Much of this growth has been in the last four years ( ) in which: Racquet sales increased 37% Ball sales increased 14% Youth racquets increased 49% USTA membership growth from in Mecklenburg County is significantly outpacing nationwide growth in USTA memberships over the same period. 8 Why Tennis for Health? One of the healthiest sports to play. Few sports have the range of benefits and lifelong enjoyment as tennis. Participation is multi-cultural, multigenerational and involves people from all walks of life. Cleveland Clinic, the nation s top-rated heart care facility, has called tennis an ideal sport for a healthy heart. Combines the fat burning benefits of aerobic exercise with the and strength-building benefits of interval exercise. Tennis fights obesity. North Carolina has the 15 th highest level of adult obesity and the 11 th highest overweight high school student level. The state spent an estimated $254 per person in 2003 on medical costs related to obesity. MCPR is encouraging men, women and children to participate in programs focused on fitness and wellness. Head: Tennis sharpens the mind as it sharpens the body. Arms: Swinging a racquet tones biceps, triceps, shoulders and forearms muscles and leaves a person strong and more sculpted. Flexibility: Tennis forces one to stretch dozens of muscles all over the body. Total Body Workout Heart: Interval training is a great way to improve heart function. When playing tennis, the heart works at a higher level as it runs around the court, then recovers during the second interval between points. Abdominals: The body s core, does the hard work when you hit a tennis ball. Legs: Calves, hamstrings and quadriceps get a full workout from playing tennis. CTA Overview & Mission 8

9 Why Tennis for Youth Development? Ideal Sport for Education / Youth Development. Tennis and educational after-school programs support the core mission of schools by: Increasing attachment to school. Improving attendance. Improving academic performance. In addition to physical benefits, tennis: Builds discipline, confidence and independent thinking. Teaches responsibility, respect and a strong work ethic. Requires alertness and tactical thinking. Improves hand-eye coordination and agility. Provides a beneficial activity for at-risk youth and a positive sense of community. Provides structured after-school activity. Academic Support Character Development/Life Skills The Whole Child Physical Development CTA Overview & Mission 9

10 Why Tennis for the Community? Stimulates the local economy. Boosts commerce and culture. Rebuilds communities. Brings communities together. Creates jobs. Attracts state/regional/national tournaments that impact city hotels/food/retail establishments. Increases national exposure of city as a tourist destination. Other communities have experienced significant revenue inflow from hosting tournaments that bring in out-of-town guests. Many of the regional tournaments can bring in as much as $500,000 or more for a single tournament. See economic impact of Southern section major events (pg. 25). Many communities with flagship facilities often host tournaments a year. CTA Overview & Mission 10

18 Public Tennis Programming Today Individual contractors typically conduct programming at some of the larger Mecklenburg County facilities. Unlike some other communities, Charlotte does not currently have a Tennis Director coordinating the tennis programming for the county. Such a de-centralized approach has resulted in a dysfunctional infrastructure. Differing programs at various sites with no centralized oversight. More limited programming at most sites and, in some cases, no programming offered. Limited cross-pollination of programming ideas and events. Various community organizations and individuals coordinate and conduct league play on MCPR courts: CTA coordinates and runs all USTA leagues. Other leagues are run by groups such as Matchmaker and Queen City. State of Mecklenburg County Tennis 18

Previous effort reached 800 kids in only 3 years. Provides accountability for achieving goals across multiple locations. Coordinates activities with after-school programs and recreation centers. Improves our ability to work through NRPA to improve USTA funding. USTA is recognized as a partner with NRPA. Serves as a spokesperson for our community in attracting events and tournaments.
