Time Wounds All Heels Plantar Fasciitis Still the Number 1 Foot Ailment Plantar Fasciitis (PF) is one of the most prevalent foot maladies in the game of tennis due tothe hard surfaces we play on (in most cases). Generally the pain is caused by inflamation of the fascia which attaches the heel bone to the metatarsals in the ball of the foot. Plantar Fasciitis is characterized by pain in the arch/ heel which is severe upon wakening (first syeps), subsides and then the pain intensifies during the day, especially when doing a lot of standing, walking or running! RELIEF! 1. Supporting the arch and fascia is imperative with either the correct over the counter insert or custom orthotics. 2. Ice the area by rolling the arch over a frozen bottle of water. 3. Learn a good stretch for the achilles tendon that will not stress the fascia. 4. Wear a Plantar Fasciitis foot sleep support to bed at night to help the fascia heal in the stretched position. 5. When not in tennis shoes, wear shoes that massage the arch and help stretch the achilles tendon. 52% 42% 37% % of most frequent areas of pain, mapped from 2,666 patients Sue Orischak Board Certified Pedorthist page 3

Great Turnout for Southwest Conference! What a weekend! Two days at the beautiful Carefree Resort and Conference Center surrounded by some of the top names in the industry and the Southwest Divsion. The conference kicked off on Friday with eager new USPTA applicants beginning their testing. While the testing took place attendees had the opportunity to join Southwest USPTA professional Josh Basha in a morning Cardio tennis session. The day continued with Jason Jamison - USTA leading a spirited oncourt session featuring Supercharged Drills for Teams and Large Groups. This was followed by Mark Fairchilds, USPTA leading the specialty course on singles strategy. Moving the specialty course to Friday was one of the popular suggestions from last year s conference. You were right! This was the largest attended specialty course in years. The weekend continued Saturday morning with Mark Frampton s popular Smash and Dash clinic. A great way to kick start a day packed with speakers and informative question and answer sessions. Jorge Andrew, courtesy of Head/Penn led an oncourt drill session focused on Action and Reaction. No line drills here, this was about moving and keeping your players moving. Southwest Division pro Alex Ramirez then spoke on Player Development skills and focus. Mark Fairchilds spoke on Saturday as well with a session on the Six Zones of Doubles. And this was only the morning session! After the awards luncheon it was back to the courts as longtime Southwest professional Jim Reffkin from the Reffkin Tennis Center spoke on how to produce a Profitable QuickStart program. First time division speaker and Southwest pro Eduardo (Lalo) Vicencio followed with an oncourt presentation focused on Coordination, Speed, and Agility. The final presentation featured Ken DeHart - courtesy of Wilson who delivered a session on the 50 best tennis tips for Players, Coaches, and Pros. Ken was even joined by his 94 year old father who was seeing him give an oncourt presentation for the first time. After a long but informative day on court attendees headed to the conference center for the Trade Show and Party featuring the newest products from HEAD/Penn and many other industry representatives from across the country. Thank you to all of those who attended. We always appreciate your feedback on anything concerning the conference. This is your weekend and we want to make it worth your while. See you on the courts and see you at the 2012 Southwest Division Conference. page 4

page 6 Southeastern Arizona by David Hendricks The Southwest annual conference at Carefree Resort in January was a wonderful event. Thank you to all the committee members. At Tucson Racquet Club USPTA Professional Mike Gleason returns from Naples, Florida after training at the World s # 1 tennis facility. There were some of Europe s finest tennis professionals, Emilio Sanchez Vicario and Luis Mediero, at Academia Sanchez- Casal. It s amazing what goes into their training programs, Mike said, having learned some of the most up to date training techniques in the world. He enjoyed working on the facilities 37 clay courts. Learning to play tennis on clay courts has its advantages. It slows the game down so players can pay a better focus on how to construct points. Something has to be said for serving it up the Spanish way because Spain has produced many of the world s top players in the past 20 years, such as Carlos Moya, Juan Carlos Ferrero, and Rafael Nadal. These players are great role models for today s aspiring players and serve as a strong testament to where Spanish tennis has been and will continue to go into the future. Mike is already planning to return in the near future for more of the Unique Training Methods of the AS-C System. USPTA Professionals Jil and Britt Feldhausen met with 90 fifth graders from Ford Elementary school on Tuesday February the 11th. They met at Reffkin Tennis Center and played 30 matches and received their own tennis rackets, covers and balls. The event was one of several graduations hosted by the Tucson Community Tennis Program. The Bhutanese Tennis group started in December 2010 has now met four times. Jil and Britt Feldhausen started with high school age juniors and the group now hosts all ages of children some as young as six. Tucson Community Tennis Program did provide rackets for the older juniors who continue to find practice time on their own. The USPTA next lunch will be at Reffkin Center on noon. Do a 10-minute drill and you may win a prize. 7 Phoenix, Arizona Southern New Mexico & El Paso by Mark Pachtner by Lalo Vicencio The New Year started out with our great annual conference at the Carefree Resort. High caliber speakers and excellent on-court presentations were only some of the highlights. We also honored the USPTA Southwest award winners during our luncheon. Mark your calendar, our next district meeting will be on April 8 from 6-9 p.m. at the Brunswick Via Linda Lanes at 9027 East Via Linda in Scottsdale. Stop by for a social meeting with an open forum from 6-7 p.m. and then we will do some bowling. We will have prizes for the highest and lowest scores. Do you want to play in the US Open this year? Scottsdale Ranch Park will host the 2011 US Open National Playoffs Southwest Qualifying Tournament. Here is the information if you might be interested in participating. Mixed doubles is new and included this year! Registration will start March 15 for men s and women s singles and mixed doubles events. Matches are played from April 14 through April 17 at Scottsdale Ranch Park, East Via Linda, Scottsdale, AZ Call or go to for more information. Our own Laurie Warder is back in town. Laurie worked in China initially with their Fed Cup doubles players because of her ATP playing background in doubles (Australian Open Winner in 1993 and formerly ranked #12) but then she became the full time coach for Zhang Shuai from Estoril through the French Open, Wimbledon and to the China Open where Shuai s ranking improved from 175 to 74 within 6 months. After that Laurie started preparing with the doubles teams for the Asian Games before returning home to Arizona in December Welcome back Laurie! Chris Brewer was hired as the new Director of Tennis/ Head Professional at the Village Health Club in Verrado. It is just the beginning of 2011 and it seems like we are going to have a year full of activities. Just a few weeks into the year and many juniors from El Paso have already traveled to Arizona a couple of times for their first tournaments of the season. As I am writing this article the adult teams are very busy recruiting and making the final additions to their roster before the spring season begins, good luck to all of them! During January the infamous arctic cold front brought record low temperatures for many cities across the country and El Paso was not the exception. For the first time in over 50 years we could see the thermometer pointing at 1F something that El Pasoans are definitely not used to. Although the city almost came to a complete stop and school districts were forced to cancel classes for 4 days, the tennis activity in all clubs was sidelined for a couple of days only. It was during these days that I had the chance to catch up with Alberto Goenaga in a junior tournament in Las Cruces. Alberto is a USPTA 1 professional with over 30 years of teaching experience. He played competitive college tennis for New Mexico Military Institute and then transferred to Texas A&M where he obtained a degree in Parks and Recreation in After playing against the highest ranked players in the NCAA, Alberto headed to El Paso where he briefly joined Tennis West before getting his first assignment as the Tennis Director at Roswell Country Club. It is the city of Roswell where Alberto has done pretty much everything! He has directed all operations at the country club, has been a tennis high school coach, then returned to NMMI to become the tennis coach for five years and among other things he has been a tennis consultant for the City of Roswell for the growth of our sport. It was great to catch up with Alberto! Lastly, I have some good news I would like to share with you. I have been asked to be the Fitness Coach for Mexico s Davis Cup Team in the series against Canada. The meet will take place in Toluca, Mexico March 4-6, page 7

Northern Arizona Northern New Mexico by Larry Lineberry by Corey Matney page 8 Prescott USPTA member Jon Przybyl, manager of the Prescott Racquet Club in Prescott has been appointed to the Northern Arizona Tennis Association board of directors. He will help represent the Prescott area in USTA matters of Northern Arizona. Jon is also the tournament director of six USTA sanctioned events in 2011, three adult and three junior events. Look for Jon and his wife Cherie to make some big contributions to Prescott tennis in Flagstaff USPTA Pro Nicole Williams and her husband had a baby boy in October. Originally from South Africa, Nicole is celebrating her 20th year in the tennis industry in the USA. She is the director of tennis at the Flagstaff Junior Tennis Academy where she is producing some new Flagstaff junior competitors and has now been at the Flagstaff Athletic Club for over five years. Sedona Master Professional and Sedona Racquet Club director of tennis, Larry Lineberry, has secured a major five figure grant from the Verde Valley Medical Center in Cottonwood to begin a comprehensive USTA QuickStart program in key locations across the Verde Valley and Flagstaff. The program, beginning in April, will especially serve the diverse population of the area by keeping registration costs, equipment and professional fees very affordable for those where price is a factor. The grant will afford appropriate professional fees, training costs and equipment purchase without placing those burdens on the players. Additional programming for the 11 and older players moving on will also be created and financed with this grant. Lineberry is also organizing a music concert in Sedona by internationally known singer/songwriter, Bruce Hornsby, which will raise funds, in part, for junior tennis development in Northern Arizona. tennis. Hopefully all of us here in Northern New Mexico have been enjoying the warmer than usual winter days! This is my favorite time of year, because every day you can see the weather getting a little better and you know spring is just a short time away, and with spring comes the real beginning of another year of Over the past few months, I have had the opportunity to attend several different USPTA and USTA conferences and have come away with a wealth of new knowledge. The most enjoyable and educational was the 2011 Southwest USPTA conference in Carefree, AZ. The event was a vast improvement from past years and I encourage everyone to make the trip to Arizona for next year s. Special thanks to everyone from Northern New Mexico who attended this year. We had a great showing at the conference and I hope it continues. As I write, I know we re all busy getting ready for the beginning of some aspect of the tennis world. Whether it s the high school season just underway, the upcoming USTA league season, middle school tennis, or tournaments to be organized, we re coming out of hibernation. Our USPTA pros will be running tournaments, mixers, and 10-andunder training over the next few months. During March and April, Robert Soneru at Highpoint, Warren Fulgenzi, Rockey Royer and myself at Shellaberger, David Pitts at Tanoan, and David Ochotorena at TCA will host adult and junior tournaments on different weekends. The tournament calendar will also be filled over the next few months with Dick Johnson s rookie series junior events. Also in March, a 10-and-under training program at Shellaberger will be conducted by fellow USPTA pro D Wayne Begay. In May, the highlight of our tournament season arrives, when David Pitts hosts the New Mexico Open at Tanoan. On another note, congratulations to Jimmy Parker of Santa Fe for winning the 2010 USPTA Southwest Men s Senior Player of the Year award. Jimmy received the award at the continued on page 9

Southwest USPTA conference in January. He continues to turn in great results at national and international events and will most likely win many more of these awards. Great job, Jimmy. As I leave you, I hope you re all ready for the wonderful storm of tennis that is approaching and that it is an enjoyable year for all. I challenge each of you to make 2011 the best year in tennis that Northern New Mexico has seen. Good luck, and enjoy. National News USPTA and the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation team up in the fight against obesity The United States Professional Tennis Association and Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation commit to working together in 2011 to reduce childhood obesity. The USPTA s Tennis for the health of it! initiative, which started in 2008, promotes the great health benefits of playing tennis, and fits well with the goals of the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation to provide resources to encourage energy balance and reduce obesity, especially childhood obesity. The sport of tennis and its tremendous health benefits (both physical and psychological) make it a key activity to help youth (and all age groups) achieve energy balance. While the gym and fitness classes are great for the gym enthusiasts, for those who prefer an outdoor activity/sport instead, tennis can serve that purpose as fun, easy exercise. There is no doubt that tennis is one of the best activities when it comes to burning calories, enhancing brain development and improving one s mental and physical health, and there is strong scientific evidence/studies behind it, said Jack Groppel, USPTA Master Professional and vice president, and co-founder of Human Performance Institute. We feel that by keeping Tennis for the health of it! and tennis front and center, we can really help promote energy balance and make a difference in the battle against obesity in general and specifically childhood obesity. The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, a CEO-led organization, is a national, multi-year effort designed to help reduce obesity especially childhood obesity by It s a first-of-its kind coalition that brings together more than 130 retailers, food and beverage manufacturers, restaurants, sporting goods and insurance companies, trade associations and NGOs, and professional sports organizations. The Foundation promotes ways to help people achieve a healthy weight through energy balance calories in and calories out. It focuses on three critical areas the marketplace, the workplace and schools. For more information, visit The main goals of USPTA s Tennis for the health of it! initiative are to make the general public aware of the tremendous health, fitness and psychological benefits of tennis and encourage people to get out and play the sport as a part of their regular fitness regimen. An activity such as tennis that is also social and fun can serve as a great alternative to gym workouts or as an additional activity in a fitness regimen. In addition, the USPTA and its members are the delivery force through which the public can receive these benefits through lessons and other tennis activities. For more information visit Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation also joins an artillery of heavy hitters already on board and committed to supporting USPTA in its efforts to promote Tennis for the health of it! through Tennis Across America, which is the original grassroots lessons program in its 22nd year. The program is celebrated in May, which is also National Physical Fitness Month. page 9

USPTA announces new member credential New Accredited Professional Coach classification includes mandatory continuing education The United States Professional Tennis Association has announced the launch of its Accredited Professional Coach classification, a new membership classification that includes mandatory education. The new classification became effective January 1, It is open to Professional 1, 2 and 3 members and Master Professionals. USPTA Professional members are required to take continuing education in order to earn and maintain APC status. The benefits of APC designation include opportunities for career enhancement through a commitment to tennis and tennis education and demonstration of expertise, and building the image of tennis-teaching professionals and tennis as a profession overall. The APC is earned by accumulating 20 APC continuing education credits within a two-year period. The designation is maintained by continuing to earn 20 APC credits over every two-year period. APC credits can be earned in a variety of ways including attending the USPTA World Conference, USPTA division conventions, USPTA specialty courses, USTA High Performance education, viewing DVD seminars, and more. Two hours of qualifying education will constitute one CEU. The opportunity to earn credits at USPTA World Conferences and division conventions will require members to fill out a form for credit at the beginning of the seminar or specialty course (that is collected at the end of the seminar), in order to verify attendance for credit. For more details regarding qualifying credits, education@uspta.org. Once members achieve this distinction, they will be issued a special certificate with an expiration date and the designation will be added after their professional rating. The certificate will be available online to print from the member management area of where members can log in with name and member number. page 10 While the APC classification did not become effective until January of this year, those members who attended specialty courses at the World Conference in September and completed the forms for credit will have those credits count toward the APC classification. To apply for this new membership classification, in addition to being certified at the USPTA professional level, members must also take the Professional Tennis Coaches Academy I and pass a competency exam at the 80th percentile or higher. Those who have already taken the PTCA I and scored 80 percent or higher do not need to retake it. USPTA Professionals raise more than $5 million for charity In 2010, United States Professional Tennis Association teaching professionals raised more than $5 million for charity through the association s Lessons for Life program. Wow, look what we have raised over the last 12 years! Our members continually raise money, year after year, helping out our communities, said Diane Selke, Lessons for Life chair, USPTA Master Professional and head tennis professional at Valley Country Club in Aurora, Colo. That is what it s all about: helping one another through the best sport of all tennis the sport of a lifetime! Lessons for Life became USPTA s national charitable program in 1999 and since then the USPTA and its members have raised more than $45 million in an effort to support various charities. Through this program, the USPTA encourages its members to use tennis as a vehicle to help others through fundraisers and other activities in their communities. The fundraisers take many forms including tournaments, pro-ams, auctions, black-tie dinners and clinics. Many of the fundraisers take place at country clubs and commercial clubs, where the majority of USPTA Professionals direct tennis operations and programming. In 2009 an additional element was added to the program when the USPTA and Rally for the Cure joined forces to

raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer through tennis and Lessons for Life under the broader Tennis for the health of it! initiative. Rally for the Cure has the tools and materials for USPTA tennis-teaching professionals interested in running a Lessons for Life charity tennis event in support of Rally for the Cure. This is just one more way USPTA teaching professionals can give to important causes through tennis and Lessons for Life. Lessons for Life is officially celebrated in October, but USPTA members may direct and participate in fundraisers year-round. Any fundraising that you do for recognized charities giving free lessons or clinics, organizing tournaments and play in pro-ams, conducting auctions, and hosting black-tie dinners can be counted in Lessons for Life numbers. Reporting is easy if you send an to your division liaison or to lessonsforlife@uspta.org or send an electronic report via the Lessons for Life section of Lessons for Life Reminder If you host a Lessons for Life or charity event in 2011 please e- mail Gerald Winder, Southwest chairman with the details of your event and the amount of money you raised so our division gets credit. You can reach Gerald at usptapro@msn.com Courtside USA is the official network of the USPTA Courtside provides online tools for all USPTA teaching professionals Courtside USA and the United States Professional Tennis Association have joined forces to give USPTA tennisteaching professionals state-of-the-art tools to run their tennis programs online. Courtside USA provides tennis teachers and clubs access to a free website to build their business and connect with their members/players from one central location. The site gives teaching professionals the technology they need to run leagues, ladders, tournaments, flex leagues and round robins. In addition, they can manage lesson bookings, court bookings and events, all from the convenience of their computer. Courtside USA also provides players with a free web page with interactive social networking capabilities, where they have the opportunity to organize their matches and connect with other players. They can also register for leagues, events and programs at their local club or in the community from their web page. In this day when online networking and social networking sites are all the rage and businesses are turning to them to build their brands and connect with consumers, it makes perfect sense for USPTA to partner with Courtside and Tenniscores, the second largest tennis league management software in the U.S. with more than 300,000 users annually, said Tim Heckler, USPTA CEO. The question becomes: Can tennis-teaching professionals afford not to be on Courtside USA if they want to grow their business successfully and communicate effectively with their members? By partnering with the USPTA we are able to deliver our software directly into the hands of the teaching professionals and tennis organizers in each community, where it belongs, said Nancy Biggs, president of Get Courtside Inc. By providing the men and women who run tennis from the ground up with ability to manage a successful business online, we guarantee not only their future but the growth and development of the game. 14 Aggressive Margin for you! page 14 by Gerald Winder - Education Chairman Aggressive margin has been deemed the most important stat in our sport. Have you ever heard of it? Not sure it is important? Maybe ask former Stanford Head Coach Dick Gould what he may think, since it played such a role in aiding his great players over the years of his tenure. To my knowledge, he had a couple of managers whose job was to chart, among other stats, the aggressive margin of his players during the pre-season practice matches and early season matches. Then they would graph the aggressive margins of each of his players, knowing that if their scores went progressively up, then they were playing better and better levels of tennis, even if they lost any of those matches! Thus, by the time their real matches began, they were, hopefully, at peak playing levels while most opponents were still trying to find themselves. In Martina Navratilova s final Wimbledon singles title, she not only had her matches charted for these stats, but also all of the opponents that she drew, so that she knew what she was doing well, and what her opponent s strengths/weaknesses were, along with their aggressive margin scores. So, if this particular stat happens to be so important, why do you not see it on TV when the stats are given? Well, when IBM first got the ok to have the original COMPUTENNIS program for themselves, they actually included the stat in their first presentations during televised matches for about six months. That was it! I don t really know why it was dropped as I have always felt if the playing public and professionals like ourselves understood it fully, the playing public would benefit more in understanding how to play our sport. Well, all that is nice history, but what exactly is this major stat in our sport, and what does it actually tell you and where did I get it in the first place? Early in my career, I decided to get as many certifications in as many areas of tennis as I could, one of them being COMPUTENNIS itself. Back then, I was hired to chart quite a few matches of tournament level juniors, some college matches, some of my juniors, and did a few televised matches just to understand the sport from a different direction, in a way that professionals who haven t done this couldn t do very easily, if at all. Now, the stat itself is derived by adding winners plus forced errors, and subtracting unforced errors. Let s say you play ten matches and chart all of them, including of course, the aggressive margin figure. As long as you have a progressively higher AM score, then your level of tennis is getting progressively better, even if you are losing those matches. Conversely, if you are winning those matches, but getting a progressively lower score, your game is going downhill! As an example, a truly special level match, such as the Laver-Rosewall of years ago, or the Federer-Nadal Wimbledon final of a couple of years ago, would register a score probably in the low 20 s for both players. AD-1 college match with quality players might be in the upper teens as a score, and downward as levels become lower in our sport. Actually, you can register a negative AM. I know this first hand as, unfortunately, I had one once, honest, just once! Not a great feeling, for sure. Also, it is not possible to lose a match if your AM score was higher than your opponent. Of course, all the rest of match stats, such as serving percentages, points won, forehand errors, backhand errors, etc., certainly have their place, but this article was focusing on the most important one that most teaching pros, perhaps, were not even aware of. For your information, during the Aussie Open, IBM had produced a superb graphic of stats on both players. It would be fairly customizable for someone reading this to enhance their knowledge on this subject, since most of us are visual learners. Hopefully, IBM will continue this effort during possibly Indian Wells or the French Open. There are several charting programs available now that include using IPhone and several standalone versions that you can use to develop this knowledge. I do not know if any spcifically include the AM per se, but of course you could determine it for yourself. But, it was sweet in the original program to have it printed out for both players right before your eyes. I hope all this info has intrigued you to delving into these types of programs, as I feel it will broaden your understanding of our sport, as it did for myself over the years. For those reading this far, if you wish to know the percentage of second serve points won in a match to give yourself a chance to win, me and you will get it quickly! Any comments, plus or minus, may be sent to usptapro@msn.com. Have a great Spring!
