3 Jonathan wong Senior Captain Melville, N.Y. Saddlebrook Prep Coach Goswami on Wong: Jonathan has been one of the best players in the Ivy League for the last three years. He has tremendous ball-striking ability. Fall 2009: Won the A singles title at the 2009 USTA Collegiate Challenge beat players from Boston College, Cornell and Princeton on the way to the championship match beat Penn s top player, Eugen Brazdil in the final, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) won two consolation matches at the UVA Invitational, including a 6-4, 7-5 win over then-ranked No. 124 Steven Forman of Wake Forest with partner Haig Schneiderman, won the A doubles draw at the 2009 Columbia Classic. Spring 2009: Earned second-team All-Ivy League honors in singles went 12-7 in singles overall, and 14-5 in doubles with partner Haig Schneiderman, including a 5-2 Ivy League record ranked 2nd in the Northeast Region by the ITA at the start of the season won his first match of the season in straight sets in the ECAC Semifinals at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1 won at No. 1 singles in two sets, both by tiebreaker, against Harvard in the ECAC Finals won in straight sets at the top singles and doubles spots against St. Johns won in straight sets at No. 1 singles against Stony Brook, 6-0, 6-2 had singles wins over Dartmouth, Yale and Princeton during the Ivy League season on the way to securing a team Ivy League Championship. Spring 2008: First Team All-Ivy League selection... only sophomore to be named to first team... tallied 10 wins in singles competition, including four against Ivy League competitors... had 3-3 mark at top singles spot, with wins over Yale, Harvard and Cornell... victory over Crimson s Chris Clayton in straight sets when Clayton was ranked No. 108 in the nation... had 11 wins in doubles, including 7-0 mark in Ivy League... named second team All-Ivy League in doubles with teammate Bogdan Borta. Fall 2007: Played No. 2 doubles with Mark Clemente and No. 3 singles... picked up wins in the Columbia Classic and the ECAC Championships. Spring 2007: Named Ivy League Rookie of the Year after going undefeated at No. 4 singles in League action (8-0 including the NCAA berth playoff vs. Penn)... second team All-Ivy League... went 11-7 in doubles, primarily at No. 3 with Mark Clemente... went 16-4 overall. Fall 2006: Compiled a 7-2 record... played at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles. 6 mihai nichifor Senior Captain Constanta, Romania Manhattan College captains Coach Goswami on Nichifor: Mihai has been a solid performer ever since he joined Columbia. Powerful serves and good ground strokes make him a top Ivy League player. Fall 2009: Qualified for the main draw of the ITA All-American championships in Tulsa upset then-no.17 San Diego s Dean Jackson 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, in the consolation bracket with doubles partner Kevin Kung, beat Francois Van Impe and David Bendeheim of Nebraska, 8-2 at the UVA Invitational also won his first round singles match in the A-1 bracket, beating Wake Forest s David Hopkins, 5-7, 7-6, 7-6 beat Penn State s Jason Lee in the first round of the Princeton/Farnsworth Invitational won four matches at the ITA Regionals to advance to the quarterfinals, including wins over players from Binghamton, Harvard and Yale. Spring 2009: Earned second-team All-Ivy honors in singles, and first-team All-Ivy League honors in doubles, with partner Bogdan Borta went 16-2 in singles, including a perfect 7-0 in Ivy League matches went 5-2 in conference doubles matches with Borta ranked seventh in the Northeast Region by the ITA at the start of the season won in straight sets at No. 3 singles against Boston College in the ECAC Quarterfinals won at No. 3 singles in the ECAC Semifinals against Brown, 7-5, 6-1 won in three sets at No. 3 singles against Harvard in the ECAC Finals helped Lions clinch at least a share of the title with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Penn s Adam Schwartz earned the first singles point in Columbia s sweep of Princeton to secure Ivy League championship title. At Manhattan College: Competed for two years at Manhattan College, earning second team All-MAAC honors each season... played No. 2 slot behind teammate Bogdan Borta as a freshman, then moved up to No. 1 the following year... also named to MAAC All-Academic Team. In Romania: Was a three-time National Champion of Romania... won a bronze medal in the European Championships in doubles play... won a gold medal in the Eastern European Championships in both singles and doubles... earned a bronze medal at the Orange Bowl Doubles in the World Junior Championships. 7 upperclassmen kevin kung Junior Hong Kong Hong Kong International School Coach Goswami on Kung: Kevin has tremendous work ethic. He had a lot of nagging injuries last year. He should rebound and help us in both singles and doubles. Fall 2009: With doubles partner Mihai Nichifor, beat Francois Van Impe and David Bendeheim of Nebraska 8-2 at the UVA Invitational. Spring 2009: Recognized as an ITA Scholar-Athlete Went 5-3 in singles in 2009, playing a majority of his matches in the No. 6 spot closed out the Lions 7-0 victory over Army with a come-from-behind win at No. 6 singles won at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-4, against Boston College in the ECAC Quarterfinals defeated St. John s Stefan Nikolic at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 6-2 won at No. 3 singles against Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-4, 6-2, and at No. 6 singles against Binghamton, 7-6, 7-6. Spring 2008: Competed in B Singles at the Columbia Classic, where he defeated Manhattan s Philip Szymik, 6-2, 6-2 in his first match... defeated Radford s Paul Boslet, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5 singles... defeated Manhattan s top doubles combo, 8-0, with teammate Jared Drucker... beat Fairleigh Dickinson s No. 3 doubles combo, 9-7 with Drucker, and beat the No. 5 single s opponent, 6-2, won, 6-0, 6-2 against Manhattan s Filip Szymik at No. 3 singles... at No. 5 singles, defeated Army s Girdley, 6-2, defeated TCU s Zach Nichols and Jack Seider, 8-5 on the first stop of the Lions spring break trip... also won at No. 6 singles, defeating Casey Powers, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7)... at Texas-Arlington, defeated Nashant Hari, 6-3, 6-4 at sixth singles... on the last stop of the Lions Texas tour, was the only player to record a win against Southern Methodist s Taylor St. Eve, 6-4, with teammate Mark Clemente defeated Princeton s Faust-Gober pair, 8-5, at first doubles : Did not compete. Alex lee Junior Tenafly, N.J. Tenafly : Did not compete as a first-year. Coach Goswami on Lee: Alex is a great team player. Everybody loves to practice with Alex because he absolutely never misses. Once he adds a little more power to his serve and ground-strokes, he will compete for a spot in our lineup. At Tenafly: Played four years of tennis, earning four letters. Personal: Parents are Melissa and Jay 81CC... general studies student. At Hong Kong International: Ranked #1 player in Hong Kong in 12s, 14s, 16, 18s... won three ITF circuit doubles title... winner of Hong Kong Junior Nationals. 8 upperclassmen sho matsumoto Junior Cos Cob, Conn. Greenwich Coach Goswami on Matsumoto: Sho has played some great matches. If he can do this consistently, he will help the team in singles. Spring 2009: Went 2-3 in singles in the No. 6 position won in two straight sets against Old Dominion, 6-4, 6-1. Fall 2008: Won first-round match in singles at Columbia Classic before falling in quarters... also competed in singles at Princeton Invite. Spring 2008: Competed in B Singles at the Columbia Classic, defeating Manhattan s No. 3 doubles pair, 8-1 with teammate Ruo Li... recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win against Manhattan at No. 4 singles... defeated Army s Chris Albomoz, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 singles... beat Princeton s Ilya Trubox, 6-2, 6-2 at sixth singles... defeated Penn s Dmitry Bury, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 at sixth singles. At Greenwich: Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference as a freshman and sophomore... All FCIAC as a junior... won the Connecticut State Championship as a freshman... state finalist as a sophomore and junior... went undefeated as a freshman. Personal: Parents are Naomi and Toyokazu... economics major... brother plays at Keio University in Japan (class of 2011). Rajeev deb-sen Sophomore New York, N.Y. Horace Mann Coach Goswami on Deb-Sen: Rajeev has a great work ethic, is hardworking and fast. He made great strides last year, and keeps improving. He will help us win many matches. Fall 2009: Beat Penn State s C.J. Griffin in the first round of the C singles bracket at the Princeton/Farnsworth Invitational won a first round match at the ITA Regionals, over Krik Kreutzer of Boston College. Spring 2009: Went 9-2 overall in singles, playing mostly in the No. 6 spot, including a 5-2 conference record was 11-4 in doubles overall, with partners Dan Urban and Bogdan Borta helped the Lions earn at least a share of the Ivy League title with his match-clinching singles win against Penn beat Ivy opponents from Princeton, Penn, Dartmouth, Harvard and Brown. Fall 2008: Recorded two wins in the B singles draw of the Princeton Invitational, including a tight match against Yale s Jordan Abergel, 7-6 (3), 6-4, and a win over Princeton s Ravi Yegya-Raman, 6-3, 6-0. Horace Mann Spring 2009: Went 10-7 in singles, spending most Coach Goswami on Schneiderman: Haig has been a terrific addition. He had a dream spring season, and he s worked hard. He s slowly becoming one of the best in the Ivy League. Fall 2009: Had wins over players from William & Mary and NC State at the UVA Invitational advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Regionals, including an upset win over No. 2 seed Eugen Brazdil of Penn, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 also beat players from Cornell, Yale and Marist before being eliminated. Spring 2009: Unanimous selection for Ivy League Rookie of the Year went 13-6 in singles, playing mostly in the No. 3 spot went a nearperfect 6-1 in conference singles matches went 14-5 in No. 2 doubles with partner Jonathan Wong, including a 5-2 Ivy League record had singles wins over Princeton, Penn, Harvard, Dartmouth, Yale and Cornell beat SMU s Adham el-effendi 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, for Columbia s lone point. Fall 2008: In his collegiate debut, recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win over Nebraska s Renato Melo in the single s B flight of the Virginia Invitational... also reached the consolation finals of the doubles flight A... paired with teammate Mihai Nichifor at the National Tennis Center Invitational, defeated Yale s Lederman-Bennett duo, recorded two wins in the B singles draw of the Princeton Invitational, defeating St. John s Jordan Talbot, 6-0, 6-1, and Yale s Ryan Berman, 6-2, 6-2. of his time in the No. 4 spot went 5-2 in doubles won at No. 4 singles against Old Dominion s Alex Funkhouser picked up his first point in a dual match with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 4 against Army won at No. 4 singles against Brown in the ECAC Semifinals, 7-5, 6-4 defeated Stony Brook s Youssef Fassi-Fehri in two sets at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-5. Fall 2008: Defeated Cornell s Jeremy Feldman, 6-3, 6-2, last season s Ivy League Rookie of the Year, to mark his first collegiate win at the National Tennis Center Invitational... won doubles match with Rajeev Deb-Sen against Harvard s Guzick and Hietaniemi... won two singles matches to reach semifinals of Columbia Classic... also won twice at ITA Regionals, first topping Harvard s Davis Mangham, 6-0, 6-4, then defeating Cornell s Jon Fife, 6-4, 7-6 in second round. At Koc School: Won an ITF (International Tennis Federation) junior At Horace Mann: Number #1 junior in the Boys 18 division in the East and also ranked top 50 in the nation... named a High School All-American... three-time Mayor s Cup Champion at Horace Mann. tournament beating players ranked in the in the world juniors... 10 first-years Cyril bucher First-year Lucerne, Switzerland Kantonsschule Alpenquai Coach Goswami on Bucher: Cyril has great ball strikes. He needs to add defense to his aggressive play. He works hard, and will become a great Ivy League player. Fall 2009: Had a good showing in the D singles bracket at the Princeton/ Farnsworth Invitational, beating Cornell s Charles Quay in the first round, before advancing to upset the No.1 seed, Princeton s Coleman Crutchfield advanced to the B bracket finals of the 2009 Columbia Classic, where he fell to the No.1 seed, Matt Siow of Princeton, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(4). At Kantonsschule Alpenquai: Played for the Lido Lucerne tennis club in Switzerland was the Swiss champion in 2003 ranked as high as No. 61 in Switzerland in the N3 division helped lead Lido Lucerne to multiple championships on various levels. nathaniel gery First-year Aurora, Ontario Aurora Coach Goswami on Gery: Nate is a great talent. He has a very good serve and volley, and will help us in both singles and doubles. Fall 2009: Beat Binghamton s Rafael Rodrigues in the first round of the Princeton/Farnsworth Invitationa, 6-1, 6-3. At Aurora: Was a Canadian national junior champion in both U14 and U18 divisions. Personal: Born 8/17/90 son of Michaela and Marcel Gery... father, Michael, competed for Canada in the 1972 Olympics in swimming. Personal: Born 9/18/89 son of Sandra and Erwin Bucher plans to major in chemistry. john yetimoglu First-year Miami, Fla. Miami Palmetto Senior Coach Goswami on Yetimoglu: John is hard working, and improving every day. He will compete for a spot in the starting lineup. Fall 2009: Won the F flight at the 2009 USTA Collegiate Challenge beat Penn s Jeffery Karsh in the finals, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, after beating players from Sacred Heart, Fairleigh Dickinson and Cornell. At Miami Palmetto: Earned four varsity letters in tennis won a state championship at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles his senior year was a top 30 ranked player for USTA Boys 18s in his first year helped lead high school team to a second place finish at states his senior year, following a third place finish his junior season.
