNER The Club thanks the following sponsors: The club policy is that interclub, leagues and coaching have first priority for usage, and then it is first in first served basis. FIRST AID First aid supplies can be found in the kitchen cupboard as well as an icepack in the freezer for any minor injuries.

6 RULES AND ETIQUETTE With the start of the new season approaching, it is time to remind you of the rules and manners of the sport. A player calls all shots landing on, or aimed at, the player s side of the net. If any part of the ball touches the line the ball is good. A ball 99% out is still 100% good. Any ball that cannot be called out is considered to be good. A player may not claim a let on the basis of not seeing the ball. When a ball from another court enters the playing area, any player on the court affected can call a let as soon as the player becomes aware of the ball. Partner s disagreement on calls. If one partner calls the ball out and the other partner sees the ball is good, the ball is good. Don t walk behind another court during a point, wait until the point is over. Quiz 1: What Nevada-born tennis star had a ball and racquet to stare at above his crib? Quiz 2: Who broke Martina Navratilova's record of 331 weeks at number one? Thank you to everyone who contributed to this newsletter with updates and photos. Sending me your contributions through in a timely manner made my task a lot easier. I also appreciated everyone responding to my queries very promptly. Next time should be a bit smoother! If you would like to have the opportunity to contribute something in the next newsletter then send me an and I can add you to my list of contributors. I am not sure when the next newsletter will be coming out but there will be more Thanks for reading and see you at the club.
